Jameis Says He’s A “Relationship” QB

June 13th, 2018

Jameis explains

Digging deeper into the chemistry experiment that is DeSean Jackson and America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, is an interesting exercise, especially when Jameis himself chimes in.

That was the case on the Ira Kaufman Podcast yesterday, when Jameis sat down with Joe and Ira for an extended chat.

Jameis explained that he truly believes QB-receiver chemistry is an extended process.

“One thing about connection, I think we all as a team, you guys seen it Year 1 with Mike Evans, when you have a quarterback who loves relationships, like I have great relationships with Cam Brate, Mike Evans, Adam Humphries, it takes a year,” Jameis said.

“I mean, my first pass was to Adam Humphries, a pick-6. You know, but everyone talks about me and Adam Humphries’ connection right now.  You know, so you grow to have a relationship. It definitely evolves and it definitely gets better from Year 1 to Year 2. And definitely D-Jax being around some of these OTAs, being in Tampa more, us getting a better relationship off the field, I think it’s going to lead to some great, drastic improvements.”

It’s interesting to hear Jameis verbalize this. There’s no question that chemistry grows between QBs and receivers, but does it really take a year?

Take a peak into Bucs history. Look at how Josh Freeman and rookie Mike Williams lit it up for 11 touchdowns in 2010. In 2012, Vincent Jackson was a newcomer to Freeman and the Bucs and had a monster season, the very best of his career for 1,384 yards. In 2014, rookie Mike Evans caught 12 touchdowns and the Bucs changed playcallers and used two starting quarterbacks.

The whole need-more-time thing is odd to Joe. Hopefully, Jameis is correct and Jackson returns to his traditional form as one of truly feared deep threats in the NFL. It would also be nice to see him in the red zone. Jameis threw to Jackson just once in red-zone possessions last year, whereas Ryan Fitzpatrick threw it to him far more often in just three games, including two touchdowns.

relationships are good but creative playcalling is better…..

I’m with 813 on this. Koetter needs to STEP HIS GAME UP with the playcalling or GIVE UP CALLING PLAYS. We have all personnel that we need to have a TOP 5 SCORING OFFENSE.

    #NO EXCUSES

Play calling sometimes hasn’t been good…..some others QB hasn’t been accurate…sometimes wr failed, and the running game was bad and unstable…… SO please to blame just the playcalling…..U never fail beacuse of one factor……. Everybody knows that

  4. ndog Says:

That is true zzbuc BUT the playcalling is what is responsible for putting each player in the best opportunity for THEM to be successful based upon THEIR skillset. Not forcing a square peg into a round hole.

better play calling could’ve help cover up some inaccuracies from the QB….better playcalling could’ve produced a better run game…..boot legs…reverses….wildcat….

when the playcalling is trash, you can expect other aspects of the offense to be trash…

Note sure why its odd that it would take a year to build chemistry. Djax himself said in a article on the 4 letter “it took years of building chemistry with cousins. We had multiple years of playing together and getting the timing down”…..etc. I have been pointing out all offseason that it took winston and evans one year before that chemistry took effect. Not to hard to understand

Note JW never had a problem connecting to Louis Murphy and now Godwin soooo without throwing anyone under the bus…some of the needing a year depends on the receiver.

I love 3, I just wish he was more consistent

Jameis wants this team to win the most. Working and trying to gel with Jameis in the offseason was the best thing possible for DJax. He knows guys on this team coming into his second year now, and seems like he’s been working hard. It’s not just the Glazers saying we’ll give you $30 million to run streaks now and I highly doubt that’s gonna be the plan this year. Thinking he now knows he is a part of this team and wants to win with these guys.

  10. SOEbuc Says:

More deep post routes so Jameis doesn’t have to totally bomb it 50 yards and try to perfectly connect with the smaller DJax. Though I would love it if they have learned to do that in the offseason.

  11. Lamarcus Says:

Why did Licht sign djx and your qb is a relationship guy? So basically it wasn’t going to work right away and Koetter to make sense of having djx force fed him with bombs from a broken cannon which became of course inaccurate.

I always thought (I’m no NFL coach) is for the offense should be going Me13 first and early and then mix in brate, Godwin hump short attack bring those safeties in and bombs away like every other team does. Safeties play way too high when djx is in the game
