Carving Station

September 30th, 2018

Had Bucs’ number.

It was almost sickening to watch, Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky, at best an average quarterback, just carved the Bucs’ secondary apart like a roasted chicken.

Trubisky came into today’s game with a grand total of nine touchdowns in 19 games. He rolled up 66 percent of that pregame TD total through this afternoon in just three quarters.

The way Trubisky spoke about it, there was nothing Bears coach Matt Nagy, who called the plays, could do that was bad.

“It felt good out there,” Trubisky said. “Everything Coach Nagy was calling was working, and we just kept rolling. Like I said, it was the O-line. They gave me time. They were moving guys. We got the run game going, and I was just back there, and I was seeing it well, just staying calm in the pocket, and guys were getting open. It was an awesome game plan.”

Nagy mentioned in his press conference that the Bucs’ secondary did exactly what he thought they would do, but Nagy didn’t go into a deep explanation of what that was.

It sure smells as if there may be a book out there on Mike Smith’s defense. If so, that would explain a lot of things.

Are you seriously just now coming to this realization? This was probably before he got here. Lol. This is an historically bad defense that is just a comedy of errors. Who is holding this team accountable?

  2. NPRSageBoy Says:

Trubisky looked like Fitz carving up the Saints.

  3. EA Says:

As a buc fan im sick of watching this garbage going back to Lovie and beyond.
There better be some changes made, they will probably play a decent game against the Falcons but turn around and be their bad self again.
Bring father Dungy back in the front office, we need that culture change from the very very top.

  4. Mike Evans Goat Says:

How much did the “Fire Schiano” billboard cost?

  5. Lamarcus Says:

No it is easier that then to speculate if Msmith playbook is out there. The Bears ran just 4 plays on offense on us. It was wash, rinse, and repeat and the Bucs still couldn’t stop it

  6. thunderchunkyPA Says:

Once again, Koetter brings back the SAME staff on D ( other then Buckner) that was the WORST D in the NFL last year, and we are surprised they are LAST again?

  7. Not there yet Says:

That book is dusty and old, bucs running a defense that was at its peak when aaron Rodgers was like in high school. If you notice everyone is putting up big numbers in the first half then that idiot defensive coordinator has to go in at halftime and change his entire approach. Head coach is a hard job tough decisions to make. Glazers won’t make dirk fire anyone but that just means at the end of the season you will have to pay for that decision with your job.

  8. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs were Trubisky Thanksgiving dinner

  9. Buc believer Says:

    We just weren’t Bears ready…

  10. Dewey Selmon Says:

I don’t think if’s fair to call someone average after 20 games. Especially after he just threw 6 td’s on you.

  11. LakeLand Says:

Mitch Trubisky were a garbage QB before this game

    9 TD, 10 INT

  12. JimmyJack Says:

Mike Smith got outcoached so badly today it wasn’t funny. It was worse then when AP run the entire field while our D looked like they didn’t realize AP is a good rusher.

And honestly the adjustment didn’t even come at halftime. It’s almost like Mike Smith gave up before his team did.

    Smith, thanks for nothing dude.

  13. Rashad Says:

He’s going to be garbage after this game too. I get tired of no name QBs trashing us. It never fails. Struggling qb always look like hall of Famers when they play us and then going back to looking like trash afterwards.

  14. Season Is Over Says:

Koetter’s defense of Smith and the local media’s failure to hold this team accountable to anything is what is truly troubling.

  15. JimmyJack Says:

You can’t employ a coach in this league that is absolutely helpless to stop Mith Trubisky. This just goes without saying. And Mitch is not the loan example here as has been pointed out above

  16. JJV Says:

Our defensive lowlights will be used for generations from powder puff to the pro level to teach players how not to play defense. At least our game film will benefit others in a positive way. Take heart Bucs, your legacy will live on.

