Off-field Issues?

November 3rd, 2018

Concerned for Bucs QB’s mental well-being.

Just from watching America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, on TV, a former Bucs player believes something has gotten into Jameis’ head.

Former Bucs guard (1990-1996) and Tampa Bay area radio personality Ian Beckles took to his podcast, “In the Trenches,” and said he’s just about convinced something is bothering Jameis to the point he has become all goofed up in the noggin on the football field.

“I don’t know what is happening in Jameis Winston’s life, but if you are looking through his mask, it sure looked like he didn’t want to be there,” Beckles said of the loss in Cincinnati last Sunday. “He looks like a golfer who has lost his swing. You don’t want to be in front of anybody. And that is exactly where he is.”

Beckles wondered aloud if maybe all of the off-field “adversity” Jameis has gone through in his life since his days at Florida State has finally caused him to crack.

Beckles also joined the chorus of ex-Bucs who have stated Jameis’ fundamentals are a trainwreck. Beckles said specifically Jameis’ footwork is terrible.

Regardless of what the issue is, Beckles believes Jameis is toast in Tampa Bay, maybe not this week, but soon.

“If you are Jameis’ agent, you have to be thinking, ‘It’s time to get out of here. It’s time to run,'” Beckles said. “Because backing up Ryan Fitzpatrick on a bad football team is just, it’s not conducive to big contracts. I think it is pretty evident Jameis is not going to get a big contract here. And it gets to a point sometimes that maybe you have overstayed your welcome because he has his teammates looking at him now. I don’t think they have any confidence in him, nor should they because he doesn’t have any confidence in himself. …

“I think the Jameis era is over. I think it is done. Whether he is here or not I don’t know. Not many quarterbacks have gone from having your picture on the side of the stadium to running the scout team.”

As always, Beckles welcomes feedback and invites readers to forward Bucs questions by e-mailing him at IanBeckles@RadioInfluence.com.

  1. PeterP Says:

This one I agree with. I think all of his off the field problems have cought up to him on the field.

  2. ShutTheBucUp Says:

I know it’s hard to feel sorry for him because he’s a millionaire. But watching his downfall is really sad. I hope he does get his life back on track.

  3. Ndog Says:

Yeah his off field issues are one thing but when the entire team turns on you cause of a diva like Djax, that doesn’t really help either. Then on top of that every single person around the city where you and your family live that has been clearing rooting for him to fail, for a variety of reasons, gets their pound of flesh and has a alternative in Fitz (ok) now gets the loudest voice in the room. This city, team and organization is horrible for him but what do we expect they are horrible for everyone.

How can we be surprised it didn’t work here. What did outside of a few all time greats coming together to temporarily fix this disaster?

  4. SilverBuc Says:

It’s amazing how irresponsible the media has become, making up reasons for a bad game, so much that people start parroting them as if they are fact.

  5. Conte Piscatelli Says:

I’m going to beat others to it.

I absolutely do not feel sorry about millionaire athletes that have lived a life of privilege.

He’ll make more money in NFL career than people make in a lifetime

HELL NO I DON’T FEEL SORRY

  7. AlteredEgo Says:

I feel for the guy with his off field issues and hope he addresses those honestly with a professional…however if he addresses them they same as he does his on field problems nothing will change on and off the field

  8. Buc believer Says:

Another QB that escapes the Quarterback he’ll known as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Congrats Tampa another future hall of fame/Super Bowl winning QB you have managed to destroy. See Steve Young Trent Dilfer Doug Williams among others. Great job we should be proud. BUNCH OF F….ING IDIOTS!!!

  9. Bobby M. Says:

His arrogance has finally caught up with him…..Its easy to be “confident” when the team has a #1 pick invested in you. You can go around pounding your chest knowing everyone HAS to buy what you’re selling……He thought he had everyone fooled on the FSU controversy….He thought he was this big “rah rah” leader who could come from behind at will. Now he’s been exposed….He’s still a clown off the field….Nobody’s buying his motivational tactics and he absolutely sucks. The organization has taken him down from the stadium….Teammates stripped him of being a captain…and coaches have benched him.

