Haters Might Want To Chill

July 26th, 2018

Better than you may think.

Joe understands a sect of Bucs fans cannot wait for the Bucs to cut the cord with America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

The way these fans freak about Jameis, you would think he is a combination of Mike Glennon and Stewart McClown all rolled into one.

The stat geeks essentially have two words for these folks: Chill out!

Joe earlier this summer brought word from FootballPerspective.com that has data to demonstrate Jameis was the most underrated quarterback in the NFL last season.

Well, the Football Outsiders crowd has weighed in and for the rabble that wants to #BlameJameis for the putrid 2017 season, they claim the haters are firing at the wrong target. Jet-flyin’, kiss–stealin‘, data-analyzin’, Bucs-film-studyin’, data-driven, limousine-ridin’ Thomas Bassinger of the Tampa Bay Times has the details.

The Bucs’ decline from 9-7 in 2016 to 5-11 in 2017 has fed a perception that Winston, who is entering his fourth season, is not improving. Several metrics, both traditional and advanced, show otherwise. Football Outsiders notes that last season Winston set career highs in completion percentage (63.8), interception percentage (2.5), yards per attempt (7.9), passer rating (92.2), passing yards per game (269.5).

Not just that, but Jameis also threw for the highest percentage of first downs last year in the NFL. That’s right: more than Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Matty Ice, Ben Roethlisberger — you name a quarterback. Jameis led the league.

But yeah, let’s run off the best quarterback this franchise has ever had at 24 because he plays on a lousy team and the coaching staff didn’t get the most out of the most talented team the Bucs have had in years — an evaluation that came straight from the mouth of Bucs coach Dirk Koetter.

As Joe has written several times, Jameis didn’t play defensive end; Jameis didn’t play cornerback and Jameis sure as hell wasn’t kicking.

Winston does have potential, but I think we will have a QB controversy when Fitz goes 3-1. (He will also get the start at Chicago since Winston won’t have had any practice time and the next week is a bye.)

  2. m0j0 Says:

Anybody watching could see the improvements in his game late in the season last year. He’s definitely turning the corner and will continue to improve as long as he can stay healthy.

  3. stpetebucsfan Says:

I’m a fan of Jameis talent but not his decisions on or off the field.

Again if he can go all Randy Moss…lay low and begin a serious rehabilitation of his trashed reputation he could still turn all of this around. IF the Glazers are truly going to give him another chance and haven’t already made up their minds.

Again this is NOT about Jameis talent…it’s a simple business decision..and it will be made by excellent businessmen. Do they trust him personally or not?

Through all of this the worst thing Jameis may have done is not call the Bucs immediately after talking to his attorney…should have happened within days of the Uber ride not years later. The Bucs should have been Jameis second call right after his attorney. That lack of trust on Jameis part had to be felt by the Glazers.

As far as #3’s talent and coachability it would be great to have been a fly on the wall when the Glazers, Licht and Koetter sat down to review their options.

Did Koetter go to bat for Jameis behind the scenes? Koetter has already shown he is a good soldier so if Licht and the Glazers want to stick with Jameis I’m sure Koetter will still do his best. Just love to know his real opinion though.

  4. Eric Says:

Basically the last quarter of last year he played as well as any QB in the NFL.

Look at the masterful winning drive vs. Saints.

Don’t be idiotic bucs, he is not easily replaceable. Anybody that puts Fitz in the same league just doesn’t know football.

Or any other QB we have had.

That’s dandy, Joe, but usually, it means we are playing behind the sticks and facing third and long passing situations which leads to more turnovers. The goal is to keep teams off-balance (contrary to Koetters popular belief that predictability does not matter)!

    ——————————————-

There is no qb controversy if Fitz goes 3-0. Fitz isn’t the future of the franchise’ Winston is. Do you think the Eagles continue to play Foles if he goes 3-0, if Wentz isn’t ready to start the season? No. Simple as that.

No point to chill out. All JW has is stats going for him and only a few. But the ones that matter he doesn’t have.

  9. T REX Says:

    Turnovers?

I’ll say it again. 6-10 or worse and JW, Licht and Dirk are all job hunting.

Cut him. This is about more than football.

Agreed he played better Eric, however you can’t just discount his 3 picks before that TD. That’s the main issue with him on the field in which he has to get much better. We shall see in game 4.

    Jameis is no Wentz.

  13. Lunchbox Says:

Joe, I think the stats you’ve shown support your argument to keep Jameis. However, other stats tell a different story, like W-L record. Of course there are many factors besides qb play to determine that, but how about INT’s? Several of his interceptions came from passes that seemed to show a very questionable decision making process. The same questionable decisions that led to other well documented incidents. How about his fumbles? When you take these things into account, it’s a little easier to see how some people are not so enamored with Jameis.

  14. Ghingus Kwon Says:

Love the Jameis pic. Doing his best Bernie Mack impression.

“Sexual assault has absolutely no connection to stats. The people who want this snake oil salesman out are people who have a soul. Enablers keep pumping out stats because you don’t want to talk about transgressions. Good lord man.”

So, are these ‘enablers’ the reason he cleaned up his act for 2 1/2 years after this heinous act? Funny how this world shattering act was so bad the victim saw no need to report it to anyone other than her erstwhile ‘employer. Yes it was bad behavior, yes he was punished, but let’s have a bit of perspective here. There used to be a concept that a person was punished and it was over unless they showed clear evidence they hadn’ Learned their lesson. The concept that a person can’t be punished enough for a transgression is stupid and wasteful.

