Deeper Issues On Defense?

October 16th, 2018

Sounds off on defense.

Joe is confident you watched Booger McFarland give his two cents into the firing yesterday of Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith. But there was something Booger said that got Joe’s attention.

Booger, who is connected with those behind the curtain at One Buc Palace, suggested there was a deeper issue with the Bucs than just a defensive coordinator. (Notice Bucs coach Dirk Koetter basically said the same thing?)

Well, to add fuel to this mystery, no less than Warren Sapp pulled the curtain back. As we all know, Sapp is tight with Gerald McCoy. We also know Sapp is no stranger to One Buc Palace. Often, you don’t see Sapp at One Buc Palace — but you hear him.

A Bucs fan was outraged that a defense that was scalded so badly in the first half would have the nerve to dance after making a third down stop in the second half, as if they just won a playoff game.

This fan sent Sapp a Twitter and take a look at Sapp’s reply.

@WarrenSapp: Those kids (Defense) give up 33+ points a Week #LikesViewsAndFollowers all they care about! #SappOnSunday

This, on top of what Booger said and last week what Koetter said, sure adds a lot of intrigue.

Could it be the Bucs have too many guys on defense just happy to cash checks?

Hmm I wonder what player has been doing this for the last 6 years now…

  2. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

when your highest paid defender cares more about playing with dolls than being great and winning this is the type of defense you have for a decade. soft, weak and embarrassing. cancer93 has been the main issue for this franchise and will continue to be until he is ran out of town.

  3. gman Says:

If they hold Cleveland to under 20 then the overreaction will be so predictable. People will think that getting rid of Mike Smith will have cured all that is ill.

The true test will be the following week at Cincy. JPP is the only one showing up each week….not a surprise.

  4. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

Sapp one of only two true stars to dress for the bucs needs to be back on TV… TV is better with Sapp. plus sapp has not run into any trouble lately nor run any businesses into the ground so why not another chance.

  5. Dooshlarue Says:

    Just might be right.

Who cares if they danced on the sideline a little after a couple stops. Not dancing waasn’t getting them anywhere.

  7. doolnutts Says:

Also what JPP said about it all… I have always been a McCoy supporter and I have always loved Kwon. BUT we have been through how many coaching changes and continue to get the same results? McCoy is getting how much a year and for what?

I am NOT debating their skill sets. There is no doubt McCoy is one of our best DT’s of all time… But that defense is WAY TOO TALENTED to be this bad. Even with Mike Smith calling plays there is no way these guys should be this soft.

What is worse about the dancing is we ultimately LOST THE GAME. So I have no idea what we are celebrating about… Usually, people who celebrate mediocrity in a job that requires you to produce get fired.

  8. Dooshlarue Says:

    It’s a mindset issue theodore.

  9. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Several times, during games, I have watched the defensive line quit.
IMHO, it is gonna take a hard core hard azz coach, to turn us around.

  10. Trench War Says:

Maybe it’s just me that I’m noticing with the new offensive rules in place most defensive players league wide are just going through the motions and cashing checks. It’s like they have given up trying to stop offenses that have a huge advantage.

  11. LakeLand Says:

They can’t dance after sacking the QB like Mark Gastineau
Because they can’t get near the QB

So why not dance after stopping a team on 3rd down

  12. pelbuc Says:

JBF, sadly you raise this same issue every year. Sometimes they’re called loafers and other time just cashing checks. It’s ironic. the guy who supposedly confronted Baker last year for an off sides penalty that resulted in a TD is the same guy who danced with the idiot who had 2 crucial penalties on Sunday that resulted in TDs. Get rid of the “have fun” crowd and give us fans players that take pride in what they do. Start by getting rid of GMC and Kwon.

  13. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

what you idiots call talent with mccoy is really a great first step to nowhere…. there is more to being a winner than just talent. he has proven to have no heart nor desire to be great. he is simply a me first, injury prone, camera hound who embarrasses real men every single day while sucking the life out of fellow competitors… he is like a sleeper agent in batman underoos, just destroying the internal workings of an organization that is void of leadership. a true parasite.