Jackson all but said in the offseason….put up or shut up. Winston has put up a turnover in nearly every qtr of play….now he can sit their quietly while the offense runs effectively by a 14 yr journeyman.

  10. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

NDOG it’s crazy to me how many of our fans just bash our players and want them gone as soon as they get here. You could insert any players name where Winston’s is and they all end up in the same outcome. Big reason this team has been in the dumps for a long time. Folks support your team more! Sometimes I wonder if a lot of the fans that come on here aren’t true Bucs fans but transplant fans who have a second team as well…Throw on top the organization gives up on you and how o you expect the outcome to be? Sad times as a true Bucs fan and for the first time in my life I don’t really see the light at the end of the tunnel for this team. Jameis was that light but nobody believing in him or supporting him from day one has doomed this franchise.

  11. Dooshlarue Says:

    Man….. what a hassle .

  12. Defense Rules Says:

@Ndog … “How can we be surprised it didn’t work here. What did outside of a few all time greats coming together to temporarily fix this disaster?”

Very interesting observation Ndog. And no, we shouldn’t be surprised that it didn’t work here. Jameis was anointed to be ‘The Savior’ of a 2-14 team … with a lengthy history of losing … as a 20-year old with TWO years of college ball on a VERY GOOD TEAM under his belt. Ownership & management let the defense rot in place, didn’t do enough to build the trenches, and didn’t really invest in a top-quality running game. So at that point you have an organization (?) with minimal leadership, average (at best) coaching, and a poorly structured team. What could possibly go wrong?

Tony Dungy inherited something not too much different than this in 1995, except that a couple of defensive players were already in-place. Rich McKay & Tony drafted well (for a time), added some quality free agents, and built a respectable TEAM, especially on the defensive side. Then the Glazers got greedy … yes Jon Gruden brought us a Super Bowl in 2002 (I still contend thanks to our defense which Chucky was barely aware existed), but the rest of his years were mediocre (his offenses were meh). Then it went downhill from there as the Bucs’ ownership had zero clue how to build & run a professional football team.

Welcome to Bucsville … hard to see this turning around with the present ownership. And that’s the key reason I still believe we need some ADULT LEADERSHIP … in the form of a highly-experienced President of Football Operations that the Glazers give carte blanche to.

  13. glen k mattingly Says:

I have no idea what is going on inside Winston’s head. Bad game? Bad life decisions? it could be one of the other or both, who know? The coaching staff should know. They are with him every day. They should know.

  14. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Bucs need fresh start & jameis too, new gm coach, not sure where jameis goes but hope bucs get at least a 2 and new gm saban or ronde picking it

  15. SilverBuc Says:

Koetter putting Jameis in that Bears game was the beginning of the end for Jameis in Tampa. He knew his coach didn’t really have his back because, as you could see coming a mile away, people partially blamed JW for the butt kicking that happened to Fitzpatrick and the defense in that Bears game. Koetter knew he was putting him in a horrible situation, he even admitted it, but he did it anyway. You all saw, Jameis wasn’t rusty (80% completion rate),he doesn’t get rusty, he just was facing a great defense that could pin its ears back and play loose. Jameis scores the only TD in that game for the Bucs too.

Then he lights up Atlanta for 400 yards and 4 TDs, gets a large share of the blame for that loss.

Puts the team in position to win the Browns game at the end of regulation, kicker shanks it, go to overtime, throws a pick, then puts the team in position to win AGAIN, but it’s the kicker that gets the “redemption” congratulations. The fans blame Jameis IN A WIN.

I would want outta this situation as well, Jesus Christ.

  16. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Either he has the Freeman BUG or that Whitfield QB whisperer clown really screwed him up during his 3 game suspension.

He is a new father, diaper duty in the middle of the night has effects on your sleep.

  18. OneBucPerson Says:

    @NDog Preach

  19. Kalind Says:

Joe, I know you scour for Bucs tidbits…but this gadfly is just a waste of our time. I’m so tired of Beckles throwing garbage on the walls seeing if he can go viral, or what you’ll post for him to increase his publicity.

