Ronald Jones Talks Nursing Hamstring Injury During Spring Practices

July 17th, 2018

Man, Joe was about to cruise Abe’s Place for a fantastic lunch that rivaled Joe’s World Cup final spread there on Sunday. But now Joe’s appetite is gone after hearing chatter from Bucs rookie running back Ronald Jones.

Via a late-June video interview (see below) for Jones’ hometown newspaper, the McKinney Courier-Gazette, Jones was asked about what spring practices were like with the Buccaneers and what he learned.

Joe was surprised to hear Jones reference a hamstring injury. Joe certainly hopes Jones wasn’t referring to the hammy pull he suffered months prior at the NFL Scouting Combine.

“Definitely sleep was No. 1 because there was a lot of late nights,” Jones said. “You know, you’re waking up at 6:30 a.m.); you’re not getting done til like 6:30 or 7.  So sleep, just find a routine, taking care of your body. Because even during OTAs we weren’t hittin’; it was just helmets. But still a lot of soreness, still coming off that hamstring. So just maintaining that, monitoring that because you don’t want any setbacks ’cause you’ve got to prove yourself every day.”

Joe doesn’t want to overblow this, but a hamstring issue is not something you want lingering around a speed demon like Jones. And if that hammy was around for months, then it was probably darn serious.

Joe will be talking to the football gods later today.

Hopefully this won’t end up like another “Easy Sweezy” money situation…….. 😩

  2. Roy T. Buford Says:

Looks like it’s the lingering injury from the comments. Ouch. This could be bad.

  3. Chris in WA Says:

I am praying for RJ2 to tear it up this season, however if Derrius Guice has the best rookie RB season out of Saquon Barkley I will go insane at Jason Licht.

  4. HFXBUC Says:

just for a bit of sunshine… he ran a 4.48 at his pro day on a bad hammy…

  5. stpetebucsfan Says:

Well if we really wish to worry about old injuries being totally healed there are plenty of candidates.

ROJO…Noah Spence…is our QB’s arm fully healed…at least he get an extra three weeks before he has to use it….Kwon has been bothered by a nagging hammy…Grimes…there are more…it’s the NFL..injuries are a big part of the game.

I concede luck has a huge part in any team’s success…but I get 813 and the “no excuses” crowd…it’s simply next man up…bad luck is not an excuse but it’s certainly a reality and sometimes a reason for failure.

  6. rrsrq Says:

Really good “get to know RJ” interview, hoping for big things when nobody is expecting it, shock the world, Go Bucs

  7. Shane247 Says:

I hope he turns out to be a great back. I just have never been a fan of that upright running style.

  8. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @HFXBUC

That’s what I was thinking. He looks like a 4.3 guy on tape.

This was in June and there were no reports of any official setbacks. He’s now had another month since the interview to heal before TC.

  9. m0j0 Says:

Nothing to worry about. I’m sure his trainers and coaches are just preaching to him about the importance of taking care of his body and not doing anything to injure himself (or aggravate old injuries) during spring practices. It’s good that he’s being conscious about it and making sure he reports to training camp healthy and ready to go.

  10. Crack3rK Says:

OMG…do we ever do all our homework? Damage goods. Can we send him back?

  11. HFXBUC Says:

watched some highlights and he’s outrunning or at least staying ahead of 4.3 guys. So I’d say he’s a 4.40 or a high 4.3 guy.

  12. Kobe Faker Says:

Our 199lber sure looks small. Runs straightup and has small hands. The worst pass catching technique i have seen in decades.

“Hey 199er, its not pac12 defense anymore”

As everyone here knows, Kobe Faker was the first to claim how bad the 2016 draft was….

“The 2018 draft is worse than the historical putrid 2016 draft”

“The 2018 draft will be known for passing on 2 10 yearall pro starters in Derwin James and Derrius Guice for a bunch of backups”

    Kobe Faker

  13. Tom Edrington Says:

Ah, running back with a HAMMY? Ain’t that sweet?

  14. Joel Says:

This franchise has a conditioning and injury problem. Not sure why it’s not talked about more.

  15. ARGH_M8E Says:

Who brought the good news bear?!!! Somebody get some honey!!! Quick!

