Bucs Should Be Fearless In Jameis Decision

June 29th, 2018

Bucs co-chairmen Bryan (left) and Ed Glazer.

Russell Wilson was a star in his rookie season and leader of a 13-3 team in his second.

Derek Carr was a 32-touchdown passer and Pro Bowler in his second year.

The list goes on.

Three-time Pro Bowler Andy Dalton was a stud rookie on a 9-7 team.

Dak Prescott shocked the world with a monster rookie season on a 13-3 club.

Jimmy Garoppolo’s undefeated record sure looks good. And Case Keenum was in the playoffs last year and has a winning record as an NFL starter. Tom Brady is still pretty good while Kirk Cousins is the second-highest paid gunslinger in the league.

None of those eight starting quarterbacks were first-round draft picks.

The point is the Buccaneers shouldn’t be concerned about moving on from America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, out of fear that they won’t find a quality replacement in a hurry. Keep Jameis because you think he can take you to a Super Bowl and is trustworthy, not because you doubt your scouting department can find a QB that can win relatively quickly. There’s a big difference there.

Plenty of first-round QBs win in a hurry, too. Matt Ryan was winning rookie with a franchise in turmoil. Ben Roethlisberger was historically good as a young quarterback. Jared Goff and Carson Wentz were absolute money in their second seasons, winners putting up big numbers. Joe Flacco was strong out of the gate.

One could make a case that half the teams in the league knew how to find a good QB outside the first round of the draft or developed a first-round quarterback quickly.

Joe just hopes Team Glazer, which ultimately will decide the fate of Jameis Winston’s Buccaneers future, makes the Jameis call using logic and football reality, not fear.

  1. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Again Joe, if your sister or wife was the uber driver would you still call him America’s Quarterback? Talk about tone deaf. Time to move on from that moniker.
Joe has no interest in being tone sensitive, especially considering that there is always someone calling Joe tone deaf no matter what Joe writes. Joe doesn’t sway with public opinion, especially for a benign nickname that was in place six months before Jameis was drafted. –Joe

We’ll be free of America’s Sex Offender after he turns the ball over 20 times and leads us to another mediocre season at the bottom of the NFC South. It’s just a waiting game at this point.

  6. BrianBucs Says:

If Malcomb Glazer was still running the team he would cut Winston in a heartbeat as he made fearless moves that were good for his franchise.
My goodness, get on the phone with the Eagles about Nick Foles

  7. Alanbucsfan Says:

If he wins and there are no more issues, Jameis is here in 2019
If he loses or there is another issue- Bucs will move on

  8. SB Says:

What is sad for us as fans is that I believe we have one of the best “teams” we have had in over a decade and this would have been the yr that JW lights it up. Unfortunately even if he does the rest of the world will only see the Uber incident.

  9. Bucsfanman Says:

Amen Joe! For some reason people think this guy is irreplaceable. I 100% disagree. While the team itself has not been very good (understatement of the century!) Jameis has yet to prove that he’s a franchise QB. (please don’t roll out worthless statistics. It’s W’s or L’s!)
He may have a good arm but that doesn’t mean squat if he can’t win games. We have won more games with lesser talent, even a S.B.!
    He CAN be replaced.

  10. JJV Says:

The Glazers will keep him you can count on it. Wonder how they would feel if protest groups become common outside One Buc Place and the stadium before games with national media attention. The only thing that may make them do anything if season ticket holders and team sponsors decide to boycott. Even then I am not sure.

We elected a self-admitted kitty-grabber the President of the United States for crying out loud. Why are folks so all bent up with Jameis Winston? He is presidential material to be honest.

  12. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Joe, my retort – you say you are responsible for every word on this blog but have no interest in being tone sensitive. You say not this time because someone is always calling you out and won’t bend to pressure? How about you make an exception for sexual predators.

It’s your blog – obviously – but it make it look horrible, and from the comments I’m not the only one. Use common sense here, not testosterone.

  13. AlteredEgo Says:

Jameis and the Bucs need a clean break….I wish it was not so and Jameis was the QB everyone hoped he would become….that is not the reality ….the reality is that it is a PR train wreck and will be relived and magnified every bonehead play….immature impulse ….it is simply too much drama and anxiety for a sport that is supposed to be fun for the fan base and an escape from the 9-5 working world reality

  14. ShutTheBucUp Says:

    America’s Sex Offender?
Lol this situation is so messy and it’s only going to get worse. I can’t believe he lied about this and tried to sweep it under the rug. You can’t trust nor respect a man like that

  15. Steven007 Says:

SC, it’s testosterone and simple stubbornness. They made up the stupid moniker, which was stupid when they made it up by the way, and now they’re sticking by it because, because, because…

  16. SB Says:

Maybe at 24 Jamies will finally learn what I am teaching my 11 yr old.

“It is better to ask for permission than forgiveness”

  17. JJV Says:

Also, they have a history of being very tolerant and forgiving in the past with troubled players. They may have eventually got rid of them but in many cases it was not immediate with another chance.