  17. Kansas95Buc Says:

Just…heartbreaking. makes me wonder what the defensive players are thinking, I’m surprised nobody is calling for change

  18. Joseph Mamma Says:

Their average QB played a lot better than both our average QB’s did. And their average QB has yet to start a whole season. He actually has a shot to be better than average.

  19. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs secondary ran around lost, fell down, busted coverage and got beat all day long. The rookies are in a tough spot – take Ronde for example, he played a few special teams play his rookie year, I’m not sure he got in at corner, or if he did it was extremely limited. You can’t throw a bunch of rookies out there and expect success. Hopefully they improve as the year goes along – and I think they will.

  20. unbelievable Says:

If Koetter won’t fire mike smith then Licht needs to do it.

Obviously you cant install a whole new defense in mid season, but you can get rid of this crap quarters zone coverage which leaves massive holes at every level and constantly has our weakest defensive back covering the fastest opposing receiver.

It is insulting to fans and pathetic to watch.

  21. Wesley Says:

Mitch Trubinsky isn’t even average, that’s the saddest part.

  22. JJV Says:

There is not a single QB in the entire NFL that will not carve up this defense. I’m starting to wonder if they would still do it with on hand tied behind their back or blindfolded?

  23. PSLBob Says:

To add insult to injury, no TV coverage where I am (Dolphin country), so had to listen on the radio. For some reason Gene Deckerhoff was late getting to the stadium and TJ Rives substituted to call plays until he arrived. Rives did an outstanding job to help visualize the plays. Then Gene arrived. Fitzpatrick drops back and makes a long throw. It’s caaaaaught! – 1st down Bucs at the 11 yard line. Nice catch by Desean Watson. Then he repeated Desean Watson at least twice more before Dave Moore had to mention that the player is actually Desean Jackson. At that point, I was fed up with the Bucs play anyway and just couldn’t take it anymore. We need a new D coordinator and a new radio voice for the Bucs.

  24. Waterboy Says:

The book on Mike Smith’s defense was written years ago, before he was fired in Atlanta.

  25. BucEmUp Says:

Please just stop. What do you mean it smells Like? There isn’t a book, it’s just a simple paragraph or two. SMITH and Lovie both run CONSTANT cover two all game every game. They will give you maybe two looks of single high safety a game if your lucky and the corners have to sign in their contract that they will NEVER make ANY legal contact with the wife receivers. The linebackers and safties will NEVER disguise blitzes at the line of scrimmage. MIKE SMITH CANNOT COACH AT ANY PROFESSIONAL LEVEL!!!!

  26. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Mike Smith has been outcoached waaaay too many times to keep his job. He sits in his box while his players try to give each other pep talks on the sidelines. We should have been blitzing that quarterback over and over again hunting for a turnover. Instead we just sat on our heels. Trubisky actually missed a few throws too. One for sure would have been another TD. It’s just pathetic and it’s that these players aren’t buying in and that Smith isn’t coaching ANYONE up. It’s time to cut ties.

  27. JimmyJack Says:

Guys I have a question. Can we recover from this? Is it possible?

  28. Sweeptheleg Says:

Lmao wait till the Atlanta game. Lol

    Gonna be really ugly.

Julio 200 yards and Ridley 150.
    Atlanta 45 Bucs 14.

Winston 2 ints while FSU idiots start blaming the air or anything else to protect their crotch grabbing stupid QB.

  29. JimmyJack Says:

    BigPopa….well said.

  30. Sweeptheleg Says:

    Jimmy jack

No they don’t recover. Season over. Guareenteed. This organization does not have the heart or talent to turn things around.

    6-10.

  31. JimmyJack Says:

If Bill Belicheck has taught us any one thing it’s that coaching matters. And our sucks. Sucks on a historical level too.

  32. JimmyJack Says:

Rewind 2 weeks. We we’re on top of the world and owning the highlight.

Now we want our coach fired………What the f*** just f***in happened?

