“If Jameis Is Not A Starter Again… “

November 19th, 2018

Decision.

At roughly 2:30 p.m. today, the latest episode of “As the Bucs Turn” will be released.

There, at the podium in the media studio of One Buc Palace, Dirk Koetter is expected to announce who will start at quarterback Sunday when the Bucs host the 49ers.

In the grand scheme of the NFL, this is the three-hour equivalent of someone curling up on the couch to work off all the tryptophan they consumed through the Thanksgiving weekend.

No matter what Koetter announces today, it will rile up many Bucs fans.

If it is journeyman backup Ryan Fitzpatrick, then  those who really do believe a guy better suited to solving Rubik’s Cube than zone blitzes will hit the ceiling wondering just what brand of whiskey the Bucs’ Bit-O-Honey-snacking, Ozark-watching coach has been inhaling. Or they’ll wonder if Koetter simply has a personal ax to grind with America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

If Koetter announces Jameis will start, the Jameis haters will erupt and demand Koetter clean out his office immediately thinking Koetter is purposely trying to sink the pirate ship.

In the Court of Public Opinion, Koetter is in a no-win situation, even though he will sell his decision as the best chance to win — as the ice beneath his feet as Bucs coach continues to melt away.

In the eyes of former Bucs tight end John Gilmore, Koetter has no choice. It is Jameis, as Gilmore explained yesterday on a Bucs postgame radio show speaking with host Ronnie Lane.

“I go right back to Jameis,” Lane said. “Why would you go with Fitzpatrick the way he is turning the ball over?”

“You have to go with Jameis,” Gilmore responded. “As much as I like Fitzpatrick, I don’t want to see him again.

“If Jameis is not a starter again, he’s done in Tampa Bay. He will never start again.”

Of course, the anti-Jameis crowd is cheering so loud after reading that last sentence, you would think the Bucs successfully kicked a field goal or that Ronald Jones ran for four yards or Vita Vea made a defensive play.

As Joe wrote this morning, Joe is almost leaning towards wanting Koetter to start Fitzpatrick, as mindless and stupid as that may seem on face value. The goal right now is the future, not the present.

You play for the playoffs or you play for the draft. Fitz gives the Bucs not only the best chance to win Sunday, but to win in the 2019 draft, which could help the Bucs for years down the road long after Fitz solved his last Rubik’s Cube in Tampa Bay.

  1. SteveK Says:

Fitz lost his touch, back to the bench. He did his job to start the year.

Now it’s back to Jameis. I am excited to see what he has. He had 4TDs in 4 drives yesterday, but it could have easily been 1 TD and 3 Turnovers. I’m thankful as hell they all worked out and he brought us back.

I hope Jameis looks sharp this week and asserts himself as our franchise QB. It may be a long shot, but I still hope for the best.

  2. DB55 Says:

Jameis is done in Tampa either way. And it’s a perfect situation for him. The FA QBs include Flaco, Taylor and Fitzpatrick. Who amongst them will sign for less than 20 mil? And who would rather have old beat up QBs rather than Jameis. TAMPA has yet again dug their own graves. Good riddance

  3. Jsmalls Says:

Joe, there’s no correlation between when you draft and having a quality draft. Let’s just win some games to get momentum rolling into next season.

  4. SteveK Says:

    Joe,

I suspect this is the pro Jameis Joe by the “play Fitz for a draft pick” nonsense. That is a sad mentality. For the integrity of the game we need to play to win. It’s ok to play young guys to evaluate for next year, but no damn way do you ever actively lose a game.

How will we ever cure this losing, if we embrace it as you suggest? Did you play team sports growing up?

  5. Jsmalls Says:

Bears have a game changing defense and the two most impactful defensive players, Hicks and Mack were not drafted.

  6. Kobe Faker Says:

    Updated betting line-

Hire Tonu Dungy as President of footbal operations

YES -all your money, 1st child, right leg and left nut

NO +all the money you want, lifetime supply of Viagra, and Stormy Davis

  7. Dapostman Says:

At 3-7 there is really only one correct decision. The only way Koetter has a slight chance to keep his job is if he gets to Winston about ball security over the last 6 games. That’s it. There is nothing to see of improvement from Fitz. Fitz is at his ceiling. Winston on the other hand has room for improvement. If Koetter names Fitz he is done and should be fired immediately. Though I personally think he is done but the Glazers may have a different opinion. Start Winston the last 6 games and let’s see if he can turn the corner. Pretty simple.