  14. Eric Says:

These guys work their butts off to get into the NFL and make the big money, then just give up?

    I don’t buy it.

  15. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

LakeLand says: “They can’t dance after sacking the QB like Mark Gastineau
Because they can’t get near the QB —- so why not dance after stopping a team on 3rd down?”

LMAO!!!!! THAT… is a good one, man. Nicely done!

  16. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

LVD was soo frigging good when schiano was here as was GMC, LVD was well on his way to being an elite LB in this league, then you sign Revis for some dumb reason and then the QB with allergies and the MRSA, and its all down hill, the bucs esp GMC & LVD needed someone up in their grill to get rid of that dancing and happy to cash checks bs, but sadly their playing days at elite level is gone but not the ice cream nor the losing

  17. Lamarcus Says:

You should just GMC first few plays….. I always crown Grimes the loafer of the week…. But this GMC wins by a long shot. He loafed the entire game

  18. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    Dusthty Rhothdes

maybe the crying clown and his overrated sidekick are regretting whinning about how tough schiano was now…. classic case of be careful what you ask for…. both are heartless career losers and the team will be much better off when the three board members of the losing culture are gone. cancer93, lvd and dotson.

but he smiled while loafing and went to church so rational standards do not apply to him. you are allowed to be a fraud if you smile and hit the chapel…

  20. Eric Says:

Duffner had one shot at DC in Cinci back in early 2000’s

Defenses were just as bad as the current buc’s squad. Or pretty darn close.

  21. NJBucsFan Says:

This team (players) is extremely active on Instagram and Twitter. It has been bother me seeing pictures and stories being posted of players prior to the game.

  22. J dubb Says:

Time for a culture change on d…..let go of Grimes, McCoy, and Alexander in the off season….vea, beckwith and the rooks take over, and let jpp become the vocal and spiritual leader of this defense. Let him teach all our young guys how to be professionals and hold them accountable.

  23. Bucsfanman Says:

Every year we talk about getting more “dawg” football players. Every year! How about this instead, lets get some GOOD football players, guys that don’t need coaches to keep them in line. JPP comes to mind.

  24. VA BUC Says:

This is how our defense can fix itself in season and off season: Trade Mccoy release Urein, Smith, and Spence. Do not sign Grimes or Alexander back to the team (sorry Kwon is just not doing it ) sign a saftey opposite Evans sign or trade for a young up and coming corner.

Draft: 1st rd DT(3tech) or DE or MLB
2 nd rd DE or MLB or Saftey
3 rd rd Saftey or Corner or RT

it’s really quit simple. every year you defend the soft locker room cancer yet every year he sucks the dawg, life and will to win from everyone he comes into contact with. draft picks, free agents, coaches, parking lot attendants, homeless intersection window washers will all be better off when the crying clown is gone.

  26. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “This, on top of what Booger said and last week what Koetter said, sure adds a lot of intrigue.” Somehow Joe, ‘Bucs’ defense’ and the word ‘intrigue’ just don’t go together. Not much intrigue there at all … they really are bad. I did get tickled by the headline “Deeper Issues on Defense?” … posed as a question no less. You mean firing Scapegoat Smitty isn’t going to make us the #1 NFL defense? Now I miss him. He never whined about the players … Smitty was the perfect fall-guy. Now he’s gone.

Oh wait, now Bucs ‘fans’ can turn on the players. Let’s start with GMC (he only played 60% of the game, and got shut out). And then we can move to Beau Allen maybe (he played almost two-thirds of the game & only had 1 tackle himself). Kwon, then LVD, and maybe Grimes after that? Oooh, Ryan Smith, he’s a good candidate. But let’s stay away from all the rookies & near-rookies; they’ll come around, eventually, now that Mike Smith’s gone.

Yea I think most of you owe some of us an apology ijs.

My question is what took you guys sooooo long to see McIceCream for what he really is?

