“I’m Not Going To Let Someone Else Come Down With It”

August 19th, 2018

Big hands last night.

Joe is still smiling from the play last night when America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, avoided a sack and found Chris Godwin in the end zone for a touchdown in the first half of the second preseason game at Tennessee.

Yeah, the throw likely shouldn’t have been thrown. But that’s Jameis. That’s who he is. He’s no Checkdown Charlie. Those expecting Jameis to do otherwise are either going to have to embrace him or prepare for countless sleepless nights.

Lost in the play was that Godwin made a helluva play. Godwin is starting to build a reputation that he will battle for the ball. He’s got a nose for that, which is what he did in college, too.

Last night after the game, as seen on Buccaneers.com, Godwin said he was determined not to let the ball find its way in the hands of a Titans defender.

“It was a scramble drill, we practice this every week,” Godwin said. “We try to find open space. At some point, [Jameis] is going to throw the ball.

“I saw it in the air so I was like, ‘Man, I’m not going to let someone else come down with it.’ You know, someone else on the defense come down with it.”

On the TV angle, it sure looked like Godwin was in the middle of a scrum for the ball, not unlike a Hail Mary pass. But Joe saw two field-level angles that looked like how Godwin described the play: He was heading to an open space. The field-level angles Joe saw didn’t make the pass look near as dangerous as the TV angle did.

Fans last night saw what Godwin is doing in training camp practices and why Bucs types are so excited for Godwin’s future.

Godwin already looks like a man among boys….

  2. Trench War Says:

Jameis throws the ball up for a prayer (when he didn’t need too) and all Godwin was thinking was get there before the defense? So even he knew that had a real chance of being intercepted. Godwin saved Jameis’s proverbial @ss.

  3. Seminole Bill Says:

Had this been a “real” game, the right decision would have been to throw the ball away. The Bucs had the lead, protect the ball and the lead. This could have just as easily been an interception. If we were down a touchdown, and it was late in the 4th quarter, take a chance. But with the lead, throw it away and take the field goal. And yes, there was a flag on the play but a QB never really knows who the flag is on until the ref makes the call (except for obvious encroachment).

  4. Defense Rules Says:

Interesting observations on your part Joe … “The field-level angles Joe saw didn’t make the pass look near as dangerous as the TV angle did.” Got me wondering what angle JAMEIS saw (ie, did he throw it up as a Hail Mary pass). Obviously Godwin was a little concerned that it might be intercepted based on what he said.

  5. Bucamania Says:

That play did look MUCH different from the end zone cam. You can see how Jameis threw to Godwin in an open space. Let 12 make a play. JW made some sick throws last night.

  6. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Jameis said he knew he had a free play, but regardless, Chris Godwin almost beat My Michigan Wolverines by himself, when he was at Penn State.
Godwin could start on many NFL Teams, he is that good!

  7. Bobby M. Says:

One trait that will stick with Winston is his decision making under pressure….Whether dealing with off field issues or break downs on offense, he makes hasty decisions without consideration of what comes next. He plays in the moment with little perspective for the long term/big picture. He throws an interception there, which he’s done, that’s 3 pts off the board at a minimum. This is what Koetter and Monken refer to with ONE SCORE GAMES….You can’t blame the defense when your QB gives away points throughout the game, week after week. This one worked out but teams will roll those dice because statistically they’ll win way more then they lose.

“Jameis throws the ball up for a prayer (when he didn’t need too) and all Godwin was thinking was get there before the defense?”

No, Godwin performer as he practiced & headed for an opening, Winston saw him & threw the ball. Godwin saw it & made sure he came down with the ball. I saw the same field level view & saw the opening…it was small, but there. Why must you bitch about what could have happened, instead of celebrate what actually DID happen. There is risk in every play, in football, you seem so concerned about the risk that you’ll never be able to enjoy a good outcome. Just don’t understand that attitude.

  9. Kobe Faker Says:

Godwin has probably top 3 in all NFL best in catching in traffic and contact

Strong strong hands and concentration and the will to hold on

He should be our go yo possession reciever. Give the ball to godwin in the slot and let him run after catch

***Godwin should have the most targets per game than any buc reciever and force the opponents #1 corner to cover G12…..

And than the #2 and #3 corners will cover MeMe and djax…..

    =BLOODBATH

“Little Hump should sit and let watson cross train into the slot”

It’s funny how Jameis can shred a defense tallying 200+ passing and 2 TD’S in a quarter of play…No comment on a great game he played because theyre butt hurt over 1 (free play) that they feel he shouldn’t have attempted…

Undeniable proof that the hate is real…

  11. Destinjohnny Says:

    I love this kid
If we get 3 lineman and a back to compliment barber
I think it’s showtime on offense

  12. Trench War Says:

    @fritz

You think it’s my attitude? Blow it out your @ss. I bet it’s safe to say Coach Koetter and Monken didn’t like that either. Do you think it’s their attitude?

