Double Standard
September 7th, 2018Man, Joe could just imagine the howling if roles were reversed.
Last night in the first game of the NFL season (finally!) Dixie Chicks quarterback Matty Ice choked away a win in the fourth quarter to the defending champion Eagles. Matty Ice had two turnovers on godawful plays. He threw a terrible pick on the two-yard line. Later, his fumble in his own territory set up the Eagles for their game-winning drive.
Oh, and deep in Eagles territory in the final seconds with multiple chances to score, Matty Ice came up empty.
Where has Joe seen that before?
But those two horrid turnovers by Matty Ice made Joe think of the rank double standard in the NFL or even with Bucs fans.
Joe is a Matty Ice fan but Joe would bet dollars to donuts few if any will scream for Matty Ice to get run much less benched.
But God forbid if America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, made two heinous plays like that to cost the Bucs a game. Why, there would be a riot at the Den of Depression!

99-70 career record vs. 18-27 career record. ‘Nuff said.
September 7th, 2018 at 8:07 am
As a Bucs fan, I am happy Matty Ice choked on his junk. If he keeps playing like that I never want him benched. But if a Bucs QB (no matter who it is) does the same, of course we are going to bitch about it!
September 7th, 2018 at 8:12 am
I love my team…
I love Jameis…
Well said Walter.
SHOW ME!
Go Bucs!
September 7th, 2018 at 8:12 am
@Joe
That was one of the worst opening half’s of football I had ever seen. Overall both QB’s were awful, missed reads, terrible decision making (dropped passes too) and Ice’s pick in the red zone should make Dixie Chicks fans wanna head down to St. Jude’s and pray for Julio Jones soul. Even he couldn’t believe that throw as he watched in horror! Meanwhile how about that pass rush from Philly!! Vicious!! Only if our Bucs could do that…..sigh.
September 7th, 2018 at 8:15 am
They better bring a 3rd QB, cause Fritz and Griffin won’t finish against Philly and that Defensive front
“Fly eagles fly”
America’s QB JW3
September 7th, 2018 at 8:15 am
Offensive turnovers
Atlanta 2016 #1 ranked with 11 Giveaways
Atlanta 2017 #9 ranked with 18 Giveaways
Tampa Bay 2016 #24th with 27 Giveaways
Tampa Bay 2017 #26th with 27 Giveaways
Double standard my azzzz!!!!!!!! That was a “real” top 10 defense that we watched last night!!!!!! Jw3 has not fared well against “real” top 10 defenses!!!!!! I don’t care for melted ice ryan!!!!!!! But some are way off on this subject!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#trust the coaches!!!!! Fix the “real” problem!!!!!! The Roster!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 7th, 2018 at 8:16 am
well if we beat the saints and cowboys beat the panthers that 3 game suspension doesn’t loom as large any more, go bucs, and go cowgirls
September 7th, 2018 at 8:17 am
Walter Seidel — To walters point…. Matty Ice has been in playoffs, won in playoffs, and made it to a super bowl. He gets more leeway in my opinion.
September 7th, 2018 at 8:17 am
Walter you do know we are talking about football not golf right? In case you are not aware, and by your comments you can’t really tell, in football there are 11 players on offense and 11 on defense and all of those players help determine which teams win and lose. In golf it can be one person that blows a shot but again in football everyone must do their part for teams to win. I just figured I would help you out since you clearly don’t understand. You’re welcome.
September 7th, 2018 at 8:17 am
I will say that Matt Ryan continually has turnovers late in games that cost his team….
I will also say that I believe the Eagles’ defense had a great deal to do with his problems last night.
September 7th, 2018 at 8:19 am
Martha Ice is getting hammered in the Atlanta press. One article even stated that he looked for like JW than Matty Ice.
September 7th, 2018 at 8:20 am
Oh my God Joe give it a rest! Now you’re coming up with defenses and excuses for Jameis who is not even playing this week. Maybe the three games suspension is why people want to run him out of town. Not the fictional game scenario comparing him to a different quarterback. When are you ever going to learn to except The fact that Jameis may have a big upside as a quarterback but has done some really unacceptable actions off the field. Some people are going to root for him some are not. But stop making excuses and thinking you have to defend your lover every damn day.