And we’re right about Jameis too, you’ll finally realize it in about 3 years. Smh.

  28. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    VA BUC

the cryin clown has ZERO trade value. his greatness only exists in low standard bucfan’s mind…. no gm is going to give up anything for an over the hill, overrated, always injured, soft player with a history of quitting on coaches. he brings nothing to the table. the first step to nowhere and not a single meaningful win or signature game in his entire career (a decade) does not get too many gm’s mouthwatering to throw away valuable picks. the clown is a legend of value only in low standard buc fan’s mind simple as that. Now, he is a perfect candidate for the bucs ring of underachievement where mediocrity is rewarded as greatness.

all that being said, Bucs could probably get a second rounder out of Gruden….. McCoy is a perfect piece to help Gruden continue the destruction of the Raiders organization.

  29. Cobraboy Says:

I would put Beckwith at MLB when he comes back and move Alexander to Sam. Alexander won’t be on the field as much for his clown show.

Alexander needs to shut his pie hole, stop the chest-thumping and just play. No more bad pursuit angles, overrun misses, getting snookered on QB fakes and missed tackles.

Not only is the performance of this defense the worst in Bucs history, but their personal behavior is also embarrassing.

That sideline display in Atlanta after FINALLY a third down stop made my heart grow deathly cold on this defense. I am glad somebody in Buc management ordered Smith be given an apple and roadmap, because HE is responsible for this embarrassing mess.

I hold no great hopes that the D will improve under Duffner, but I do hope the behavior and attitude improves, and the defense is more aggressive. I’d rather lose getting aggressive than lose in marshmallow zones.

  30. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

VA Buc, i like the draft preview but ol jason gump who is so lost could have seen that in the 2019 draft loaded with DL maybe he goes and grabs a safety that was needed or an OT for that putrid right side but he drafts a DT for a 3-4 team after he signs 4DL in off-season

  31. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    Defense Rules

your delusional defense of the undefendable defensive coaches, players and overall level of reality make my McCoy rants seem civil, rational and eloquent.

dude the defense sucks…. period… accept it… the players suck led by mccoy and the overrated lvd….. accept it…

bucs are embarrassing top to bottom from the senior most glazer to the dude changing toilet paper…. no clue what they are doing none of them.

so instead of living in denial and trying to make excuses for the inexcusable, I recommend that you hit the local walmart for some poster board and markers… make up some dumbarse proster signs they all are dumb after all… start patroling one buc circus tent…. i am sure with all the pansy arse optimists living in denial on this site you can come up with some good PC buzzwords for your signage…

  32. Frank Pillow Says:

It was absolutely humiliating to see our supposed leaders on Defense dancing around and laughing like they had been dominating the entire game. Accountability has been lacking for nearly a decade. Apparently pride went out the window too. Not a single one of those guys has made a meaningful play in a very long time. Not a single one of those guys can hold anyone up to a standard of excellence. Not a single one has every truly earned the right to lead. Most have spent the better part of their time here a sacking more coaches than opposing QBs. What’s there to dance about when you can’t cover, take terrible angles, get eaten up in the run game and make EVERY opposing QB look like Dan Marino circa 1984?

  33. D-Rome Says:

The people who predicted 11-5 and/or a playoff berth are noticeably silent.

  34. bradinator Says:

Don’t know what everyone is crying about, GMC is just as good in coverage as Grimes, Stewart, and Smith are. Completely unprepared. They aren’t even in the TV picture when some of the catches are made. Blitz scheme is a joke. “run straight ahead” is NOT a scheme!! Need someone, anyone really, to chew these guys out on the field when they blow a coverage. We stunk on D until Hardy Nickerson arrived for us. those guys were scared to go back to the huddle if they blew an assignment. Lookin’ at you Kwon, Lavonte, JPP, MCCoy. No accountability at all from their peers.

  35. JabooBuc Says:

Joe, any idea on where the coaches were while these guys were dancing on the sideline? Did Buckner or Duffner see this and if so, kind of curious if they said anything. I don’t think it’s a huge deal but it is a bit of indicator as to where there heads are at. It’s definitely a losers mentality.

