It’s All About Eating Ws

June 20th, 2018

Eat more Ws.

On face value this is simply preposterous.

But pull away the onion skins and it makes one cry. Some folks are actually willingly using the word “bust” and Pro Bowler Jameis Winston’s good name in the same sentence.

Even Gary Davenport, author of such rubbish for Bleacher Report, admits that fact. It’s borderline insane to call Jameis a bust or suggest he is about to bust out.

But this is what happens when a guy who lost a grand total of one game in college isn’t getting wins on the NFL level.

While Winston threw a career-low 11 interceptions in 2017, he also missed three game and still hit double-digits in picks again. He has averaged almost 15 interceptions per season. Winston’s 19 scoring passes in 2017 were a career-low and nine fewer than the season before, and even taking into account his missed time (three games), his touchdown percentage was down relative to 2016.

Then there’s the one stat that sticks out like a sore thumb with Winston. Wins—or the lack thereof.

And really, you cannot #BlameJameis. That joke of a 2017 defense, that was so bad a sober Bucs fan was outraged enough to throw a $10 lukewarm Miller Lite at a cheerleader, coughed away four games in which the Bucs had the lead in the fourth quarter. Is that Jameis’ fault?

If the kicking situation wasn’t such a friggin’ circus the past three years, the Bucs would have beaten the Belicheats last year. Was that Jameis’ fault?

That’s five wins right there flushed down the toilet. Turn those five losses into wins, and we’re having a fully different conversation right now.

Still, Jameis even admits he has to find a way to get this team wins, as he stated on a recent edition of the famed “Ira Kaufman Podcast.” Otherwise, folks will start thinking of Jameis as a polished, intense, highly-driven version of Josh Freeman.

If only the o-line protected JW3 like joe does, then he would never be touched, let alone hurt!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep fixing the “real” problem!!!!!! The roster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Dooshlarue Says:

Yeah I read that article yesterday.
Funny he doesn’t mention the ungodly amount of fumbles last year…..and yeah I know NONE of those fumbles were actually JW’s fault.

    Hargreaves got mentioned too.

  3. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Jameis has to get better, specifically at not fumbling.

But yes, that defense last year was historically bad and even a HOF QB would have had limited success.

Brees couldnt get past 7-9 for multiple years until the Saints finally fixed the D. 5-11 isnt much worse folks. Again Jameis has areas he has to improve on, but W-L record for QBs is misleading when you have the worst running game and the worst defense in the league

  4. Casual Observer Says:

I agree about the close games. Close with a lousy D. IMO (my guess), the D will be impressively stronger this year – for several reasons. So, a good chance for a winning season.

  5. SCBucsFan Says:

The offense can blame the defense, and visa versa. No one was not to blame. Both sides need to improve this year.

  6. The Buc Realist Says:

You know what does not help a defense that is thin because of injuries and struggling???? Being the 6th worst in offensive turnovers!!!!! Only 5 teams gave the ball away more!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!

  7. BucNole Says:

Personally I think we have a good roster this year.
Know its up to the coaches to devise a scheme to put these players in the best possible position to make the most of their talents
Im not optimistic – except maybe for the DL coach who has a little fire in him

  8. 813bucboi Says:

    you know what doesn’t help a team at all??????……coaches who don’t adjust!!!!!!…..

worst defense in the league smitty!!!!!…

  9. '79Defense Says:

All excellent and very valid points Joe. But as we all know, some people don’t like valid points to get in the way of their criticisms and narrow mindedness.

that was one of the many reasons loser lovie was fired!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!

  11. 813bucboi Says:

so Winston threw double digits picks again….career low in TD’s and TD percentage…..tons of fumbles…..indecisive at times but yet folks say he’s progressing because of completion percentage….BS….lol…

Winston has plateaued under dirk…..Winston calling his own play proved that vs the saints…..and the lousy 4vert scheme is outdated just like smitty’s defense…..

    NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  13. Bobby M. Says:

How many wins do you calculate if Winston doesn’t turn the ball over every single game at a rate of nearing 2 TOs per 1 game? Aaron Rodgers avgs 1 TO for every 2 games….His defenses weren’t remotely stellar nor was his receivers. I’m certain in GB kicks were missed as well….The defense was bad but it looked much worse to constant TOs from the offense either in the red zone or on the other side of the field giving the opponents easy scoring opportunities.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’ve been all for Jameis…..saying give him a running game and at least an average defense and he can win a championship.

I will say that if he can’t get a winning season with this team (no matter the schedule, no matter the division) I will be very concerned going forward.

His Uber incident in particular not informing the team and the absence of winning will not bode well for his renewal contract….

  15. BuccaneEric75 Says:

813, Winston didn’t call his own play. He just threw to the WR that the play didn’t call for. Big difference.

  16. Joseph Mamma Says:

So when we get a better defense and a better kicking game, then we can blame Jameis for the losses? Or if he was only drafted by a really great team, he’d be a great quarterback.

  17. Lord Cornelius Says:

“Being the 6th worst in offensive turnovers!!!!! Only 5 teams gave the ball away more!!!!!!”

So tired of this point and super cherry picked stat. Here’s the full picture:

The Bucs offense turned the ball over 5 more times than the average team in 2017.

The Bucs offense punted 10 LESS times than the average NFL team last year.

The offense helped the defense by 5 net possessions in terms of weighing turnovers vs sustaining drives vs NFL averages.

Period. The defense was bottom 2 in both yards and points given up on average per drive. That’s not the offense’s fault.

Neither was letting Tyrod Taylor pass down the field for a quick score to tie the game when the Bills were the worst pass offense in the league basically.

Neither was letting Brett f*cking Hundley lead packers lead a FG drive to go to OT and then immediatley score a TD on their first drive.

Neither was letting Cam Newton march down the field to score a go-ahead game-winning TD when we had control of the game in the 4th.

    etc

I’m surprised Jameis fumbles so much. So many women says he has strong hands

  21. Wausa Says:

Jamies needs to rush the QB better and cover better and kick better then the Bucs will win

  22. webster Says:

    @ joe

I read where jameis is #13 on the active list for qbr since 2012 with 1500+ plays. His qbr is better than mariotta, derek carr, carson palmer, cam newton etc. Pretty good spot to be in when you consider he is only 23 at the completion of the season.

  23. 813bucboi Says:

    75

    sure about that?…..I think not!!!!

  24. Jmarkbuc Says:

This is why I am more excited about this season than any season in a long time..

Not because we are going to the SB, because I don’t believe we are, but because it’s make or break time for many on this team, from top to bottom.

We should know one way or the other this year

    #WALKTHEWALK

PS. Jameis, if you should decide to leave, please, please take Webster and biatch with you

  25. Dooshlarue Says:

    Dear Webster,

Please leave this message board as soon as you can.
That way your silly obsession with an average to maybe above QB can blossom the way I know you want.

    I can hear Dekerhoff now…..
