Dirk Koetter No. 26

June 20th, 2018

Slips in rankings.

See what a rotten season can do for one’s street cred?

Last year Bucs coach Dirk Koetter was the toast of the town. He could strut into any halfway decent eatery in Tampa and not have to buy an appetizer. He nearly got the Bucs into the playoffs.

Given the current state of Bucs affairs in the post-Chucky era, Joe doesn’t think it was a coincidence that Koetter and the Bucs teased fans with a playoff berth just months before the cicadas showed up.

Well, the Bucs then proceeded to vomit on themselves last year finishing 5-11. And Koetter’s reputation as a coach? It took a hit in the eyes of national columnists. Bill Bender of the Sporting News ranks Koetter No. 26 in the NFL.

Koetter seemingly had the Buccaneers ready to break through to the playoffs last season, but a 5-11 season set the team back, and it won’t be easy to climb back into contention in the NFC South. Koetter starts this season on the hot seat.

Joe doesn’t think Koetter gives two spits about how Bender or anyone else ranks him. But Joe is confident Koetter is aware how important a winning season is for him and his staff this fall.

As Koetter himself once said when he was the Bucs offensive coordinator, “All that anyone gives a sh*t in this league about is Ws.”

No truer words were ever spoken.

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

These silly offseason rankings are only a view of what happened a year ago!!!! No “real” projection, no “real” thought put into their filler articles!!!!!

The “real” fans are excited by this coaching staff, as the ceiling for the Bucs continues to rise!!!!!! Only the roster and injuries are the major concerns!!!!!! Gone are the days when loser lovie was holding the whole franchise down!!!!!!

Keep fixing the “real” problem!!!!!! The roster!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Buddy Says:

First off-where did #Kluelesskoetter get that terrible hat? It looks straight from the Flea Market. If the equipment manager picked it out he should be fired along with #KluelessKoetter for being horrible at his job. Secondly-#KluelessKoetter better be on the hot seat. He deserves it after last season that was a joke And he better get used to this town always being Chuckys city since he’s the only coach who brought a world championship to it. Plus Chucky punked Team Glazer last fall that was so amazing.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Rankings are practically worthless….I’m sure Koetter could care less.

  5. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

Not a single player, coach, exec or owner of bucs should be ranked against nfl competitors. Maybe a comparison to pop warner organizations but not legit NFL franchises. Everything about this franchise is dead last or down right embarrassing. On field results prive it. You cant rewrite history because you are too mentally weak to handle the truth. The only thing more ignorant than rankings is the fools who still believe pro bowls matter

  6. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    12-4
    7-9
    5-11
    11-5
    4-12
    9-7
    9-7

These are the season results of Jon Gruden in Tampa over 7 seasons…the same Jon Gruden many here wanted to rehire this year.

Koetter has had one bad year as head coach, and people are trying to run him out of town. It’s stupid.

    Why?

Because a by-product of seeing so many coaches here in Tampa is that I’ve realized there is no one better to coach this team than Dirk Koetter. I’m not saying that because I think he’s the best coach ever. I’m saying it because anyone that people can suggest replacing him with is a much bigger gamble.

Dirk Koetter has the locker room behind him. The entire locker room. Not since Jon Gruden’s first year has that happened. From his second year on, Jon started losing the players respect, starting with Keyshawn Johnson.

Raheem had buddies, but not respect.

Schiano was a drill sergeant, the coach players felt was too controlling.

Smith had legacy, but players saw through it right away.

Dirk Koetter is just over two years into his head coaching career. If you look at it from a development viewpoint, he had a learning experience. Just like players who have bad second years have to show how they respond, Dirk has to do the same.

He has the support of players.
    He has a great GM.
He ran soft OTAs last year and it hurt him. This year,he learned and is running things tougher.
He and Jason addressed the areas of need, and did it well.

No one can name a realistic head coach candidate who is not a bigger gamble.

  7. Not there yet Says:

9-7 doesn’t get you street cred in NFL circles especially with those who’ve some it over their career not just in one season. He’s had one really bad season and a good season so I’d say he’s kinda batting .500

He’s done nothing as a head coach until he reaches postseason

  8. Buccernutter Says:

Buddy you are just as dumb and annoying as reality.

You guys should totally join forces under the name buddy is a beotch and take turns keying letters as you sit on jbf all day trashing a team you love.