They should post this in the locker room: Dancing is for Winners!

  36. JJV Says:

Like Jack Nickleson’s Joker said ” this team needs an enema”. Nothing but a total complete clean out will change anything. No one should be considered irreplaceable or safe from players, coaches, front office, trainers. Even the owners should consider selling. Change the uniforms. Give it a total make over. If it takes years so be it. It beats continuing like this year after year.

  37. Deborah Hall Says:

To all the comments with Grimes, obviously you don’t have a life, so for me his mother have a Blessed day.🤔

  38. Resurrection of Fitz Says:

They were not in a -33 points reality. Smh

    Koetter should fine them.

  39. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Deborah sorry and all due respect your son had a good career as an NFL starter and got 8 million from licht this year, but it is obvious the time has come to move to life after football and again he got 8 MILLION to be on an NFL team, not to shabby

  40. jjbucfan Says:

I think the veterans knew they couldn’t win with that defense so they chose self-preservation. I hope they are rejuvenated by this firing. It shows accountability and if they change the scheme, we could see a whole new team. If Duffner is Mike Smith 2.0 but blitzes a few more times, we are dead meat and you will see a whole new staff. Buckner was the pick in my eyes, young, energetic, in your face. Tough for these players to respect a coach that has never played at this level. Buckner has walked the walk. Sick of these old guys keep getting these jobs with their 20 year old ideas. Look at these young gun coaches and the success they are having… not the Bucs though, UGH!!

  41. adam from ny Says:

you think things are bad here???…look what the little chuckaneer has done to oakland…he is quickly turning oakland into chokeland…be glad the little chuckaneer did not make his return to tampa after his halftime ring of honor shenannies

  43. Sunday_44 Says:

I think it’s curious that everyone is calling for the Glazers to sell.

We might be close to losing our NFL team in Tampa this organization sucks sooooo bad.

I hear St Louis is looking for a New Team.

If the Glazers do sell, I hope Tampa gets to keep the team.

  44. Sunday_44 Says:

    @ Deborah
I’m guessing that if we come on here and call Grimes the best CB this team has ever had we don’t have a life either?

If I could post pictures of Grimes getting beat way too often I would.

Saying he has lost a step and needs to go is a reality of the NFL and sadly, Brent’s time has come.

Of course you would fit perfectly with this organization because your comments are sentimental and the whole coaching staff would rather have a good friend or Somebody’s Son instead of who we need from the standpoint of Business in Mind!!

  45. Lord Cornelius Says:

The defense is on Licht as much as anyone. He’s been 5X the drafter of Dominic; but that isn’t saying much.

Even if it’s an attitude/culture thing – that’s on him to identify. That’s on coaches.

But all I can say is this:

Through 4 different head coaches and multiple coordinators and sh1t loads of personnel changes; Gerald McCoy has NEVER been a part of any sort of “good” defense.

The best defense we’ve had in that stretch imo was 2016. Happens to be the year Spence was our best DE. God I was so dumb for having hope in that guy apparently due to him racking up more pressure than anyone as a rookie. You sure got me Kobe Faker! We really need Sterling SHepard on this team (the guy he said would be an all pro #1 WR that we had to draft in 2016).

2010 was a fluke trash year where we faced historically like the weakest schedule in the last 20 years of Bucs schedules. We faced so many bottom 5 offenses and it was proven to be a fluke the next year.

McCoy is literally the only consistent variable in all these years of sucking bad on defense. He has been a part of MANY bottom 3-5 defenses. Not sure if that’s fair to him but it’s true.

  48. Darin Says:

Pretty sure Booger meant Dirks the issue. To me he just isnt a head coach. He doesnt have his team prepared, hardly ever. I dont see this team making tbe playoffs with him here but as sure as hell will root for him to. It was obvious to me after he quit in Arizona 3rd week last year before halftime that he had to go. He just wasnt the right choice. I hope the Glazers do their research next time. There are McVays and Pedersons out there ready for the chance. We need a coach to steal a few wins here n there rather than give away easy ones half the year.

