Galling Defense
November 20th, 2018This makes Joe just want to pull a Bobby Knight and sail a chair across the room.
Per the fingers of Greg Auman of The Athletic, opposing quarterbacks have had an absolute freaking field day with the Bucs pass defense, specifically the back-seven, in recent games.
The Bucs defense has defended a grand total of two passes in the past three games — TWO!
So let Joe get this straight: Only twice in the past 70 times quarterbacks have put the ball in the air has a Bucs defender officially defended a pass? There are no words!
Outside of Jason Pierre-Paul and Vita Vea (hey, he’s just a rookie) and maybe Justin Whitehead (who is also a rookie but isn’t scared to hit), the entire defense needs to be blown up. Cut, traded, whatever. Sure, add Carlton Davis to the keepers list. Maybe with decent coaching he will turn out OK.
Look, 11 guys pulled off the street can’t do any worse. Don’t give Joe injuries. Every friggin’ team has injuries.
This is just outrageous!
November 20th, 2018 at 9:05 am
The injury thing is nonsense. The players completely suck and the coaching sucks. It cannot be tolerated any longer.
November 20th, 2018 at 9:05 am
draft Davis Allen…DE
November 20th, 2018 at 9:06 am
David Allen DE
November 20th, 2018 at 9:06 am
1 int in 336 pass attempts for our defense. pathetic.
November 20th, 2018 at 9:09 am
By no means is Mike Smith a good defensive coordinator. He ran an awful outdated scheme and showed no signs of in game adjustments or even adjustments in the coaches office. But if Jason Licht supplied Mike Smith with good players we would of had an average defense. SImple as that. The Jimmies and the Joes over rule the Xs and the Os.
The only coach fixing this defense with that personel is Belichick.
November 20th, 2018 at 9:11 am
We also don’t get called for PI, illegal contact or defensive holding……because we are not close enough to the receivers to commit a penalty
November 20th, 2018 at 9:11 am
Forgive me, I made these same points already this morning, but this is probably the better capsule to do so.
The Bucs opposing QB’s have 25 TD’s and 1 INT.
THINK ABOUT THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If the Bucs were averaging 25 points per game….
25 points!!!!!!
They would be 8-2.
Yikes. Good Lord.
November 20th, 2018 at 9:12 am
(averaging 25 points given up)
November 20th, 2018 at 9:32 am
Another reason GM Licht needs to be fired. Going into the season with Brent Grimes as your #1 CB at age 35, Conte at safety and a bunch of rookies? What exactly were your expectations? Picking Vita Vea #1 was another idiotic choice by Licht and he needs to go very soon.
November 20th, 2018 at 9:41 am
we need an HC who has a proven track record of developing players especially our young DB’s……someone who knows what a winning team looks like and someone who has been apart of a winning culture…..
that coach is KRIS RICHARD!!!!!!!
no doubt players like grimes, LVD, GMC, gholston, conte, urein, beau allen, taylor, bond all need to go but the right coaching can save players like j.evans, ryan smith, VHG, MJ, VV, nassib i.johnson and the rookies we draft in the future…..
get coaches in here that know how to develop players!!!!!!!!
#NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!
November 20th, 2018 at 9:51 am
What you will never hear from joe because of his personal grudge, is about defensive takeaways!!!!!! Coach Smitty defense caused 60 takeaways in 37 games!!!!!!!
and now all we hear is silence from joe!!!!!!!!
GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
November 20th, 2018 at 9:52 am
Well that is what we have on defense, guys off the street at LB, joe dirt wasn’t even on a team and now he is our starting mike, Isaiah Johnson (who), starting at safety, outside of GMC who is 30, JPP who is almost 30, we have to lol forward to Nassib for the future who has been a nice find, but was cut by the Browns. Long way to go, Ned some nasty athletic ability on defense from somewhere.
November 20th, 2018 at 10:00 am
We all agree that the defense can’t get worse, so:
Trade the soft Ice Cream Man for ANYTHING! (by the time this team is a contender again he will be retired, no need to be here)
#1 pick on a pass rushing DT
#2 pick on future QB or CB