  33. Sweeptheleg Says:

Been watching this sh it show since 1987 and other than 4-5 years of success this team is and mostly always have been a complete embarrassment and dumpster fire to the NFL.

You have to really try to be this bad for this long. That takes effort. I don’t even get mad anymore at these kinds of games. I laugh and sit back and just watch the storm.

    It’s hilarious really.

  34. JJV Says:

“Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit drinking”

  35. Conte Piscatelli Says:

    Sweeptheleg

While I agree Atlanta will light is up, they may be the only defense worse than ours at the moment. They are the first team in decades to score 36+ points in back to back games and lose them both. I’m looking for an arena league score in that one.

  36. Bucamania Says:

What happened is Pittsburgh beat this team up on Monday night and instead of responding like a good team does – this team went in the tank.

  37. JimmyJack Says:

Sweep what are you talking about? They are trying to be bad? These players aren’t trying to do anything. I betcha they barely practiced this week. They kicked their feet up and watched film with their iPads I betcha.

This team ain’t trying. And the sure as hell don’t care. That’s the worst part. F*** you Bucs

  38. JimmyJack Says:

This team isn’t trying to do anything. They don’t care. They didn’t even practice this week and it showed. They aren’t working to win these games they’re just putting in their 16 until they can get 6 months off. F*** you Bucs

  39. JJV Says:

“Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit amphetamines”

  40. Cobraboy Says:

Koetter won’t fire Smith because they are buddies. Glazers need to do it.

But as bad as the defense was, the offense was no better. That “great” OL looked like crap, and each and every OL looked terrible. And I don’t understand what tey see in Benenoch. He couldn’t even slow anyone down.

Possible the worst overall game I’ve seen a Bucs team play since they quit on Schiano and Raheem. Or maybe worse.

    I thought they’d lose by 2 scores, not 7.

  41. SchwiftyBuc Says:

What’s really sad is that the Bucs had a chance to steal Vic Fangio away from the bears this offseason. But nope, Dirk refused to fire his best buddy Mike Smith.

Not a doubt in my mind that any of the top 10 or 15 DC’s in the league could field at the very least an average defense with the talent we have. I’m highly skeptical of guys like Isiah Johnson, MJ Stewart, Jordan Whitehead and their lack of ability in coverage. Also Brent Grimes is just too old, father time finally caught up with him.

But with the players we have in our front 7, there’s absolutely no excuse for the D being as wretched and as awful as it is.

  42. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Hey Realist…..looks like the “sheep” want your Smitty gone….

  43. Mike Johnson Says:

The BUCS are ranked last Defensively in the NFl. And last means…
You suck to holy hell and beyond. I’ve said it all year, this team wil go as far as its Defense..not offense will take them. Don’t take einstein to see..We ain’t goin very far…Not this season.

  44. JimmyJack Says:

Cobra it seemed to me that the Oline quit out there today. Flat out quit.

And yes, Benenchot is and has been awful all year. He either needs to be on the field after the bye week plain solid football where they need to put Evan Smith in there already.

    Caleb was a disgrace today

  45. LakeLand Says:

    Derwin James

    26 Tackles, 20 Solo Tackles
    1 Int
    3 Sacks
    6 PD
    5 QB hits

I have always said that this Beast from Polk County is more than a Safety!

  46. JimmyJack Says:

So when is the football game? I haven’t seen one all week

  47. Buc believer Says:

Mike Smith sucks more than Jenna Jameson on a “movie” shoot.

  48. Riggz Says:

Bring back Schiano to run the defense

  49. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

lakeland right on, huge miss just like missing on laremy tunsil and not drafting lael collins in 6th round or drafting a kicker in rd 2 or passing on every good rb starting in the nfl right now in the past 2 years

  50. D-Rome Says:

Cobraboy, I agree with you on Benonoch. He’s a liability out there and he’s been one for a very long time. I thought he might turned a corner this year but it’s just as bad.

