“It Is Time To Change”

November 18th, 2018

Former Bucs guard wants change.

Ian Beckles has seen enough.

The former Bucs guard and popular local radio personality took to his podcast, “In the Trenches” just a few hours after the Bucs lost to the Redskins last week and is revolted by what he has seen. And he’s seen it long enough.

Beckles, in so many words, is calling for Team Glazer to have a housecleaning at One Buc Palace. And like another former NFL offensive lineman, he believes Team Glazer is better off throwing people off the pirate ship sooner than later.

“This is probably as low as I felt,” Beckles said. “We have been worse but we were bad when expectations were not high. … The only thing you have to do now is to start over. Whatever Dirk Koetter and Jason Licht have tried to create to this point is just not working. Period. It is time to change.

“I don’t know if it is time to change now, but I’ve got news for you: It’s better now than later. Because they are falling off real quick.”

In particular, Beckles is aghast that America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, continues to be benched.

“It doesn’t make sense to put Ryan Fitzpatrick out there,” Beckles hollered. “It doesn’t make sense. He’s not going to be our quarterback next year. Period. Jameis still has a chance to be our quarterback next year. It’s still a possibility. Somebody may come in here and say, ‘I can fix Jameis.’

“I get it two weeks ago when you are 3-4 and still had a little chance. But now 3-6, why are you going with a 35-year old quarterback out there who is not going to be your quarterback next year?. It. Doesn’t Make. Any. Sense.”

Beckles believes if Koetter still tries to force Fitz upon the Bucs, Team Glazer will have to step in and order Koetter otherwise.

Other thoughts Beckles offered:

* The way the defense couldn’t dominate a beaten up Redskins front line proved the Bucs have “no dogs” on defense other than JPP. “Back in the day when the Bucs were the sh!t defensively, they would have ate that team up! Guaranteed! … JPP can’t do it by himself.”

* The Bucs are not being coached up. “I think they need some guidance, I really do. The coaches obviously can’t figure it out. I see guys out of position. I see people in the wrong gaps. I see blocking schemes that don’t make any sense. It’s past the halfway [point] of the season now.”

* Called rookie defensive tackle Vita Vea “Sohhfft.” Beckles added that Vea “is a 350-pound slug. I saw him getting dumped by one guy. Warren Sapp warned us.”

* As for Sapp, Beckles thought Lavonte David and Kwon Alexander were way out of line going after Sapp on Instagram recently. Beckles added Sapp wears a gold jacket and deserves respect. “We always hear how great Lavonte David is but that hasn’t led us to anywhere.”

* On left tackle Donovan Smith, Beckles claimed Smith “does his bonehead stuff every week.” Beckles did not elaborate.

* On Bucs Bit-O-Honey-snacking, Ozark-watching Dirk Koetter, Beckles thinks Koetter “is trying to go out on his own terms I guess. If you are going to get fired. … Dirk Koetter doesn’t know what he wants to do anymore. He’s lost the team. He’s lost the locker room.”

* Believes Martin Grammatica could come down out of the broadcast booth and kick 30-yard field goals better than Chandler Catanzaro.

* Cannot understand how Mike Evans and O.J. Howard have not been targeted much in recent weeks. Thinks DeSean Jackson and Evans are playing just like JAGs (just-a-guy), which signals possibly they are fed up. Beckles also thinks Jackson is what he has always been, “a bellyacher.”

* Likes Peyton Barber’s heart and hustle but he’s not being helped by an offensive line that is better at pass blocking than run blocking.

* Predicts doom and gloom through the end of the calendar year. “It is going to get bumpy from here on out,” Beckles said. “We have to start over and clean the slate.”

As always, Beckles welcomes feedback and encourages readers to forward Bucs questions by e-mailing him at IanBeckles@RadioInfluence.com.

  1. Buc fan in Japan Says:

As much as I hate to admit it, Beckles argument is pretty solid…it’s the Bucs in a nutshell.

  2. Bucsfan3 Says:

My thoughts exactly. This whole QB saga is more telling of Koetter than anything. Why would a head coach start a QB with conditions of Fitz while having a young gun with potential (to be determined) on the bench. Why would any logical coach continue this illogical reasoning.

  3. Stravenite Says:

Koetter is done with Winston, can’t say it because it takes any
    possible trade value to zero.
Can’t throw an accurate deep pass / goes with his own plays
rather than called / lost his team – did not even get the captain
vote ( if Koetter has lost the locker-room then Jameis has lost
the offense – its obvious ) / can’t throw without staring down
his chosen receiver / doesn’t lead the team.
Oh yeah almost forgot about all the int’s, the last one at Cinci
was so poor, but indicative of his current form.