I refused to believe it until I heard McIcecream on Monday nights Micd’up segment, fall all over himself apologizing to Big Ben (6’5 240 listed, sure it’s 15-20 pounds more) Rothlisberger when he knocked him down accidentally on a play. Sickening. Soft. Weak. It is that approach that hurts this team.

People talk about Jensen bringing the nasty to the O-line or like Mankins did but where is the nasty on the D-line? Who? Who is the enforcer on this defense? Back in the day we all knew Sapp set the tone, where is that today? Who sets the tone?

  50. Bucsfanman Says:

RiaB- I can’t root against the guy because he’s a Buc. I said that this was his “prove it” year just as I said it for Jameis. 11 games left.
So far so good, with Jameis.
GMC? Remains to be seen, but I don’t like what I’ve seen so far.

I never recall Brooks, Nickerson, Sapp, Lynch etc. dancing on the sideline or celebrating while losing a game.

It starts with coaching, accountability, respect. ALL lacking on this unit.

  52. SOFT Says:

Even Grime’s mom is on here calling fans out about talking about her son. This team is soft as f**k. Oh and btw, the steelers, bears, and falcons all made your son look like a chump, Deborah.

  53. unbelievable Says:

The problem is we still don’t have a leader on defense. And we have not, for quite some time.

GMC is a good DT but he’s not a leader. We’ve known this for some time. LVD might be the most mentally weak linebacker I’ve ever seen- he’s def not a leader. Kwon has the fire and vocal nature to be a leader, but he’s simply not good enough at playing right now to be THE leader. JPP just got here, it ain’t on him.

I said this last year- you need your leader (or one of the leaders) on each side of the ball to be someone who plays in the trenches if you want to have a tough team.

Until that happens… well, we’ve seen those results…

  54. unbelievable Says:

    Testing

  55. Eric Says:

The Glazer Boy’s ROI every year for the bucs is phenomenal.

The beauty is it doesn’t even matter how many people show up for the games.

  56. Rod Munch Says:

So is Brooks going to be the new GM next year? I don’t know if he’d be any good or not, and I’d have someone there to help with contracts, but the good will that getting Brooks officially involved with the team again would be a huge boon for the organisation since it would buy them at least a year or two of goodwill. Then, if I’m Brooks, I’m getting Sapp involved, coming in and beating people up, laying the smack down on the guys like Sapp laid the smackdown on The Rock when he took his starting DT position away from him in college.

  57. Mike Johnson Says:

I’ve never been high on Kwon or David. They just don’t have that..IT factor on the field of play. Who is the leader or leaders on this Defense? Sapp and Brooks use to challenge other Buc players to make plays on Defense. The only 100%er
I see out there is JPP on D. Its like once you get pass our front 4, anything goes!
Lets see if our new D coordinator can liven things up a bit..with some different schemes and blitzes.

  58. Rod Munch Says:

I said this the other day, but this is a generational issue. Millennials need someone constantly patting them on the back, telling them they’re special, telling them that they’re the best, and so if they do something good for once they dance and celebrate because they don’t know what else to do, in particular since all the non-Generation Glee’ers have been telling them they’re awful. So they dance and jump around all excited wanting high fives for not screwing up for once.

Now on teams where you have a real head coach you don’t see this because the head coach wouldn’t allow it, but Dirk isn’t a real head coach, he’s an offensive coordinator (and a good one when that’s all he is doing) who is in way over his head.

  59. c-spann Says:

In the offseason we need to let Kwon and McCoy go. Kwon gets swallowed up on run plays and McCoy never really shows up like Donald, Cox, or Atkins but gets paid like it. Also, I heard that McCoy acts like a little pitch behind the scenes

  60. unbelievable Says:

My only hope is that this film absolutely embarrasses these guys. Maybe the other players will take notice. Maybe this is the tipping point.
    Maybe.

the team, coaches and players you refer to are a complete and total embarrassment to sports and mankind… maybe if they did not shat themselves every damn week they would earn some respect… 16 years without a meaningful win is not a slump it’s incompetence. your optimism is purely delusional.