September 7th, 2018 at 8:21 am
At least we can look back in the season and say that we are one time tied with Atlanta record wise.
September 7th, 2018 at 8:27 am
On another note: I have been going to the Bucs NOLA game for the past 12 years and I can honestly say that last nights Bucs Fans presence was at a all time low for the Thursday night before the asunday game. This place used to crawl with Bucs Fans Thursday through Sunday. What gives?????
September 7th, 2018 at 8:27 am
To be fair Joe you make a fresh bed in the Den of Depression more than anyone. One might even say you are the mayor there.
September 7th, 2018 at 8:29 am
Agreed Joe
September 7th, 2018 at 8:48 am
Joe, you can’t win for losing!! You get accused of attacking Winston….and you get accused of deflecting blame on Winston….. The Great Divide is real. Regardless of what you publish.
September 7th, 2018 at 8:50 am
NOt sure if its on matt ryan or crappy play calling at the goal line, if sarkisian had any balls he would have run the philly special when he got down there, koetter has no creativity at all but the falcons were moving the ball up & down the field but just stalled, screens work….falcons suck so its whatever but….i woulda called philly special on the goaline and trolled the eagles all year long
September 7th, 2018 at 8:56 am
@Godeep66
Martha Ice……LMFAO!
September 7th, 2018 at 9:00 am
Oh Joe(s)!!!! How I agree!!!!
NFL Analysts on Jameis – “Fourth year and he’s still making the same bad decisions that cost his team the game.”
Same Analysts on Matty Ice (and others) – “Boy, that defense was really something tonight! They mugged the receivers and forced the QB into two bad throws.” (In comes Collinsworth) “You know, Al, two bad throws is all it takes in this league!”
I’ll be out back tuning my world’s smallest violin.
September 7th, 2018 at 9:00 am
Matt Ryan has two fantastic running backs, while the Bucs had one of the five worst defenses in NFL history and an awful running game.
Look at what foolish media and fans were saying about Nick Foles after last nights game..
“He just wins”
Nick Foles looked pathetic last night, but because the Eagles have a great defense and a strong running game they win.
Jamies has not been blessed with those pieces around him, but hopefully this year the Bucs will have an average defense and an average running game.
If they do the Bucs will be in the playoffs.

Yeah, and you’re a bad joke as an incompetent troll.
September 7th, 2018 at 9:02 am
When Winston wins big, then folks can complain about “double standards.”
September 7th, 2018 at 9:08 am
Of course winston needs to be eligible to either win or lose so there is that and pretty sure marth ice never has that problem
September 7th, 2018 at 9:14 am
I’ve seen hypocritical coverage of JW for sure…but not this.
Bad play is bad play and if JW plays like Matty Ice last night of course people are going to react harshly.
Matty Ice got the Falcons to the SB…JW has gotten us to….not even one playoff game.
Now do not blast me…I’m not even suggesting that it’s JW”s fault we’ve missed the playoffs the past three years anymore than it’s GMC’s or LVD’s or Kwon’s…but it is what it is. In the absence of any real success…no record to fall back on…JW will keep getting blasted.
And it’s not just because everybody treats him unfairly. Unfairly or not…JW or Drew Brees…QB’s get too much credit and too much blame for a TEAM record.
But QB is still the most important position on the field so it’s not totally unfair.
September 7th, 2018 at 9:25 am
That game last night was pretty boring as if Dirk was the offensive coordinator. Neither team looks impressive but hey bucs will have the first pick in the draft lol
September 7th, 2018 at 9:27 am
That tells Joe he is being fair.
You guys know what made that game tough to watch? All the flags.
September 7th, 2018 at 9:27 am
I could car less about ATL but if JJ catches that deep ball instead of bobbling it and sliding out of bounds if might’ve been a different story…..
#NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!
September 7th, 2018 at 9:35 am
When your team is a winner and you’re comparing players from a losing team, YES there is rightfully a double-standard.
Color me crazy, but did those two teams look “unbeatable” to ANYONE?!
Yea, didn’t think so!
Where you at Buc fans?!
