“Peyton’s Our Running Down Running Back”

October 20th, 2018

No committee approach

Man, Dirk Koetter loves him some Peyton Barber.

The head coach has so much adoration in his voice when he talks about the undrafted third-year man top his running backs depth chart.

Koetter was at it again on the Buccaneers Radio Network yesterday. A fan asked Koetter about using Ronald Jones as more of his wide runner, stretch plays, etc., and Barber becoming more of the hard-running, north-south guy.

Koetter wagged a finger through the radio, making it clear that Barber needs more carries, not less.

“Peyton’s our running down running back,” Koetter said firmly, explaining that all good running backs want and need more carries.

This echoed previous chatter from Koetter and some of what offensive coordinator Todd Monken said on Wednesday: backs need multiple looks at the same run to be most successful.

Jones fans will have to keep settling for a series a game, maybe two, and a few passes thrown his way.

I actually agree and feel pretty good about Peyton Barber as our featured back. As our run-blocking improves, I think he has proven that he can be very solid for us.

Am I in the minority on that?

  2. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Can you guys tell that I am stuck at work?

Hence, 9 million posts from me this morning.

I promise I will shut the hell up for a while…. here shortly
thanks for putting up with me!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  3. Kobe Faker Says:

“1st down and 2 yards to go and Americas playcaller Klueless Koetter cant design a touchdown”

“All Kobe Faker wants for Christmas is Monken to call plays for JW….

    and then world peace”

    Kobe Faker

  4. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

First we should fix the offensive line to open up holes for the run, then worry about who our running back is

  5. Easy Says:

Barber is solid. Nothing spectacular but a solid running back in all aspects.

  6. Defense Rules Says:

@Kobe … ““All Kobe Faker wants for Christmas is Monken to call plays for JW …. and then world peace.” Good news Kobe … Joe promised to pass that on to Santa for you.

@Joe … “Man, Dirk Koetter loves him some Peyton Barber.” Seems like you could have written the exact same thing last year Joe … EXCEPT substitute the name “Doug Martin” in that sentence in place of Peyton Barber (who gained gobs of experience riding the bench).

  7. NPRSageBoy Says:

    Koetter loved Doug Martin, too.

  8. Pickgrin Says:

ONE big play changes everyone’s perspective (including coaches) about what the Buccaneers running attack should look like.

As soon as ROJO flashes that open field speed and cutting ability that got him drafted #38 overall – just ONCE for a 50+ yd TD (something Barber hasn’t done once in 3 years here) – watch how quickly his game snaps increase and how most every fan’s opinion of Jones goes from “bust” – to – “This guy just needs more snaps – get him the damn ball in space coach…”

  9. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

IT seems like everyone except the experts like to fix the “fancy” stuff before they fix the “root cause of the problem”

  10. Darin Says:

Once again Dirk is a year late to the party. Wish he loved him some Barber last year at this time. Hopefully waiting on year too long on Smitty will pay off this weekend. If so, in a year Dirk will be talking about how he loves him some Duffner and cant remember who mike smith is. Cmon Dirk you’re supposed to get to parties early.

  11. joestang Says:

Koetter loves Barber because he knows Jones sucks and cant play a lick. Jones will never be a all around running back.

  12. LakeLand Says:

Am I the only who think that the Ronald Jones pick should have been spent on OT/OG Connor Williams?

  13. Waterboy Says:

Bucs should’ve given up a 5th round pick to Cleveland for Hyde. He would easily be an upgrade over what they currently have.

  14. LakeLand Says:

    Waterboy

There were a slew of young veteran RBs, CBs the Bucs could have signed in free agency.

  15. Crazed Bucs Fan Says:

I don’t know why y’all love Peyton so much.

