Overall I’ve moved up somewhat to ‘Middle of the Pack’ in my thoughts about Jason Licht, largely because he FINALLY did something to improve the TALENT level on our defense. Lots of ‘hits’ but also lots of ‘misses’ to go along with them.
Right now I want to see Licht fix what I see as the 3 major remaining deficiencies on our team: Veteran OLineman, veteran RB & veteran CB all evolving from a lack of adequate experienced depth in those position groups.
Licht leaves gaping holes on the roster every year. Last year our secondary and rbs were pathetic. And the lack of depth on the oline hurt as well. Dline was not good either, but before the season there was promise there. Somehow VH3 is starting again this year, you’ve gotta be kidding me. There’s so much hype on the rookies but they’re clearly worse than this bum. No upgrades at safety either. Peyton barber was on our roster last year so we didn’t actually upgrade at rb since rojo is struggling worse than dougie. And the gift that keeps on giving, JR Sweezy, another licht FA gem, gets cut and we have no replacement. Everyone loves how licht drafts but we really don’t have much elite talent, JPP and Evans are the only ones licht has added himself. Lichts record speaks volumes.
I agree with Defense Rules!!!!! Well put my friend!!!!!!!! The plan is to see big development in those area’s, because if they don’t, next offseason will be the year of the accountants to see where the money flows!!!!! The “real” fans are interested to see if any big extension comes down after the 4th preseason game and opening day, instead of the top dollar contracts extension that we will see right before free-agency!!!!!! The draft next year should continue the work to “fix the trenches”, with the first round DE pick and then O-line in the second!!!!!!!
#trust the coaches!!!!!!!!! Fix the “real” problem, the roster!!!!!!!!!
Just a note To Joe on polls – you should always have an even number of choices and therefore force people to pick a side of the road.Don’t be silly. The choices here are very straightforward. If you’re a Licht guy, then you have three options. If you’re not, then you have a clear path. –Joe
813 is lying again!!!!!!!!! Why did they have to do an emergency make over the d-line???????? Why is the secondary a work in progress???????? GM Licht is building the roster, its been upgraded but job is not done!!!!!!!!!!!
#trust the coaches!!!!!!!!! Fix the “real” problem, the roster!!!!!!!!!
Big believer, that doesn’t say everything. Building a competitive NFL franchise from SCRATCH guarantees short-term losing. He inherited very little and has increased the talent level in multitudes. He can be judged for his record moving forward.
no CB has been developed under smitty and he needs everyone on defense to be a 1st round pick along with having pro bowls in order for “his” defense to work…..
Mike Evans
Jameis Winston
D. Smith
Ali Marpet
OJ Howard
Justin Evans
Noah Spence (hasn’t done much this year, but has been a factor when healthy)
M.J. Stewart
Carlton Davis
Yea you’re right Licht is terrible in the early rounds.
Best General Manager the Buccaneers have ever had. We are fortunate to have him.
In 5 years, when we are the Patriots of the NFC and we do not have to worry about free agents as much, everyone will recognize. Until then, trolls will be trolls, haters will be haters, and fair weather fans will be fair weather fans.
Jason Licht is the only G.M. in the history of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to consistently draft very well. By drafting well we will always have depth in our roster and a chance to win. Has Jason made some picks he regrets? I believe he has But so have every G.M. in the league. He is also learning… I don’t believe he will duplicate many of them. Our organization needs continued consistency. The Bucs problems are not with our General Manager. We should not tear down the foundation we have in place.
Team Glazier, please sign Jason Light to a long term contract.
GOD Bless America
GOD Bless the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
but everyone was complaining about talent…..not development….good coaches develop talent on their roster….barber is a perfect example of that….hump too….there’s no such example on defense…..this staff cant develop defensive players to save their life unless its LB….and all of our LB’s best years weren’t with this staff!!!!!
Looks like a lot of new guys!!!!!!!! Hard to say that NFL GM licht did his job and the coaches ” screwed him over”!!!!!!!! If you do not agree with the “real” fans, then you don’t agree with the Buc’s GM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#trust the coaches!!!!!!!!! Fix the “real” problem, the roster!!!!!!!!!
GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!
813 – I thought your post was referencing Licht needing all 1st rounders, not Smitty.
I do agree Smitty has not a done a very good job so far. Though I think the play of Carlton Davis and MJ Stewart so far has been encouraging. Justin Evans looked pretty good last year for a rookie.
To be honest the only high draft pick he had before this year was VH3, who I thought was going to be a bust and I did not want us to draft him to begin with.
Looks like a lot of new guys!!!!!!!! Hard to say that NFL GM licht did his job and the coaches ” screwed him over”!!!!!!!!
you know why there’s “a lot of new faces”?….because smitty cant develop players!!!!!!….
instead of building thru the draft, we have to hit FA hard with proven veteran players because smitty cant develop rookie or 2nd year players…..the proof is in the pudding!!!!!
About those free agent busts: when you have too many holes to fill, free agent players all know this. Makes it hard to recruit the best when THEY know it’s a long-shot season. And the team isn’t going to throw good money away when the bosses also know there are more holes than money. Plus, the free agent puzzle pieces don’t always line up–even when you have otherwise manageable deficiencies.
This is the first off-season with Gump when our needs were few, the market aligned with our needs, and the available free agents knew it. The rest was like pushing over dominos. I bet you there are some free agents out there who TRIED to come here this off-season.

3 Dlineman drafted in 4 years. No competition for drug Martin. Drafts like it’s madden

For a 5-11 team and all these overpaid 1 year rentals.
Next year we will be in salary cap hell and have to unload alot of key players.
Gump has made it tough for any GM to come in and turn this team around because it is so bloated….
Maybe that is his real plan. Making so dire no competent GM would come here. Lol

Another issue is the “busts” or lack of contributing high draft picks during his tenure. Hence the poor record.
ASJ 2nd round bust
Aguayo 2nd round bust
Spence-2nd round …none factor
Hargreaves. 1st Round none factor
OJ Howard…1st round…needed other positions worse.
August 28th, 2018 at 8:33 am
22-42 and past 3 drafts of first rounders are absolutely not contributing as 1st rounders should

The Buccaneers under the Jason Licht era have a *worse* winning percentage than they did during the Mark Dominick era.
That fact should give everyone some pause.
Little confidence in Jason Licht.

August 28th, 2018 at 10:51 am
“He needs everyone on defense to be a first round pick..”
Really? That’s interesting since we’ve spent exactly two 1st rounds picks on defense and all the rest have been offense….

1st and 2nd round picks who are contributing:
Mike Evans

M.J. Stewart
Carlton Davis

I have a feeling these votes will improve when the CBs do excellent this season. And Rojo improves as the season plays out.
