A Look At Every Matchup Of Bucs’ 1-On-1 Pass Rush/Pass Blocking Work

July 29th, 2018

Mike Smith lost his cool on one Bucs veteran

One great joy of the Buccaneers’ practicing in full pads — finally! — is the 1-on-1 drill work of offensive linemen versus d-linemen.

And that kicked off today in grand fashion. Joe’s got highlights.

First it was Vinny Curry up against right tackle Leonard Wester, who has been taking first-team duty with Demar Dotson being eased back into action after offseason knee surgery. Curry, from a left end stance, beat Wester easily. Their second go was marred by Curry jumping offsides. Mike Smith was shaking his head. Wester then held Curry on the do-over. That series was not the mark of a “Discipline Driven” team.

Next up was Mitch Unrein versus Caleb Benenoch in a guard stance. FIGHT!!! Unrein was stoned and then threw a right to the face of Benenoch. See full story on the home page of JoeBucsFan.com.

Up next is Evan Smith against Gerald McCoy. Win Smith.

Beau Allen was up next against someone Joe couldn’t see. But coaches were fired up for Allen and d-line coach Brentson Buckner went over to him after his session, walking a decent way, and barked, “Perfect!”

Will Gholston, rushing from the left side, jumped offsides against camp-meat tackle Brad Seaton and Mike Smith blew his cool, screaming at Gholston to “Watch the f*^%’n ball!” Seaton handled Gholston on the next snap.

Second-year DT Stevie Tu’ikolovatu was overwhelmed in his match-ups, including by undrafted camp meat rookie guard Ruben Holcomb, and Buckner didn’t like the technique. “I don’t want to repeat myself,” Buckner told him.

Tackle Michael Liedtke, who was on the roster for a chunk of last season, manhandled Jason Pierre-Paul, who hugged and patted Liedtke’s helmet afterwards. Video here.

Undrafted rookie Cole Boozer easily handled undrafted rookie DE Evan Perrizo. Boozer seems to be well liked and he could come into play eventually considering Wester was injured later in the practice.

Donovan Smith appeared to be asking for a shot to go 1-on-1 but was denied. The horn sounded and the team moved indoors.

Joe…it’s early yet….but are you sensing more passion?……I can sort of feel that with your writing thus far…..

If that is the case, it can make a huge difference…..we have many new players and that can spark things.

    Great report Joe, thanks!

Bet they are sore…. and will be until the season is over… football is a brutally painful game to play…. much easier from the couch…

Kinda of irked it took this long to really focus on our dline.

    Go Bucs!

Any word on the injury to Tevita Tuli’aki’ono Tuipulotu Mosese Va’hae Fehoko Faletau Vea?

    SB,

“Up next is Evan Smith against Gerald McCoy. Win Smith”.

That’s the one that should have you hitting the bottle hard.

  11. Owlykat Says:

So glad they brought back the real hitting to practice! Koetter made the right decision! No more pansy workouts. I felt Benenoch could handle the RT spot. Cappa should have been working out for RT all this time instead of Center. Where was he in this drill?

  12. BucEmUp Says:

Hopefully Smith finally learns how to coach this season.

  13. Mike10 Says:

    Alex Cappa?

  14. Pryda... sec147 Says:

This makes me hesitate a second are you subtly implying the dline isn’t what we’re expecting it to be. I think we’ll see soon enough in the preseason games

  15. Bucsfanman Says:

Sounds like pretty decent work by the O-line outside of Curry and Allen.

  16. SOEbuc Says:

    Mike10

    “Alex Cappa”

    I second that.
