Vinny Curry Loves “Coach Buck”

July 27th, 2018

Impressing Super Bowl champ.

Even though Joe is fat and getting older and his lone concept of working out is doing 12-ounce curls, after listening to Vinny Curry today, Joe felt like strapping on a helmet and hitting a tackling dummy and hoping he didn’t stroke out.

Curry, the Bucs’ versatile defensive lineman fresh from winning a Super Bowl with Philadelphia, is an impressive speaker to begin with. But to hear the passion dripping from his voice talking about Bucs defensive line coach Brentson Buckner was inspirational.

“One-hundred percent!” Curry said when Joe asked him if Buckner being on the coaching staff helped lure him to Tampa Bay as a free agent.

“We are learning so much from ‘Buck,’ man,” Curry said. “He is an amazing dude. Not just a football coach. He’s a great father, great husband. He’s trying to be a great mentor to us at the end of the day.”

A couple of things struck Joe at the end of the first Bucs practice Thursday. One was all the defensive linemen gathered around to listen to Buckner, who spoke to his unit for about 10-12 minutes. That’s not all that unusual but with Buckner it seemed to be a one-way conversation. He had his players transfixed on his words.

And as soon as the pow-wow broke up, the entire defensive line gathered in a circle, held hands and prayed. Joe has never seen that before.

Curry said that is just part of becoming a cohesive, tight clan.

“Got to, got to man.”

One reason the defensive linemen look up to Buckner is that he played the game, and not that long ago. It helps he started in a Super Bowl.

Curry explained Buckner wasn’t just an empty jersey.

Curry claimed Buckner had the quickest get-off in NFL history and that his get-off changed the game. Seriously. When Joe asked Curry if Buckner was quicker than Warren Sapp or Gerald McCoy (Sapp told Joe once that GMC was quicker than he was, and not by a little), Curry told Joe, “Look at the film.”

And Curry said Buckner has brought his wisdom as a coach wherever he has been.

Buckner was an elite player “even before his name was ringing a bell for training elite pass rushers,” Curry said. “To see what he did when he got to Arizona was amazing. Now to play for the man, to get all the knowledge you can get from him is a blessing in disguise.”

Oh yes, bring on New Orleans.

A vastly improved D line, along with a little Rojo / Barber lightning and thunder tandem at RB could be what pushes us over.

If only our o line can play up to their JBF-established pedigree of elite level of play, we could be real dangerous.

Joe , were they truly transfixed on Buck’s words or just fighting back heat stroke?

    QB killas!

    Coach em up Buck!

If DLine can be a team strength as the new roster suggests – instead of an extreme weakness like last year, the Bucs are going to win quite a few games in 2018.

To bad we don’t have a secondary to match

How do you know? Are you basing this assumption on season’s past where we had no pass rush, and we had to play twenty yards off the receiver because qb’s would have had all day to throw? With the new group we have, we should be able to get home with four of our best pass rushers on the field at the same time (Curry, JPP, Spence, and McCoy)…and we can try new things to wreak even more havoc….ala have mccoy line up as an defensive end, move JPP inside next to mccoy….have David and/or Kwon blitz, etc.!! This will allow our corners to play more aggressive, give them more confidence, and allow them to make more plays on the ball.

YEAH! What Pewter Power just said!!!

    RIDE OR DIE! GO BUCS!!!!!

This D-line WILL make a difference. This secondary WILL benefit from it. Prayers won’t help, but the bonding will. Wildcard at the very last. SB in the near future. Adversity can give a team a boost.

Heard Ronde Barber say on Fox 13 one morning that his best years as a DB were when he had a good D-line in front of him. I hope this years D-line is one we haven’t seen in years.

If all Fails this season. Buckner is next HC. I’ll put money on it.