  70. Rod Munch Says:

Look at all these triggered morons who not only hate GMC, they hate Winston and hate Sapp. Basically they need everyone to be a completely bland dullard who just quotes from the coaches handbook and never says or does anything that is outside of the very specific square they peg for people. This is what you get when extremely boring people run their mouth and share their extremely boring opinions on things.

  71. BigHogHaynes Says:

  72. Rod Munch Says:

Anyone notice Vita Vea’s stats so far this year, best I can pull up he has 1 sack, 0 QB pressures, 0 QB hits.

If someone has some different numbers on pressures let me know, it’s not a standard number.

Anywho while it sounds like I’m bashing the kid, I’m not, it’s more about how the team drafted a guy who doesn’t fit the scheme and magically thought they could take a 3-4 run stuffing NT and make him an inside rushing 4-3 DT, and even more hilarious was the morons who compared him to Sapp when his entire college production didn’t match what Sapp did in just one year in college, they’re completely different players.

Anyways if they truly think Vita is that special then next year you move to a 3-4 and build around him, and frankly that’s the best use of David since he’s the best edge rusher on the team and he’d have a monster year in that defense.

I would like to see that!

  74. stvcl Says:

That weenie @geraldini is not the answer. 4 tackles and 1 1/2 sacks this season. Surely we can draft some schlub at a substantial savings that will be able to put up those kind of numbers.

  75. Bucnjim Says:

It’s not hate for McCoy it is outrage! Zero stats in a close game where any type of play could have given the offense at least more time. These defensive guys remind me of one of my own employees that are constantly late. Pretty good employee but if he’s on time two days in a row he’s looking for a pat on the back. I remind him there are over 150 million people every day of the week that ARE on time but he continues to think he is doing something special.

  76. Bucsfanman Says:

RiaB – Don’t short me on that Jameson bro! I’ll need it if I have to listen to you all offseason! Lol!🍻

  77. Dooshlarue Says:

    Don’t make me laugh McSoftieSwirl93.

Insert rap song and fade out….
    Scary stuff!

  78. JabooBuc Says:

Reality – you want your coaches to be leaders of men, not scumbags. In general, players look up to their coaches. Go back and name me all the major scumbags that have been good coaches over time. I’ll wait…

  79. Mike Says:

I was so pissed when we couldn’t draft Suh, rather than McCoy. But he was up as a free agent twice now. He steps on people rather than picking them up.
This organization is full of ice cream pansies.

    Trade for Burfict.

  80. Clarence Says:

Smdh at the guy who said football players are entertainers not role models for kids. Who’s on the posters that hang on your football-obsessed kids wall? It sure as heck ain’t a poster of a teacher lmao

  81. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    JabooBuc

[That’s a bit over the top, even for your tirades. — Joe]

  82. rrsrq Says:

Trade for Peterson, restructure GMCs contact and Mitch and LVD

  83. Rod Munch Says:

Dooshlarue – Bosa will probably go first overall, and regardless of what the doom and gloomers say the Bucs aren’t drafting 1st overall.

  84. westernbuc Says:

We are better with McCoy, but he isn’t playing up to his contract and he’s not a leader. His apology to Roethlisberger, his dancing with Kwon 8 points down, smiling with Brees…there’s a pattern. If we cut him next year, I won’t be mad

  85. Dashriprock Says:

Justin darkness needs to go. His judgement of talent is zero.VV will be gone after next year.

  86. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    Joe,

[Just to help you out, it’s best not even to touch those two subjects. It’s a lose/lose effort. — Joe] But that’s the world we live. Feelings matter reality does not

  87. Ghingus Kwon Says:

JPP kind of said the same thing in a roundabout way when he said “even I can be gotten rid of”. Kind of insinuating that others don’t think they can