  18. TonyC Says:

Here’s the problem. Is this team including coachingstaff and management willing to risk the distractions that will come with JW’s return in game 4? What if Fitz is winning or over 500 then what? This team doesn’t do well with distractions and another losing season will get everyone fired. I do think that the current staff may get a pass if Winston is benched or released. The other question I ask is JW strong enough mentally to return given fan’s/media’s response?

  19. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

@Joe. Please keep using the “Americas QB” moniker.

Its fun to laugh at all these idiots pissing themselves over it

  20. Pete I Says:

The President of the United States is irrelevant to the future of the Buccaneers as is Big Ben. The glazers can only decide who they want to represent Tampa Bay. America’s QB who touches women inappropriately (more than once apparently), drinks to much (oh so now we are to believe he is sober?) and lies about it. Or someone else who doesn’t do those things, you know about 99% of other players.

  21. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Tony, he returned after his rape allegations at school and won games so I think he’ll be fine

  22. dbagsy Says:

Lose the offensive nickname. You’re trolling your own readers. You’re condoning JW’s actions. Don’t go down with that sinking ship. He’ll take you with him. Don’t be a stubborn investor holding onto a bad stock that you fell in love with. Let it go and stop condoning an obvious sexual offender.

  23. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

If America’s President can grab women by the P&ssy and be accused by COUNTLESS women of sexual assault, and still remain America’s President, than America’s QB can still remain America’s QB.

  24. Robert Says:

some of us….very few, have been screaming he is a POS since before we drafted him. suck it……all yall moral deviants and those seeing through bucs glasses rather than a moral compass. he is a POS. and an IDIOT!

  25. D-Rome Says:

I agree with this. I hear you guys often say that Jameis is the best QB in franchise history. While that is true that’s not saying much given this franchise’s history. The fact remains is that in terms of development he is still behind the aforementioned QB’s in this article, and other QB’s not mentioned in this article.

In other words, the Bucs can do better.

  26. Buucccnasty Says:

I can’t read this crap anymore joe, I’m sorry but I used to enjoy reading every word but his nonsense… if i has the time to pull up every link go every article you have written about the Bucs NOT having a QB I would, keep your mind made and you’re story straight.

  27. Posey99 Says:

Keep pounding the drums. Get this guy out of town. He was a joke in college , a joke on the sidelines eating W’s and a joke off the field.

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We have spent 3 years using a roster spot for Ryan Griffin, yet he still isn’t the first backup for Jameis……why?

If Griffin can’t be the primary backup after all the time we need to move on. I would be fine drafting a backup for Jameis in rounds 4-7….

Next years draft we need to focus on Oline with 2 of our 1st 3 picks.

  29. AlabamaBucFan Says:

@ Joe quoting from SC Bucs fan- Again Joe, if your sister or wife was the uber driver would you still call him America’s Quarterback? Talk about tone deaf. Time to move on from that moniker.

Joe likes the nickname, obviously, that’s the only reason it’s here. Simple as that.–Joe

    Doug Williams > Jameis Winston…

  32. JJV Says:

According to Licht, they did many hours of exhaustive research and investigating on Jameis. They were very confident and sure that it was the correct decision to craft him #1 to represent this team and community as the franchise QB. By their current actions it seems they still feel that way. Let’s hope they are correct a second time now.

  33. AlabamaBucFan Says:

@ TampaBayBucFan We have spent 3 years using a roster spot for Ryan Griffin, yet he still isn’t the first backup for Jameis……why?

Ryan Griffin would have been #2 last year if he did not get injured in preseason.

  34. donuts Says:

ASO is his new moniker. America’s Sex Offender. NO more Jaboo/ Amerika QB or any of that other nonsense. Monikers are EARNED and he earned ASO.

If Fitz goes 3-0, do you still play Winston? I am no longer sure and if I were Koetter I would stick with the hot hand and not trust someone who lied to me and Licht.

  35. tval Says:

EXACTLY, Robert!! You are biased and senseless when speaking jameis..THANKS FOR PROVING OUR POINT!!!! Move on..its America’s Qb, to YOU!!

  36. TonyC Says:

I’m also wondering if JW was struggling with guilt of his actions (withholding the truth for 2 years) or if he’a even capable of guilt or self reflection. Makes me wonder if the “good citizen” persona is a facade.

  37. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Joe could find a more appropriate word to describe the “America’s QB” nickname than benign…..don’t think the meaning matches the situation.
Here’s your definition. Please stop misrepresenting Joe. You are back in the cooler for the day. Joe has no time to babysit comments today with the usual vigor. –Joe

  40. SailorJerry Says:

Is the Jameis today the same person that he was two years ago or in college?

Is Ben Rothlesberger the same person today that he was in 2010?

Glazers will likely make their decision based on who Jameis is today and who they believe he can be in the future. Most of us are not close enough to that understanding of the man to judge him.

If they believe that this behavior and negative impact to the Team will continue then they will move on.

  41. Wausa Says:

  48. Bucsfanman Says:

If the suspension agreement between the NFL and the “Winston Camp” was negotiated down to three games, what number did they start from?

  50. SC Bucs Fan Says:

AE, he might have come clean with the locker room a long time ago; told the story and all the guys laughed and made jokes. I don’t know that’s true but you can see where that could have happened. In the locker room boys will be boys plays better then in the real world.