Beckles is a clown. I’m tired of hearing him spout this stupidity. Does Beckles offer an alternative? Nope. A plan for the future? Nope. He just says “Jameis is done” and hopes half-wits out there are so supportive they tune in, or are so mad they tune in. It’s obvious. And sad.

  20. Kalind Says:

What people need to realize is: for this year and next…there is no better option. Jameis is the best/only hope. They need to fire bajakian and get an actual QB coach/guru. They need to get him calmed down and back to neutral. Not having him next year is needlessly stupid. Who wants Fitz for 16 games at 36-37 years old? No one (or no one should). If in 2020 there is a better option? Then ok, let’s do it. But this years draft is a nightmare for QBs. FA is worse. So…let me hear it. What’s the plan???

  21. Season Is Over Says:

Yes, it is the fan’s fault that Winston does not win as a NFL QB. These excuse are just comical. Now DJax turned the team against Winston? Lmao! Winston did that wish horrible decisions. The same decisions I have been calling him out for years. I have been calling him Mr. Magoo for over three years because I still think he needs glasses and can not see the field. I think that has become quite obvious by now.

The problem is that Tampa fans are not the idiots that the Glazers wish they were. Tampa fans know when things are correct. They know when to support their team and when to protest. I haven’t bought a ticket since they fired Gruden. Any team good enough to fire a coach with back to back winning seasons can surely do better than the fired coach after a decade. When they are better than Gruden’s last two years I will go again. I miss going to the stadium but I don’t throw money away. Fans like Ndog probably live in another city trying to tell Tampa fans how to be while he blindly polishes his Winston jersey. They have no clue on the pulse of the city and what these fans have been through. Why would anyone want to force Winston onto anyone? All Winston has to do is be a NFL QB and everything will be fine. It is the most simple thing in the world. I fail to see the issue.

  22. Pete I Says:

Winston sucks. He is mediocre at best and terrible at worst. I guess we should be greatful something is in his head, at times its hard to tell.

  23. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Spot on NDog… Even my grandmother said he should be done with the Bucs before he even got back from suspension. She couldn’t believe the way NO ONE stood up for Jameis, as he was never convicted of a damn thing. Not the owners, not his teammates. Not even his agent. He’ll go somewhere else where he’ll have the proper support and coaching and he’ll be successful. No doubt in my mind. Beckles is right. I saw the same thing looking through the face mask of Winston last Sunday. He’s saying all the right things in interviews but his face says so much more. He’s done with the Bucs. Everyone got what they wanted. Now you all can wear the stupid fake beards and wave goodbye to ANOTHER franchise QB.

  24. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

I used to really enjoy listening to Ian Beckles, but what turned me off is that he was LITERALLY the one that turned the Bucs fans against Gerald McCoy, with all the venom that he spewed towards #93 on a daily basis.

  25. dmatt Says:

    Well said Kalind
Beckles is just looking for ratings. If u look over the past 10 years or so, which QB gave us the best chance of winning, right now, I get it The Fitz. However, the last time we had a true QB was Jeff Garcia. He gave Jos Freeman some tips but Josh was not mentally fit. I disagree with Jameis performance but I believe if he departs, he too, will win a ring. He need a true QB coach n we need a real defense. Someone should’ve gotten Winston n DJackson together in private to probe n find out what the problem is. That’s what true leaders do…manage n fix things. Koetter n Litch must go. It was a Smith mistake bringing MSmith back. Jameis is still young.

  26. Knoxville Buc Fan Says:

Bunch of idiots, so what… look it up, in their first 3 years as a STARTER Manning Farve Big Ben and there’s more all threw much more than JW. None of them looked good doing it either. Oh now he needs intervention?

  27. Season Is Over Says:

Gerald McCoy turn the fans against him by taking 16 million per season and fading into a footnote.