  17. Casey Morgan Says:

Joe- making something out of nothing. He just said that he HAD a hamstring injury to monitor, not that it bothered him or he re-injured it…

  18. AlteredEgo Says:

As long as Jameis’s moral compass has been corrected …all will be well

  19. feelthepewterpower Says:

Joe, hopefully from the Buccs can see my comment. The Buccs could eliminate a lot of the pulls, strains, and recover faster after workouts through magnesium supplementation/oil/baths. Our bodies don’t get enough through diet, and we lose magnesium through caffeine/chocolate, exercise, alcohol, RX’s etc. Magnesium is also displaced by calcium, which if you notice is in all of our store-bought products as a preservative or nutritional additive. Magnesium is involved in over 300 processes in the body (every heartbeat runs on magnesium, used in muscle recovery, and the ATP cycle per example). Not only would the injuries cut down, they’d have better endurance and energy on the field. In fact, I believe the Golden State Warriors used deprivation tank baths (70 percent magnesium baths) as part of their recovery and conditioning program.

  20. Pickgrin Says:

He was talking about the previous hamstring injury from the spring which likely was pretty serious.

Anytime one has a previous injury – it bears monitoring that area of the body for awhile for warning signs like discomfort, tightness etc and taking pro-active measures like extra stretching, extra massage, etc. if detected.

  21. feelthepewterpower Says:

I forgot to add above that magnesium helps break down the lactic acid build up or the soreness. in muscles in addition to stopping and relieive muscle spasms. The Buccs would be wise to make sure their team is on a magnesium regimen that fully restores the body’s required levels (which is much more than the rda presently requires)……

  22. feelthepewterpower Says:

The thing with magnesium at least if you take it internally is that the only side effect is that acts like a laxative if the body can’t tolerate the amount. Oil and baths don’t usually have this probably as it is absorbed
In the blood stream first rather than the intestines. They would have to start slow then you can build up to the high levels required on a faily basis (two to three grams; more may he required under heavy conditioning).

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    feelthepewterpower

Magnesium is great but it doesn’t hold a candle to TBBFs choice of muscle relaxer…Methaqualone (Quaaludes)…….pop a couple of those babies and all your pain goes away…
Of course they quit making them…..Damn the FDA.

  24. Pickgrin Says:

Why are all my posts today just disappearing into the ether as soon as I hit submit? 2 showed up later. 2 didn’t.

Definitely didn’t trigger any filters with any of them.

Whats up with the site eating my comments Joe?

  25. Eric Says:

One thing I have noticed about the Joe’s.

When they say something is a worry it usually is. (see Winston suspension)(muscle Hamster reliance)

  26. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Kobe why dont you put your money where your mouth is?

I guarantee this draft class won’t be as bad. Most of what you say is complete garbage but it is funny, ill give you that.
Weren’t you supposed to vanish from JBF because you said there was no way we would win a game (chiefs?) Or you’d disappear?
RoJo has a great opportunity to be a stud right off the bat. He is closer to 210 then 200 so I’m not sure where you get 199. I hope you are just being comical and are not this uninformed.
I will bet you he rushes for more yards than Dougie Fresh last year.

  27. BringBucsBack Says:

“…still comin’ off that hamstring.” -His words!

I’d say that is something to worry about.

If there was a game this Sunday, would he be doubtful or probable? He hasn’t even played a game in 7 months.

I can’t help but feel that against all of these odds they are either going to have the greatest season ever or they will be picking second in next years draft!

That should give us some concern over Dotson’s knee…..developing DBs…..Koetter & rookie RBs….

With our Bucs….one could worry about alot.

  29. Buc4L Says:

This guy has amazing college highlights, he is taking it to the house 90% of the time. He is fast, shifty, has good vision, and has shown he can be consistent. People are complaining about his hands, they barely threw him the ball, he had less than 50 pass attempts his whole career at USC, and of . The dude can be amazing, the biggest issue is staying healthy, if he can stay healthy we got a serious running back.

    GOBUCS!!!!

  30. Resurrection of Fitz Says:

Hell! some DUCT TAPE and RoJo won’t lose his mojo!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!

  31. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @Alaskan

Kobe has said plenty of dumb sh1t and made plenty of terrible predictions – as have many others- but there’s no accountability for that lol.

Even regarding the 2016 draft – he was most definitely not the first to say it was a terrible draft. In fact – he never even said anything along those lines during the entire 2016 calendar off season that I can find in a simple google search of “Kobe Faker joebucsfan” with a date range of April-September 2016.

The only critique of the draft he had in that time was not drafting Sterling Shepard; who wasn’t even available when we drafted in round 2.

    lol.

His posting style is entertaining at least.

And I’d still take Spence over Shepard going into 2018 all day.

Will be interesting to see the Vea/James Guice/Jones prediction play out. If it blows up in his face we surely won’t hear about it later. Win Win for Kobe Faker.

  32. Lord Cornelius Says:

OOps nevermind Sterling Shepard WAS available in R2. Lol @ me.