  8. Eric Says:

You know one would think that the only possible way Dirk could save himself is for Jameies to play well down the stretch and they somehow get to 7 or 8 wins.

Then he might have some sort of plausible argument.

  9. Mike Johnson Says:

IF..and thats a big IF..The Glazers were smart, They should have the New HC and GM ready to be plugged in at least by the end of January. I sincerely hope they give us fans some fresh Hope next year. Anything..Hell, hire the towel and waterboy.

  10. Jean Lafitte Says:

You and your anti-Jameis, Jameis haters rhetoric is nonsensical BS. Nobody is cheering. I’m pretty damn po’ed. I can’t see any difference between Fitz and Winston except one is 11 years older and white, and the other is 24 years old and black. They both give the ball away like it’s candy. This dividing the fanbase between 2 mediocre QB’s is the real tragedy. Clean house

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You play for the playoffs or you play for the draft.

The Losing Culture at Tampa Bay starts with that philosophy…..

A higher draft pick is a consolation prize for losing….

And as we know full well….it does not assure a better player.

    History speaks to that.

I urge Joe to stop with the calls for tanking.

Sure, you play your younger players and give them experience even if you risk losing more….ad you put players on IR when you normally wouldn’t but you do not play for draft position……EVER…

  12. 813bucboi Says:

well i think if dirk doesnt start winston, dirk is done in the NFL if he isnt already…..he hasnt shown the ability to develop winston or produce points…..

the smart thing would be fire dirk today, and let winston play until the end of the season……after the season hire bruce arians as President of FB ops…..he worked well with licht in ARZ and will stop him from taking kickers in the 2nd round…..then hire Kris Richard as HC….todd bowles as DC….Hue Jackson as OC…..

bucs organization would have 3 former HC’s helping their young up and coming HC…..jackson and bowles are great coordinators…..i doubt any club would want to give them a HC job a year or 2 after what they just did in cleveland and NY……that keeps the staff together…..let bruce have the tom coughlin role that i bet he would thrive in……

Hue would fix winston and score points…..Kris could develop the DB’s and Todd could transform our defense……

    everyone wins…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  13. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

maybe the past few weeks for jameis has rid him of that bs qb coach err guru who might have added to how bad jameis was after his suspension. That qb guru whitfield who im pretty sure does not have any successful nfl qbs under his guidance

  14. Knoxville Bucs Fan Says:

Whoever the starter is,who knows what this idiot is gonna announce. I bet he deactivates one of them and Griffin will get his first game Jersey this week. Dirk has mentioned numerous times he’d love to get him on the field and see what he can do. If the Bucs are up big or down big and if Griffin does get a Jersey I think we could see him. Close ball game not so much. What does he have to lose? His Job? Well he’s already accomplished that

  15. Ndog Says:

I just don’t understand why we are talking about the QB. We have our QB in Jameis now we need to find a coach to maintain our offense and bring some, ANY defense to this team. With an average defense and Jameis running the offense this team wins 10/11 games this year. It really is not that hard to see despite what all the Jameis haters want to believe.

  16. Kansas95Buc Says:

    wait…Dirk is still here?!?!?!

  17. Eric Says:

The difference is that Fitz has been a starter for 13 years.

Jameis for 49 games and history is full of young QB’s who improve in the turnover department.

Some are in the Hall of Fame.

That’s the reason this FItz fiasco is such a waste of time.

  18. Bucs541 Says:

What about the 3rd string QB we were so high on? Obviously both JW or Fitz are a mistake so why not give the other guy a chance? Seriously, Dirk has nothing to lose at this point.

  19. celly Says:

I say start Jameis and in 2019, draft a QB no later than round 3, maybe even 2 and have a legitimate competition.

If Jameis balls out 2019, you can franchise tag him in 2020. And you’d still have that other QB on his rookie contract (obviously).

  20. ben Says:

Ndog… respectfully did you go to the same school as Winston, neighbors ,friends what… why the man crush please..