  28. Pete I Says:

At best JW might, MIGHT, win in his later years like Plunkett but JW will never be a first pick QB success, ever. What a waste but a waste it is.

  29. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Season is over I travel over 600 miles for each game since 2013 and I can tell you that Winston has not been the main issue with this team. Some games yes but their are far bigger problems then him. He is the hope for this team and until people support his resurgence then we will be in the dumps for at least the next five years and I will be done throwing my money away.

  30. Oneilbucs Says:

Yep Bigpapa they all got what they wanted. That’s why I know some of it or most people on this site felt the way they did cause of his race. And they call for race card all they want . When Dirk left Matt Ryan. MATT Ryan been playing good ever since and no body notice this . They said Jamies had to throw for 400 yards and 4 touchdowns and he did and people still blame him for the lost against the falcons. I got a feeling when Jamies leave this poor franchise and this poor fan base he will get the last laugh. While we suck another 10 years.

  31. Ateonetree Says:

I agree with him the jameis era is over. It’s best for both sides to just move on. I have a weird feeling jameis is going to end up having a fresh start elsewhere and succeeding, but that will never happen here in Tampa. I also don’t think firing Koetter is the answer. This is the best offense in buccaneer history by a mile!!!! With all the weapons on offense we don’t need a franchise

  32. Knoxville Buc Fan Says:

Guess I stepped to hard on toes So am I blocked or WTF

  33. DayOnePaul Says:

    Glazers:

Please sell this team to Jeff Vinik, and go play kickball in England.

  34. Not there yet Says:

Uh Winston’s mediocre at best right now but why are people acting like Fitz the journeyman isn’t also? Like Brent Grimes and a lot of other free agents they come here because they can’t ply anywhere else or they can get one more payday for retiring signed Anthony Collins

  35. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Actually…..His on-field play is so poor that it sort of makes you forget his off-field problems…..
I do agree….Jameis is a mess…..sitting on the bench will either straighten him out or it will ruin him.

  36. ATrain Says:

I Agree Fans need to support

Blaming DJax is stupid He is a competitive and upset a QB can’t get him the ball when the bench guy does

    No Excuses

This team needs a WINNING ATTITUDE

I believe there is a player who has a lack of drive to win. Not Jamies he wants to win

I think the bench will take pressure off him and he may come out firing

    If not well move on

  37. Bird Says:

    ^^^^

Jameis and fitz aren’t playing much different but with throwing ball downfield I think fitz gives them the best chance to win

Difference is Jameis will cost yah 20 mil plus
Fitz can be had for 5-7 mil with escalators up to 10 max. cause you tell him Ryan griffin will get chance to compete to start.

  38. Season Is Over Says:

I have been saying it for weeks. Fitz is the only QB on this team that can win with this defense because he can stretch the field faster. When your defense stops no one you can’t be a dink and dunk QB like Winston and stay in the ball game. The pass attempts are almost dead even when you look at stats (144 Fitz to 148 Winston). Same receivers, defense, TEs and running game. Fitz looks better in every single statistical category.

  39. ATrain Says:

I Agree with Beckles and I’m Tired

SO ATRAIN WILL NOT BASH Winston anymore

WANT THE BUCS TO WIN IM A FAN

  40. jmarkbuc Says:

    @I’m tired…

“Jameis was that light but nobody believing in him or supporting him from day one has doomed this franchise”

    OH puhhlease.. Hero worship much?

Seems to me there was plenty of support for JW on day one. In fact to this day there are plenty of staunch defenders that can’t (or won’t) see that this guy is a phony, on and off the field.

So enamored with two years of college ball and his preacher man speeches… that you couldn’t see that it wasn’t a light at the end of the tunnel it was a huge freakin freight train.

ENOUGH, the guy is not NFL caliber, in a lot of ways…Even robo QB Jared Goff is better and that kid literally does not know which direction the sun rises..

  41. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

I’m rooting for every Buc to be successful as a Buc and I truely do believe the sooner we get behind this team and players the better off we will all be. We need to unite as fans and the one thing we all have in common is we want this team to be successful. We need to believe! Go Bucs! Go Fitz! Go Jameis! Go Defense! Go Catanzaro! Go Bucs fans! We can do this together!