  13. Trench War Says:

Blow your hate whistle up your @ss One. I don’t hate Winston. I’m just pointing out how reckless he can be at times. Doesn’t make me a hater

  14. OneBuc55 Says:

    @Trench

At only 24 years old that’s something that cannot be coached out of him at this point; he truly believes he can make every play…In time as he matures he’ll be fine…That being said, the good imo out weighs the bad…

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’ll take JW at his word that he thought he had a free play….but he didn’t mention that when questioned during his radio interview after the game……I am quite convinced he saw the flag because it was right in front of him…..I’m not so convinced he saw the infraction and knew it was on the defense…..that was away from the flag somewhat.
I will say this….not many would or could make that throw…..what is interesting is that Jameis, while scrambling for his life, is able to see at least three things…..the flag, the infraction and an open Godwin…..I guess he saw the other receivers that weren’t open…..those are some pretty good eyes.

  16. Captainstagger Says:

I’d take Brett Favre over Alex Smith any day….

  17. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

Can reading and comprehension be this hard: Godwin said….”

“It was a scramble drill, we practice this every week,” Godwin said. “We try to find open space. At some point, [Jameis] is going to throw the ball.”

“AT SOME POINT JAMEIS IS GOING TO THROW THE BALL”

So as practiced JAMEIS threw the ball and his receiver did his job…he fought to get open and came down with the ball…

to not realize that, is to really say you want like what Monken said The Bucs to SUCK in the red zone!

  18. jmarkbuc Says:

We better be worried about this bad Defense…..

  19. Bculaw Says:

All of the folks claiming that Jameis should’ve thrown the ball away are crazy!!! If that ball gets picked, or even broken up, then it wouldve been a bad decision and should’ve been thrown away. But it was a TD!! Great scramble drill that very few QBs are able to turn into a TD. I hope he does it every game!!

Last night was a healthy dose of “good” Jameis. He lives on the edge sometimes, but “good” Jameis is really, really good. He makes plays that few, if any, can make.

  20. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

    Onebuc55…NAILED IT HERE…
“It’s funny how Jameis can shred a defense tallying 200+ passing and 2 TD’S in a quarter of play…No comment on a great game he played because theyre butt hurt over 1 (free play) that they feel he shouldn’t have attempted…

INSTEAD OF ACKNOWLEDGING Jameis’s positive plays deep throw to Mike, Djax, 3TD’s (1 called back because of a penalty), and scramble ability
Let’s show JAMEIS DERANGEMENT and harp on a throw that could have been intercepted or wait for a field goal that could be deflected or be a wide right or left or maybe even hit the goal pole and go out! ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE DURING ANY PLAY!

  21. pete Says:

    Watch that 2nd quarter again.
That is the QB I want on the team I am a fan of!

  22. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

You guys clamboring about it could have been intercepted please get out of here with your negative Nancy mess! Unless a player is w i i i de open ANY pass can be intercepted! All you’re doing is fishing for a reason to complain about Jameis. He has almost a perfect game and you pick on a play where he saw Godwin was open and he started throwing just as the defender was getting too him. Even got6deep gave him mad props on his game but not you! What Buc fans you are!

  23. Miguel Grande Says:

Remember JW threw 3 TD’s in one quarter of play. One to Godwin called off because of an inconsequential hold by the RT.

Famous Jameis was a beast last night.

Koetter and Monken will see that flag was laying on the ground right in front of jameis’ nose in a spot on the field where it is almost always a defensive hold.

Aaron Rodgers makes that throw and he’s a genius, jameis makes it and he’s a doofus.

  24. JimmyJack Says:

Pete……Isn’t that what Winston has always given us? Three quarters of 3 point football then a quarter of 17 points to lose by 6.

  25. OneBuc55 Says:

“Aaron Rodgers makes that throw and he’s a genius, jameis makes it and he’s a doofus”…

    Bingo Miguel Grande…

While Mariota looks to have already plateaued …Jameis at 24 yrs old is nowhere near his ceiling…After the Eagles game his rookie year when he threw 5 TD’s I predicted he’d win at least 2 Super Bowls…I still believe that; but with this fan base, I just hope it’s here in Tampa Bay…

  26. TampaTown Says:

    ^^^What he said.

  27. tval Says:

It’s a team sport, jimmy. Give Brady this Bucs team, Jameis has had, and you’d get the SAME result…maybe more injury time. Try watching the game. That may help??

  28. Trench War Says:

Jameis played really great last night like I knew he would but the hail mary pass falling backward is the type of plays that have hurt the team in the past. He ended up being the hero, thankfully but had that been intercepted can you imagine the chorus of boo birds? It would have been deafening. I like risk but only at the time we need to take a risk. We were already within FG range in a position to score. That could have potentially been 3 points wiped away and difference between a win to a loss. We need smart football and take the risks only when needed.

  29. gp Says:

Smart football means don’t pay any attention to the armchair quarterbacks on this blog!!!!!!

  30. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

    Ditto gp…
it is so easy to criticize and second guess when it is not your a$$ on the line and in the trenches.
Especially when you are not in the eyes of the beholder!

  31. Neal Says:

“Jameis throws the ball up for a prayer (when he didn’t need too)” No, No he didn’t. He threw the ball like any other play. Joe literally just said that in the article. Try watching the other angles. “and all Godwin was thinking was get there before the defense?” Yes thats what every receiver does on every play. Can someone really be this dumb? Again. people will complain about anything. You’re really mad that Godwin was thinking to get the ball before the defense? and thats is a bad thing? What?
