Mid-season Form
July 28th, 2018This will be mentioned in the practice notes but Joe thought this was so interesting (to him) that he will write a small post about it.
Mike Evans is one of the better wide receivers in the league. Some believe he is a second-tier receiver only because he is not a burner. While Evans doesn’t have elite speed, that doesn’t make him a lesser receiver.
Joe has always been impressed with Evans’ footwork. He may have the best feet in the NFL this side of Antonio Brown. Damn-near Lynn Swann kind of feet.
Evans and his footwork are just as good now as he was as a rookie, and those feet were on display today on a catch that demonstrated why he is elite.
Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a pass to Evans on the left sideline. Evans was covered fairly well by cornerback Josh Robinson. Evans and Robinson were facing inside when Evans may have gotten away with a push-off. It wasn’t flagrant but just enough to buy Evans a fraction of space to pull in the pass.
Evans still had to do a tap dance with his feet to stay inbounds which he did. Just barely inbounds but Evans was able to haul in the pass.
It was beautiful and evidence to fans that Evans still has the goods, even this early in training camp.

A beast of a WR.

It sounds like his hands are in midseason form also.

Joe, I will have to disagree with you about the speed. Remember when he ran past Richard Sherman and got behind half of Atlanta’s secondary? He has a way of running past receivers.

The sideline catchs is one of the reasons his yards after catch is low that no one seems to mention.

Looked to me like he would have been flagged. That seems to be problem with him being so big….small things look bigger than they are. But this didn’t seem close.

Glad you threw AB in there this time Joe, not slight on ME though, expecting a monster year, everybody got to have a chip on their shoulder with all the disrespect. Only thing, I can bet you that no team will take them slightly, games knows game

Guess it will take a few more 1000+ seasons before he gets the props he deserves. 🙁

Evans lost a lot of 50/50 balls last year and was called for a ton of PI. He has looked like a top tier WR in prior seasons, last season was not one of them. He needs to work on his craft to get back to being a top tier player for us. It ain’t easy staying on top of the league.
