What’s Wrong With Jameis?

June 26th, 2018

Breakdown.

Yesterday Joe wrote how the tentative three-game suspension of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston could set back the chemistry-building between Jameis and wide receiver DeSean Jackson.

Doug Farrar of Bleacher Report typed you can just about bank on it.

An X’s and O’s guy, Farrar did a nice piece of what could be preventing Jameis from taking the proverbial next step as a top shelf NFL quarterback.

Farrar’s piece echoed Bill Polian’s take on Jameis: He can be reckless with the ball because he is so confident in his arm and doesn’t recognize coverages that quickly.

Farrar broke down the tape of the Bucs’ curb-stomping at the hands of the Vikings last year. It seemed Jameis, per Farrar, was locked in on Evans on a pick where Jameis did not recognize he had Jackson open for a touchdown on the same play, and Adam Humphries wide open as well.

Farrar did a nice job on the breakdown. And he feels that, yes, when Jameis and Jackson need to be working on chemistry, the tentative three-game suspension will do the duo no favors.

What Winston needs going into his fourth season is as much time to develop as possible and enough in-game reps to reap the rewards of that development. He also needs the time to get things together with his receivers, especially Jackson.

But having put himself in an untenable situation with this suspension, Winston now stands just as much of a chance of regression through distraction and inactivity. Never mind the off-field stuff, which presents its own potential disasters—on the field, Jameis Winston must take care of business in ways he hasn’t if he is ever to repay his team’s trust in him.

  1. Casey Morgan Says:

At this point I’ll take the 35 year old QB over JW. We can win if we just distribute the ball to the open guy– even if it is a check down…

  2. SoFloBuc Says:

    What a mess!!!

  3. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Joe – any chance you could post a positive article about someone/something about the Bucs? Its getting awfully dark reading about our boneheaded QB thread after thread with no new information to share.

  4. Jff Says:

    He’s a narcissistic sociopath.

  5. AlteredEgo Says:

His mechanics are a mess too…nothing short of a whole year off will get his attention…hopefully he can work with a shrink and a QB coach until this time next year…simply can’t have the Jameis Soap Opera choking the life out of the team this year….Jameis did this to himself…he needs to understand that first and completely…

  6. Dewey Selmon Says:

On the field or off the field?

  7. Kobe Faker Says:

MEME Evans has the worst yac yards in the NFL

MEME Evans has the worst catch percentage in the NFL at 53%

However unbelivevably JBF calls MEME a possesion reciever??

And our Licht Bulb makes MEME the highest paid reciever of over 18 milly per year

    “Yikes”

    Kobe Faker

  8. Joseph Mamma Says:

Jameis doesn’t recognize coverages that quickly. Exactly what the uber driver said.

  9. Architek Says:

I just wonder why we are cursed as a franchise? Druggy Freeman, now this mess. My God this is just sad.

  10. Westernbuc Says:

Dirk Koetter can win with Fitzpatrick if the defense is respectable and he doesn’t make a lot of turnovers. If Bucs go 2-1 there’s no guarantee Jameis will start again. As Dirk says, best ability is availability

  11. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

One of my sports friends is a Forensic Psychologist. He thinks Jameis may be Bipolar, and/or is an Alcoholic.

  12. Dooshlarue Says:

I’m guessing Coach K is secretly liking his starting QB Fitzpatrick.
He has to stay neutral I know, but he’s gotta like his odds going with a vet that listens to his coaches and does just enough to win without all the drama and turnovers.

  13. Joe Says:

Joe – any chance you could post a positive article about someone/something about the Bucs?

A positive post about a 5-11 team that just lost it’s starting quarterback and facing the toughest schedule to open a season in nearly 40 years???

Sorry, Joe is not an illusionist. HOWEVER, there are positive-leaning articles on the home page here now if you actually read them.

    Smoke-and-mirrors articles is a specialty of Buccaneers.com.

  14. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    Sc

If joe wrote a positive article about this piss poor franchise with no hope for the future it would be purely fiction. Nothing positive has happened with bucs franchise in nearly 2 decades.