  16. Not there yet Says:

Peyton’s our running down running back,”

That’s the kind of idiotic mentality that made it obvious to everyone in the stadium that why Charles sims was in the game. Everyone else has third down change of pace backs, this poor excuse for a coach has passing down backs and running down backs. Another reason the run game is so easy to shut down

You have a wet behind the ears rookie and quizz Rodgers who no one else wants and you can’t say barber is your number one back? Damn I can’t until Koetter is outta here. If he can pass block he’s your guy, Koetter isn’t the guy to get this team over the hump he’s got all these unproven philosophies that haven’t worked and will stick to it no matter what

  17. adam from ny Says:

give the bowling ball 22 carries on sunday

  18. Trench War Says:

I wish Koetter and Monken would give Barber more carries. For one thing it lets the QB take a breath once in a while and brings LB closer to the box. When defenses know that they can make a few plays to squash the run early they know Koetter will give up on the run and they concentrate on coverage. Predictability is Koetter’s achilles heel. Plus, I want Barber to get more touches for selfish reasons too! I gotta a lot of mula riding on him.

  19. Buc believer Says:

Funny how now he loves Barber but he loved Martin last year and couldn’t give a rats arse about Barber.

  20. lambchop Says:

Dirk Koetter loves him some Peyton Barber except when he loved him some Doug Martin and Jaquizz Rodgers. I think most fans could see last year that Peyton had better moves than any RB on this team and it took Koetter until the last couple games to poke his head out of the ground. Player evaluation on this team stinks!

  21. lambchop Says:

    @Buc Believer,

LOL, my same thought man. Didn’t read all the way to the bottom b4 writing my comment. Great minds.

  22. BigMacAttack Says:

Koetter is stupid. Every time Barber gets going, he puts in Quiz or now Jones. I want to see Jones but Barber gets a handful of carries and then Derp puts in the other guys. What’s he saving him for? Work him like a dog and if he lasts two years at least it will be a happy productive time. Every time I think Koetter is starting to figure it out, he does more stupid stuff, like calling time out instead of throwing the challenge flag. Boot this clown already.

  23. Anonymous Says:

Barbers a decent back, but we need more at RB! Swing a trade, raid some practice squads, get some quality depth! Bears might be willing to deal Jordan Howard…..go get him! Not sure that Ronald Jones is right for this club.

  24. JimmyJack Says:

Everybody wants to know why we have no running game. The answer is simple they give Barber 3 carries per quarter. And if you factor out end game situations it’s probably 2 rushes per quarter.

the fact that we have no running game lies fully on the coaches shoulders. You tell me which running back in all of NFL history that could do damage with two carries per quarter and maybe I’ll listen……But of course you won’t because there is none.

  25. JimmyJack Says:

Big Mac I told them to boot this clown last year. I’m still hoping Im wrong BTW……….But noooo, everybody wanted stability and now they have it……..we are now stable and we enter each game unprepared.

  26. Rod Munch Says:

Up the gut on 1st down for 1.2 yards.

    2nd and 9.

    Repeat.

    That’s Dirk’s running game.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

Doug Martin will be the starting RB in Oakland starting next week, he should have the job for about a month. We shall find out if Doug was in fact washed up, or if all you dopes were wrong. I’m guessing all you dopes were wrong, we shall see.

  28. BucEmUp Says:

fix the defense to fix the run game. C ANT run the ball when your always playing from behind.

  29. Trench War Says:

Koetter is loyal to his players to a fault. For Koetter, it’s all about a players journey to get here and once they rise through the ranks on their own merit he stays loyal to them regardless if they begin backsliding. He didn’t quit Martin until he was gone and the same will probably be true for Barber as well.

  30. FortMyersDave Says:

I think Rod Munch is correct. The Browns expect the Bucs to try and exploit their running D and will likely keep Barber to something like 12 carries and 26 or yards if Dirk commits to the predictable tendency. Why not try a couple of deep balls on first down to shake things up? Fitz would probably connect with DJax for a TD that way but not sure if Jameis can do this as well as he simply has not developed chemistry with Jackson…. However, he has chemistry with Brate but the Browns know that too…. Anyhow, with so many weapons at his dispense our QB should be able to exploit Cleveland if he can avoid the idiotic play. Hopefully the Bucs win in a 34-30 shootout (5 TD’s, one missed extra point w/o Koetter chasing the 2 pointer if the Bucs grab the lead)……

BTW Trench War I agree with you on the loyalty factor with Coach Koetter and mit is obviously not only true concerning players who need to be benched or released but also coaching staff which unfortunately probably has cost the Bucs one or 2 wins this season not to mention 3 or 4 games last season at a minimum!