  51. ATrain Says:

Ok so injuries backfield means we need more pressure up front

Crappy QB force him to make quick throws

DLine pressure and BLITZ THE CRAP OITBOF HIM

Did Mike Smith watch us play the Steelers

I get the injuries but Smith is in a play book from 20 years ago

  52. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    @Lakeland

Not saying Derwin wouldn’t have been a great pick for us. But I honestly can say I don’t think he’d be doing that good in this god awful scheme.

  53. Sweeptheleg Says:

I told you fans you were all gonna be really disappointed if you expected better than 6-10.

Can’t win with this defense and as long as mike smith is here you can expect this kind of crap.

Get used to it cause it’s gonna be this way ALL SEASON lol.

  54. LakeLand Says:

    SchwiftyBuc

    I agree 100%

In this scheme he would be playing deep, 20 yards away from the line

  55. JimmyJack Says:

Atrain…. …..You cannot change Mike Smith’s defense. So long as he’s here we will run the same few looks.

  56. JimmyJack Says:

Sweep we are still 2-2 buddy. Don’t forget, it’s important

  57. SkBucsFan Says:

It’s not all bad. We still have a better record than the Browns.

  58. JimmyJack Says:

I’m 18 beers in and I can guarantee that I have a better idea on how the Falcons will try to attack us than Mike Smith does

  59. NPRSageBoy Says:

Two quick questions; has Mike Smith been fired yet? Has America’s Turnover Machine thrown any more INTs?

  60. Jeffbuc Says:

I’m over this spend countless dollars on food for away game parties at the house and for tickets. I’m over it you can towel letting a coach be the worst at his job for three years. The qb we played today had 9 career touchdowns in 15 games he threw for 6 today. And it wasn’t like he was just dropping dimes. Every time he dropped back there was a wide open receiver or runningback or tight end. Why wouldn’t your game plan be man to man and blitz the hell out of him. Is he that arrogant that he thought his base man cover 2 zone would stop him. I swear I’m a lifelong Bucs fan but if he isn’t fired or demoted I will no longer watch this team. I’m at my wits end. We seem to get a lot of back up qbs to play against us where we should eat them alive and then they have career games against us. That wasn’t nfl football I saw today that was an embarrassment. Players had no clue what they were doing in coverage. That all comes down to bad coaching. Whoever calls in to the Dirk Koetter show better be the first thing they bring up. That was humiliating to watch. I really think I could do a better job of coaching the defense and it should never be that way. Koetter grow a pair and fire your buddy.

  61. ATLBuc Says:

    @Rod Munch
You can’t throw a bunch of rookies out there and expect success.
With good coaching last year New Orleans CB Lattimore was rookie of the year but with our coaching our rookie corners regress

  62. JimmyJack Says:

Jeff I agree with every statement you just made. What angers me the most is the team just doesn’t care……I’m beginning to question why I still do.

  63. JabooBuc Says:

I like to think of myself as an eternal optimist always looking for the bright side of things. After today’s game I would say it appears that the entire team all got drunk together before the game. Nobody was left out, even the coaches.
That is something we can build on.

  64. Day1BucFan Says:

Joe, can you write an article on potential trade value for Fitz, Brate and/or Hump? We have more offensive talent on the bench and could use a db, or two or three.

  65. JimmyJack Says:

The only reason to keep M.Smith is an excuse. But I thought there were no excuses? What happened to that!

  66. JimmyJack Says:

Jaboo…..I was wondering that myself. I wonder what the idiots on this team, that prooved they don’t care today, were doing last night in downtown Chicago?

Their play basically answers the question

  67. JabooBuc Says:

JimmyJack – The only excuse for this game would be they all got wasted together or were all too happy about their unexpected record.

The only true positive about this, seriously, is that they are coming off a short week and they do have a lot of injuries to overcome. I know people will say that all teams deal with injuries which is certainly true. However, what is odd about the Bucs is that it seems like all of their injuries have hit the secondary. Grimes, VH3, Whitehead, Conte, Davis, Williams… all have missed time due to injury. In Smith’s defense, and that’s hard to do, they’ve been having to cut and paste this secondary together using mostly rookies.