Reality is truly a beotch for the weak.

  15. firethecannons Says:

Yeah these articles are not helping–very negative
Anyway, Winston will either make it happen or not, his whole career is on the line. I think Godwin will have a breakout year.
Hope we get the word from NFL today, better to get it and process it sooner rather than have it drawn out further, man the NFL could care less about us Bucs fans. We are worth nothing to them. I am getting back into college football and will make that the priority game–I dont have to pay to watch it either.Fock the NFL!!!!!!!

  16. Joe Says:

He has to stay neutral I know, but he’s gotta like his odds going with a vet that listens to his coaches and does just enough to win without all the drama and turnovers.

What QB you talking about? Did the Bucs just trade for such a QB that the team has yet to announce?

  17. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Good morning Reality – Mommy come down the basement and wake you up?

    Pancakes this morning?

  18. SC Bucs Fan Says:

And Joe, you still let TMax post here under a new name so you at least support illusionists

  19. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

What was mindblowing was when I realized that NO Bucs players are on the 100 best players in the NFL list.
I so much disagree with that, but it just goes to show the disrespect Tampa is shown these days.
We have become the Cleveland of the NFL, and Jameis is our Johnny Manziel.

  20. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    SC Bucs Fan

No we are serving up fried religious hypocrite with a side of denial. Right up your alley

  21. Joe Says:

Yeah these articles are not helping–very negative

So Bucs fans should be celebrating in the streets because they have to rely on Ryan Fitzpatrick to save their season???

  22. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning

Bucs were a joke way before jameis. Every player and coach that comes to town turns to crap. On field results prove it. No one falls in love with mediocre losers like a bucfan

  23. TJ Says:

When I see Jameis play at times I think, “Is Byron Leftwich 2.0?”

  24. Dooshlarue Says:

    Really Joe?
Oh yeah I forgot, your “that” Joe.
    2-1 vs. 3-10
    Remember?
I’m actually excited about the season more now than before.
A hopefully better defense, a new RB and a QB who isn’t an idiot under center.

    I like our chances.
Let our Soiled Messiah sit and watch…… and hopefully learn.

  25. Jim Says:

So, what if the suspension turns out to be 6 games? I think there’s a good chance that happens.

  26. SB Says:

    LOL

  27. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Joe

Can we please start moving forward!!!!!!! Please start asking NFL types their top picks for new GM’s!!!!!! Post those “positive” stories and We would like to see who the Bucs will pick with a top 3 pick in NFL mock drafts!!!!!

We will likely see a huge house cleaning at One Buc so the owners can sell the “fresh start” for 2019!!!!!!!!! I hope that team Glazer is already lining up a short list for GM interviews so the new GM can get a head start and be evaluating the roster by week 9!!!!!!!! Maybe even start players for the future, like DS76 at right tackle!!!!!! moves like this will hopefully jump start the rebuild and new regime for 2019!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. Greg Says:

What’s wrong with Jameis? Sex offender, liar, bad decisions, inaccurate, over talker and under deliverer!

  29. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Joe he’s talking about the same Fitzpatrick that broke out and went like 10-6 with the jets a few years ago. He’s hoping and praying that that Fitzpatrick shows up in September.

  30. Bucnjim Says:

Two words describe his problems in football and life: Decision Making!

  31. AlteredEgo Says:

Jameis needs a year away from football….not as punishment but for treatment

  32. Pete I Says:

What is wrong with Jameis is no little thing!

  33. Dooshlarue Says:

    Sorry Joe, I forgot.

If a team loses their starting QB then the season is over.
You simply CANNOT win without a “franchise QB”
A wise blog owner said that I do believe.
I lose sight of that sometimes…….

  34. Fire the glazers Says:

I don’t know why some people are calling for the heads of our GM and head coach…
I think they are actually doing a pretty decent job.
It’s the play and off field issues that have caused problems with JW…
Bucs should not have a losing season this year.
    JW starting or not…
    No more excuses.
You think if Koetter and Licht get fired after this year, the next coach and GM are going to keep JW around???

