“You’ve Got To Have A Chess Mindset”

August 22nd, 2018

Talented x-factor ready to breakout or young player far away in his development?

Noah Spence appears to be both, based on Joe’s chats at One Buc Palace today.

“You’ve got to have a chess mindset,” defensive line coach Brentson Buckner said of Spence today, as he stressed that Spence needs to mature and “grow mentally.”

Now that’s not Buckner bashing Spence. Buckner is quick to say experience teaches and Spence only has 22 games under his belt in two seasons. He’s also played most of those with a significant shoulder injury.

But Spence has been through three NFL training camps and it is time for the light to go on — now.

Joe wonders whether Buckner is a bit disappointed in the mental side of Spence’s game. Joe’s gut says yes (and it clamors for Abe’s Place boneless wings).

However, Joe has optimism for Spence. It seems like he got his share of nothing-special coaching under former D-line coach Jay Hayes, and Spence was adamant to Joe today that he’s healthy and raring to go.

But will Spence get enough reps to develop mentally through the season? He will not be a starter. Regardless, Spence remains a big x-factor for a team coming off a woeful 17-sack season.

Run past tackle, tackle QB – that’s all Noah needs to worry about

OBP is full of mentally weak players and coaches!!!!

    surprise surprise buckner!!!!!

    @Joe

“He will not be a starter.”

You are obviously not superstitious. LOL I wouldn’t disagree with your observation but I fear saying it out loud.

The way our OL have been going down this week how do we know the injury bug won’t hit our DL forcing Noah into the lineup?

Yeah a lot of injuries…but after the OL who would dare say we couldn’t get hit in another area.

  4. buddy Says:

Chess I laugh at that notion. What a damn joke. These guys would rather play a PING PONG tournament. Why was the suck off the head coach equipment manager in the front row?? Know your role.

  5. Lamarcus Says:

Spence is just not good. He just flashes sometimes and people think he is good. He needs to have the coach try something different with him. But……

He just gets manhandled. And it’s looks too easy

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Aah yes, I notice that the optimists are out in force again today. 813bucboi, Larmarcus, buddy … why do you bother? Bucs could win the Super Bowl & you’d still bitch that they just lucked out. There are so many factors involved in winning & losing that no one can predict with any surety how a season will turn out. Enjoy the ride for heaven’s sake, or hop on another train that’ll get you where you apparently want to go.

I admittedly haven’t been Noah’s biggest fan (the Bucs entire 2016 draft … VHIII, Spence, Aguayo, R. Smith, Benenoch, Bond, Vitale … still has me shaking my head) BUT I’ll give Spence credit for hanging tough & working hard. He may only be used in spot duty this year (3rd downs, etc) but if he can put some pressure on the QB, play the run decent & add 5 or 6 sacks to the TEAM I’ll be real happy.

I like Buck’s chess analogy but think it’s more appropriate applied to the coaches (as they respond to opponents’ moves or try to force an opponent to respond to theirs) than to individual players. Maybe not though. Maybe Buck’s saying that you have to be flexible in terms of what your opponent is trying to do & respond accordingly.

  7. webster Says:

Come on guys. Buckner was not saying he is not happy with spence mentality. He is saying spence needs to develop mentally ie knowing what the offense is trying to do to you and counter it. Due to spence low amount of reps since he has been in the league has not afforded that aspect of his game to grow. That is all.

  8. webster Says:

So much about pass rushing is setting up your opponent for rush moves later in the quarter, half, game ie chess

  9. Buc50 Says:

Most people here have NO idea who these guys are.

  10. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I rewatched the Titans game and Spence had some pressures and a half sack. He definitely flashed but he wasn’t as consistent or dominant that you would want him to be vs 2nd or 3rd stringers.
I think what Buckner is referring to is the way Spence sequences his moves and sets them up at what times.
I think Spence is trouble athletically for Tackles but he is predictable to.them.

Another thing that worries me is what JPP said yesterday in his interview. It was hardly Robert Ayers saying Spence was destined for 15 sacks.
He basically said he is a good pass rusher and working at getting better at run stopping. Then said he consoles Spence about not much playing time or attention.
That just seemed weird to me he would say that.

I still think Spence can be a double digit sack speed rusher if he gets the opportunity and stays healthy.
    Go BUCS!!

  11. Mitch Says:

Hopefully he doesn’t become the “Kenny Bell” of the dline … undefendable in August … invisible in games

  12. Darin Says:

I hope Big Buck says the same thing to Dirk. Or one day it could be him playing chess

  13. ✨INSIRED✨ Says:

Coach Buckner IS e man to bring Spence out of puberty!

He needs to get out of his own way… And once his “balls drop” he will be a first date, front line certifiable nightmare!!!

    And then “CHECK MATE!”

  14. Bobby M. Says:

Spence is an 8 sack guy….at best. His role is limited and he’s still lite in weight as well as injury prone. I think he evolves to be a Greg Spires or Stylez White type player but he’s no JPP that can move up and down a line. He’s a tad slow and a tad lite…

  15. DB55 Says:

I was surprised that Spence didn’t get in the game until late. I was just sitting there wondering how long JPP would play and wondered why Spence hadn’t shown up.

  16. SteelStudBuc Says:

If they use him sparingly and carry a lead into 3rd and 4th quarters… Spence could be unleashed as a speed rusher when teams are desperate.
    Here’s to hoping…

  17. German Buc Says:

Defense, you just became my favorite poster! Thank you for calling out these ‘fans’!

  18. James Walker Says:

Let’s all cheer for the first USA chess challenger for the World Championship since Bobby Fischer in 1972! You go get him Fabiano Caruana and destroy the Norwegian World Champion Magnus Carlsen in November and make our country PROUD!!!

  19. rocketmail sign in Says:

Ir is really good and helpful for those who want to have best tactics in opening Chess games in easiest way. Open games tend to be dominated by tactical, rather than strategic play.

  20. Buc50 Says:

Caruana needs to play accurately. Magnus is all about precision…tactical displays and flash will get you embarrassed on the world stage.

  21. 813bucboi Says:

    DR

a SB win is all we want……wouldn’t hear a complaint from me….

but we could go 3-13 and you would still sing the praise of this staff and blame everyone but the coaches……

hold coaches accountable or haul a$$ with them!!!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  22. James Walker Says:

Caruana has nerves of steel. He is the only man on earth that can beat Carlsen. But, he has to do it cleanly. If they have a rapid playoff due to a tie Carlsen will win.

  23. Reach87 Says:

What DF said^^^. This is a new year, we are 2-0 (I get it, its the pre-season, means nothing, blah..blah….blah), we have a better roster in many positions, lots to be optimistic about (or at least not automatically, thread-hijacking negative at every opportunity) and yet we have fans that hate everything about the team. Please leave. Go root for the Eagles (SB or bust, right?) and come back when you get your guys in (owner, head coach, trainer, QB) place. Go Bucs!