Still – I liked Shepard but not over a DE like Spence. And I recall him saying SHepard would be an elite #1 WR. So let’s see if that happens too. ANd let’s see what happens with Spence.

  33. NMBucsFan Says:

Buc4L, maybe he had less than 50 pass attempts because they knew he couldn’t catch the ball….

I seriously doubt USC would’ve kept that under wraps if he was such a threat receiving out of the backfield

  34. Buccaneer scotty Says:

When I saw him pull up at the NFL combine I knew we would draft him LOL

  35. SB Says:

I have this weird feeling that the Barber/Rojo combo is gonna be Deadly this yr with the Receiving corps we have. That plus an improved Defense to actually give them better field position.

  36. Destinjohnny Says:

    Ferrari’s require heaps of maintence
He is a taller angular back and they tend to get hammies

  37. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Just the threat of Rojo’s speed coming out of the backfield will help greatly…..would like to see some two back sets……

    How about a set with 2 RBs, 2 TEs & 5 WRs…Jameis & Jensen…..with all sorts of motion.

Just trying to lighten things up….cause it looks like we have Rojo on IR already.

  38. SB Says:

Alright Johnny……I see you are not letting me off the bet due to JW’s suspension.
All good Sir! Bet still on.
You want an OJ Howard large as of now.
I will tell you who I want if I win. 🙂

  39. Season Is Over Says:

Why are there any question marks at all on a RB taken in the first 40 picks?

  40. Sweeptheleg Says:

Man the Bucs uniforms are terrible

  41. JabooBuc Says:

what is up with you people??? Sky is always falling. Rojo was simply mentioning that he was coming off an injury. Typically, that means you should take it a little easy so as not to re-injure. It’s just common sense people

  42. Gambelero Says:

Hey Lord. Can you find my prediction from last year this time that we’d go 12-4. Tired of people questioning my veracity—with some people flat out calling me a liar, saying I never really made that prediction.

Agree on hamstrings. The paranoia strikes deep. For month every little twinge scares you.

  43. Gambelero Says:

    Months

  44. SB Says:

If I still lived there I would definitely get my Garage Door at DGD!
    Their number is 420-Door.

  45. Defense Rules Says:

Hmmm, maybe acquiring another RB … preferably a bruiser in the ATrain lineage … MIGHT be a good idea Jason. Jacquizz is cheap I know and provides a great security blanket for Dirk, BUT he’s taking up a valuable position. If Barber or RoJo go out for several games, Bucs running game could grind to a halt. And we all know what that usually means … Winston racks up tons of yardage making Joe happy AND TOO OFTEN, THE BUCS LOSE.

  46. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I have concerns about injuries reoccurring to Marpet, Djax, OJ, GMC, LVD, Kwon, Spence, Grimes and a host of others…….

    The season is lost!!!

  47. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Pickgrin

Agree that it’s a bit premature to put ROJO on the IR already.

And not that it will make you feel any better but it’s not you or your choice of words…I have the same experience…I NEVER see a post without waiting different periods of time and sometimes like yours they disappear completely.

    Sweeptheleg

You may have that rare post that everybody agrees with…the uni’s are enough to make us vomit and I’ve yet to see anybody defend them. They are truly ugly.

  48. DalvinCookRules Says:

I know everyone hates me for saying the Ronald Jones pick was terrible, but I’d love to put my track record of NFL drafting against anyone out there. The kid has a narrow frame and I don’t think he will play a single full season in the NFL. You really want to see a RB have more natural bulk, especially in the thighs. He’s done a great job of maximizing his muscle mass, but it is not the muscle that is important but the underlying bone structure & frame that will determine durability.

I still believe he is a very poor man’s Reggie Bush–and if I’m wrong, then the best he’s going to be is another R. Bush who had a modest NFL career but far from expectations.

  49. Ndog Says:

Just a FYI two of the folks that have gone on record already saying we would be horrible this year also had the Jaguars finishing as the second worst team in the league last year. So for those of you who like to pile onto some idiots prediction just keep that in mind.

  50. Lamarcus Says:

He runs wayyy to high so yes hammies and knees could be a issue. Looks like Jamal Charles running home runs but his legs seems to kick back touching his butt. Haven’t seen a player good in the NFL that runs like that

  51. Tampaspicer Says:

ROJO is going to be a difference maker for the Bucs. Teams can’t ignore his speed and big play capability. Can’t wait to see him play.

  52. Tc Says:

Sounds like a Ferrari, looks great, sounds great but they can have problems and a lot of maintenance.

And like a Ferrari there’s nobody in these parts that can work on them.