  42. Cobraboy Says:

    Only one conclusion: Mentally weak.

  43. Dapostman Says:

It’s Tiger Woods all over again. I’m betting that when Winston learns the same lessons Tiger has he will go on to have a pretty good NFL career. Hopefully it will be in Tampa but Bucs being Bucs I could see him going to another team and becoming very successful.

  44. stpetebucsfan Says:

OK time for a freaking rant!!!!

I am a Buc’s fan!!! I supported drafting JW #1. I’m not a hater because I’ve changed my opinion. And it evolved slowly. JW personally has TONS of charisma…the award winning smile…why wouldn’t everybody like him? And neither I nor any fan I know have brought down poor baby Jameis. I did not call him up and tell him to hang out with two lowlifes blind drunk at 3AM!!!

I did not throw all the picks…have all the fumbles. I did not need to be restrained by Quarles to keep me from wrecking my career because in my arrogance I was ready to attack an NFL official. If JW had succeeded and gotten to that zebra we’d be praying for a suspension of just three games!!! I did not attack an opponent causing an altercation that got my star player suspended for a game.

All of you Jameis apologists can believe what you want but if you wish to blame the MANIFEST flaws of JW on we fans I say bite my rosy red Irish behind. It’s getting disgusting!!

AGAIN…there was a 50% chance JW would make it..just a statistical fact. This situation is not exceptional at all…IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME IN THE NFL!!!

AGAIN if he turns his life around and succeeds more power to him I’ll be happy. And I could care less if he goes to NE and wins a SB…I care about the BUCS!!!!

Nobody here hates JW….well a tiny minority perhaps? Mostly we hate ints…fumbles…and the incredible arrogance that drives a player to eff up both on and off the field because of poor SELF CENTERED decisions over and over and over again.

I’ve read the lists of all the excuses for JW. How about somebody post a list of all his effups and the reasons he’s struggled.

  45. ModHairKen Says:

Ian Beckles was a below average back up Guard, weak and beaten often, but with a big mouth. His biggest moment was when he was arrested for fondling a police horse while drunk. He is always negative and boring. Why give him any space on this website?

  46. jmarkbuc Says:

    Dapostman

If he does..he does. And I’ll even be happy for him.

Don’t believe that’s gonna happen, but pretty sure it’s not gonna happen here. So let him go get some more OJT on someone else’s dime.

  47. jmarkbuc Says:

    Well SPBF

I see you’re mad as hell, and not gonna take it anymore…

    Good on ya….

  48. Firrrreee Licht Says:

This is by far the most reasonable comments section on Jameis in a long time. I guess there are some good Bucs fans out there. Go Bucs!

  49. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

    Keep Jameis in street clothes

  50. Mike Johnson Says:

Keep Jameis. But Fire the coaching and Mngt staff. Make Father Tony Dungy head of Buc Football Operations and lets start to build a Winner here. I’m sick and GD tired of losing..of..Wishing and Hoping every GD Sunday. SICK AND TIRED OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  51. DB55 Says:

The plan is working!!! This kid threw for 400 yards and 4 TDS in his first game back and these yahoos ragged him for 2 ints. Moreover, they almost lost the game after being up like 16 points with only 10 mins to go. Pathetic!!!

Jameis has heard me and is working his plan to #RunJameisRun

  52. AlteredEgo Says:

It is not the coaching it is the talent….MJ…maybe one day it will be the coaching but that day has not come

  53. Rod Munch Says:

Jesus Christ people, he had one bad game. One. With a decent kicker he’s 2-1 on the year and in that time leads the NFL’s top offense. He’s 3-1 in his last 4 starts including a game winning 90 yard drive with under 2 mins left and no timeouts. He lead the team right down the field against Atlanta when it mattered. He lead the team right down the field against the Browns when it mattered (only to have Dirk play for a FG that was missed). He then goes on the road, on a windy day, and has a bad game.