  65. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“The point is the Buccaneers shouldn’t be concerned about moving on from America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, out of fear that they won’t find a quality replacement in a hurry.”

    How quickly people forget.

Say…anyone remember the quarterback curse? You know, the one in place until we drafted Winston?

If anyone claims he can easily be replaced or if anyone suggests we can ‘ find a quality replacement in a hurry’, then that person clearly is not in touch with history. The Bucs took decades to find the best QB to ever be on this team. That’s Winston.

This incident is not only a minor one, but it took place over 2 years ago and since then he has dramatically improved his behavior and standing in the community.

It is not like he held the girl down and raped her (and those rape accusations in college were unproven and thrown out of court 4 times). If true, he touched the girl inappropriately. If untrue, all of you are judging the kid unfairly.

His statement was prepared ahead of time, and likely said exactly what he agreed to say. But that doesn’t make his statement a confession.

Yes, he had far too much to drink. Since then, he has stopped drinking. How do we know this? Because the stories of him quitting came out long before these accusations came to light.

In fact, later in the same off season as this incident, he started reaching out to the community and making changes to his lifestyle. He started visiting middle schools too.

So Tom Jones and all of these media guys jumping all over this need to be ignored. The Jameis back then is NOT the same Jameis as now.

And if the Glazers get rid of him over this they are as dumb as the trolls that popped up here in the past few weeks.

I think you bring up an interesting point. Many people are pointing to Big Ben and Ray Lewis and how the organizations supported them. There are probably people who still think the Steelers should have cut Big Ben and that they can do better today but we never hear them because….well….the hive mind took over.

  68. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Tampabaybucfan Says
“Joe could find a more appropriate word to describe the “America’s QB”

This is not a personal attack, so please don’t take it that way, but I have seen numerous people complaining about the moniker the last week or so.

You are all wasting your time. Joe gives nicknames to players, coaches and personalities. It’s one of the things that makes this website unique.

Personally, I never cared for the America’s QB nickname, but I have never told Joe he should change it. Why? It is not my place to do so, just as it is no one else’s place to do so. This is Joe’s website. He can do with it as he pleases.

Now, maybe he’s too nice to tell you all to worry about your own business, but I’m not. With all that is happening, a nickname is the last thing anyone should be concerned with.

However, I would like to see a poll on which moniker we like less:

    America’s QB
    Den of Depression
    Father Dungy
and all those 20 word nicknames he comes upward

  69. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Pete I, not some QB in Pittsburgh? That’s my point. What Ben did was way worse and he’s still there. I live in PA and I see Roethlisberger jerseys everywhere, even on women. All Winston has to do is win and you’ll see women around Florida with Winston jerseys on and won’t care what he did off the field.

  70. D-Rome Says:

Say…anyone remember the quarterback curse? You know, the one in place until we drafted Winston?

There’s no such thing as curses. Do you still believe in the tooth fairy?

Even if you want to believe in curses, shamans, witch doctor’s, ect… what has Jameis done over the past three seasons that has made you believe the curse has been lifted?

In all situations, the people who believe they are cursed are really too ignorant to see and/or admit they made a bad decision. This may shock you but there really wasn’t a Curse of the Bambino. Simply put the Red Sox were incapable of fielding a winner for 86 years and that was due to bad general management, bad on-field management, bad decision making on the field, bad play execution. No curses there. It’s not any different for the Bucs.

Were the Buccaneers cursed when they traded away Steve Young? No, it was an inept decision by an inept organization. It’s been series of inept decisions post-Super Bowl. No curses or boogeymen necessary.

Bonzai- While it may set the franchise back a bit, I do not agree that there is some kind of “curse” in replacing what is merely an above average QB at this time.
We’ll have to see what JW is really made of THIS season. In his 4th year with the weapons he has, he should be able to elevate his game. If he can’t, suspension aside, he’s toast. Why would we keep him? We act like he’s taken us to the promised land already. For him, starting week 4, put up or shut up!

JJ like many before him pointed out that Roethlsberger did far worse 7 years ago.

I do not disagree but the operative words there are not “far worse” but “seven years ago”. And we shouldn’t exclude the fact that BR won an SB before going “prima donna”. A lot…no I mean a LOT has changed in the past seven years.
BR would be toast if his “indiscretions” had occurred in 2018.

And again…it’s not even the Pgroping that sealed the deal for me…just as all those charges at FSU didn’t prevent me from cheering when he was drafted.

But he totally BETRAYED his teammates..Buc fans..that’s us guys! Not to mention literally jeopardizing the career of Licht and Koetter and hosing the Glazers out of their investment. If you do not have enough brains to realize after acquiring a record at FSU that came close to costing the top draft pick to realize you don’t get to hang with a convicted rapist and Darby drunk on your butt at 3AM?

I never got to the “alleged” crotch grabbing. If JW had never met Kate but news came out that he was drunk out of his gourd with two guys with horrid reps…he’s still have earned a pass out of town. If he’s not smart enough to figure out the OBVIOUS….he’s not smart or classy or yes I’ll say it…caring enough to be the Buc’s QB. Simple as that.