Koetter is now so regretting why he was not listened to
when he wanted to go with Mariotta.

Just think of who has developed after Jaymiss and where he is
    relative to them :-

    Wenz / Goff / Mahomes / Watson

Would you ever swap any of them for Winston ?, not a chance
and that doesn’t even include his decision making off the pitch !

He’s history and we all know it !

  4. WalkdaPlank Says:

“Team Glazer will have to step in and order Koetter otherwise.”

It Team Glazer knew anything about football this probably would’ve already been done. I am no fan of Winston but Beckles is right, playing him is the right move as he can increase his value and maybe (unlikely) turn his career around with the Bucs. Unless the Glazers flat out don’t like Jameis as a person.

How interesting would it be to be a fly on the wall in the front office, huh?

  5. richbucsfan Says:

Let’s keep in mind if #3 plays and gets hurt, the Glazers are on the hook for his salary. So, he’ll sit the rest of the season. Simple business.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Has anyone considered that it is actually the Glazers who have kept Jameis benched…….”step in and make Koetter play him”??????

Perhaps they were so fed up with the Uber “hassle” and the fact that Jameis lied and didn’t inform the team…that they gave him one last chance to perform on the field and he failed.

Now, I agree that we should be playing Jameis…..but just saying this may be coming from the Glazers because Koetter is looking like a fool.

  7. Kobe Faker Says:

“1 more loss they will go back to JW because they would be almost mathematically eliminated…

Koetter knows he will be fired end of the year. Klueless thinks if he can win the next 2 winnable games he can get to 5-6 and run the table”

“With our Tampa luck, Klueless will win the next 2 games and JW will only play the last 4 games”

  8. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Look, unless you are in the locker room, don’t sit here and comment how Jameis lost the locker room. Straight speculation and BS if you ask me.

A couple weeks ago when Jameis first got benched the Bucs did an interview with Brate I believe. Brate slipped and said this is still Jameis’ team but we support Fitz. He knew he messed up but his true feelings came out. Winston is this team’s leader and everyone knows it.

So go ahead and say he has lost the locker room, I will wait for any shred of evidence. Meanwhile his teammates continue to say its Jameis’ team.

Also go ahead and paint the picture that he has played 4 years yada yada. 48 games is 3 years…

This season has not exposed Winston. Whoever sees it that way has wanted to see it that way for years.
This season has exposed Koetters inability to be a HC and Lichts inability to build a roster. If either of these guys did their job successfully, Winston is still starting and showing he belongs on this team.

  9. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Alaska,

Kobe agrees with you that absolutely every player has JW back EXCEPT

    Djax

He is, was, and always will be a selfish cancer

Djax doesnt have a paycheck end of this year and he wants to blame someone if his stats dont look good. He is jumping ship from the losing bucs season….and then klueless makes cancer Djax captain …smh!”

I don’t agree. He would be deactivated then. I’m not a Winston fan, but playing Fitz at this point makes no sense.
I’m torn as a fan of the BUCS… this love… truly hurts.
    Hire a New age coach

  11. Bobby M. Says:

Winston isn’t being handed anything else….There’s nothing wrong with establishing that for the locker room. If Fitzpatrick continues to fail, then so be it…If Fitz gets hurt then Winston goes in. But Winston has been handed the opportunity more times then anyone on the team….and the results have led to 70+ interceptions, suspensions, benched, loss of captain role, ownership took his face off the side of the stadium…..He sits where he deserves to sit. If the entire team shuts down what exactly are you going to witness from Winston any ways?….He needs d@mn near an entire team effort just to mask his screw ups on a good day. Nobody is buying what he’s selling.

  12. WutdaBucisthis Says:

@Bobby… I would throw Griffin in if we lose today. I agree #3 ain’t it. Let’s see what the other Ryan got.
Damn.. what happen to our season? I’m crushed… fan since ’79

  13. Bucnjim Says:

Might go back to the fact that if he gets hurt they owe him $21 Million

  14. Maddognavy Says:

Hit the nail on the head, ownership has let this become a bigger fiasco than it was to begin with. This “ we don’t fire coach’s during the year” is absolutely ridiculous. As for Vea, if he’s soft well dammit his coach should be turning that around and quickly. Black Monday will be interesting for sure.

  15. T REX Says:

The winston idiots are really trying to sell that because Winston has only played 48 games it’s really only his third season?

LOL. You have to be a freaking low grade moron to even try to argue that.

Some of the winston fanbois are right. We have the dumbest fans. Sad that we have complete idiots that want to put a garbage human being ahead of the team.

