Deion Sanders: College Jameis On Display

October 30th, 2018

A man who joins Jameis Winston on the list of Florida State football legends said yesterday he believes America’s Quarterback is a turnover machine who the Bucs will move on from after this season — but not before he wagged a finger of shame at Dirk Koetter.

Joe is talking about the Deion Sanders, who has long been a fan of Jameis and especially his work as a two-sport college player.

(Joe knows many young people don’t realize Sanders, a Hall of Fame cornerback, also played nine seasons of Major League Baseball and batted over .500 in the 1992 World Series.)

Sanders was guest host of The Rich Eisen Show and weighed in on the Jameis benching and Ryan Fitzpatrick starting next week.

“First of all, why you let him in long enough to throw four picks? You should have took him out at two,” Sanders barked about Jameis’ bad day.

Sanders emphasized that Fitzpatrick is the “best relief pitcher in this game,” perhaps in NFL history, and he should have played sooner against the Bengals.

As for the remainder of this season, Sanders said of Fitzpatrick, “you can’t let him start long” because his inevitable erratic play will return.

Jameis Winston will get another opportunity this season, Sanders believes, though the Bucs will move on from him after 2018.

“He threw a lot of picks in college. It’s kind of hard to throw a lot of picks in college, especially when there’s a guy in Alabama that hadn’t thrown one, you know what I’m saying? So usually who you are in college kind of stays with you in some form or fashion,” Sanders said of Jameis. “And that’s what it is, and that’s what it is right now. Unfortunately, that’s who Jameis is at this point in his career. That was horrible what you just saw on your screen. It was horrible.

“It’s just bad decision-making. I’m not going to say he’s not prepared because I’m pretty sure he prepares well. But when pressure’s on, the decisions he make, and it seems like he’s always under pressure, and it seems like they don’t even call the same plays for him that they do for Fitzpatrick (laughs). Because when Fitzpatrick gets in it seems like everything works.”

Man, there aren’t many lifeboats out there for Jameis in the national media, even from those who have been his staunch supporters.

The only life boat comes from the curators of this site

  2. Bucamania Says:

    This sums it up perfectly:

“… and it seems like they don’t even call the same plays for him that they do for Fitzpatrick (laughs). Because when Fitzpatrick gets in it seems like everything works.”

  3. LakeLand Says:

It’s looking bad for the Bucs young core

    They had so much promise

    Now it’s only an mirage

  4. Mike Johnson Says:

    Fire Koetter after this season.

  5. Lamarcus Says:

I’ll be his lifeboat….. If he even needs one

  6. LakeLand Says:

Who will be held ” Accountable” for this failure”

The GM or the Coaching staff?

Did the GM draft the right players?
Can the coaching staff develop players?
I see a lot of ” wasted” high draft picks on this team
Some has already been shown the door

  7. stpetebucsfan Says:

Well that’s a confidence builder eh? You bring your college experience and background to the NFL?

So far Deion is spot on. There are the ints and the fumbles and the mind numbing decisions…all clearly visible at FSU long before Jameis became a Buc.

What else did we see at FSU…well Jimbo had to suspend him…they had sideline disagreements and on national TV Jimbo had to make Jameis sit down and STFU!!!

Why would we be surprised then that a man selfish enough to get suspended three games for brain dead behavior…a man who ignored his coaches on more than one occasion…so selfish that he force the ball to a teammate for PERSONAL records…

I apologize for piling on but I’ve given in on the Jameis debates since the draft. EVERYTHING I hoped for is in tatters….I was right the first time and wrong in all my decisions until Sunday afternoon after that Bengals game. I finally get it.

Jameis is a scorpion…he does what he does because that’s who he is!

“When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” Maya Angelou

  8. Conte Piscatelli Says:

He isn’t wrong, it is like all the plays they call for Fitz work. Likely because Fitz makes the right read, gets the ball out on rhythm, oh and I really think the O line plays harder for Fitz.