September 7th, 2018 at 9:43 am
The “real” fans wonder why, that Joe did not bring up the “double standard” that philly played off-coverage last night, yet on Sunday, the first play that is off-coverage for the Bucs, the sheep will scream that Coach Smitty is the worst DC and that he should be fired right then and Buckner should take over DC by half time!!!!!!!!!LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 7th, 2018 at 9:44 am
St. Pete right on and great points, the main telling point of what you are saying is the Patriots and is it the chicken or the egg, is it belichek or brady? Belichek had the browns on the brink and then they moved and he was gone, so I am guessing in 3 years when brady retires we may find out if belichek sticks around, but the QB is always the face of the team win or lose
September 7th, 2018 at 9:50 am
11 on 11. Only Brady and Rodgers are capable of carrying a team with a bad run game and bad defense. Period end of story. Winston has had the worst weapons the year he had a good defense. The other two years he had the worst defense and run game but had weapons. And oh yeah missing 2-3 chip shots a game has an impact as well. This year he may have a run game and defense and even a kicker. We will see come week four
September 7th, 2018 at 9:52 am
Not to mention he’s had terrible coaching even. Lovie- enough said. Koetter continued to pound Martin who was alarmingly awful as well as throwing deep continuously on 3rd and short despite a line that couldn’t hold blocks to let the routes develop. And then there’s good old Smitty playing off coverage against guys like Brady who love short throws. It’s not rocket science people. No matter what happens this year I can tell you that winston will be back and if the coaches r gone then Glazer’s will bring in Schwartz or someone as long as they’re on board with Winston. If you don’t think Schwartz scheme is getting the pressure you’re insane. Man to man blitzes win in this league
September 7th, 2018 at 9:58 am
JW is a good QB. I would say is right in the middle of all QB’s in the league. Either he will get better or he will not. If the Bucs choose to part ways with him they must be looking at Ryan Griffin for the next 5 years.
September 7th, 2018 at 9:58 am
All I know is that both of those teams looked very beatable last night.
September 7th, 2018 at 10:04 am
Steve Sarkisian is the worst OC in the NFL. He belongs back in the NCAA, he’s not qualified for the NFL. Why Matt Ryan has to throw 43 passes and Devonta Freeman get 6 carries, Tevin Coleman gets 9 carries. Julio Jones gets 19 targets, Mohamed Sanu gets 6 targets, Calvin Ridley gets 2 targets. Matty Ice deserves some blame for his poor play. But Steve Sarkisian deserves more blame for his stupid playcalling.
September 7th, 2018 at 10:05 am
GoDeep says,”At least we can look back in the season and say that we are one time tied with Atlanta record wise.”
I tend to think that the Falcons are mired in last place while the Bucs are tied for 1st place.
Just imagine how bad the Falcons will be when Julio Jones (169 yards) gets banged up and rides the bench. Martha only had 82 yards passing without him.
It seemed to me that Martha was forcing the ball to JJ in double coverage to help him redeem his dropped TD from their playoff loss to the Iggles last year.
Almost like Jameis forcing the ball to Evan’s in the last game last year.
September 7th, 2018 at 10:08 am
All anyone knows of Winston in the NFL are losses. This makes for bad entertainment. Until he changes that association his image will never improve. No matter if you compared him to Peyton Manning. There is no double standard. Ryan is throwing passes week one and Winston is suspended. End of conspiracy.
September 7th, 2018 at 10:11 am
@Dusthy
You illustrate a fascinating question…and yeah chicken or egg is a great metaphor.
It’s great for we sports fans because the debate over is it Belichek or Brady will last a long time.
Some guys transcend it by winning with either different QB’s or different coaches.
I’m thinking Don Shula or Bill Parcells and on the QB side…Peyton Manning who not only won with two different teams but adapted a new style after his neck injury.
September 7th, 2018 at 10:15 am
during the game i was thinking the same as you joe! there were some horrible throws by both Ryan & Foles last night… and was saying to myself if this was Winston, they’d be crying about how he’s not accurate, trade him & drafting his replacement LOL
September 7th, 2018 at 10:17 am
Stop the comparisons. I just want OUR guy to win!

“Good thing the eagles had nick foles and his 117 passing yards and his int to lead his team to victory because the win had nothing to do with the defense holding the falcons to 12 pts. It was all because foles had 117 yards and 1 int. He knows how to win. Jameis throwing for 300+ yards and 3 tds and the bucs losing in the 4th qtr with less than 3 minutes to go due to defense sucking and giving up 28+ pts and being 32nd in total defense equates to jameis not knowing how to win. Smmfh.”
