More On The Jordan Whitehead Impact

August 14th, 2018

Class-shaker

Joe already has written plenty about the apparent profound impact Thursday’s bone-crushing hitting of rookie safety Jordan Whitehead had on this Bucs team.

But it runs even deeper.

Joe chatted 1-on-1 with rookie cornerback Carlton Davis about it, and the Bucs’ second second-round pick this year said Whitehead raised the bar and sent a jolt through the rookie class, which also includes second-round cornerback M.J. Stewart.

“It jacked us up. We always talk about competing out there and getting each other hyped by making plays, him going out there and doing it and not just talking about it really, you know, I respect him more as as football player,” Davis said. “We all saw it. I’m still learning about these guys and watching everything they bring to the table, rookies and vets, and trying to at least match that.”

Joe still remains stunned that it was a rookie, a fourth-round pick, who sort oft temporarily set a new tone for the Tampa Bay defense this season. Very cool, and still a little bit concerning that it wasn’t a veteran.

It’s pretty evident Jordan has been coached up by cousin Darrelle Revis.

  2. Steve in Mad Beach Says:

It was 1 preseason game so let’s not anoint the guy as the next John Lynch quite yet!

Fingers crossed that this guy is the real deal.

    Go Bucs!

  3. El_Buc941 Says:

Joe I have a feeling this draft class is going to change everything for this defense. From Whiteheads bonecrushing mentality to the live to see another play of MJ Stewart to the surprise Carlton III has been so far. Now it Vita Veas turn to show us what made him our 1st round pick.

captain creme puff will suck the life out all rookies and newly acquired free agents prior to week one to ensure the basement streak does not get broken. it’s a buc life and we have 9 years of proof / history.

  5. stpetebucsfan Says:

He was a four star recruit out of high school. He rushed for over a thousand yards…was a team leader in tackles when playing defense.

At Pitt he was an impact player from his freshman year. He is simply one of those players who has the ability to set a mood. Let’s hope he doesn’t hurt himself trying to inflict all that pain and let’s hope he can figure out how to control the number of penalties he may get.

  6. Anonymous Says:

    Anyone is better than Conte.

  7. GrudenForPresident Says:

1 preseason game or not this kid has been properly coached up. not only does he hit hard he hits hard within the parameters of the new rules and that is what blows my mind about this kid. you know what they say, you play how you practice and I think this team proved the theory to be correct last year. Albeit not in a positive way. All three of these kids are serious about wanting to be great and are willing to put in the work to get there. Bottom line, we have the talent on this team, now its up to the coaches to tie it all together and its up to Licht to shore up whatever holes we have left through FA and last rd. of cuts. Lets go boys this year is the year. I can totally see us snagging one of the wildcard spots this year!! Go Bucs!!

  8. JimmyJack Says:

I like the quote from Carlton and I think we will be liking his impact a lot sooner, if the Dolphins game was an accurate indicator.

  9. JimmyJack Says:

St Pete I don’t know why you’re talking about pentalties.

Because if you are playing good defense in the NFL in 2018, most likely it is a penalty.

  11. feelthepewterpower Says:

Our backfield could be set for years if all three, plus hargreaves and evans pan out!

    Yo ho yo ho
    It’s T-Max’s life for me

    He rarely gets dressed
    He’s always depressed
    Mpm’s basement is a sight

    Even though he’s a boy
    He can’t stand McCoy

It’s T-Max’s life for me!!!! Hey!

  13. JimmyJack Says:

Feelthepewterpower….. I hate to break it to you but the chances for Hargreaves panning out are diminishing by the day. The guy may get back on the field and be OK(which is the best he’s ever been) for us but my prediction is that his rodeo is just about over with the Bucs.

  14. adam from ny Says:

i wish someone would put together a tape of all these hard hits everyone is raving about

  15. adam from ny Says:

har-grievances is injured again and kickin back smokin’ some of that good buddah

  16. rrsrq Says:

JohnLynch didn’t shine until year 3, neither did Ronde, so if they can have impact as a rookies, that will speak well of this class, but it still has to get done with the front seven

  17. SOEbuc Says:

I’m really hoping this guy becomes the real deal for the bucs DBs and he was making very nice plays all over, but they were also mostly against Dolphins 2nd and 3rd stringers and Osweiler. The fact he played that entire game was so pathetic. But let’s keep the faith. GO BUCS!

  18. Not there yet Says:

It’s not really concerning. Conte and Tandy have had plenty of time to make their Mark on the defense I’m hoping that we are turning the page to the next chapter of the defense.

  19. BigMacAttack Says:

Sure it was one game, but guys don’t play the way Whitehead did Thursday by accident. One good hit maybe, but three? I don’t think so. Licht and Company saw something here. He’s got game and where he can take it remains to be seen. He’s fast and strong. He can play multiple positions, including running back. He has great instincts and can probably return kicks. My question is how the hell Licht got him in the 4’th round. This kid is like Chris Godwin, another steal and someone to keep your eyes on. Be advised: This was not a fluke.
Well played by the Scouting staff and Licht.

  20. Jeffbuc Says:

Everyone tmax post. I just envision will Ferrell yelling ma the meatloaf. And her yelling back. Son are you online again sucking the life out of the comment section of joe bucs fan. It’s been nine years son.

  21. BigMacAttack Says:

Looking at this picture I see the 3 Musketeers!!!

  22. Bucballbaby84 Says:

Hey Joe, I’m ecstatic that it’s a 4th rounder who is family of a legend setting the tone. This team could go undefeated this year with the talent they got! It’s up to them to make it happen all 4 quarters of every game! Go Bucs! Straight DOGS!

  23. German Buc Says:

By the way: Kwon was a fourth rounder, too. It seems you can get pretty good leadership back there…

  24. Alanbucsfan Says:

Quality draft picks build championship teams- be a little more patient, Bucs fans, it’s a long road from the garbage heap, but Licht is getting it done, despite some stumbles…

  25. Bob in Valrico Says:

Good to see Licht focusing on the defense, hope our new young players help turn this defense around. It would be great to have a tenacious defense to go with a
    potent offense. Go Bucs!

  26. Bucsfanman Says:

ONE game guys. Lets let him string together a couple of more OK?! Our standards are so low that ANY impact stands out.
He looked good. If he continues to play that way, we might be sitting on a deep group of safeties.

  27. Owlykat Says:

If Vea and Stevie T will come thru to stop the run for us and absorb double teams and our three super backfield rookies along with VHIII pay off this year, and Smitty for the first time gets creative and drops the LovieLooserZoneDefense and adapts his defense to the strengths of his players, yes, we could make the playoffs this year and Licht will be the reason why!
