“PICK UP THE PHONE AND CALL JAMEIS WINSTON!”

September 27th, 2018

Screams advice for Dirk Koetter.

If Dirk Koetter wants to extend his years as coach of the Bucs beyond his current contract, Jason Whitlock will offer free wisdom.

The co-host of “Speak for Yourself” seen weekdays on FS1, Whitlock believes in no uncertain terms Koetter will doom his career if he hitches his wagon to Ryan Fitzpatrick to lead the Bucs out of the abyss.

Whitlock said, and was hard not to hear given the decibels, that Koetter needs a winner to guide the Bucs out of Buccaneers Cove (last place in the NFC South) and that winner already is on his roster.

That would be Jameis.

You can watch Whitlock’s full take below.

For the folks always harping on Jameis’ record as an NFL quarterback, the Bucs have had but two winning seasons since Chucky was jettisoned. One was with Josh Freeman, who is out of football.

The other? Oh, some guy by the name of “Jameis Winston” was the starting quarterback.

Now who says Jameis cannot win? Speak!

Fantastic take by Whitlock (entertaining too). Probably smarter to start Jamies week 6 after a little more time with the 1st stringers though.

  2. Elita Vita Says:

Fantastic take by Whitlock (entertaining too). I would probably start Jamie’s on week 6 though after Winston has more time to practice with the 1st stringers though.

  3. Elita Vita Says:

    ^ Jameis

  4. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Me thinks there is MUCH more the Bucs and/or the NFL aren’t saying about the whole Jameis situation. If the Bucs can’t/won’t trust Jameis, I think the relationship is DOOMED!

  5. Godeep66 Says:

Correct me if I am wrong but JW is a loser in and off the field!?!?!? The Bucs have 20.5 reasons not to play JW

  6. Buc4L Says:

Jameis is a baller, Will bef be back as starter very soon. This guy Whitlock is a moron, just a few months ago he was calling for the Bucs to CUT Winston, now he wants the Bucs to bench the hot hand?

    GOBUCS!!!

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Remind me again why James Whitlock is sitting as one of a thousand or so ‘talking heads’ on some nondescript weekday program while Dirk Koetter is one of only 32 head coaches in the National Football League. Oh ya, that’s right, now I remember … because James Whitlock’s opinion about who should lead OUR Bucs is totally irrelevant.

For some reason, the media (and quite a few JBFers) seem intent on telling Dirk Koetter who should lead this Bucs football TEAM. Sorta kinda feel that Dirk has a pretty good idea what his mission is (uhhh, TO WIN FOOTBALL GAMES maybe?). And he also probably has a pretty good idea of which QB, based on the prevailing situation, gives our TEAM the best chance of doing that. But I’m also sure that HC Koetter REALLY appreciates all of the help that the media provides him in doing his job. (Rats, still can’t find that ‘Sarcasm Off” key … it keeps moving all around the keyboard me thinks).

  8. Jman Says:

Put him in vs Chicago. Mack will welcome him back. Decision made for you. Or trade him.

  9. Bob in Valrico Says:

George Warhop title was run coordinator at one time ,and that aspect needs much improvement. No QB should be throwing 50 times in a game. I am surprised we are not getting better run blocking and opening up more holes.
We got the beef on the left side with Smith ,Marpet and Jensen. Run game and screen game needs improvement. I don’t expect ROJO to be a factor until run-
    blocking improves.

  10. Bob in Valrico Says:

As for Jameis, in the last two years he has completed less that 8.5% of his attempts over 20 yards. With Fitz completing a little less than 21% of these passes ,this makes the decision to replace Fitz harder than it should be.

  11. Bucsfanman Says:

The tools are there for him to succeed. Therefore, I have two words for Jameis: PROVE IT!
Prove you’re the guy. There should be no question whatsoever in anyone’s mind. Go out and play.
All this TALK means nothing. If the team doesn’t win, it won’t matter anyway.

