Jameis Knew He Had A Free Play

August 19th, 2018

High-wire act.

It was a free play.

That’s the word from America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

Last night Winston threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Chris Godwin where he dodged two would-be tacklers and as he was being pulled to the ground launched a pass that from the TV angle appeared to be a Hail Mary pass.

Joe is confident just about everyone watching the game was screaming “Throw it away, throw it away!” It was Jameis at his Brett Favre best.

Joe saw two field-level angles where the throw didn’t appear to be that dumb. Those looks appeared to show Godwin breaking open when Jameis launched the ball.

Jameis, in his post-game press conference, said he knew he had a free play as he saw a flag being thrown before he let loose the pass.

“I knew [there] was a flag,” Jameis said. “I saw … an opportunity when Godwin got open in the red zone. I threw it up to him and gave my guy a chance.”

Jameis said when film is broken down tomorrow he will probably get yelled at for the throw but Jameis also said a chance for a touchdown superceded the chance for a pick.

“We emphasize a lot of touchdowns in the red zone,” Jameis said. “Touchdowns win the day.”

Joe’s emotions were all over the place on that play. First, Joe was screaming at the TV and two or three seconds later, Joe was rejoicing.

Say what you want about Jameis, but the man is not boring. Dude is a high-wire act, man.

Drama. Fun. Excitement. Entertainment.

I don’t buy it. Bad decision on his part. Know way he knew it was flag on the d

  2. Dooshlarue Says:

Jameis would never say anything that wasn’t true.

  3. Dreambig Says:

If he knew there was a flag, it was genius, if he didn’t then he got away with a dumb play.

Joe, Why no wrap up artical with a summary and announcing the score in the title? I have been on your site about 10 minutes, read a few articals but have to go somewhere else to see the final score. Unusual oversight?

  4. Brandon Ayers Says:

Jameis can’t win for nothing fans are unbelievable. They cry about touchdowns and when our qb goes for it it is not good enough. That’s who jameis is if you don’t know by now you will never know. I love jameis attitude he let nothing get to him ball out like nothing happened. Trust me folks jameis seen the flag he also seen Godwin break open enough to chance it. Fans chill out let him play before you do to him what they did to josh freeman, which is coach what makes you you out of you if that makes any sense.

  5. Defense Rules Says:

@Jameis … ““I knew [there] was a flag,” Jameis said. “I saw … an opportunity when Godwin got open in the red zone. I threw it up to him and gave my guy a chance.”

Obviously Jameis has some Nostradamas in him knowing that the flag was on Tennessee and not on the Bucs. Almost every other flag that game was on the Bucs.

  6. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

I don’t buy it either, unless he saw the defensive player commit the penalty. It could have been holding or OPI on the Bucs. Unless JW saw the entire field and all players at once, including all his OL, TE, and WRs, it’s impossibly to have known with certainty who the flag was on. Godwin made a great play on a ball maybe he shouldn’t have thrown. Easy 3 points. But let’s see what koetter says if he’s asked about it.

  7. Buc’nIrishman Says:

    Tony

The flag was thrown in front of him. Of course he saw it. What the hell does it matter who it was on. You go for the play every time. If it’s on us then oh well. Didn’t count. Better than not throwing it and it’s on them. Damn. Think I just wasted my time. You probably would have still complained if he didn’t throw it. “FAN” HA!

  8. feelthepewterpower Says:

If Brett Favre makes the play, it is genius. If Winston makes that play, it is dumb.

  9. 1sparkybuc Says:

Most QBs would not have been able to make that play. They would have been sacked or been forced to throw it away. This is what makes Jameis special. He doesn’t quit under pressure. Favre was like that, and that’s a characteristic I admire in any QB. Give him decent protection with this corps of receivers and we have a winner.

  10. Realbucfan941 Says:

Seriously why are people still talking about this? Godwin clearly was open, by the time the ball got there the defense has closed on it making it look closer than it probably was. Happens all the time in football. If he wasn’t getting pulled down on the play people probably wouldn’t be talking about it. This is what he does, accept it and move on. Let the year play out, then criticize him if he makes dumb interceptions, not touchdowns in the PRESEASON! Did you see what he did the rest of the night?! Shut up already.

  11. Bucnut2 Says:

Go listen to Koetter’s presser. I doubt his coach liked that decision.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

In his post game radio interview Jameis never mentioned the flag…..he only said that Godwin was open……..you would have thought he would have stated he had a free play but he didn’t….only later did he mention the flag.
We will never really know…..we can take his word for it….or be skeptical…..either opinion works.