I bet you Tmax beotch bought a new computer for the IP address so he can trash McCoy all the time again. I’d hate to sit in your computer chair. Disgusting.

  9. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Bonzai, wow, you must be one of the 1-1, tie in a soccer game is fantastic ppl, gruden was best coach bucs ever had and your W/L chart proved it, Koetter HAS to win this year, when eagles, bills, rams, niners are all able to right the ship and yet here stands tampa repeating the same ol same ol, koetter & browns coach just may only be average OCs & horrible HCs

  10. 813bucboi Says:

uh-oh….there’s @rhealist going to bat for his booty partner…..lol….there he goes creating excuses as if no other team has to deal with injuries, talent deficiencies or adversity….lol…..

you are what your record says you are and dirk is a 5-11 coach that in entering 2018 on the hot seat!!!!!!……licht has added more talent and depth so the pressures on dirk…..and we all saw him welt under pressure last year….

  11. 813bucboi Says:

    bonzai

he ran a soft TC not OTA’s…..and it looks like we’re headed down that road again…..he mentioned a few weeks ago that he’s a big believer in his TC process…..

and if he has the locker room, why did Winston ignore him the last play vs the saints?…..why did baker run wild?…..those are 2 examples of a coach who doesn’t have full control of the locker room…..same thing happened with McAdoo in NYC….players started making their own calls and running wild in practice and while being undisciplined and losing control in games(Winston, evans, baker, ward)(DRC…ELI APPLE) …the difference was the owners were smart enough to can him……players see right thru dirk judging by how ward, baker, Winston all either ignored him, went to the media about what was going on or just didn’t give a damn…..

pressures on dirk and smitty to get us to the playoffs….fail and they go fishing….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

I pretty much agree with Bonzai about Koetter and Jason Licht.
If we can demonstrate a real running game this year, our offense is gonna be hard to stop.
On defense, it is gonna be great to finally see GMC not triple covered for a change.
I am looking for a great year for us this year, maybe even a playoff spot.

Here’s a win loss chart for you

    1996 6-10
    1997 10-6 playoff
    1998 8-8
    1999 11-5 playoff
    2000 10-6 playoff
    2001 9-7 playoff

    Career record 54-42

I see one losing season ( first year) and 4 playoff berth’s

    Gruden : 3 losing seasons, 3 playoff berth’s and 57-55 overall

And Tony started with a hell of a lot less…

So tired of “Jon Gruden is the greatest”.. Won a Sb..yes, thanks..Greatest Bucs coach ever? Nah.

Another moron trying to rewrite history and justify dungy the failed clown…. sam whych handed dungy the cliwn 2 hall of famers and 5 great players. Dungy built nothing but pretenders. 2 playoff wins in 6 years is complete faikure considering the playrrs that ignorant fool was gifted.

The legend of dungy far exceeds his actual accomplishments.

The one thing that cant be denied is the hall lost all credibility when that bum was enshrined ahead of more qualified / deserving men like tom flores.

  17. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

Losing in the first round of playoffs just means you did not belong there to begin with. One and done in playoffs is pretending not contending also known as the Dungy in loser circles

“if he has the locker room, why did Winston ignore him the last play vs the saints?”

You are kidding me, right? Selective hearing maybe?

How many times has Koetter stated that he wants Winston to step up and change plays during games because he see’s something Koetter does not????

Winston wasn’t ignoring Koetter, he was doing what Koetter has been teaching him to do. It was a step forward for Winston.

  21. Lord Cornelius Says:

Jon Gruden (7 seasons. 4 winning / 3 losing) 57-55 (51% wins). Average division during that time / SOS in general. (4 of those 7 seasons only 1 team in the division had a winning record with 3 losers).

Raheem Morris (3 seasons. 1 winning / 2 losing) 17-31 (35% wins). Stronger division during that time (2-3 teams with winning records each year).

Greg Schiano (2 seasons. 2 losing). 11-21 (34%). Division was decent (3 losing records his first season; and 2 winning records second season).

Lovie Smith (2 seasons. 2 losing). 8-24 (33%). Division was actually weak during this 2 years outside of Carolina in 2015. Carolina won it with 7 wins in 2014 – meaning no one was dominating that year. In 2015 only Carolina had a winning record (dominant but Saints/Falcons much worse than they’ve been the last year or 2). Bucs also faced historically weak SOS in terms of non-divisional teams they played in 2015.