Or what Webster said at 3 in the morning. The guy above me is an example….
September 7th, 2018 at 10:24 am
even the announcer said last night… the culprit was more lousy offense then it was great defense…if this offense continues its preseason form into the season, i will be very optimistic about this season!!
September 7th, 2018 at 10:26 am
The thing that gets me is the peeps that want JW gone…never make any valid points as to why….you can throw out all kinds of stuff at them…and they always come back with some horse crap that most can see through like glass.
OMG an 87 repost!! (kind of)
Buc1987 Says :

“Andrew we’re both Noles fans and I wouldn’t go near JW with a 20 foot pole. I’m a Bucs fan first.”
September 7th, 2018 at 11:12 am
Both of their first passes did go for touchdowns…
September 7th, 2018 at 11:12 am
Comparing the resume of Matty Ice and Jaboo is like comparing apples to crablegs
September 7th, 2018 at 11:33 am
Absolutely hilarious gman!!!!
Agree whole heartedly
September 7th, 2018 at 12:09 pm
This is a sad article. Didn’t Ryan sit out all preseason?
Lame.
September 7th, 2018 at 12:21 pm
I live in Atlanta. The fans aren’t sold on Matty Ice.
September 7th, 2018 at 12:39 pm
Ryan is a proven QB; Jameis is not (yet).
September 7th, 2018 at 1:19 pm
philly mixed in man coverage……they can be effective playing off coverage because they have a nasty front 4 and a aggressive DC….
and I didn’t see 1 miscommunication break down in philly’s secondary……yet smitty still has “communication issues” heading into his 3rd year……
jimschwarts for HC!!!!!!!
#NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!
September 7th, 2018 at 1:39 pm
813 right on!!!! ronde as GM too
September 7th, 2018 at 1:47 pm
If Jameis did the same thing? He does it all the time, and that’s the point. He had 19 turnovers and averaged 8 points in the first half of games last year, and you want to blast the defense for not keeping a lead? How about scoring some points and playing with a lead instead of throwing a bunch of garbage time yards.
September 7th, 2018 at 1:57 pm
The Buc Realist Says: “A real top 10 Defense”??? Is that what that was? I thought it was just awful play by two sucky quarterbacks.
On the lighter side: Matt Ryan is over rated. Look at his playoff recored.
September 7th, 2018 at 2:51 pm
I knew with certainty that Matty Ice would once again blow it – there’s a reason the guy was named a choke artist many years ago, way before he choked away the SB.
I also knew last year that Alex Smith would choke away the playoff game (go read the live thread from the day, I was calling it at half time that Smith would figure out how to lose that game even with a big lead).
There’s just some things that will always be true and you need something or someone special to change that, like how Tony Dungy was able to take Manning and make him a winner by giving him a great defense so he didn’t need to win the game since he’d always choke at the end of big games (same pattern Denver took).
September 7th, 2018 at 4:04 pm
Well, JW won’t be losing us the opener because, you know… he’s suspended. I bet JW wouldn’t hear any boos if he wins the league mvp, wins playoff games, takesus to the super bowl ect. Remember that crappy falcons team that Ryan lead to the playoff his rookie year? That was a bad team coming off a 4-12 year, but Ryan got them to the playoffs. No wonder he is well liked in atlanta
September 7th, 2018 at 4:37 pm
miken….and if the Bucs lose this Sunday it will be Fitzpatrick that got them the loss..
September 7th, 2018 at 4:46 pm
Matt ryan was 18-30 from 2013 thru 2015. How is that any different that winstons first 3 seasons record? We see what we wanna see in this world. Sad world we live in .
September 7th, 2018 at 5:09 pm
@buc1987… i know that’s the point…. Ryan isn’t facing another sexual assult charge or a suspension. Maybe that’s why he’s a little more well liked by his home fans. Of course, fitzpatrick is only playing bc of jw’s stupidity.
September 7th, 2018 at 5:21 pm
@pabucfan… i guess because he went to the playoffs and probowl4 out of the previous 5 years.
September 7th, 2018 at 9:56 pm
@miken: spot on