  9. Greg Says:

Blaming Koetter is hilarious! All they have done is support Jameis. We ignored the defense up until this last off season. Evans was re-signed, Jackson, drafted OJ Howard when we already had Brate who we then re-signed. Drafted Godwin when we were loaded at receiver. Fired Lovie so we could keep Koetter and develop Jameis. Unbelievable!

You can coach until your blue in the face but sometimes the students just a moron on gameday! or at a club, or in an uber.

  10. Ray Rice Says:

“They don’t call the same plays for Jameis as they do for Fitzpatrick.” LMFAO

  11. D-Rome Says:

“First of all, why you let him in long enough to throw four picks? You should have took him out at two,” Sanders barked about Jameis’ bad day.

If Koetter takes him out at two picks then everyone will be criticizing him saying he gave Jay-Miss an early hook. Koetter’s decision was the correct one at the right time.

Furthermore, I don’t believe Fitzpatrick would be the starter if he didn’t march down the field several times to tie the game. Fitz showed that Jay-Miss is the problem and he has no one else to blame but himself.

  12. BucThis Says:

The coaching staff failed to develop Young defensive players what makes us think this lame coaching staff can actually develop a quarterback?

I hope Dirk and Monken get the Hue Jackson and Todd Haley treatment.

    Fxcking scrubs.

  13. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Tank for Tua, and go get Saban as the GM/coach if he wants….and eric bienemy would be a 2nd choice as the HC of the bucs with a really good president/gm and these ex players on many of these networks do not do any HW to be able to say what is going on in places like Tampa, so their word means squat aside in this situation with deion being a seminole and invested in jamesi for several years now

  14. Greg Says:

I actually agree with Joes article yesterday (Yes I said that). I think being suspended and watching Fitzmagic have incredible success, fan support, and nationally loved on NFL network, made Jameis feel he had to be spectacular to win back the love.

The only mistake Koetter may have made ( I say may because Im sure ownership and GM had an influence). Is starting Jameis when Fitz had a bad quarter aginst a great defense. Maybe should have waited until Fitz actually had a bad game… you know, like 4 ints. Then the fans would want Jameis back.

  15. LakeLand Says:

If it’s not Dirk Koetter fault

Then it’s the “Idiot” GM fault
For drafting him with the #1 overall pick

  16. LakeLand Says:

Someone has to be held ” Accountable” for these draft BUSTS

  17. LakeLand Says:

    Remember ACCOUNTABILITY ?????

  18. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

I never really understand why Jason Licht gets ripped for drafting Jameis. — What was the alternative? Marcus Mariota? — YUCK.

If Jameis does not work out here, then sadly it just will not. But he will have 5 times the career that Mariota will have, when it’s all said and done.

  19. asdf Says:

@ Bucamania. Exactly. It’s crazy how dangerous the offense feels with even Fitz who we know isn’t that good.

The one variable is Jameis….It’s obvious

  20. LakeLand Says:

    It’s not just Jameis

Take a close look at Licht draft history and get back to me

  21. Dooshlarue Says:

Man……. FSU be havin a skrong Language department.

  22. Calbucsfan Says:

Fact of the matter is, other than the Bucs weapons on offense, this team still has a whole lot of holes to fill. Both lines are suspect, the running game is putrid, and the D-backs are either too far off to cover or too slow to keep up. Add the turn-over machine (Winston) to the list, and it will take several drafts, multiple trades, and a slew of free agent signings to turn this team around, regardless of who’s calling the shots. So be it, us true Bucs fans must vent but aren’t going anywhere!

So the only question that REALLY matters is, do you make those who ARE calling the shots walk the plank, bring in new people, and literally start the process all over again, or do you go with what you have and build from there?

I’ve been a Bucs fan since the NFL awarded the city the team and quite frankly am tired of “starting over”. Yes, it’s very frustrating to go in to a season with hopes and have them crushed yet again, but I for one DO NOT want to see the front office get fired and start from scratch again. Insanity IS doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Firing the front office and starting over is what this team’s owners have done over and over since 1976 and what has that got us over 40+ years? Other than less than one decade of contending, nothing but losses!!! STOP IT!!! Suck it up, roll up your sleeves front office, stop listening to the press and disappointed fans and get the job done and start winning!