Dirk Koetter (2 seasons. 1 winning. 1 losing). 14-18 (44%). Division /SOS probably as difficult as it’s been over this period. 3 winning records last year. 2 the prior year. Atlanta in the super bowl in 2016. The Saints one play from the NFC Championship in 2017.

So objectively Koetter has been better and it isn’t really close. It’s worse when you factor in SOS / the strength of the division during each coach’s tenure.

If he goes 10-6 then that’s 2 winning seasons in 3 years and a record that mirrors gruden’s overall win %.

IMO we still have the best staff by far since Gruden. The bar was set really low by a super incompetent GM and incompetent coaches; but to look over the years I don’t see how anyone could think Koetter isn’t the best of the bunch at this point in time.

Let’s get those 10+ wins and get some damn continuity of winning going on please clap clap.

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Duthsty Rhothdes, you may as well just ignore me, because I take nothing you say seriously. Your track record here has well established you as a twit.

And how can anyone say Jon Gruden was the best coach we’ve had? He BARELY had a winning record!!!!!

Tony Dungy had 1 losing season in 6 years. Gruden had 3 losing season in 7 years.

Simple math. Dungy was the best. The facts support that. And the only reason Gruden won that superbowl was because he put the finishing touches on the team that Dungy built, and after the first year, he proceeded to destroy the team.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Well said, Lord Cornelius.

The problem is you, like me, are using facts, whereas the emotional biased so-called fans use opinion to support their claims.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    buddy Says
“You never answered me from yesterday??? LOL Just skip over things you don’t like to deal with”

I haven’t a clue what you are talking about. If you link to it I might respond, but in my defense, since what you say is almost always wrong, I probably did you a favor.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Are you referring to this?

    buddy Says
@Buccaneer Bonzai- So let me get this straight you are happy with what Licht and #KluelessKoetter have done since being here??? What exactly is their record and how many playoff wins do they have???? I’m waiting…….

If so, I didn’t return to the thread until now…so there goes your theory.

So far as am I happy? How can we not be? Yes, more wins will be nice (notice I said ‘will’…because they will come), but you cannot deny that since the arrival of Dirk Koetter and Jason Licht, this team has improved in almost all areas (counting this off season). You cannot deny that this offense is better than anything Jon Gruden was able to assemble.

And the defense is on its way.

What we have is a team built to succeed over the long term future…not one of these teams that have a good season and disappear. The Bucs have a great offense and they have now built a great defense.

If you believe differently, then you prove how wrong you can be.

But in the end, proving me, LC and Reality are right is very simple…all we have to do is wait until this season is over. That is when you will be pretending you were supportive all along…and the team will have the wins.

    Lord Corn

Why did you leave Dungy off your list You included everybody else? Did I miss something?”

Because I was primarily trying to review all the coaches after Gruden relative to Gruden – since Gruden was the last successful coach we had. I’m not trying to contribute to a Dungy vs Gruden debate. Both coaches/era’s were a million times better than everything after so far.

  31. Buccano19 Says:

Bizarre that people can be so pessimistic/negative and frequent this site so much. It’s not like all this Dirk trolling helps their cause in June. And while people call for a coach’s firing after only one losing season, keep in mind that Ron Rivera had 2 losing seasons to start his NFL head coaching career before winning the division in his 3rd then eventually making a trip to the Superbowl. Sean Payton had 3 straight 7-9 seasons before being one play away from the NFC championship game just this year. Fans need to acquire some patience. Dirk may produce this year or may not, but you’d never know if the Glazers listened to the impatient trigger finger fans after just one bad year.

  32. Rod Munch Says:

Dirk is a bottom 5 head coach.
Dirk is a top 5 offensive coordinator.

Mike Smith is a top 12(ish) head coach.
Mike Smith is a bottom 1 defensive coordinator.

There’s a really obvious fix here that could be done without tearing the team down and improving the team dramatically.

  33. Buccano19 Says:

    @813bucboi

“Ignore”? What facts is that based on, your own bias? Usually all quarterbacks have the liberty or discretion to pass the ball where he sees fit. There’s only one primary receiver yet multiple receivers running routes. Why read too much into that?

  34. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Buccano19

813bucboi knows what progressions are in an offense!!!!! He is just still but-hurt over loser lovie getting canned for being incompetent!!!!!!!