  21. Troy Says:

Jameis needs to play in game conditions to get better. All of this nonsense about draft position is stupid. We need defensive help and the draft is loaded with talent on that side of the ball.

Just get us a GM that knows talent because Licht doesn’t. He’s completely confused about line talent. He’s been unsuccessful get any in the draft or free agency.

  22. Eric Says:

The only way Licht stays if if JW comes back and plays well.

Otherwise what is his claim to fame? I picked the wrong franchise QB and developed the worst defense in NFL history?

Please let me try that again?

  23. Dapostman Says:

    @Not Justin,

So you are throwing in the Winston interception on a hail mary with 20 seconds to play and ZERO time outs? The one where No Effort DJax gave no effort to? You guys are priceless. Do you even reread the stuff you post?

  24. Joe Blahak Says:

Bring Marinelli back as HC and fix this horrid defense!

  25. Eric Says:

Marinelli went 0-16 head coaching the Lions.

    Hard sell.

  26. T REX Says:

You and your anti-Jameis, Jameis haters rhetoric is nonsensical BS. Nobody is cheering. I’m pretty damn po’ed. I can’t see any difference between Fitz and Winston except one is 11 years older and white, and the other is 24 years old and black. They both give the ball away like it’s candy. This dividing the fanbase between 2 mediocre QB’s is the real tragedy. Clean house.
    —————————————————————–

Nice post. The divided fanbase is awful. Losing is by far the biggest problem but it’s not like JW is good. He’s just another QB. We need a new start and not handcuff the new regime when they come in here by keeping a guy who has 74 turnovers in 49 games.

  27. Knoxville Bucs Fan Says:

0-16 as a head coach no matter who you are is very hard to overcome from a head coaching standpoint.

  28. AlteredEgo Says:

2018 is the most bizarre chapter in Buccaneer history….0-26 was much easier to handle…Leeman Bennett …Ray Perkins…Sam Wyche’s last year….

  29. LifeOfABucFan Says:

If Jameis was a good QB..we wouldn’t have all these arguments at all! The fact is, he is NOT a good QB..

And that’s why the fanbase is so torn in two..and of course, the FSU crowd think he’s a HOF candidate already…lol..

  30. celly Says:

0-16 as a head coach no matter who you are is very hard to overcome from a head coaching standpoint.

Which works out perfect for those that would like Hue Jackson as the OC, because it’s proven that he’s really good at that, but with his horrible job as a HC (especially this second time around), it’s highly unlikely that he gets a third opportunity.

I think the suggestion of David Shaw HC, Hue Jackson OC and Todd Bowles DC is a great one and with success, would probably allow us to keep our staff in tact.

  31. Don Says:

my give a damn is busted…

  32. LakeLand Says:

This is news only in Tampa

    Outside of Tampa
No one gives a hoot who starts for the Yucs

  33. Nprbuc Says:

He has to start Winston. He also has to sit Fitz and activate Griffin! Everyone is high on the kid who has never thrown a ball in an NFL game. Suit him up and have him ready if Jameis implodes again. What in the world is there to lose by giving this kid a chance? After 3 years of taking up a roster spot isn’t it time to see what we have? When either Fitz or Winston leave it would be nice to know if Griffin is for real or if it’s time to go shopping. Why keep a roster spot for3 years wrapped in bubble wrap? Suit him up!

  34. TOM EDRINGTON Says:

My sister doesn’t even follow football and I think she was spot on with this observation:

“Looks to me like it doesn’t matter who they play…”

in regards to Jameis or Fitz……….spot on

  35. tmaxcon Says:

Everyone of dungy’s the clowns coaching shrub failed…

    marinelli is a joke
    edwards a joke (twice)
    lovie dovie a joke (twice)
    caldwell

tomlin is not a dugny guy. different system and philosophies…. he was only with dungy for a cup of coffee so you nuthuggers can’t rewrite history to give dungy credit for the only assistant worth a crap….

it is really comical how the legend of dungy far exceeds his actual accomplishments.

why bring back a proven failure who could not get the job done

why bring back a 500 coach with a career losing record in the playoffs when it matters most

why bring back a dinosaur who fielded some of the worst offensive units in NFL history while in Tampa

why bring back a one dimensional fool who wasted a generational hall of famer in sapp and a generational offense led by arguably the best qb of all time in indiana

a career losing playoff record with one 1 super bowl and you had one of the best defenses of an era and the best offense of a generation and you could not win in the playoffs….. please give me a break….

regular season records mean nothing when you fail in the post season every year.

the goal is the win the trophy not field a bunch of religious hypocrites that go 500 every year and get spanked in the playoffs.

race batters with very creative selective memory who are blind to dungy failures just want black man to have job there is no justification to bring dungy the clown back. game has passed the 1 dimensional fool by.