  35. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    Gregg,

Your description sounds more like gmc than JW both have been charged with the same number of crimes one has been over talking and under delivering for 9 years.

Jameis has not been proven guilty by anyone but incompetent media and the same soft losers who hated him already.

  36. jmarkbuc Says:

    Jff

    “He’s a narcissistic sociopath.

It’s Joe’s fault.. He’s called him America’s Qb so many times JW started to believe it…

  37. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

All you armature psychiatrists and legal experts are beyond laughable. Innocent before proven guilty used to matter now its just a bunch of incompetent journalism and keyboard warrior jurors

  38. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Reality what is armature? Teach me a new word.

  39. jmarkbuc Says:

    Tmax-is-a-biatch

There is no police report, there is no criminal investigation (hopefully there isn’t one on the horizon). There will be no adjudication of guilt or innocence.

The Shield will mete out the punishment, that and the court of public opinion. Neither is bound by law.

    Jameis is an idiot.

  40. AlteredEgo Says:

I want Jameis to become the QB he thinks he is…
and the person he wants people to believe he is…

  41. Ghastly Bucs (formerly Skyline Crew) Says:

Unfortunately, we are probably looking at more than a 3 game suspension. It seems there are more articles out there against Jameis and what he “supposedly” did.

Seeing articles about cutting our losses and moving on with a different QB. Wouldn’t surprise me if that happened. Why can’t Jameis stay out of trouble?

  42. feelthepewterpower Says:

I don’t excuse his behavior, however, it warrants a second chance. No violence involved, just stupidity, hormones, youth and immaturity, and excessive alcohol from the sound of it. Needs to avoid the party lifestyle now that he is a father and to save his career. Other than that, he should be forgiven if he is truly sorry, tells the truth regarding the matters, and continues to walk a straightforward path for his team and his family.

Winston has the ability to win us multiple Super Bowls with the drive, focus and fire. Winston can be among the elite quarterbacks in this league when it is all said and done. He can be the Buccs first franchise quarterback (to get a second a second contract) and turnaround the last ten years of futility. It is foolhardy to give-up on Jameis. He knows there is no more room for error. Let’s rally behind him, encourage him to do the right thing, and be our brother’s keeper.

  43. I’m a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

I will go on record today 26 June 2018 to say JW3 WILL NEVER win a Super Bowl in Tampa!!! I just hope this crap is not true so the Brother at least gets the opportunity to try for that SB and right his ship!!!! Good luck man!!!!!

  44. unbelievable Says:

Oh look, tmax-is-a-b!tch is back accusing GMC of being a sexual predator again.

Isn’t that what got your dumb@ss run last time and the reason for your new little username? (Which hasnt fooled anyone)

You should really talk to a professional about the unhealthy obsession with your man crush. It’s pathetic.

  45. Tony LA Says:

Everyone that is writing that the Bucs can win with Fitz are absolutely delusional. Let me check how many times he’s made the playoffs in his entire career….
    ZERO

Let me check how he played in the biggest game of his career to get the Jets into the playoffs…
Complete (almost historical) 4th quarter meltdown that single-handedly lost the game. Don’t argue this – if he had simply knelt down on every play in the 4th quarter they would have fared better.

This guy is a perennial loser – just good enough to keep you i games and then lose at the end. STOP IT! That is such a loser mentality.

The Bucs have two and only two choices:
    1. Go all in with Jameis. And that means giving him EVERY rep in the offseason so that he progresses and improves in his 4th year. If you take away his reps, he regresses, and for what… so a journeyman backup can play just well enough for us to lose a few close games? Only to be replaced by a guy who didn’t get the reps needed to improve??
That’s EXACTLY what would happen and if you think otherwise I’ve got some ocean-front property in Arizona to sell you.

    2. Go get a younger guy at QB to come in and really compete with both Fitz and then Jameis. Create a culture of absolute competition in which nothing is gifted to anyone. Right now the starter job is gifted to Jameis- who has proven he can’t handle the off the field stuff. And then, when he gets suspended, the job is just gifted to a 3 5 year old journeyman who has never one anything??