You fake news drama queens that think this 24 year old with numbers only guys in the HOF have had at his age is a bust – you’re literally an idiot and you should do the honorable thing of shoving your head in a garbage compactor.

    God bless.

  54. westernbuc Says:

Hey maybe he’s a narcissistic entitled numbskull that has skated by every problem in his life. Maybe the chickens have come home to roost and he’s unable to overcome the obstacles he’s created for himself because he’s never had to answer for his actions. Maybe he isn’t a leader at all, maybe it’s time to move on.

  55. tickrdr Says:

MORE than 28% of the offensive drives led by JW3 this year have ended in a TURNOVER by Jameis!
That is like saying we will try to beat you playing only three quarters of offensive football, while our opponents get the full four quarters.

    tickrdr

  56. unbelievable Says:

I said the same thing after last Sunday, that maybe there is something going on in his personal life. He just doesn’t seem the same.

  57. Jaycee Says:

I hope Beckles is wrong about Jameis leaving. If it’s a confidence thing, that can be fixed.

  58. richbucsfan Says:

JW is looking over his shoulder for some reason…Something is either trailing him or he needs some counseling about his alcohol abuse. He is definitely not the same JW. A QB doesn’t just lose his footwork that’s been practiced thousands of times. Something’s wrong internally. Recall, we had a TE that couldn’t put it together with the Bucs, but is doing well with the Jets. He got the help he needed. Hopefully, JW gets the help he needs…and soon.

  59. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Tickdr

I’m not sure the JW sycophants care about facts like that.

Many just keep saying…he had ONE bad game and now we’re bailing on him.

JW has had two OTHER games in his career with FOUR interceptions. Three games prior to this year with THREE ints…are 3 ints considered a bad game? Ten games before this year with MULTIPLE ints. Do we want to even bring up sacks?
Nah because that was ALL on our OL not on JW’s penchant to hold onto the ball too long because he doesn’t see the field.

Fumbles? 25 in the past two years…but that happened because the fans deserted him and didn’t provide enough support!!!

ONE bad game? He started his career with a pick six his very first throw and his last throw…a pick six.

JW may yet have some magic revival to his career…if it’s with the Buc’s that’d be great!!! But Puhleeze stop with the nonsense…ONE game…yeah that’s the ticket.

  60. swissPolitics Says:

    tickrdr
Seriously, you said it so well, that I cannot believe even the biggest jw could misunderstand how bad he is for the team.

This was one game (looking at you Munch). He’s not “it”. Maybe bring him back in 5 years when he achieves the kind of success that you assumed the most “pro ready” qb woulld have. By the way, if you ever described him as most pro ready, stop using his age as an excuse. He is not the foundation of a winning team.

  61. swissPolitics Says:

    NOT JUST ONE game
    Sorry

  62. Ripcurl57 Says:

If beckesl had glowing praise for jmiss, all his haters would be singing how great and knowledgeable he is…sorry jmiss jstrap lovers, the truth hurts, ian is correct.

  63. BrianBucs Says:

Thank You Jason Licht for squandering the #1 pick in the draft on Vince Young 2.0

  64. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Jameis will be fine. Hopefully he gets away from the dumpster fire in Tampa and takes Mike Evans with him.

  65. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Ian Beckles is a hack… he’s made a name on the radio exponentially than he did on the football field. Jameis haters, stop listening to the fake news media who are paid to have opinions and generate clicks.

  66. Mike Smith Says:

Bunch of sell outs! All you guys do is create a culture that chases good athletes away from this organization.
We have some pretty crappy fans – Always bitching about the wrong things.

  67. BigMacAttack Says:

At what point do Licht and Koetter take responsibility for this mess? Jameis has progressively gotten worse, so what does that say? The offensive line still can’t get on the same page. The defensive line jumps offside every series. And these are just their strong points. Let’s not get into the secondary, kicking or linebackers who can’t cover anyone and constantly miss tackles. One can only hope that they protect Fitz and his receivers put up 6 TDs to overcome this debacle.