  12. OneBuc55 Says:

    I agree with Whitlock 1000%

The Eagles wasted no time getting Wentz back under center after 9 months; so why are we worried about a 3 week absence…One thing about JW is he’s always game; I take my hat off to Fitzpatrick for doing his job as a backup…He played well; he even broke a record, but nobody’s ready to say he’s better than Manning or Brady…The fact is Jameis is a better talent by far, and our offense as a whole is better than it was last year…Once we get #3 back under center (the sooner, the better) I don’t expect our offense to skip a beat…

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I am on the fence with this decision…..I simply don’t have enough information on Jameis’ preparedness which makes me lean toward starting Fitz vs Chicago.

I am quite certain Jameis should retain his starting role after the bye.

The one thing that makes me want Jameis is the mobility vs. the Chicago pass rush.

I am very happy that at least our Offense seems to be healthy for that game.

  14. adam from ny Says:

all i’ve ever heard this whitlock dude do, is talk ultra poorly about jameis…like really drag him through the mudd – any time his name came up he totally trashed him …so this whole skit is uber garbage

  15. Ndog Says:

    Two things :
    1. That was awesome!
    2. It was 100% accurate.

    Go Bucs!

And use some common sense, play your best players.

  16. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

I have no confidence in this GM or Coach making the right decision on anything. ROJO cannot learn the playbook (this has been widely reported). The fans have been lied to over and over about the real nature of Vea injury. JW will go on to win a Superbowl , it just won’t be in Tampa. Donovan Smith is a bust. Fitz will start in Chicago and it will get really ugly really fast for Bucs.

  17. Pryda...sec 147 Says:

Bears have great defense now ask yourself this which quarterback has proven to be one of the most lethal qb while under pressure… it sure ain’t Fitz

  18. NJBucsFan Says:

You can’t compare Wentz coming back to Winston coming back…Wentz was out due to injury. He was allowed to be in the team meetings at practice the entire time. Winston was banned from the facility. Wentz was due to injury and Winston was due to conduct. Additionally the Eagles didn win the Super Bowl because of Foles, he almost lost them the game in the first round of the playoffs. If Atlanta had a DB that can catch an INT their season is done.

  19. Phil Says:

If Koetter doesn’t start Winston after the bye week he is done as the Bucs coach. I think Jameis should start this Sunday.

  20. ArmyBucsFan Says:

It’s not even about who is the better quarterback at this point. Jameis has to not only earn his teammates and coaches trust, he also has to earn back his fans trust when he let us all down. If he doesn’t play until week 6 I am fine with it because he needs to make sure he is in rhythm with his receivers and he needs for the love of his learn how to throw an accurate deep ball. He is also going to have to earn his pay now.

  21. i like gunslingers Says:

well the last thing this organization wants to do is piss off jameis, they screw around long enough he will demand a trade, this is the #1 pick in the draft, he has completed his suspension, and is complying with the other demands set forth by the league officials, this will not set well with this young man, if the local press, keep hounding and belittle him, he will have enough and it will be time to go, right now there is a team that could use his services, this has to stop, his play on the field and his order in the draft command a certain amount of respect, he is not ryan leaf, his demeanor and play reflects that. imho the very least he sits is chicago, unless this organization has deemed him damaged goods. then we right back to searching for a QB among other things

  22. orlbucfan Says:

DK will do what he’s paid to do: put the best team on the field Sunday. Fitz is hurt so no telling how long he will last. You can bet the refs will be ‘picky’ about roughing-the-passer calls. Fameis is ready and healthy. Go MIGHTY BUC OFFENSE!! 3-1.

  23. The Buc Realist Says:

The Head Coach going with JW3 would probably happen if the sheep and so-called fans did not insist of this “make or brake” season and putting everyone on the hot-seat!!!!!! If you called for no excuses, or accountability, and fire everyone, then don’t be surprised that the Bucs play the best bet to win in the current game and lose out of what is best in the long term!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Posey99 Says:

The guy is going to be a great QB once he matures. Overall, I think the suspension and losing his starting gig to Fitz is helping with that process.

