He Can Catch!

August 17th, 2018

Video evidence.

Yes, the first few weeks of Bucs second-round pick Ronald Jones’ NFL career haven’t been exactly smooth for the talented running back.

In his first preseason game, Jones dropped a pass, ran for a red-zone touchdown, and failed on a pass block of a D-lineman who cracked Jameis Winston in the head on the play.

Bucs coach Dirk Koetter thought Jones did a few things that could have set himself up to fail but are easily correctable.

In training camp practices, Jones has been struggling catching the ball. Not a good sign, at least in the early stages.

Now there were reports from various sources, including WFLA-TV, Channel 8 sports anchor Dan Lucas’ social media offerings, that Jones was having a rough day Thursday catching the football. Again.

However, video has surfaced by way of the Bucs themselves that demonstrates Jones really can catch. And it was a damn fine catch too.

America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, offered up a perfectly-thrown ball that arched right down to Jones where he made a sweet over-the-shoulder grab. The catch appeared to come during a seven-on-seven drill against the Titans. The Bucs held their second of a two-day joint practice session with Tennessee yesterday in advance of Saturday’s game in Nashville.

Joe was impressed. You know, just like how Koetter drew the play up on the whiteboard.

See for yourself.

    Nice grab rook…

I think he’ll be a stud for us; he’s a downhill/1 cut back with the speed to go 90 yrds…The good thing for him and whoever our RB is on the play, defenses have to respect Jameis and his receivers…because of that they shouldn’t see many defenses willing to risk putting 8 or 9 guys in the box…

Exactly, OneBuc55. Exactly. That goes for Barber and Wilson as well.

Anyone could have caught that beauty. Great throw JW! Rook will be fine.

  6. m0j0 Says:

Wheel routes and screens are the two main areas where he may be involved in the passing game, so good to see he can catch a nicely thrown ball over the shoulder!

It’s very early yet……let this guy break one long run and his catching woes will be minimized…

Our O-line against Miami looked DOMINANT.

Just rewatch the TD run by Barber.

    Our O-line pancaked 4 guys!

    Go watch again. Its amazing!

A lot of backs drafted are really showing out
If we want to be great we can’t have a Miss here

    @Teacherman

I was rewatching the condensed version on Game Pass and rewound it several times. Donovan Smith helped wash out the entire right side.

He could have moonwalked into the end zone!!

    Jugs machine everyday..

If he can’t contribute with his hands it really wasn’t a good pick. It’s critical that he catches a fair amount of passes.

  15. ChanEpic Says:

I know this may come off badly but… I could’ve caught that ball because he was open and the pass was perfect. Not saying this wasn’t a nice play but we’re applauding a professional RB for catching a wide open well throw ball now? OK.

  16. Joe Says:

professional RB for catching a wide open well throw ball now?

Given how he has struggled catching the ball, yes.

    Baby steps man. Baby steps.

  17. ChanEpic Says:

    @Joe – Fair enough.

  18. bucinA Says:

Joey, Joey Joey. Before I make another comment concerning America’s QB, nice throw and catch. Do it with a game on the line with a difficult catch consistently
and you’ve got an awesome team. I just don’t think that team includes JW. Just my
own take and I still hope that Jameis has a good year. However, if he doesn’t and
he ends up being the backup to Bortles or somebody will you still call him America’s Quarterback?

    Yes!

We have been waiting patiently for years finally year 4 of Jameis idk where but I remember being told that 4-5 years to develop a QB. We’ve been wanting Jameis to come in and start winning but we had to take the lumps hopefully we’re done with that and this is the year Jameis finally turns the corner to being Elite ! Shoot he could be MVP when the season is over he has all the weapons and tools he just needs to put it all together Consistently.

  21. Ugandan Knuckles Says:

I can catch too, but, like Jones, I doubt I could do it well consistently at a professional level.

  22. THETRUTH Says:

How many balls did he drop in first game and how many did Goodwin drop ? One drop doesn’t mean he can never catch a ball , relax Joe let’s wait and Nd see as season goes on