Normally i hate the bye week coming this early but this team clearly needs the time. We need to get healthy quick.

  68. Llokii Says:

Rip off the bandaid. Season is done with this defense. 3 years and only degradation of the secondary. Cut bait and begin anew.

  69. Customer87 Says:

Mike smith can’t coach my peewee team he should be ashamed to even act like a coach if I was him wouldn’t be able to get on the plane with those players who I let down so badly today

  70. TonyC Says:

“Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit drinking”

True. I’ts had to stay hopeful with this team.

  71. DBS Says:

All I want to hear or see tomorrow is Mike Smith is gone. At least then I will feel we have some kind of hope.

  72. JabooBuc Says:

Derwin James continues to kill it as predicted. He was an all out stud Safety and coupled with Evans would have given us two play makers in the defensive backfield.

I get the Vea pick and thought he looked good today. However, what good is it to have a stout run defense when the other team can torch us in the passing game.

Derwin has been strong in pass defense and in run support, again, as predicted.

  73. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Maybe, JUST MAYBE, Derwin’s defensive coaches know how to use him.

  74. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    @JabooBuc

Lol if we drafted him he wouldn’t be used to his utmost ability. He’d be getting torn up on a regular basis just like the rest of our secondary in this god awful secondary.

  75. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Sorry I’m drunk, in this god awful “scheme”

  76. Big Daddy 58 Says:

As a lifelong Buc fan I was remiss that I was out of the viewing area this week for the game. However ,as I tracked it on gamecast, it was almost surreal that the Bears were piling up points faster than money at a Jerry Lewis telethon.
I wasnt sure the Bucs would win in Chicago mainly because of Chicagos pass rush and the fact that three rookies started in the bucs secondary.I was hopeful that they would at least compete.
I have seen alot of bucs football over the years and rarely missed a game ,at the stadium and on tv.
This has got to be the worst defense I have seen, ever!
I find it very difficult to believe its a personell issue as there are alot of talented men on that side of the ball.
So,someone tell me where does this egg belong??
So much hope before the season and guarded optimism during the two wins, but this is the best the coaching staff can come up with defense wise .
Mitch Trubisky looked like Brady out there and at times hit targets so wide open it was rediculous.
Im done venting im going to throw myself off the plank.

  77. Rod Munch Says:

ATLBuc – What I said earlier, and probably just edited it down not to bore everyone, was you don’t throw a couple of 2nd round corners and a 4th round safety out there and expect them to do well. Lattimore was the 11th pick in the draft, and yes, high 1st rounders, generally do go out and start right away. Regardless if you have 3 rookie DB’s playing huge minutes (and yes, I know Whitehead didn’t play today, talking in generalities) on any team then generally it’s going to be a disaster.

For example, the guy I wanted was Ward, and then James. Ward has played quite well, but he was picked much earlier than people thought he would be, so nothing the Bucs could have done about it. James was the obvious pick but the Bucs took the route of taking a run stuffing 3-4 NT despite the fact they run a 4-3, a pick that makes no sense – plus rookie interior defensive lineman rarely do anything in year one, so you can’t count on production.

So instead Licht goes into the year knowing that VH3 is coming off injury and was benched before that – that Grimes is 44 years old – and you have Chris Conte and Ryan Smith and a bunch of rookies. The only guy in the defensive backfield you could really count on is Justin Evans, and even he had a bad day today. When a GM gives a team that rotation of players in that condition, he’s basically giving the coaches a big middle finger.

  78. Conte Piscatelli Says:

    @rod munch

Sadly, I think the rookies have been outplaying Grimes, I mean we won 2 games, Grimes comes back playing that 15 yrd cushion and we lose the last two.

  79. unbelievable Says:

Yup. Grimes has absolutely sucked since coming back.
