Waiting On Doctors

August 21st, 2018

Few details on injuries.

Ugly day at Bucs practice today.

Not only was Bucs safety Justin Evans hurt early in practice today, the big injury was left tackle Donovan Smith. The ironman of the offensive line, Smith has only missed the second half of a game (at New Orleans last year) starting every game at left tackle since he was drafted in 2015.

After practice, Bucs coach Dirk Koetter had few details. Of course, he spoke just after practice and had yet to consult with any trainers or doctors to learn the extent of Smith’s injury.

It is believed to be a knee injury, but that has not been confirmed. There was some speculation that Smith was — in the football vernacular — rolled up on, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Smith was apparently on the backside of a run play when he suffered his leg injury.

Below is Koetter speaking about Smith’s injury.

    Left tackles aren’t important.

  2. ChanEpic Says:

Get well soon Troops! We need you out there.

  3. AlabamaBucFan Says:

Just when I was starting to get excited about our chances to make the playoffs, this happens.

  4. Marc Says:

Don’t just glaze over the Evans injury, Joe. The guy was carted off and that could be a huge blow to our D.

  5. Chris watson Says:

But i thought the O-line wasnt important joe??? so this doesnt even matter! go RUN FOR 1500 yard peyton barber! “anyone can block if you got arms”– joe bucs fan

I need that same energy joe dont turn into an o-line guy now, our back up is the same right?

  6. AmericasEnabler Says:

Hope both are ok soon! Tandy might do ok with this “REVAMPED WOW! saaaaarcasm” dline.

  7. Joe Says:

Bucs haven’t said one word about his injury. No one even knows what it is outside of Bucs employees, who are clammed up about this.

Nothing against Evans but this team is screwed without their left tackle. They are not even healthy at right tackle much less right guard.

  8. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Maybe we should wait on the report before we run up the white flag

  9. Joe Says:

But i thought the O-line wasnt important joe???

    Joe has never suggested otherwise.

  10. Durango 95 Says:

Joe this no time for following protocol and pussy footin’ around. You need to bust into that trainers office slam your fist on the desk and demand to know the severity of these injuries.

Seriously, this is torture. I need to go home get seriously drunk and pass out in a drunken stupor.

Don’t feel like getting arrested. 🙂

Possible he just hyper extended the knee. Hope the results are in soon. The main thing is to be ready by opening day.k

  13. Bird Says:

    ^^

    Pretty fun

Joe – ask pretty please with sprinkles on top.

  14. Bucsfanman Says:

Good reporting Joe! Lets hope these aren’t too serious. I agree about LT. Protecting Fitz or Jameis is more important.
Still, sad to see these guys go down.

  15. D-Rome Says:

If this is serious and Smith is out for the year this would be a situation where, in my mind, the coaching staff *could* get a mulligan for the year.

  16. Bird Says:

These would be 2 huge injuries. Fingers crossed they are not severe. I mean they are down way to many guys this year.

  17. AlteredEgo Says:

Why am I thinking of Fitz….

  18. Joel Says:

I’d love to see a complete of injuries this team has had since it started training camp. It would be astounding. And a clear sign something needs to change. The 3 week Vea calf injury is a joke.

Clean house in the medical and training staff. IMMEDIATELY.

Our players aren’t adequately trained and never correctly treated. Don’t believe me? Look at the return times from SIMPLE injuries.

The Wentz injury he got hit from the front. There isn’t a noticeable limp with his injury either and he walked off the field. I am hoping it is just either a bad bruise in the back of the knee…and/or just sprained it a bit worst case. The main fear is tears as we pray that there is no tear in the ligaments. He seemed to be able to put some weight on his leg despite the limp, so we will see.

Marpet also left practice due to injury….

  23. SOEbuc Says:

OMG!!!! You know what this is people? It’s a punishment from the football gods because we were jumping for joy when other teams we have to play all stars were getting hurt.

  24. Bucsfan77 Says:

for years I think the strength and conditioning coaches should be fired. our injuries has always been a downfall for us

  25. Mike Johnson Says:

Some idiot here said left tackles are not important. Tell that to teams who win divisions and superbowls.

  26. 813bucboi Says:

    D-ROME

    I disagree….

I think the glazers want to see how they perform when faced with adversity….if they keep coming out flat and cant score in the red zone combined with lousy defense, clean house is in effect….

plus good coaches can scheme around injuries….chip the DE with a RB or TE….line a TE over the DE to help out the LT….

pamphile looked decent at LT in tenn….looks even better now….

dirk used the injury excuse card last year….I doubt the glazer buy it this year….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  27. 813bucboi Says:

    I agree….
medical staff needs to be looked into…..

injuries will happen….but the recovery time for bucs players always seem to be off by a few weeks…..

  28. johnnybuc Says:

i really don’t think smith injury was the biggest one, obviously the severity of the injuries will determine that but if both smith and evans miss significant time i think evans is the bigger blow, just based on the simple fact that jameis isn’t going to be here for 3 weeks anyways, the offense was going to struggle with or without smith. that’s what happens when you have fitzpatrick as a starter. but if bucs want any shot of winning a game without jameis they need the defense to carry them and they may have just lost arguably their most irreplaceable player . no one in that safety room can do what evans can do to his ability . and with the teams we will be playing first 3 weeks we all better pray these injuries are nothing serious or that the d line gets it figured out quick because better believe the saints will be ready to expose that secondary week 1 .

  29. Casey Morgan Says:

Idiots. You can get best trainers and strength coaches in the world and if 2 or 3 football players land on your knee/ankle at the wrong angle you are going to be injured…

  30. Greg Says:

Maybe we can trade Jameis (Americas trade bait) to a team for a good left tackle. Smith is average and thanks to Light we have no depth and we all know the Glaziers aren’t paying close to 30 million a year to a guy Raymond James wont even allow on the Stadium. They might have also threatened to drop their endorsements if Jameis is to continue in Tampa.

  31. Greg Says:

Right tackle Demar Dotson has been plagued with injuries and coming off a surgery. We have no back up right tackle or left tackle with any talent. Were weak at guard as well. Great job light lets draft a kicker in the 2nd round. Lets draft a tight end when Brate was leading the nfl in TDs. Lets draft another soft undersized runningback like Jeremy McNichols, Simms, and Jones just to be forced to put our season in the hands of unproven undrafted Barber. Not hanging Koetter out to dry at all lol.

  32. Eric Says:

Might be fortunate that JW is out the first three games.

  33. buddy Says:

#NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!! Que the excuses from #KluelessKoetter.

  34. Dapostman Says:

I never understood why these O linemen never wear knee braces. They wear them in college. Probably mandatory. It’s not like they need to run a 40 yard dash either. Most blocks are done within 3 yards of the line of scrimmage.

    #Get After It!

  35. Jimmy T Says:

    Greg,
SERIOUSLY? Trade Jameis ? FOOLISH but I figured it was only a matter of time before someone w NO CLUE would want to trade Jameis for a Tackle!! Just ridiculous

  36. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Joe

Do you know if Buc’s OL routinely wear knee braces to protect them in case they get rolled up?

I know some teams demand their OL wear them for protection. If Donovan was wearing one perhaps that will help to minimize the damage to his knee.