    Sad days here in Tampa.

  16. Alanbucsfan Says:

The biggest problem has been the personnel whiffs on defense-
Bucs used to have Bennet and Clayborn as DE’s
    Mason Foster was middle linebacker
    Mark Barron was traded
    DJ Swearinger
    Bradley McDougald

And why is Sweezy part of successful running game at Seattle but Bucs didn’t see fit to keep him?

  17. DBS Says:

Put him in. Watch him throw more picks. Fumble more. And make more
boneheaded playes will increase his trade value?

  18. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

canadian bacon could be a better RG than the turnstile there today too

  19. Grt1 Says:

T Rex I’m not the moral police and neither are you. For all of Jameis faults he’s never been charged with anything. There’s a bunch of people in this country that have done a lot worse and are in more important positions that dictate and impact our communities. It’s a damn football team we need talent not Boy Scouts, if you don’t like it go fishing ( scratch that I don’t need anymore idiots out there ) or just change the channel.

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Given a choice between Koetter and Winston, I choose Winston.

However, I do not agree with firing Koetter during this season.

Click my name to see the head coaching candidates I suggest.

  21. T REX Says:

@ Grt1 what are you babbling about? Moral police and boy scouts? Lol. 73 turnovers in 48 games. Bust. I’m not asking for choir boys. Just decent humans that can play pigskin. Sounds like you’ve spent too much time with the fish. I’ll watch and my eyes will bleed like always but I’ll still be a Bucs fan. Make sense? I’m a Bucs fan not a Winston fan. I’m for the name on the front of the jersey…not the back. F Winston.

  22. passthebuc Says:

We are so far down it looks like up.

  23. passthebuc Says:

Bring in Father Dungy as president of football operations. Although he probably does not want a headache.

  24. PhillyBuc Says:

Joe, how come you didn’t list what he said about McCoy?

  25. bucsnole Says:

    @WutdaBucisthis
    I agree with that
I think at some point soon JW gets another start – otherwise they would just deactivate him.
I would love to see what another coaching staff – QB coach and OC could do with this team – not a fan of our drafting/FA moves (altho JPP was a steal) and the boneheaded decisions being made by our HC

  26. Bosch Says:

Beckles is correct that a complete house cleaning is needed. But he left out the most essential component. The Glazers have got to go. Fans can make that happen, if they would only BOYCOTT THE GLAZERS!!!!!!

  27. Bobby M. Says:

@WutDaBucIsThis….The Griffin situation is bizarre to me, I don’t get the “top secret” approach with him at this point other then it kills trade value for Winston if the team starts Griffin. I generally believe teams will play the people who give them the best strategic advantage….There’s no tape on Griffin so he would be a challenge to game plan for a few games….One would think that might present some value to coaches playing for their jobs but he doesn’t seem to be a real option. Its amazing teams like the Ravens….Chiefs last year…can have TWO valid starting QB options on their rosters and we cant find even one decent one.

  28. Bosch Says:

Bobby raises a good point. Why not find out what you have in Griffin. And if they have given up on Winston (or just plain fed up with him) then why isn’t he the emergency qb? There is more to the Winston story than any of us know.

  29. Bosch Says:

Alaska and Kobe, we know Winston has lost the locker room because he was not elected Captain. That is virtually automatic for qb’s. Even Cam Newton’s teammates voted him captain. Remember when Josh Freeman was vot voted captain?

  30. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

Heckles is pretty much spot on with his assessments here…I’m I’m not always a fan of his. DK is a bit of a “snotty” fella at times…makes me think back to Week 17 when he went from antagonizing Sean Payton to a Deion Sanders backpedal when he realized Payton was truly pissed. Back to Idaho you go, Dirk. I just wish the Bros. Glazer would send you home for the holidays vs end of season.

  31. BigMacAttack Says:

It sure would be nice if Ian was wrong but he’s not. I can’t wait to hear Dirky’s excuses this week while Licht continues to hide under his desk.

  32. PSK Buc Fan Says:

The Glazers need to man up and stop this train wreck before Dirk destroys the place. Each week that goes by makes it that much harder for the next coach to fix this mess.

  33. JimmyJack Says:

Dork I’m sorry it didn’t work out but can you please do us a favor on the way out? Can you please give us a decent kicker before you go. I don’t think it’s asking to much.

  34. Joe Says:

canadian bacon could be a better RG than the turnstile there today too

Last week Beckles said he’s 51 and could play better than Benenoch.

  35. Buc believer Says:

@Bigmack…. he is under the desk but I do t think he is hiding… I think he is working to try to save his job.
