One Player Is Happy With Monken

September 9th, 2018

Bruised and battered in celebration.

Based on just today’s results, Bucs fans haven’t been this happy since they saw the Bucs’ cheerleader calendar circa 2010.

Bucs offensive coordinator Todd Monken, with a backup quarterback, oversaw one of the greatest offensive explosions in Bucs history, hanging 48 points and 529 yards on the defending NFC South champions.

The Bucs offense was beyond aggressive today, pushing the ball downfield as if Monken channeled Don Coryell at some shady voodoo backroom seance in the French Quarter last night.

One overly happy guy was left tackle Donovan Smith. As Monken entered the locker room, Smith damned near beat up his offensive coordinator he was so pumped.

Watch the video below shot by Buccaneers.com’s Casey Phillips as Smith, unable to contain his glee, assaulted Monken.

Joe bets Monken is one sore mofo tomorrow morning.

Monken called a great first 3 quarters. Maybe turtled a little too soon. But this offense looks explosive. Top 3 explosive!

  2. unbelievable Says:

    LOL.

Just watched Dirk’s post game presser, he got all weird when someone asked who called the plays….

  3. TheShaz Says:

    If Monken got hurt there…..

Would he show up on the injury report tomorrow?

  4. SchwiftyBuc Says:

100% deserving of the promotion and every bit of praise he gets. He called one hell of a game and clutched victory from the Jaws of defeat.

The “it’s only preseason” crowd got BTFO today. Just as they will be when Jameis makes his triumphant return. Love me some Fitzmagic and the dude balled out. But Jameis outplayed him in preseason, and showed signs of major maturation.

If the defensive coordinator can remove his cranium from his rectum, this team can do big, big things this season. Also, big props to Koetter for being man enough to make Monk the playcaller. Takes a lot of guts to subdue your ego and do what’s right.

  5. Juggernautical Says:

Great game….probably got too close for comfort late in the 4th but that’s to be expected when going against a future HOFer. Just hope the VHIII and DJax injuries aren’t too severe.

  6. Bculaw Says:

Say what you want, but Donovan Smith is a big, powerful man. He could throw Monken around like a rag doll!

  7. stpetebucsfan Says:

Make the FG and there would be no talk about Moncken turtling or Smitty’s prevent defense.

Make the FG and it’s a three score game and the loud Saints fans would have headed to the exits. Miss it and not only give the Aints a chance it fired up them and fans.

    MAKE A FREAKING KICK…PUHLEEZE!!!

  8. Rod Munch Says:

Mike Evans Goat – I am almost certain that Dirk started calling the plays at around 8 mins left in the game, or he told Monken to shut it down. That’s a guess watching Dirk when they’d show him on the sidelines, I could be wrong, but the playcalling and the way Dirk was acting changed at that time.

Regardless when you score 41 points on offense you’ve had a great day.

  9. Rod Munch Says:

stpetebucsfan – with a hot take like that I can see why you were destined for radio fame.

    Just kidding, LOL!

  10. Bob in Valrico Says:

I believe Koetter called the last pass to Djax. He was looking at his playsheet
and I saw him talking on the radio shortly after that.. Thats the only one I saw.

  11. Bob in Valrico Says:

We need to have a backup for Barber. He seemed to be tired towards the end of the game. I believe it should be Wilson. He gained about 5 yards on his only carry. Quizz has struggled to run the ball.In his defense , I believe he was tackled by the helmet on one attempt.

  12. NJBucsFan Says:

Are the sideways pictures some type code, joke, or just poor proofing?

  13. DB55 Says:

I think ds just got suspended for 3 games for conduct unbecoming

  14. JimmyJack Says:

Dirk may not have been calling the plays but he seemed much more dialed-in to what was going on at field level today. Game management was pristine. I could not say that last year.

  15. JimmyJack Says:

Bob……RoJo was inactive today. I wanted them to give a few looked to Wilson but they didn’t to my recollection.

Would be nice to see them break out with some big play ability out of the backfield.

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Rod

OK you got me there…it was pretty obvious. I’m surprised though that I haven’t read more about it.

BTW I’m not down on our kicker…I think it was deflected.

  17. BigMacAttack Says:

The Bucs O line was almost perfect today. They were money. Great job guys!

  18. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

StPete I read someone got a hand on that ball so not all his fault. Making Monkren the OC was the best decision Koetter ever made. He must have went to ECPI. Now he needs to ride that stallion to a great session!

  19. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

    Smith is one big dude.

  20. webster Says:

The oline was great today in pass protection. Fitz had a clean pocket to throw from all game long and he hit wide open receivers. Thats why i laughed at posters calling for djax to be traded and crying because licht drafted OJ. There are too many weapons out there which means one on one match ups are everywhere. Couple that with great line execution and you can be dynamic. Imagine that, a running game and great oline play equates to great offense. Who would have thunk it?