LakeLand Says:
April 30th, 2018 at 10:21 am
I thought the pick would be LSU CB Donte Jackson or Isaiah Oliver. MJ Stewart is another slow CB, and so is Carlton Davis. I thought they were going with the speedy Jackson. I also thought they were going with the speedy Derwin James at SS. But they went with another slow guy at SS. It looks like the Bucs want the slow guys who can hit, instead of getting faster in the secondary.
Derwin James | 4.47 40 yard dash
Donte Jackson | 4.32 40 yard dash
Welcome to Suckville USA
Home of the “Slowest” defense in the NFL
November 20th, 2018 at 10:11 am
Just keep JPP, Nassib Carlton Davis and Whitehead, Please trade GMC, Beau Allen, Curry, Unrein, Gholston and Spence.
November 20th, 2018 at 10:13 am
But QB is a problem so let’s get The Vapors over it.
Sheesh…
November 20th, 2018 at 10:19 am
Mike Smith is still laughing over that fat contract he got so no other team would swoop in and make him their head coach.
Which most people on here were actually afraid of.
Why cant we ever get a proven winner like Andy Reid in here. I know they don’t grow on trees but you would think we would luck into one eventually.
Of course if we lost in the playoffs or super bowl our numb-nutted fan base would scream bloody murder.
November 20th, 2018 at 10:24 am
Y’all are nuts if you think a DE is going to help… We need CBs and safetys…. How likely is it a DE defends a pass? If grimes had an ounce of dignity he would retire mid season like the buffalo guy, but instead he will continue to hammer his unearned paycheck , go Bucs !
November 20th, 2018 at 10:26 am
We need a scheme change more than anything. Whitehead, Davis and Evans are solid building blocks for this secondary.
November 20th, 2018 at 10:26 am
It’s the culture and it’s been here since Chucky’s futile final days.
I do not know how to break it and change it. It’s a unique talent. Lot’s of coaches that can win with the right guys still can’t change a bad culture. We have to find the guy who changes the culture and the rest will take care of itself.
November 20th, 2018 at 11:02 am
The A bomb needs to be dropped on this D badly. With Gerald McCoy being ground zero.
November 20th, 2018 at 11:08 am
A generational playmaker Safety would be nice…there were really 2 in this draft. I know, I know, ifs and buts…Vea may turn out and maybe Ronald Jones too, but going into the draft, Licht had just signed like 4 defensive linemen, he signed the number 1 center in FA, which we needed so he (Dirk and Warhop) didn’t stupidly play Marpet at Center again. People want to blame Jameis a lot on this sight, probably just to start sh*t and who knows if they really feel that way or if they love to stir the pot, but look at the o-line that he has had to deal with for his time here. Should have taken D James and an O-lineman 1 and 2, it was so obvious that even the biggest idiot could see that you just fixed the D-line with a band-aid now we need to protect the QB and get a playmaker in the D Backfield. Okay now having said that- Licht or whomever is here at GM needs to fix this offensive line 1st and foremost. We drafted (or signed through FA) 2 safeties and 2 or 3 corners. we are gonna have to ride those guys for a year or 2. At RB Barber has proven he can run when given the holes and can even shake a tackler or 2 when he is hit in the backfield. #44 has proven he can return kicks-just straight forward and was best at running than Wilson and RoJo in pre-season. Give this kid a chance-just because he wasn’t drafted doesn’t mean he isn’t better than those that were. Kick D Jax and bring up Bobo, if he sucks or causes problems, kick him too. At least he won’t refuse to return punts. Humphries is solid but he is our true #3 and needs to stay in the slot.
November 20th, 2018 at 11:11 am
In 4 years Dirk Koetter has taken us from one of the worst offenses in the NFL to the number 1 offense in the NFL!
Dirk Koetter deserves another year.
Fire the entire defensive staff. Fire Licht. Hire new GM. Hire new defensive staff.
Keep Koetter on offense.
We are so close!!
November 20th, 2018 at 11:29 am
Looks like we know now why the Eagles let Curry and Allen walk……….
Hopefully they walk to a new sucker, I mean team next year.
November 20th, 2018 at 11:33 am
This defense is sucking my will to live. I would love to see a mediocre defense…
November 20th, 2018 at 11:41 am
It’s still Smitty scheme, they didn’t change much up. The dba are still 1t yards away when catches are.made.
Enough with assignments and zone.coverage. Pick a man, cover him and send the blitz for.once
November 20th, 2018 at 11:43 am
If you watched the Chiefs-Rams game last night (what a game!), you got a glimpse of the new NFL. Forget the running game. Good QBs are putting up so many points, you get to a point where running isn’t going to get it done. You need RBs that are also good receivers. We better get a good, young defensive coordinator and start building a strong back 7, and quick, or we will be maintaining our longstanding position in the basement of the NFC South for many years to come..
November 20th, 2018 at 11:45 am
Isn’t Conte eligible to return this week? I haven’t heard anything about him practicing. He’s our only hope at this point.

That’s why I said that Jason Licht was dumb for signing and drafting run-stuffers.
LakeLand Says:

He’s good against the run, but I have one question
Why would a team run the ball against the 32nd ranked pass defense
The 32nd ranked defense in sacks
What good is a $15 million run-stuffer
When teams will be throwing for 400 yards a game against this defense
November 20th, 2018 at 11:54 am
DE Pierre-Paul, Nassib
DT Vita
LB David, Alexander, Beckwith
CB Davis
S Whitehead, Evans
and the rest can go…. David and Alexander barely made the list.