Loserville is what that equates to. Run the Bucs like successful businesses run themselves. Nothing is gifted. Competition breeds success.

  46. Bucs Sam Says:

He believed his own hype and is still stuck there.

JW thinks it’s just a matter of time before he’s in the HOF. He doesn’t get it.

He’s just like my smart kids who can show up and get decent grades in school but don’t understand that just that little bit of extra would make for great grades.

My kids are teenagers, JW acts just like them. Sadly, I have predicted since the draft this course. Can he be great one day? Maybe, but his ego is surely in the way of that. And his off the field antics….. sigh.

JW will erase 7 – 10 years potential playoffs and we are only in the middle of it.

Koetter and Licht and probably his next victims. Then he gets a new contract and the shenanigans continues. Next GM, drafts our next QB of the future and JW is benched behind the next opportunity.

If we are lucky, the Bucs can make the playoffs again in perhaps 3 or 4 years….

The Bucs currently have the second longest playoff drought. We are 10 years out, and the Brown are 15. Yep, that’s right we are only a little better than the browns. Ugh.

  47. AlteredEgo Says:

  48. passthebuc Says:

We are not a cursed franchise. The top of the organization just does not do it right.
You need a president of football operations and the owners need to go fishing.
Next, pay the money for the best scouting available.

You then build a team from the foundation up. That means the QB is the last, albeit the most important piece. You start with the trenches on both sides. That way you give your QB a chance to live. You also give your back 7 on D a chance to grow without too much pain.

This is not brain surgery, its football. I have seen better organizations at the high school level.

  49. theodore Says:

@passthebuc We are cursed! Just like the Eagles!

  50. Buccfan37 Says:

So Winston has his pass target in mind as soon as he breaks the huddle, determined to throw to only that receiver regardless of that receivers coverage. It does appear that way. Too zeroed in under pressure to survey the field, thus too many picks while other receivers are briefly open.

    ______________

How many times are we going to keep saying this for Jameis? After every time he gets in trouble, we say this.

  53. firethecannons Says:

So would Tmax be a supporter of Jameis Winston or would he be calling for the Bucs to off wit da head

  54. Jmarkbuc Says:

    JW loves th Eagles

JW and a 2 for Nick Foles

  55. firethecannons Says:

Can you imagine what Kate was thinking and feeling, she has a loud obnoxious huge man in her car in the front seat, he is very intoxicated probably threatening to throw up, then he wants food, and actually thinks he stands a chance at a hook up so he gropes her. I can’t imagine she didn’t get out of the car and go around to his side and open the door and demand he get his big self the fock out of her car.

  56. T REX Says:

Anyone trust the Glazers to pick another GM and coach?

    They suck.

  57. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Fire the cannons

So you think he actually would have gotten his big drunk self out of the car?

  58. AlteredEgo Says:

T Rex …. the GM & HC are safe… all this team needs is a functional QB to take the next step to becoming a Playoff team…. while finding if Jameis or whoever, drat a QB next spring , and let the best player go forward

  59. DE Bucs Fan Says:

Only half kidding: Go full on drama mode and bring in Kaepernick. Still really hoping Jameis can develop into the person/player he envisions himself. Seems like a good person at heart.
Bottom line is QB Limbo is worse than having No QB. At this point I’m fine with rolling the dice with Fitz or Griffin. It’s a team game, we got some talent.

  60. Jmarkbuc Says:

More and more I think JW wants you to believe he is a good person at heart. It’s all an act. The Good Reverend Jameis.

Baptized on Monday, Groping Uber drivers a week later, while his Fiancée is in the hotel room.

Jameis is not a good man. And an average NFL QB.

  61. Defense Rules Says:

Aaah yes, it’s STILL all about Jameis. And if it stays this way, no one will give a hoot about training camp or the Bucs. For heaven’s sake, put this whole sordid affair to bed.The poor horse has been whipped, stomped on & butchered … he’s dead. Let it go.

