2019 Salary Cap Rise = Jameis Pay Increase

December 12th, 2018

The NFL is bursting with revenue and so is Team Glazer.

Wait a minute, all those political experts insisted the NFL would take a big-money hit because of pregame protests. Alas, America adores its football played by grown men, so league income is way up and, subsequently, so is next year’s salary cap.

Per ProFootballTalk.com:

“The NFL informed clubs [Tuesday] that the projections for the 2019 salary cap are in the range of $187.0 million to $191.1 million,” the league said in a statement.

That represents about a $13 million jump from 2018. In other words, NFL teams will have another $400 million to work with next year.

Conveniently, America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, is scheduled to earn $20.9 million next season, all of which will count against the salary cap. That’s $13 million more than he counts against this year’s cap, a raise nearly identical to the cap increase.

The Bucs have plenty of key salary decisions to make next season, including Kwon Alexander and Donovan Smith, but they’ll have the salary cap increase to work with and several big salaries they can dump without major consequences.

Jamies is a $20.9 million dollar quarterback, pay the man!

  2. AlteredEgo Says:

Tricky business…as a rising tide tends to raise all boats…I’d like #93 back with a huge cap friendly restructure if that is possible…Donovan , I’d be afraid to give him anymore money with a new contract …

  3. ben Says:

trade Winston for an accurate qb

  4. Joe Blahak Says:

Yeah, dump WinSTUNNED, Marshmallow McCoy and Alligator Arms DJax. Lots of cash!

  5. miken Says:

Over the last 10 years, the cap has not been an issue. We have always had lots of $ and no one to spend on. Might as well give the 21 mil and see what he does next year. Its unfortunate we couldn’t be good when our qb was cheap. I’d draft a qb too thou.

  6. El Buco Realisto Says:

Don’t think of the money per touchdown breakdown (at this point would be over 1 million per touchdown!!!!), use the breakdown of money per inaccurate throw, and it will seem like a bargin ($100 thousand per inaccurate throw)!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. nate s Says:

time to abonden ship ive seen enough..

  8. Bucsfanman Says:

$20.9 puts him in the middle of the pack of QB salaries right where it belongs.
Definitely a lot of decisions to be made, but some seem to be common sense.

  9. Dewey Selmon Says:

I’d pay 20mil to see Jameis in a new offense. If still not sure franchise him in 2020 before a long term commitment.

  10. BrianBucs Says:

Hopefully if Winston gets a pay raise, it will be given to him by his new team where he will be a backup

  11. Hodad Says:

Just don’t let Licht be making the decision to extend, Kwon, or Smith. He’s the one who drafted them, and of course will over pay both to prove they were good draft choices. We don’t even know when Kwon will be ready, or what he’s lost when he comes back. We need a MLB like Seattle has a real beast. Dallas’s rookie is playing better then Kwon has ever played, we can do better. Smith isn’t a top LT, and we can’t afford to spend more money on under performers. We need to draft two real tackles who’ve proved they can do it like the kid from Ol Miss. We don’t need another Cappa, that’s what Licht would give us.

  12. StoutGospel Says:

I gotta say…@Hodad is making a ton of sense there ^^^^^^ Well done Hodad, making especially good sense on what kind of Kwon will we have when he comes back, Kappa (thus far), and that Licht would most especially overpay his own draft picks to prove their selections were sound.

GO GET JOHN HARBAUGH! Let him cultivate his own front office executive/GM.

And BTW…Jameis is gonna have to get paid, and we’ll need to hand him a fairly large check to pull down the cap hit, like all QB’s get. Come to terms with it folks.

    Bucs resurgence!!

  13. MHBuc25 Says:

    LOL.

  14. zzbuc Says:

Donovan Smith???? I guess you are joking Joe right? Paying an OL that can´t block, is like paying a QB that can´t throw!!!!!

  15. 813bucboi Says:

the new GM & KRIS RICHARD will know what to do with the cap space….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  16. quickdrw21 Says:

    BrianBucs said it best!!!

  17. pelbuc Says:

Please trade JW, Donovan Smith, GMC and Hargraves on draft day. Get at least 3 Olinemen, 2 dbs and dump Benenoch. Get a QB in 1st or 2nd round.