  36. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Cells

What part of our staff are you trying to keep intact?

  37. Jmarkbuc Says:

I enjoyed Fitz playing..until he turned into turnover 2.0.

I don’t think JW will ever be more than a journeyman..ironic, huh?

Having said that, Play JW the rest of the way and remove all doubt.

  38. Joe Says:

tomlin is not a dugny guy. different system and philosophies…. he was only with dungy for a cup of coffee so you nuthuggers can’t rewrite history to give dungy credit for the only assistant worth a crap….

Tomlin is a Dungy guy. Dungy “recruited” him and hired him. Let’s not twist history. Tomlin is, however, an independent thinker. He’s not hogtied to the Tampa-2 and he does believe in offense.

  39. Joe Blahak Says:

Hire Condi before she gets to Cleveland! 🙂

  40. Nprbuc Says:

Keep Duffner, Monkton and Buckner. Rest of the staff could leave tonight and no one would know they were missing.

  41. Doctor_berto Says:

People saying we drafted the wrong QB obviously have not looked into Mariota’s stats or injury history. You realize the Titans have the number 1 scoring defense in football right? They also have a top offensive line.

  42. Jmarkbuc Says:

regular season records mean nothing when you fail in the post season every year.

At this point getting to the postseason, would be a vast improvement on what we’ve been doing for the last ten years.

Can’t win the whole thing without getting to the postseason

  43. D-Rome Says:

Oh hey, look who it is. tmaxcon is back!

Just curious, what did you think of GMC’s TWO SACKS yesterday?

  44. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Nprbuc

    Buckner hasn’t shown me much….

  45. Jean Lafitte Says:

    Doctor_berto

Nobody is talking about Mariota except you

  46. Jmarkbuc Says:

Whatever we do can we change the god awful uniforms…

At least we could lose without looking(visually) like clowns.

  47. Baz Says:

    @jsmalls
“Bears have a game changing defense and the two most impactful defensive players, Hicks and Mack were not drafted.”

Do you have any idea what you’re talking about? Do you even watch football?
Hicks was a 3rd round pick by the Saints in 2012.
Khalil Mack was the 5th overall pick in the 2014 draft.

  48. Bucsfanman Says:

    Tampabaybucfan Says:

“You play for the playoffs or you play for the draft.

The Losing Culture at Tampa Bay starts with that philosophy…..

A higher draft pick is a consolation prize for losing….

And as we know full well….it does not assure a better player.

    History speaks to that.

I urge Joe to stop with the calls for tanking.”

THIS! So much THIS! It pains my ears to even hear it mentioned and is NEVER a way to build a winning franchise.

  49. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Baz

I think he means not drafted by the Bears..

Meaning a good GM knows how to acquire FA’s

  50. Bucsfanman Says:

tmax- You’re right about retread coaches. Despite the fact that I have ZERO confidence in the Glazers to make a good football decision, that’s exactly what they need to do. Hire a GM that KNOWS football who can hire coaches that are innovative and KNOW football.

  51. LakeLand Says:

The dumb part of this circus came before the game with Washington. Monken and Koetter said that Fitz gives them the best chance to win.

But the thing is, Fitz has a history of struggling against 3-4 defenses. He did this season against the Steelers , Bears. He had more problems against Washington and the Giants.

He threw 6 INTs in a game against Kansas City 3-4 defense back in 2016. When he was the QB for the New York Jets.

  52. Bucsfanman Says:

Also, and I mean really, does it matter who QBs this team? Not to be sarcastic but they both turn the ball over more than tmax takes bong hits, allegedly!