  23. LakeLand Says:

Mike Evans is the only player left from the 2014 draft

Ali Marpet and Donovan Smith are the only players
From the 2015 draft starting against the Panthers

No player from the 2016 draft will be starting against the Panthers

2 players from the 2017 draft will be starting ( 3 will be playing)

    The 2018 draft is underforming

  24. Steve@Tattoobowling Says:

It would appear to everyone not from Florida that Jameis is being the same guy that he was in college minus his freshman year.

Think about that for a second….if it wasnt for his freshman year in college we wouldnt be talking about this because we would never had drafted him.

I HOPE he can change….but realistically, who really believes he can correct his flaws?

  25. LakeLand Says:

    If Jason Licht was GM
For any team other than the ” Pathetic” Bucs

He wouldn’t have survived one draft

  26. miken Says:

deion say” who you are in college kindaof stays with you in some form” Threw lots of picksin college and yep… that hasn’t changed. Ironic that he was suspended a 1/2 game in college for yelling “grab her in the …..”, then suspended in the pros for actually doing it. The whole eating w’s thing kinda was the end. You had a bunch of pros watching him wondering what this pop warner routine was and now his teamates are like, yeah, give me #14 this is for grown ups.

  27. NJBucsFan Says:

and on another segment Sanders said that the Bucs call different plays for Fitz than they do for wINsTon….he was laughed at by the other former professional athletes on the segment. Then questioned how FSU did on Saturday.

Sanders is only throwing shade because of the Noles connection.

  28. Hawk Says:

Mariota was only *one* of the alternatives (In hindsight, a bad one). IMHO, the better alternative was to trade down and use the extra picks for defense. Dilfer, B. Johnson, etc, have proven that you don’t need anything more than ‘average’ at QB to win the Super Bowl *IF* you have a great defense. *Every* playoff game the Bucs have ever been in, is because of their defense. *THAT* is what Licht & Co should have been building.

  29. Duke Silver Says:

Say bye to the GM before Koetter. We do not need another head coach carousel. I do not see the players throwing Coach K under the bus, and I do not think he has lost the locker room. Get him some help!

  30. TOM Says:

I also believe Licht should be the first to go. Well, maybe the Glazers if they would sell the team. First player to go Winston & go from there.

  31. Jmarkbuc Says:

    D Rome

Prime is right, he shoulda been pulled after the second INT..Defense Rules and I both commented at the same time…He was lost, wild eyed with no composure.

If Fitz had gone in then, and the D played like it did in the second half, we would have won going away…

  32. Greg Says:

Duke Silver your absolutely right! Koetter did not want Jameis, did not want to do Hard knocks, did not draft a kicker in the second round, did not go 0-3 at drafting running backs. Our best lineman is out of division 3 football because I guess the SEC or BIG 10 had nothing to offer, has not drafted one pass rusher worth a crap since hes been here, drafts a fat guy to stop the run AFTER bringing in 3 free agents who already specialize in it. Seriously who worries about the run? Most running backs are used as receivers.

Koetter deserves an extension IF the team wins a few games, minimizes penalties, and doesnt quit.

  33. Phil Says:

I hadn’t thought of that but Jameis could move on from football and play baseball. Less stress and better money, longer career. Maybe the Rays can sign him.

  34. Mike in MO Says:

I agree Tom that Licht should be the first to go, followed closely with Winston. Then hire another GM and let him decide what to do with Koetter and Monken. I would prefer to keep Koetter and Monken as long as Licht is gone. Licht’s drafting and free-agent signings (for the most parts) have become a liability to this team. Licht has his hits, but his misses overwhelm the good he’s done.

  35. PensacolaBUC Says:

Jameis Winston did throw a lot of Picks in college but he had a nationally ranked defense to get him out of trouble. I agree the his days are numbered but I would hate to see him shine in another system like Denver or New York…

  36. ndog Says:

This organization is a joke, no wonder we suck every year. Top down they have no idea what they are doing, they don’t support their players (Jamies all that year while injured and when dealing with the Djax/loafer situation), they don’t punish their players (Martin, Swaggy), they reward loafing (Grimes), they keep useless coaches on for no good reason (M. Smith), they don’t adjust to their talent (Everything!!!), the just frankly have no idea what they are doing and it is disgusting.