  13. Buc4L Says:

Most of the people on this site try to find any reason to hate on Jameis. GET OFF THE GUYS NUTS!!!! He made ONE STUPID THROW, WHEN THRERE WAS A FLAG DOWN AND IT WAS A TOUCHDOWN. Jamies will ball out this year. The offense is starting to roll and looking good. I’m sure most of the hater on here aren’t even Bucs fans, but haters will be haters. If you don’t like Jameis or the way the Bucs look then take it to the house, nobody wants to hear constant negativity.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  14. FairMinded Says:

The guy was lights out amazing all game. Even on the drive that ended with something like 4 straight penalties he fought for several first downs on third and long and salvaged a FG. Great touch passes, great long ball connections and as usual the gunslinger came out and threaded some bullets. All that was calm and in-control Jameis not wide-eyed freaking the F out Jameis. Hope the coaches also break that mental part of it down with him when assessing this game. He’s better for it

  15. Durango 95 Says:

The flag was thrown directly in front of Jameis field of view. No doubt whatsoever that he saw it. It was laying on the field directly in front of him. Brilliant preformance last night.

  16. El_Buc941 Says:

Joe is anyone here really surprised by the decision AND the outcome?it won’t be the first and definitely not his last. Now that he knows he has Mike and Godwin that can go up and get it like that expect Winston and Co. to go for it on fourth more often and expect those kind of plays from now on.

  17. Buc1987 Says:

Jameis needs to go win rings with another team.

    Our fanbase blooooooooooooooooooooows!

  18. Buc1987 Says:

1sparkybuc…we’ve had a winner…some just choose not to see it.

  19. Buc4L Says:

It’s nice to see some REAL FANS chime in! Bucs are looking good, Jameis is looking good!!!!

    HATERS GO HOME

    GOBUCS

  20. Pickgrin Says:

The arm strength required to make that “risky” TD throw that Jameis did with such velocity and accuracy as he was being dragged down and backwards – is something that very few Quarterbacks possess…

  21. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Sorry Jaboo……you’re lying….you were just acting boneheaded again <——————-(Jameis Lying??? How shocking!!!!)

Your a Fraud for a franchise QB

A Franchise QB would never try to make / force anything like that

    Flag’s a flag. Doesn’t matter who it’s on.

  23. horse liver Says:

What is it about “FREE PLAY” that people don’t understand. Jameis saw the flag, knew it was on the Titans and took a no risk shot. If it’s intercepted? Bucs first down half the distance to the goal. Bucs fans continue to be the dumbest on the planet. Sapp continues to be right.

Aaron Rodgers is the king of the free play and gets lauded for being a genius. Jameis gets villified.

FREE PLAY = take a shot. Thank you Jameis.

  24. mark2001 Says:

Agree Dreambig… AR draws flags from the opposition all the time, and goes for the big play. Of course, as you said, AR knows he has drawn the flag and the HC is ready to argue on behalf of his team and the outcome of the flag if necessary. But if he didn’t cause it, and know it was a obvious call against the Titans, it was a dumb play.

And BoJim.. it does matter who the flag is on. If it is on us and there is an int. or pick six, they simply refuse the penalty. About the only time that wouldn’t be the case would be if there were offsetting penalties.

  25. Ptwalk Says:

Winston saw an open receiver and delivered. I recorded the game and replayed that play a few times, Godwin was open.

  26. Bang4 YaBuc Says:

If you watch the replay you see the ref threw the flag because a LB literally grabbed a hold of Rodgers jersey. I’m assuming Winston saw it and took advantage of the play. Not to mention he saw Godwin breaking away from coverage

  27. Dooshlarue Says:

    Mark 2001

Thank you. I was gonna say the same thing about declining the penalty.

  28. morgan1672 Says:

I can buy that he saw the flag, but how did he know its was a defensive penalty and not an offensive penalty? It appears Jameis hasnt unlearned his ability to make stupid plays, hes gotta stop it

  29. Pryda... sec147 Says:

100% he knew it was a free play he was running for his life the whole time since he took the snap #60! Omg I thought he was gonna get Jaboo killed but nope that elusiveness worked and he they threw the flag right in front of him he saw the free play good for him

  30. jay adams Says:

Flag or no flag it was the 2nd team squad he was playing against so lets dont get so much false hope. Too soon to tell anything.

  31. webster Says:

    Dear jameis

Please leave this idiot fan base. There are too many dumb bricks like bucanthem etc. Farve made a hall of fame career making plays like that but this idiot says know one will do what you did. Leave as soon as you can.