  25. Wausa Says:

I agree that Jamies should start immediately and I also agree that he is on the verge of becoming an elite QB.

My guess is Jamies will win multiple Super Bowls, but it’s not going to be with the Bucs.
It was an unfortunate situation that Jamies did to himself. However, I just do not believe Dirk Koetter is going to handle this situation properly. The fact that he doesn’t have the guts to publicly say who the QB is going to be is a huge red flag in my opinion.

The agent Jamies hired is a strong indication that he is strongly considering his exit from Tampa in the near future.

  26. Anonymous Says:

As soon as Jameis is inserted as the Bucs QB, he will win the game and never look back.
I just hope it is this week.

  27. AlteredEgo Says:

Koetter’s and every NFL HC in the bottom half of the W/L record is always on the hot seat….however I bet he sleeps easier with Fitz playing QB than Jameis….

  28. dmatt Says:

The real problem is our defense. We haven’t had a competitive defense since DBrooks retired.

  30. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Settle down. The Bucs own Jameis through 2019. They could ride the firzmagic all year then give JW 2019 to prove it. As long as Fitz keeps balling I see no need to take him out, especially just to “keep Jameis happy”. Self inflicted wound. He’ll either get over it or he won’t.

  31. Walter Seidel Says:

You are what your record says you are, and there is no debating wins vs. losses.

  32. johnnybuc Says:

this guy is a clown only reason he is backing winston is because everybody else is on the fitz train … that’s his shtick, go opposite of what everybody else is saying. i agree that winston should be starting because there is no doubt he is the best qb on the roster & the keys to winning in the nfl is playing and putting your best players in positions to win. winston gives us a better chance at winning . but not buying into that bull that whitlock is selling

  33. 813bucboi Says:

    onebuc55

I agree….look at what philly did…..soon as the foles magic rubbed off, philly went back to wentz…..and the coaches let everyone know Monday morning…..

just like Winston, dirk did this to himself…..all this drama could’ve been laid to rest if dirk grow a pair and named a starter vs the bears…..

dirk put himself on the hot seat…..and the QB drama combined with the lousy defense is making his seat hotter…..

dirk has to realize that he became the HC because of Winston….not because of his work with a back up QB…..if he fails to get the most out of Winston, he fails as an HC…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  34. Big Stinky Says:

I love how everyone wants Jameis to start this week vs. Chicago without much practice. He is not going to be ready in time. Fitz gives us the best chance to win since he has been playing since the start of the season. I hope when JW finally does start he looks like he did in the preseason. Otherwise we are not going to win when he comes back. People forget how bad he is at throwing the deep ball and Monken likes to go deep often in a game. I have to admit I am curious to see how JW looks this year but until Fitzpatrick starts playing like he did in the 2nd quarter of the Steelers game I think I would wait. We have a legitimate shot at making the Playoffs with this quick start this season and I don’t expect Jameis to keep it up. I hope I am wrong because I am tired of losing every year. I think he needs the defense to play better than they have so far this season in order to win. Otherwise we are going to get behind like we did in the Steelers game and won’t be able to keep up. Jameis has a hard time scoring 30+ points and so far this season that has been what it takes to win. I am happy watching Fitzy play at the moment because he is averaging 34 points a game and I don’t think JW has averaged more than 21 in his 3 years here. There is no way everyone is going to be happy unless Jameis comes back and lights it up. It would be a waste if we don’t make the Playoffs this year and there is no guarantee we will get there with Winston. Just let Fitzpatrick play until we are out of first place in our division. Then Jameis can try to get us back into first or at least get us a Wildcard berth.

  35. ben Says:

    Winston who??