And Tony LA, your statement “Everyone that is writing that the Bucs can win with Fitz are absolutely delusional” is bogus. Fitz went 2-1 last year because the team rallied around him. They didn’t expect him to be The Savior or to be a 1-man-show. The offense wasn’t fantastic & neither was the defense for that matter, BUT … together they pulled out 2 wins. In those 2 wins (Jets & Dolphins), the Bucs (1) won the 1st down battle; (2) won the turnover battle; and (3) won the TOP battle. Won the 1st down battle & the turnover battle in the loss to Atlanta also, and barely lost the TOP battle. Fitz played OK, but nothing spectacular to be sure. He managed the game & didn’t turn the ball over is probably about the best anyone could say. BUT … it was good enough as long as the defense held up (against the Falcons, it didn’t & we lost).

Interestingly, Murray FGs played a HUGE role. In those 3 games he was 8-for-9 (all but 1 inside the 40 BTW). What’s sad (and a continuing hit on our offense IMO) is that the average of those FG-ending drives was the 16-yd-line. Bucs made it inside the Red Zone 8-of-9 times on those FG attempts then stalled. Not a good look, but hopefully the running game will do better this year.

  62. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I may be taking a break from Buccaneers news. The constant negativity is just too much. There are people posting comments here who have NEVER posted here before, just to bash Jameis.

Jameis is not suspended for groping.

Jameis is suspended for not reporting the accusation. Huge difference.

  63. Ghastly Bucs Says:

We’ll find out how long he is suspended when the final report comes out. Doesn’t look good in his favor. No one to help support his claims. Being in a car by himself with the Uber driver. Not pretty.

  64. Anonymous Says:

Everyone talks about this incident like it happened yesterday! This all happened 2 years ago! I don’t care who I offend but if this was a serious thing that happened why wasn’t this brought to the police, why weren’t real charges filed against Jameis? Everything that has been said hasn’t been proven, Zooey but innocent until proven guilty! The 2 years since, nothing has been said about Jameis off the field. Remember, Tennessee made the playoffs in spite of Mariotta not because of him, for those making the argument we picked the wrong QB!

  65. AlteredEgo Says:

Anom…it does not seem to be about the “incident”….it seems to be All About Jameis answered questions about the incident….I am really worried about peoples critical thinking and reading comprehension …..it is not about the story headline…it is about the details

  66. frank n furter Says:

    So…. Jamies for President!?

  67. Ghastly Bucs Says:

Anonymous…it doesn’t matter that it happened 2 years ago. The #MeToo movement has brought out a bunch of women who are now talking. I know it is easy for us to say on here that she should have said something immediately, but we weren’t there and we don’t know what she went through or the impact this has had on her life. Does it make it right? NO, but this is the world we live in now.

    JOE

Everybody is focused in on all of the negative stuff surrounding America’s Crotchgrabber and Buc Cancer on the roster Jameis Winston but there really are still positives and good things to write about. Licht may have had his best draft and free agency yet and some big holes were filled. I for one am looking very forward to watching some of our new and young Bucs play. Let’s not let the Winston embarrassment and humiliation drown all of that out

  71. Duke Says:

    Jmarc,

No point or subtext. Simply a public persona vs private and the distance between the two sides.

  72. firethecannons Says:

The articles are negative, all we got, I appreciate them very much anyway, sorry Joe for complaining but it is all just sinking in now. I honestly do not have faith in Ryan Fitzpatrick to do anything but lose. We will have to rely heavily on defense for excitement going forward and the running game–man that would help huge. We can win if we can take them out of the picture offensively. I think about defense and get optimistic–time for coach Buck to make a miracle!

  73. Bucballbaby84 Says:

I like the kid don’t get me wrong but if we’re talking wins to losses he’s in the same league so far as Josh Freeman. This is his year to prove it. I have no doubt in my mind the Bucs will have no problem letting him go if he doesn’t get the W’s this season.

  74. jmarkbuc Says:

    Duke

    Then absolutely…

At least so far, JW isn’t using roofie’s and having little boys over for sleepovers.

But what he is vs. what he wants us to think he is are completely different and I think he knows it, it’s not accidental…America’s Reverend act is so contrived…