Jameis would have to have a complete meltdown for the Glazers to give him the apple and roadmap.

Besides, have they not picked up his 5th year option?

I think you are getting a little mixed up on the time line. Jameis did not talk to his attorney until years later either. So far as he knew for two years, there was no reason to.

Not until the accusation was made public.

And so far as reporting it immediately to the Bucs, he wasn’t required to. That NFL Policy was put in place later.

You are right, but also keep in mind that in the past, we never had a QB capable of doing so.

  22. Defense Rules Says:

Yup, IT’S ALL ABOUT JAMEIS. Meanwhile we have some breaking news: Another 89 players reported to Bucs training camp this morning. Follow-up at 11 PM (or later).

    Patrickbucs Says
“Agreed he played better Eric, however you can’t just discount his 3 picks before that TD. That’s the main issue with him on the field in which he has to get much better. We shall see in game 4.”

But you also have to consider the fact that he was hit more than any other QB in the league, had throwing shoulder issues, and no running game to easy the QB pressure.

If a QB is hit constantly, he’s going to fumble and throw picks. If anything, blame the offensive line. Blame the defense for blowing leads at the end of games. Yes, Jameis has his share of blame too, but no QB is perfect.

Waaaay back before we drafted him, I said on this very website that gunslingers throw a lot of picks. I predicted it would be an ongoing issue with Jameis. I was right, but I also understand that if he had good blocking and a running game, his picks and fumbles would be far less.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

A few weeks ago, I went back and rewatched some games from last season. Even with his injury, which bothered him from game two forward, he was not completely at fault.

Yes, he made some stupid throws. He’s young and that’s to be expected. But the biggest issue for him was the defense getting to him so quickly. There were a lot of times when the person who hit him was not even blocked, and hit him hard.

Every time he seemed to be on the mend, he would take a big hit and be set back again. That’s why they finally made him miss three games. The offensive line wasn’t playing well enough for him to heal.

  25. DB55 Says:

Just further proof that these fans don’t know jack.

  26. D1 Says:

    Bonzai,

I just want to clarify your statement.
The Bucs finished the year ranked 20th in sacks and
    23th in QB hits.
JW is ranked in the top of time in the pocket to throw.

I am aware that the line often stunk out loud in protecting the rush, but JW wasn’t hit more or took more sacks than anyone in the league.

Interesting that no one puts any responsibility on JW for either the hits or sacks.
Holding the ball too long contributed to the sack and hit totals. More important and always unnoticed is the # of plays JW is not making or is wrong in his protection adj. How often these two issues resulted in hits or sacks I have no idea. But if they contributed to 5 sacks and 10 hits then the rankings for the year are in the teens.

No matter how you look at it ….JW wasn’t sacked or hit the most. Keep in mind that the Bucs Sacks and hits totals were right about the same as the super bowl champions eagles . And everyone agrees that their offense and offensive coordinator is cutting edge genius.

I’ve said on the record that what Winston has been his first 3 years – if that’s as good as it gets – it’s still a top 1/3 starting QB deserving of a 2nd contract – and still the best QB the franchise has ever had.

Not sure where you get the group of “sheep” from supposedly saying he needs 4-5 years to develop…. If he year 3 was his best; I’ll take a 92-93 type rated passer over the sh1t we’ve had historically. That was a season in which he was hurt…

If Winston is run out of town it will be due to the off-field sh1t. Or because he absolutely implodes this year Josh Freeman style.

It won’t be because he didn’t develop well enough his first 3 seasons. That’s been fine given all circumstances of the team. 4 defensive / FG chokes away from 2 winning seasons in his 2nd / 3rd years with a ton of game winning drives; despite no top defense or run game in that time – outside of a 6 game defensive streak out of 32 games.

  31. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @mizzle

Exactly. NOt sure wtf realist is talking about with supposed “sheep” acting like this guy has been a bum that needs to massively improve in years 4/5

  32. Reality_43 Says:

    @ D1

You say Jameis was ranked near the top with Time to Throw and he was at #10 but that is more of him scrambling. Otherwise how is Ryan Fitzpatrick ranked 25th with the same line?

  33. Reality_43 Says:

@Mizzle I put the same stat like 3 weeks ago but just the 1st 3 seasons as that is what Jameis has played.

    Well done!!

There is absolutely no merit to running Jameis out of town based on his play.
And if you want to do it based on a wrong doing, please keep throwing the 1st stone and see how that works out for you in life.

  34. Tony LA Says:

You know, Joe, I was spouting those EXACT stats all earlier in the offseason when I went on my FIX THE TRENCHES, FIX THE BUCS campaign (which is exactly what they did). I actually called on you in the comments to write something about those stats to support Jameis.

The reason I kept saying FIX THE TRENCHES FIX THE BUCS is because I felt the team already has the right QB in place and just needed a better O-line to protect him and defense.

    Better late than never!!

  35. Trench War Says:

    two words

between the 20’s Jameis was as good as the best but

  36. D1 Says:

    Reality,

I have seen 2 separate stats on ttt, one has JW ranked 2nd, another 7th.
I agree that JW often scrambles to buy time. But the bulk stat method smoothes out the highs and lows. One stat that is different is long ball accuracy from a clean pocket. The metric is % of attempts from a clean pocket. JW is in 65% .
Again, not that JW is not pressured. Just not nearly as some people claim.

    Fitzpatrick…..not sure what you’re trying to infer…

  37. gman Says:

Only one stat matters….comparing his stats to Favre or Brady makes you look ridiculous….totally different game now….but he is not a winner in his time in Tampa…that you cannot deny