  36. AlteredEgo Says:

Stat Carriers……many of Jameis completions were due to receivers with “large catch radius”…which goes down as a reception ( recall Evans falls down after the catch)….while completions… many of Jameis pass were not throw on time or to the spot resulting in low YAC stat dat ! This has been the biggest difference between Fitz and Jameis

  37. Big Stinky Says:

    @ 813bucboi

You are comparing Jameis to Wentz and it’s not even close to the situation we are in. JW and Fitzy are practically the same QB even though Jameis has more upside. I hope Fitzpatrick keeps throwing for 400 yards every game because as long as he is there is no reason to start Jameis. It would be nice to see if Winston is the QB we want going forward though. Time to make up our minds.

  38. Bucman0620 Says:

Just so everyone can relax… I just got off the phone with Dirk and here is the plan. Ryan is going to start this week. If he starts falling apart like Mondays first half in comes Jameis to be the hero. If he does well, Jameis will use the bye week to come back into the starting role. There, everyone can stop speculating what is going to happen. Jameis and Dirk don’t dislike each other, the Bucs want Jameis as their QB for a very long time. They are thankful that they have a guy like Ryan that can step in and do what he has done. Next year, they aren’t sure if Ryan is going to want to come back. They will not push as hard next year to have him return because they will be turning to Griff as the Backup to Jameis. I told Dirk, there is nothing wrong with putting this info out there to everyone. His response was simply “I know, I don’t really care if they know or not because it is all common sense. If they can’t figure it out I’m not going to help them.”

  39. Optimistic in CT Says:

I like Whitlock a lot and it’s not a bad take but Clay Travis said it best with facts of the last 12 games 6 starts a piece. Fitz is the guy who should start on numbers alone. Winston has let the fans and Team down with his off the field and on the field nonsense. As the Franchise player He needs to be relied on to just be there and play the game and not be suspended. Let’s pay this dude and maybe he will turn around as a pure business look i would not be comfortable with him being our brand most reconisable person.

  40. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    OMG, that was….AWESOME!!!!!!!

Saturday Night Live worthy right there, lol.

  41. 813bucboi Says:

    big stinky

you comparing Winston to fitz isn’t even close…..lol…..their situation is very similar to our….

foles won some games last year but no one is saying foles is better than wentz…..

fitz won a couple games last year but no one was saying trade Winston or that fitz should be the starter….where was fitz magic last year?…..

philly was hoping foles could steal a game or 2 until wentz got back…….bucs were hoping fitz could steal a game until Winston got back…..

foles stole a game, lost a game and wentz was named the starter after the lost……fitz stole 2 games, lost 1 and now its time for this staff to name Winston the starter…..

and throwing for 400yards is no reason to keep fitz the starter…..along with 400yards he threw 3ints 1 being a pick6…..

its time to end the drama and name Winston the starter and see if this offense under monken can be just as if not more productive…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  42. Dapostman Says:

Why do Buc fans keep comparing Fitz 2018 to Winston 2015-2017? It’s apples and oranges. They keep harping on wins vs losses. Well Fitz is 2-1 in 2018. Winston went 9-7 in 2016 as a 22 year old starter. They say Fitz has thrown for 400+ yards three games in a row. No QB in NFL history has thrown for 400+ yards three games in a row. Not Peyton, Brady, Brees, Favre, Marino or any other. That’s an outlier like the Cubs Tuffy Rhoades who hit 3 home runs on opening day off Dwight Gooden in 1994. Tuffy who?

The comparison should be Fitz/Winston 2017. Fitz/Winston 2018 preseason. There is no comparison. Winston is the better player. Koetter may opt to start Fitz in week 4 due to timing with the WR’s but Winston should be installed as starter in week 6 at the ATL. This being the Bucs nothing they do surprises me though.

    #Get After It!

  43. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

You know what? The haters are stupid.

Seriously. How can you sit there if you are a fan of the Buccaneers and not want Jameis, who is our best option, in as a starter???