  53. Pickgrin Says:

If the answer is still – “Fitz gives us the best chance to win” – then the GM and/or owners need to step in on this one.

Dirk should be instantly fired if he is intent on keeping Winston on the bench…

  54. BrianBucs Says:

As injury riddled as the 49er defense is and as bad as they are, any of the Buc’s QB ‘s should look good against them.
The Bucs know what they have in Winston and Fitz, so why not start Ryan Griffin? The season is lost, no playoffs, so give him a look. There has to be a reason the Bucs have kept him around for 3 years and he looked very good in preseason. So why not?

  55. tmaxcon Says:

    Joe

so every coach tomlin worked for 5 minutes gets credit. I see…. good to know the rules!

  56. AlteredEgo Says:

I think both sides of the ball should finish the season coach less….fire all the coaches and let the players game plan and call their own plays during the games for the remainder of the season….that might hold my interest…it has been several games since I actually sat down and watched the Bucs whole game…TV & radio are on but I am doing other stuff around the house

  57. GhostofSchiano Says:

    @Tmaxcon

you gave a lengthy in depth analysis for who should NOT be President of Bucs football operations, but you never said who SHOULD be.

Well you may want to sit down for this. just read a report where Gerald McCoy may retire after this year and his name was considered to be on the short list for the position. I know how you feel about him and all but just think….tasty soft serve Ice cream will be served at all the concession stands through out Raymond James.

  58. Joe Says:

so every coach tomlin worked for 5 minutes gets credit. I see…. good to know the rules!

Not exactly sure that this means.

  59. Tony LA Says:

    Joe,

Why does this site and most of the commenters placate the ignorant Buc fans who think Fitz should start?

This is NOT a no-win situation as you describe.

100 percent of national media this morning think Jameis should start and that the Bucs should see what they have in him the rest of the season.

    Everyone.
    All of them.
Every knowledgeable sports person thinks the same thing.
Why does anyone care what the grumpy, ignorant, miserable Buc fans think?

  60. Sapp STFU Says:

Koetter is gone if he doesn’t win out. What does he care if he saves Griffin for the next regime? Start Jameis, put Griffin as back-up. If Jameis falters, insert Griffin. At least we’d know what we have.

  61. Kansas95Buc Says:

    @Joe,

Is there any reason you know of why we have 3 QBs on the roster?

  62. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Tony

Are you saying that there haven’ t been any pro Jameis articles on this site?

Everybody has an opinion, rightly or wrongly…

  63. JimmyJack Says:

Dungy is in the HOF. We could use a Hall of Famer in the building to help clean this mess. Too bad he would likely take a job at Walmart before going back to work for the Glazers.

  64. BucEmUp Says:

Neither one of these quarterbacks would turn the ball over this much if the defense didn’t force them to try and score on every possession. Maybe if our qbs had a C hair of confidence of the defense getting off the field, and didn’t constantly have to be in a race with the opposing offense scoring at will they wouldn’t force throws that are not there.

Its going to be a catastrophic mistake to cut Winston. This team needs a defense it a really that simple

  65. AlteredEgo Says:

Break it down folks..it is talent not coaching especially on the defensive side of the ball….keep Koetter and Licht one more year with a new DC and overall and upgrade of defense…which if you can be honest with yourself was sacrificed building the offensive arsenal for Jameis…

  66. joestang Says:

Joe you are assuming this team can draft quality players. Can you tell me other than going back years when we had a good quality draft with Licht at the helm. It wont happen we cannot trust him with these crucial decisions.

  67. JimmyJack Says:

Altered Ego WTF……..Just no dude. I’m tired of watching an unprepared uncompetitive team getting blown out all the time. We get blown out of games and we get blown out in the standings.

I don’t understand why you would be willing to endure anymore of this unprofessional football……..just no.

  68. JimmyJack Says:

Alted Ego how about you break it down because I am confused. Tell me how it’s not on the coaching that we were not prepared to cover S.Barkley coming out of the backfield? How is this not on coaching?

Do you need more examples of similar plays? I can rattle them off all day.

  69. JimmyJack Says:

That’s without mentioning in-game decisions or personal decision. I could write all day about those.

You can not explain any of those issues and not fault coaching.

    WTF are you talking about?