  32. webster Says:

    Dear jameis

Please leave this idiot fan base. We even have these “football gurus” telling us not to get too excited or some crap about false hope because it was against the second team. I am willing to bet that this guru does not know the titan’s 1st or 2nd team so he is spewing assumptions. In any case he too is not too bright because he acts as if yo have never performed well against 1st teamers. Do you see how dumb this fan base is? Leave as soon as you can.

  33. Buc1987 Says:

    horse liver Says :

“Bucs fans continue to be the dumbest on the planet. Sapp continues to be right.”

I wear my Sapp jersey all the time around the house.

Jameis….Bucs fans want you to “stop it”. They hate Td’s.

Well only the ones coming from you, the call was in front of Jameis, so he threw the ball just like I’ve seen MANY qb’s AROUND THE NFL do.

But…. stop it Jameis…..just like when you used to dive head first into the end zone for TD’s…..they used to be on here saying how stupid you were….then later that day I see 4 different qb’s around the NFL do the same thing….but you’re Jameis Winston…so stop it.

“Bucs fans continue to be the dumbest on the planet. Sapp continues to be right.”

  34. darengibo Says:

seriously. we seem to be to the point of JW could be 30-30 5 TDs, 0INT and complaints would be “yeah, but his ball wasn’t spirally enough”… good grief.

  35. stpetebucsfan Says:

Seeing the flag is not enough. IF he actually saw a defensive penalty and then decided he had a free play that’s smart football.

If he just saw a flag…that’s not enough…especially with the horribly penalized Bucs. Whenever I see a flag I automatically assume it’s against us. Especially with our undisciplined OL.

So do you believe Jameis or not? It’s not like he has a problem with the truth.

That’s just Jameis. Feast or famine. I’m not worried about his talent at all!!!
But I still have questions about his head. But since he’s still our QB I’m happy to see him play so well.

  36. Reach87 Says:

Comical comments about that play…indicates either instant anti-winston bias or severe lack of football knowledge. Hope the team continues the process…Go Bucs!

  37. Durango 95 Says:

    darengibo -lol. So true.

  38. Buccfan37 Says:

Sure, you can call a lob and a prayer a Hail Mary pass.

  39. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

    Wow.

  40. horse liver Says:

Bucfan37 — what part of FREE PLAY don’t you understand? Or are you simply a moron?

  41. Not there yet Says:

Don’t insult Brett Favre no one in the NFL makes head scratching plays as much as he does, thing of it is if he truly here’s yelled at when he makes these plays but still doing it after all this time it’ll never change. I don’t think I believe his story about seeing the flag, another excuse for a questionable play. That’s his fault he doesn’t have benefit of the don’t if he didn’t prove to be a liar I’d believe him

  42. SoFloBuc Says:

I just re-watched the game, the flag was thrown right in front of him, so I do buy it

  43. Walter Seidel Says:

But one thing is absolutely certain…..IF Winston saw the flag, he did not know what it was for……..

  44. firethecannons Says:

It was a well practiced scramble play, of course he knew the flag was on the D he has played the game his whole life–he probably knew who, what and where on that penalty. He saw Godwin come open–it was a calculated risk. End of story. Save your angst for Brad Seaton–the dude that got the penalty that negated Godwins first score.

  45. Dapostman Says:

Lob pass to a tall guy in the end zone. I don’t see the big deal as long as it’s accurate and it was.

  46. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

StPete I never call you out but please just stop. You’re one of the most intelligent posters up here but you’ve let emotion get in front of that intelligence. The holding call happened right in front of him as was the flag thrown. Every qb knows that’s a free play no matter what but what made it a smart play was he saw Godwin open whom he trusts just like he’s done with Mike Evans several times. You seem to be a fair guy so why do you pretty much condemn him for things he was never convicted of any crime let alone charged with one. You’ve become almost like one of the tools up here who constantly bash Jameis no matter what he does you only do it with less hateration which makes it more irritating. The clowns are easy beatings but you are now like realist because it’s easier to simply easier to skip over your posts.

You know I get it, I’m a father of a daughter who was molested by a family friend but with the Kinsman thing can tell that was all a money play. The Uber thing he was so drunk he didn’t remember it. Would you freely admit to something that you can’t remember doing it? Please don’t lie and say you would. Now you and all these moral majority condemn him because he lied about the situation. He has trouble with the truth really??? Then you need to condemn yourself and every person in your life because I guarantee you every human out there has lied but you all hold Jameis to such an unattainable standard that you yourself can’t obtain. That is being a hypocrite . He’s done a lot of good in Tampa and shown he genuinely cares about the fans and his teammates. The next time you catch someone in a lie remember Jameis and condemn them like you do him!