  18. TOM Says:

I agree with getting rid of D smith, Bennoch & Dotson & drafting two OL high in the draft, as long as Licht isn’t in the draft room or better yet not part of the Bucs at all. There are several high end tackles in the draft.

  19. ateonetree Says:

pay Winston get rid of brate and Jackson and pay leveon bell!!!!

  20. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

    Hire a new GM

  21. Mort Says:

That’s peanuts compared to other starting QBs that are worse than him. Pay the man. Matter of fact, sign him to an extension. Go Bucs.

  22. El Buco Realisto Says:

The only thing worse than Looking for a franchise QB, is thinking that you have one when you do not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. Sumo Says:

The Bucs are stuck with Jameis. He’s too good to get rid of but not good enough to be great. We are stuck. We gotta sign him and hope he gets better. Good luck!

  24. westernbuc Says:

No rational person can try to extend Jameis while at the same time argue we need to clean house.

  25. Duke Silver Says:

20 mil is 20 million reason to let JW go and fix other glaring issues. We can find another qb better than JW.

  26. The Coroner Says:

Donovan Smith is clearly a liability at left tackle. Who knows at right tackle or right guard.
He is worth the average mediocre left tackle salary. Joe, what would that be?
    thanks

  27. tickrdr Says:

A story today notes that of the top 6 highest paid qbs, only Kirk Cousins is currently on track to make the playoffs. The teams with the best records have a young qb on a “rookie” contract.
Agree with pelbuc that hopefully the Bucs draft a new qb
    in the 1st round.

  28. Rod Munch Says:

Winston, since his return, 3 games and 1 quarter of football, has nearly 1000 yards passing, 8 TDs and 2 INTs, both of those INT’s being hail marys.

So he’s not turning the ball over, not forcing the ball into coverage, not making plays, he’s being the boring game manager QB, he’s being Mike Glennon, which is exactly what the Winston haters say they wanted.

    Yet they still complain?

It’s almost like the Winston haters are fake news frauds who will literally complain about everything, and it’s why I give them exactly ZERO respect. They’re liars and they’re dishonest.

  29. gp Says:

I am soooooooooooo glad that none of you make the decisions for this team!

  30. BucsBandit Says:

Rod Munch – DUDE… get some original material! You keep using “fake news” in a completely unrelated context.

There’s no fake news or false facts in the reality that Jameis Winston is not a consistent, WINNING QB.

So he’s had a few games without as many turnovers as usual… boy, that’s refreshing. LOL. His consistent body of work proves that he is a HIGH TURNOVER QB.

Your unabashed love for Winston, no matter how bad he plays or his 4th year of lack of wins, is ABSURD.

I would bet anything you sleep with a Winston doll.

  31. Oneilbucs Says:

Man I hate the pictures they show of Jamies on this site. I don’t know why or what it means or what the hold point is but it’s starting to make me wonder why Keotter don’t have pictures or any other white players? It just makes me wonder why that’s all .

  32. Jim Says:

Well, no one here gets to decide, that’s up to the Glazer boys. And when they make their offer, we’ll finally see how they really feel about Winston.

  33. Jim Says:

    What Sumo said…

  34. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Realisto’s opinion will always and forever be declared irrelevant until he admits that he is 120% wrong about the bum that is Mike Smith.

Ima just put it like this. You rightfully lambasted the ever-living daylights out of Lovie for being the garbage coach that he was. Yet defend Mike Smith, WHEN HIS DEFENSES WERE WORSE THAN LOVIES!

Nothing you say has any weight to it until this massive discrepancy is addressed dude. Jameis has been much, much better at his job in his tenure with the Bucs than Mike Smith ever did outside of one fluke stretch in 2016 when we were playing against teams that were ravaged by injury.

  35. Vinny Says:

If they being back Donovan smith anything more than 7-8 million a year with nothing guaranteed after one or two years I’d be pissed. No more season tickets. I’d rather see Webster and Liedke at tackles than these bums we have. And get benenoch the hell outta here.. SMH

  36. passthebuc Says:

Great. Why don’t they throw money at Smith and Bennoch as long as they are flushing it down the toilet?

  37. Alanbucsfan Says:

Humphries, DJax and Grimes will be gone next year,
    possibly McCoy as well,

Giants would jump on opportunity to sign Jameis…

  38. MC Says:

Jameis deserves another year or two, preferably behind a better line. That would be interesting.