  21. R.O. Says:

Offense hung 30 on the Saints. Special Teams hung 12 and Defense hung 6.

  22. webster Says:

Oh and for all u butt hurt mariota lovers, he is injured again with 2 ints. He is not better than winston. Stop it!!!!!

  23. Mike Johnson Says:

We got the receivers and a running game. Just Imagine…IF..we really can get this Defense clicking? Yes we won. And I am Happy. But 40 pts is a lot to give up. we will not win every shootout. Its impossible. Get better DEFENSE!!

  24. Kobe Faker Says:

    “First time poster…Be nice”
    “I bleed pewter”

    Kobe Faker

  25. JWBUCS Says:

For those who suspect that Koetter may have taken over playing calling in the final minutes of the game today, I believe its possible Koetter used his authority as the Head Coach to instruct Monken on plays he wanted to be called and potentially discouraged calls to his OC when Todd was still thinking aggression… Just my 2 cents, but bottom line I enjoyed the Game Management, the execution by the team, the level of performance by Receivers and especially impressed with our Veteran QB executing great performance as the Back-up Quarterback… Great Day Tampa Bay!

  26. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

What a great celebration of an awesome game. Hope Monken can walk tomorrow.

  27. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

It did get very conservative in the final minutes. I had the same thought that Dirk was squashing the aggressive play calling. Hope he doesn’t do that again.

  28. BigMacAttack Says:

Catanzaro needs to do a better job. Some kicks just have to be made and he missed the one that had to be made….. in a dome no less.

  29. jjbucfan Says:

Stop with the BS, Monken called our plays and when you are up by as much as we are, we have to try to run some clock, so just stop it. I said it all last year, Koetter’s play calling cost us a bunch of games last year. However, admitting (if not publicly but with your actions) and correcting your mistakes is the mark of a good leader. Again, those that forget history are doomed to repeat it. Great job Bucs top to bottom!!

  30. Topdoggie Says:

Didn’t Kotter get upset Lovie made him go into turtle mode?

  31. Owlykat Says:

Tremendous OL play today. Both D. Smith and Dotson did a great job against the Saint’s dangerous DEs, and overall I have not seen such great line play ever by our Offense. On Defense our DL got a good push against a good Saint’s OL that limited their running game inside and made Breeze uneasy. Kudos to Curry sacking Breeze too. Justin Evans had a great game and I was glad we had VHIII and Smith playing CB with their experience. Carleton made some good plays and he is only going to get better the more he plays. It is a pleasure not to hear the haters predicting doom and gloom on here now. Let’s go beat the Eagles next week! Fitz was terrific!

  32. buc15 Says:

BigMac that kick was deflected and still almost went through. Our kicker is solid as fook

  33. Gambelero Says:

Barber and Wilson didn’t play that much because Quizz had such an unbelievable game, a real savant in pass pro. It’s almost like he studied film for several months and read the blitzes before they happened.

  34. Trench War Says:

Now if we could get Mike Bajakian to call some games we’d have a 3-headed monster that would give opposing DC’s a fit to game plan against. You know that’s why Koetter is keeping it close to the vest. To Keep ’em guessing

  35. BigMacAttack Says:

I heard someone else say it was tipped. Didn’t look like it at the time. If I’m wrong I’ll admit it.

  36. Matthew Says:

Seemed like the defense still needs work. I didn’t get to watch the game so I can’t say what i didnt like but there were things I saw from highlights I liked and didn’t like. I didnt like how the secindary just looked lost when it came down to covering players. Until this issue is fixed I am not too sure how it ever will perform. Whatever we did week 1 and this off-season we should change it and try something else for week 2 lol . Can’t let 500 yards go through the air every week. Of course Nick Foles probably won’t succeed throwing that much anyways. I don’t see him throwing the ball a bunch down field like Aaron Rodgers or tom Brady that’s not his style . I can’t sit here and act like our defense for worse somehow . JPP , curry , I mean I don’t see how new corners made us worse.

  37. Jeffbuc Says:

Now just how he wakes up tomorrow carrying his big mother fng stick. And let’s soneone take over defensive play calling duties. Friend or not my job is on the line and you were the worst at your coaching duty out of all coaches last year. And game one this year you gave up 40 points. So I am goin got relieve you of defensive(kinda) play calling duties. We gave you 48 points today and you still almost blew it. Kamara walked into the end zone three times. Literally walked in on two 2 point conversions

  38. lambchop Says:

Dirk manned up by giving Monken the play call duties. The very least the press and the fans can do is not Irk the Dirk by rubbing salt in the wound by asking who called the plays. Who F-ing cares as long as whoever is calling said plays continues to drop dimes into the scoreboard bucket.

  39. THETRUTH Says:

Game plan is done by both and as long as we are producing points kotter should be happy cause those points that Monken is calling for will save his job.

Don’t think there issue sound more like media and fans want to play it up and cause problem.

    Is 813Bucboi happy?
