Grubbing Out With Noah Spence

August 8th, 2018

Eats like a hungry dog.

Last offseason, Bucs defensive end Noah Spence came to the conclusion he had to do two things for his NFL career to progress.

One was to stay healthy. He had the second operation in as many years on the same shoulder, this time Spence told Joe it was a “the full” surgery,” whatever that means.

Second, per Jenna Laine of ESPN, Spence had to put on weight. He was too light last year. But how could Spence put on weight and not lose his speed, which is his greatest asset?

Eat. That’s how. Eat a lot. Smartly.

“Today was the heaviest I’ve ever been and I felt great. I was 263 today,” said Spence, 24, whose goal was to put on the weight cleanly, with minimal gain in body fat. “I kind of just started playing with it [in the offseason] to see what works. I felt like if I just don’t stop eating or drinking, I won’t lose weight.”

Spence got the idea to put on weight from watching tapes of players will similar builds to his. Bucs defensive line coach Brentson Buckner didn’t order Spence to eat but noted Spence would be a target against the run unless he bulked up.

Spence put two-and-two together and while he is chiseled like a bodybuilder, the dude eats. And eats. And eats some more. Laine points out Spence eats nine meals a day — nine! His food intake could reach 9,000 calories a day.

Joe thinks Spence is the X-factor with the Bucs’ pass rush. If this dude can take off, the Bucs have a chance to have a legendary pass rush like Bucs fans haven’t seen in a long, long time.

Dammmmn!!!! When’s the man have time to do anything else. That my friend is a lot of food consumption!! Can you imagine how hard he’s hard to work to keep that body chiseled!! I’m rooting for you buddy. Anybody with that kinda discipline will find a way to get his playing time. Plus he played at a school in Kentucky!!!!! LETS GOOOOO!

My son works out at the same place he does, ASPI in Tampa. Says he’s a BEAST in the gym !

Would love to see Ronald Jones gain about 10 to 15 lbs of muscle too, not too much so it won’t affect his speed. Might be needed but we’ll see how he does.

It’s going to be hard to prevent body fat during the season with that kind of diet.

But here’s what I like about this. Noah Spence has been injured two seasons in a row. Instead of wallowing in self pity, he’s trying hard to find ways to increase his chances of success. We’re seeing the same in other players, like Vernon for example (the desire to become better).

That’s what sets this roster apart from other Bucs rosters the past 10 years. We have no quitters, and if any do arrive, they are quickly shown the door.

It looks like Spence is not only trying to make sure he does not get injured, but he’s also trying to become an every down DE and not accepting that size will limit him.

    Good for him.

I would also like to see him carry that football everywhere he goes. Best that they deal with the fumble issue before it becomes and in-season issue.

My Wife went through noninvasive shoulder surgery and her upper arm was out of it’s socket and the surgeon was able to cut off a part of shoulder bone, repair her rotator cuff and reattach her upper arm all with a small device with a mini camera and accepted mini tools. However years later She still has pain in it sometimes and it is hard for her to reach high with her arm and occasionally the arm bone gets stuck in the bands that hold it in. That is the type of surgery Spence went through the first time that was not ideal and then failed last year. The new surgery was more like open heart surgery. They opened up his shoulder and operated on it with big tools and made it really sound and strong. That is more painful and takes much longer in rehab to heal and get functional. I know the Bucs are still Leary of if it but I expect him to play all year and get more game time as the Bucs see he can take it. Lucky for us!

I hate to say it but 4 shoulder injuries in a couple of years…. this guy is done. The opposing teams will intentionally have the RB or TE chip away at his bad shoulder. It’s just the nature of the business. I hope he has a college degree to fall back on.

  15. Easy Says:

That’s alot of damn protein shakes!! I bet he’s laying some loggerhead tends from all those!!

  16. BigMacAttack Says:

Dear Gerald McCoy, this this this.
Lose the fat and turn it into muscle.
Sure GMC is good but he can be better.

  17. Joel Says:

And he’ll be injured by mid-season…

  18. Anonymous Says:

When your asked to be a badass in your Job and you don’t quit you’ll see results. Most people quit before they even start because they fear failure. This dude is mentally tough and will be awesome soon! Go get them Noah!

  19. Oxycondoms Says:

If he has to eat that much then it seems obvious he is playing a position that isn’t suited for him naturally .

  20. Trench War Says:

Seems we keep rehashing the same sentiment ..maybe this will be it finally, hopefully.

  21. RODNEY J ALLEN Says:

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

People said the same thing about McCoy.

Speaking of which, I predict McCoy gets double digit sacks this year.