  47. Realbucfan941 Says:

    Ok Walter…

Whatever you say, you’ve made your position known so no one cares what you say on the subject!

  48. Willy D Buc Says:

He threw to an open Godwin during a scramble. Get over yourselves.

  49. Andrew Says:

Even if he knew there was a flag, was he also certain that the penalty was on the defense?

  50. RODNEY J ALLEN Says:

It wasnt that long ago ppl were complaining about lack of redzone tds and now ur complaining about getting them. Some of u so called fans suck worse than our defense last year. Go be a dolphins fan r something. Jw is going to ball out from here on out n y all fake azzes gonna still act like female dogs SMDH LMMFAO

  51. stpetebucsfan Says:

    DavidBigBuc

Thanks for the honest disagreement although I’m not sure we disagree perhaps as much as you might think. And I too respect your posts so I want to answer.

I’ve moved passed Kinsman, Erica, any of the so called “sex” offenses.

What I have difficulty moving past is the fact that we do not have our starting QB for the first three games. Why? Whose fault was that? I’m just ready to see Jameis accept responsibility…but perhaps he has.

I’m one of the blog optimists…so I continue to hold out hope for JW. I’ve never doubted his physical talents…and I can live with the occasional bonehead decision in terms of making a play…but not charging a ref…or fighting on the sidelines. He can lose that part of his game and still keep his riverboat gambling style during actual plays.

JW has never really been punished for his infractions…I think I remember Jimbo suspending him once and he showed up on the field dressed out to be sent back to the locker room.

So far his actions seem to indicate that he’s learned a valuable lesson and is making a sincere effort so hopefully he’s grown after this discipline.

No matter how much you love him….and he is a very talented QB..and has a charismatic personality…you have to hold him accountable or he’ll never improve. Sometimes somebody just needs a serious knot jerked in their tail.
Perhaps this is the final straw that truly motivates JW off the field…he’s NEVER needed motivation on the field.

  52. TOM Says:

C’mon. There is no way JW knew he had a free play. The penalty could have easily been a holding call. He just got lucky.

  53. Bucsdobe Says:

Thank you St. Pete and David for intelligent, courteous dialogue! It is appreciated by more than you probably know and is what keeps many of us coming back.

  54. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

Simple go listen to Godwin’s take on the pass…they
practice that way and HE knew he needed to come down with it…why did Monken say the Bucs sucked in the REDZONE…”because they wanted to” well SORRY..
    ….
but Jameis want to not let us suck in the REDZONE…and he rarely have thrown interceptions in the REDZONE…

    NO risk no reward!

  55. Realbucfan941 Says:

    Sorry Tom,

Luck is when a fumbled football bounces your way. “Making a play” is what Jameis did last night. He had control.

  56. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Jay Adams, Winston made that same throw in the past to Evans for a TD, maybe twice. I think it was against SF and maybe the Rams . He wasn’t going against backups those times.

  57. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Winston is a high risk/high reward QB, and I’m not just talking about the Godwin TD. I’m talking about the “elite QB” throws. That TD pass to Watson is the type of throw that only franchise QBs attempt, let alone complete. That throw is the one that makes Jameis famous. We’ve got an exciting young QB that can make plays out of nothing. When I watch the Bucs I want to be entertained! Are you not entertained!?

  58. Eric Reyes Says:

So funny to see people praise Winston for playing well against guys who won’t be starting and some who could be working for UPS, Walmart, and Ikea this fall. Sorry but those weren’t NFL caliber players and we had our starters in. It’s better than throwing picks but lets be real, it proves nothing. Any starting offense should dominate against back ups, rookies, and UDFA’S.

  59. Dapostman Says:

    @Eric Reyes,

all it proves is that Winston threw an accurate pass to his WR for a TD. Doesn’t matter who was in the game because I know for a fact you can not predict what happens in an NFL game every time. The WR was open, the pass was accurate. TD.
You are entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts.

    Root against Jameis Winston….

    Be cool like Eric!

  61. Dre-Day Says:

Tampa Bay’s losing culture is cultivated by the cancer that calls itself a fan base. We suck as a city. Good job negative ones. You have turned this city into a cesspool of pessimism. And believe it or not, that cancer makes its way to our sports teams.