  70. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

If Jamies doesn’t start next Koetter needs to be fired immediately and replaced by a goldfish

  71. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

LOL, the haters are just so angry. A Hail Mary with 23 seconds and a soft a$$ reciever that won’t fight for the ball, but fk it dude, it was an INT and it fits my narrative so I am gonna pounce on it. If you couldn’t see all the positives JW brought running that offense yesterday you are just an angry fool.

  72. Bucsdelight Says:

Let’s see what Griffin can do. Next man up.

  73. AtlBuc Says:

I want Jameis to play well but I don’t want to pile on useless wins. Im sure the defense will help out in that regard

  74. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Lol Bucsdelight! Yeah you probably want Buckner to take over as HC too. I have no interest in watching a 3rd stringer come in and puke all over the field. You really want to dump Winston without letting him play it out and making an informed decision. Sounds ideal to be forced into drafting a QB next year and ignoring the defense with that premium pick. Ryan Griffin is 3rd string for a reason. All of you guys saying give him a shot are ridiculous.

  75. Bucsdelight Says:

TouchDownTampaBay, What do you mean “let him play it out”, there is nothing left to see. He isn’t our future. He is a flash in the pan on some days and crap on the rest. Nothing new here. Griffin can’t play any worse that what we’ve already seen.

Also, puking all over the field is exactly what we have seen this season, minus the first two weeks.

  76. Bucsfanman Says:

TDTB- 3rd string QB is quickly becoming a fan-favorite! LOL!

AtlBuc- “useless wins”?! I take it you’re with the “tanking crowd?”!!! That’s why this franchise is so snake-bitten, because of that mentality. Might as well not even play the games then.
Change the mindset. Accept nothing less than hearing that final gasp for air as we stand firmly on the opponents throat.
We won’t win out but show some G-D pride! This is football.

  77. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

He most certainly can play worse…way worse. Winston drove the team to 4 TDs in just over a quarter. He holds nearly every team passing record. He can be inconsistent at times, but he is far from a bust. I can tell you just don’t want him around, but I think he definitely can be the right guy with a bit more experience and better coaching. You guy have your Griffin, Glennon and McCown guys again, but I will ride with Winston for a while.

  78. Jim Says:

I’m sure Dirk starts Winston and I hope he subs in Griffith. All this drama,..huffing and puffing is silly; the season is toast…

  79. AtlBuc Says:

bucsfannman – Thats right, useless wins. If we are not going to the playoffs we can get a good draft pick. This team does not have to tank so this conversation is furile

  80. Bucsfanman Says:

We don’t have to and shouldn’t. You’re right, “futile”! LOL! Just mad I guess.
Still need to change that mindset AtlBuc!

“I ain’t got time to bleed!”

  81. ATLBuc Says:

BUCSFANMAN I’ve been with the Bucs since they came into the league. My trophies were on the bookcase on the John McKay show. So I care more about their future than an empty 5 game winning streak. We can’t even play for momentum because a new staff is going to turn things over so the only things I can hope for is a good draft pick and for my franchise QB to get his mind right

  82. Bucsfanman Says:

Longtime fan here too. I just can’t stand the losing and the manner in which we have been doing it for far too long!
You think a new GM/HC will retain Jameis? Serious question, not argumentative. Me personally, I don’t think they keep him. “Clean slate” and all.

  83. jmarkbuc Says:

    @BucEmUp

“Neither one of these quarterbacks would turn the ball over this much if the defense didn’t force them to try and score on every possession.”

That is a completely ridiculous argument. Right up there with JW is Only 22, 23, 24 yrs old…

The job of any offense is to score ON EVERY POSSESSION…they don’t always do so, but that’s the object of the game.

The offense is not FORCED into anything. The only thing being forced are terrible throws…. JW’s last one in Cincy, Fitz’s sidearm crap yesterday, have nothing to do with the Defense forcing them to score. SMDH

  84. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Jameis isn’t done in Tampa… Lol at the Jameis bashers. Bashing Jameis is all about ignorance. The Jameis Bashers are a group of ignorant fans that have a deep rooted hatred for the man. Jameis Bashers need help. They may be jumping off the skyway bridge when he gets his next big deal in Tampa.