I agree.
Winston or not, this offense is too effective, even without much of a running game, to throw in the trash.
I’d gut the entire D side of the ball, top to bottom, keep a tiny handful of players, and retool. No D can be this bad. The only way is up.
O needs one RG. The old cliche of “a chain is only as strong as its weakest link” is true, and Benenoch drags this O, especially in the running game, down.
November 20th, 2018 at 12:06 pm
@Brandon: I would lose both David and Alexander. Their combined cap #’s could be better spent.
And since Alexander used his speed to cover for his serious deficiencies, that knee is in question. Just a couple of clicks slower would make Alexander a liability.
Start from scratch.
It can’t get any worse.

It’s about what I expect from the talent level we have
Draft better and watch the coaches all of a sudden be better coaches
November 20th, 2018 at 12:58 pm
realist
why are you still talking about smitty and his trash a$$ defense!!!!!!….lol…
pull your skirt down and finish helping smitty pack his U-HAUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…lol…

Fire Koetter and hire Rex Ryan now. Keep the offensive staff with Monken being the offensive coordinator. Allow Rex to evaluate the defense, including staff and see who fit his scheme for next year. We need a tuff nose defense and Rex can bring it.
November 20th, 2018 at 1:28 pm

Are you serious? Koetter has no clue what’s happening defensively. He’s supposed to be “head coach” not offensive coordinator. We need someone who can run the entire team not just one unit.
November 20th, 2018 at 2:54 pm
So when the defense players suck, we blame the players directly. But when JW sucks we blame “not enough coaching”, or the right coaching.
November 20th, 2018 at 2:59 pm
I’m sorry, Joe. But I think you are 100% wrong and looking at this all wrong.
Hear me out…
Did you watch the game last night, the Monday nighter?
Did you see which team won?
The Rams.
Led by Jared Goff and Aaron Donald.
Both of these guys were on the abysmal Jeff Fisher team.
People thought Goff was a complete talent-less bust.
You know Tod Gurley – the fantasy football dynamo?
Look at his numbers under the final season of Jeff Fisher.
BUST
What changed?
Yes – a few key players were brought in, but a decent percentage of this 10-1 Rams team played under Jeff Fisher.
Good coaches came in with adaptable schemes that fit the talent on the roster.
And… voila!
So… should the Bucs blow up the roster? or should they bring in a young, innovative coach who is smart enough to hire sage vets as his coordinators and then add complimentary pieces that gel everything together?
My money is on the latter
Watch Jameis flourish under a better coach.
Watch someone who understands how to utilize Rojo’s speed make him useful?
Watch the defense improve with an actual scheme in place
November 20th, 2018 at 3:14 pm
Lakeland, re importance of having a stellar defensive backfield – never questioned your logic. Don’t agree with all of your positions, but they’re usually well reasoned.
I’m not down on the talent on this team as much as other posters. I put the blame more on the scheme and coaching. However, overall strategy for what a good football team looks like and where it needs to be strongest is certainly partly on Licht’s shoulders. He got the offensive part right but missed on elevating the importance of the defensive backs and instead focused on the D line. Before we start drafting next time, management really needs to reach consensus on where the emphasis needs to be. New management definitely includes coaching and probably GM. Certainly cleaner that way.
November 20th, 2018 at 3:37 pm
Koetter is stubborn with coaches and players and plays.
November 20th, 2018 at 3:48 pm
All this fluff and stuff about Head Coach Kotter not knowing or helping the Defensive side of the team, have all JBF forgotten how Xoach Gruden worked with the Defense? Oh yeah we had this Defensive coordinator named hmmm what was his name. Oh yeah Monte Kiffin. Did Gruden not know how to be a head coach here in Tampa, because he did not do anything with the Defense. He said so when he was hired. So shall we chang our tune on the Head coach not being any good because he did not direct the Defense.
November 20th, 2018 at 4:28 pm
folks talking about keeping dirk because of the offense needs to wake up!!!!!!…
first dirk is suppose to have a “GOOD TEAM” not just a good offense…and he’s been here 4years now…
secondly, yall want to see a good offense….check out the rams, saints, chiefs, texans…..balanced offenses that can score at will in the 1st and 2nd half….not when they’re down 28-0 at halftime…..
you fans that want to keep dirk are part of the problem……and if/when we get a new GM what makes yall think he’ll want to keep dirk?…because he produces a lot of yards…..GTFOH!!!!!!!!!!!……the new GM will want to bring in his guy….and that guy wont be dirk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FIRE DIRK!!!!!!!!…..HIRE KRIS RICHARD!!!!!!!
#NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!

Lvd and Kwon are both pretenders and need to be cut.. they are both lousy in run defense and are constantly out of position. Secondary needs to be blown up.
November 21st, 2018 at 8:56 am
I love how these Twitter FB analysts are so quick in determining a players future and what they should be doing and who should and should not be playing. If Twitter goes down tomorrow there will be a lot of so-called wanna be analyst out of a job. Do you actually think the players want to lose. No matter how I feel about a player I will never go on social media to talk bad about them.