If you want Fitz instead, you need to take a step back and consider some things:

    • The Steelers showed the NFL how to beat Ryan Fitzpatrick. Now everyone will do the same things.

    • Three picks in one quarter of football! Think about it. Don’t give me this bull that it was not his fault. A ball is tipped because of the release! If it had been Winston, you would say it was his fault, so stop being hypocrites!

    • Jameis Winston has been out 4 weeks (counting the last preseason game). In that time, he brought together a complete offensive and defensive unit, simulated the Buccaneers work schedule, simulated games, held two-a-days four times a week and studied film. The truth is, Jameis is more ready for the Bears than Ryan Fitzpatrick, because he’s had 4 weeks to prepare for them!!!!

    • Jameis Winston looked better in the preseason. Don’t give me this bull about him being in with backups. Guess what? Jameis ALWAYS looks better than Fitz in every preseason! And let’s not forget! This Preseason, Jameis also played with the starters (the Bucs split the reps between him and Fitz) so that point is totally moot!

    • We saw what happens when Fitzpatrick gets rattled. He makes mistakes. He is a great backup, when he can come in and play the hero, but give him the reigns, and he’ll blow it every time. That’s why he is a career backup.

    • This whole ‘hot hand’ theory is one based on fear. What if Winston comes in and does not do as well? Oh no! We can’t risk that! Come on, people. Get real. The reason this team has had a losing record the past year or so was not Jameis Winston. It was because of bad offensive line play and a bad defense. You all know that, so stop pretending otherwise. And Stop. Blaming. Jameis.

Let the Bears keep wondering, but start Jameis.

  44. Buc1987 Says:

Well said Bonzai as usual lately.

  45. unbelievable Says:

    Bonzai nailed it.

    I can’t stand Whitlock, but he’s 100% correct.

  46. Godeep66 Says:

Who is the Winston guy that everyone is talking about????? Talked about the better players and the starters. Talking about this Winston guy is know different than talking about the long snapper or the guys on the practice field.

    A BIG TRADE IS COMING!!!!!

  47. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

    I agree with Bonzai!
I can’t stand Whitlock either, but that is reality what he speaks…people who want to use this time to punish Jameis for an alleged event, may find it too late after Jameis can’t stand sitting on the bench any longer go in the direction his agent lead him….and it won’t be a team like the losing BUCs that he inherited.

This is right on point put the title below in YOUTUBE…get a good laugh at the BUCS expense

We have the #1 offense in the league and you think we should change the QB immediately… um ok.
It’s called strategy… so like.. the other team doesn’t know who’s playing

  49. swissPolitics Says:

    Bonzai,

Winston makes poor decisions both on and off the field. On the field, Fitzy played against tough teams and caught the excitement of the Buc’s fandom with 11 quarters of historically good play. Off the field, I have never heard of him doing anything bad to anyone.

    As per your points:
    – everyone already knows how to defeat Winston; this is a matter of record.
    – 3 picks is terrible, how is Winston, your gunslinger at protecting the ball? Answer: One of the worst in the entire NFL
    – So a millionaire, terrified to lose his job hired people to help him? Oh, how noble! I hope Winston DOES start against that defensive line and reveal himself to all as consistently incompetent in the face of pressure.
-What was the multi-million dollar franchise quarterback’s record last year? What was the lowly Journeyman quarterbacks record with the same team? Look it up, you might be shocked out of overpaying someone.
-Your hero, Franchise Winston makes incredibly ridiculous decisions in the face of pressure. Why do you hold the record-setting bargain of a lifetime accountable for this but not #3?
-You and others have made so many excuses for the FSU turnover machine that you forget what accountability really is. I am pretty certain that Winston just needed a good running game and a defense and all would be Super Bowls and Lemonade. Well, Fitzmagic has neither of those and he has continued to outperform America’s Quarterback, Grabby McGraberton.