  37. 813bucboi Says:

dirk deserves to get fired because he couldn’t develop Winston…..licht will get fired because dirk and his staff couldn’t develop players he drafted…..simple as that….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  38. ndog Says:

Just for one minute imagine Jameis right now and how he feels as a person.

I tell you if he does have it in him and he leaves here to go to a real organization (The Patriots) he is going to want to absolutely destroy this team if we ever play against him.

  39. i like gunslingers Says:

damn man leave the coaching alone build up your trenches next season and db’s play fitz and then go out and do whatever it takes to get tua under contract, beg borrow or steal make it happen, he’ll come in fitz will teach him and wala there ya go

“Because when Fitzpatrick gets in it seems like everything works.” – That’s all you need to know.

  41. __TGH__ Says:

    Time to get creative…

Deion is on the right track. Fitz is the best reliever ever. Coming off the bench like he did last game… he could do that again, so here’s the deal.

Jameis starts every game. After his second turnover (whenever that may be) Fitz comes in to finish it up.

  42. Destinjohnny Says:

Philly offered us 3 first round picks to trade up for Mariota wow

  43. Schlomiebarmitzvahcircumscissorstein Says:

I’m sure Jameius feels great. He laughs all the way to the bank.

  44. stpetebucsfan Says:

Can we stop gripping about life after Jameis. Remember it was just a few years back that Joe was gripping because we didn’t get Manziel…where oh where will we get a franchise QB?

Lo and behold along comes Jameis…there are other Jameises out there. PLENTY of options remain.

A question for all. Would you rather reach the SB and win with Brad Johnson or have Dan Marino and NOT. Who would have picked Brad over Marino? There is more than one way to win!!

BTW can you guys answer this for me. How many more wins would we have over the past decade with ONE simple difference.
What if Adam Vinatieri perhaps the GOAT of kickers on our team. Seriously if we had the best kicker ever for all of these years what change would that have made in our record.

    Find a damn kicker!!!

  45. Joe Says:

“Sure, just like once upon a time you use a tight-knit frontal assault and launch it into the middle of your enemy’s front lines. It can work.”

Last game was throw straight at a Bengals linebacker with no Buc player …near.

I never really understand why Jason Licht gets ripped for drafting Jameis.
    ______________________________
exactly ..especially when a vast majority of all the so-called football geniuses told the Bucs that Jameis was a sure fire bet and it would be crazy to not draft him. We were sold a bill of goods by the national media and now they’ve all cut and run while the Bucs are in a serious quandary.

  50. miken Says:

@unbelievable… he is under pressure all the time because he holds the ball so long. Guys are running around open, get rid of it.

  51. passthebuc Says:

THE GENERAL ASSUMPTION IS THAT FITZ, AT SOME POINT, WILL FALTER. THIS IS BASED ON HIS HISTORY. HOWEVER IN THE SAME VANE, SOME ASSUME THAT JAMEIS, GIVEN TIME CAN WORK OUT HIS PROBLEMS. IN PSYCHOLOGY THIS IS CALLED FULFILLMENT OF SELF DELUSION.

  52. Ripcurl57 Says:

Jmarkbuc / Wild eyed and no composure…yep that’s jmiss , every game..Americas worst qb..
Jmiss lovers put down the koolaide..its finally time to say goodbye .the lovefest for jw is over.

  53. stpetebucsfan Says:

Again…statistically we had a 50-50 chance that JW or MM would have succeeded or failed.

Hindsight of course is better than 50-50 and we now know both of them were bad picks when you consider what we could have hauled in return for dumping that #1 pick.

  54. Doctor Stroud Says:

No win situation! Pull JW too early, and you are admitting that you failed to develop the player. Pull him too late, he will rack up more interceptions. The fate of the franchise hangs in the balance on one player? That must stop.
