Scouting Godfather Predicts Pro Bowl For Ronald Jones

Now this almost is almost more comforting than a Duke’s Cold Nose Brown Ale on a steaming hot Florida beach.

What a feel-good morning nugget.

Yesterday, legendary scouting guru Gil Brandt, the architect of the pre-Jimmy Johnson Cowboys dynasty, assessed the drafted running backs last month, ranked them and predicted their futures on NFL.com.
Ronald Jones was No. 3 on his list behind Saquon Barkley (Giants, No. 2 overall pick) and Derrius Guice (Redskins, No. 59 pick.
Here’s the take from Brandt:
Measurements: 5-11, 205 pounds, 8 3/4-inch hands, 36.5-inch vertical, 4.56 40.
Drafted: Round 2, No. 38 overall.

Don’t be swayed too much by that 40 time from USC’s pro day, where he generally didn’t work out that well — that was likely influenced by a hamstring issue that also caused trouble for Jones at the NFL Scouting Combine. The way he ran away from Texas’ fast corners in an open-field catch-and-run last season shows that he’s much faster than that mark would indicate. He started 19 games over the past two seasons and cleared 100 yards in 13 of them, and his career total of 3,619 yards ranks fifth all-time at USC. He also broke Charles White’s freshman rushing record with 987 yards (6.5 average) in 2015 despite not starting. He has a history of productivity and is going to a team that needs a running back. I’m a bit worried about his hand size — at 8 3/4 inches, he’s below the 9-inch threshold, which indicates potential fumbling issues. But ultimately, I think Jones will start as a rookie and become a Pro Bowler in the future.

How bout that! Pro Bowl!

Man, if Brandt is correct, Jones will preserve a lot of jobs in Tampa and sell an awful lot of jerseys.

Brandt called four eventual Pro Bowl running backs from this draft, the three names above and Kerryon Johnson of the Lions.

Have you seen this guy’s highlight reel? Unlike the other RBs in the draft and our past RBs, Jones rarely if ever gets caught from behind. If he gets in the open, he is GONE!!!

  3. BringBucsBack Says:

Our numbskull head coach won’t realize his potential because he doesn’t block like Anthony Munoz.

  4. Kobe Faker Says:

Kobe doesnt see the physicality in Jones

I dont see a stiff arm nor the power to break the initial contact

He might have some success swinging him outside but he will be pitiful inside the tackles which Klueless loves to call

Jones need alot of teaching. He holds the ball away from his body and catches with his belly than his hands. This kid will be sitting after numerous fumbles/misassignments/drops

Kobe doesnt see the fight/ eye of the tiger in Jones

To be Rb1 you need to be over confident/boastful/angry/never die bad man

  5. John5 Says:

I kind of read that as, maybe we shouldn’t have passed on Guice? I researched his alleged offfield issues, and all I could see was that the concerns were he plays video games. Fumbling is a big time issue. So I hope it doesn’t become one with Rojo. When the word got out that Alstott had small hands, everyone was forcing fumbles on him.

  6. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

Pro bowls mean less than nothing if your yeam is permanently in the nfc south basement.

  7. Wausa Says:

Uninjured he is a sub 4.4 guy.
Running a 10.3 in high school is incredibly fast.

  8. JabooBuc Says:

John5- lot of big time issues about Guice. Much was kept under wraps while at LSU and still hasn’t been made public. Suffice it to say there were very good reasons why teams stayed away.

  9. Wausa Says:

He ran a 10.3 100 meters in high school.
This guy is one of the fastest players in the NFL.
Luckily for the Bucs he was injured when he ran his 40 otherwise I am not sure he would’ve made it out of the 1st round.

I’m not sure what Kobe Faker is seeing Jones was a workhorse for USC and if you watched any of their games the majority of his carries were off tackle and/or up the middle.

Here is what PFF said about Jones after the season:

Ronald Jones II has consistently been the Trojans’ best offensive player this season and has forced 48 missed tackles on 212 carries.

  10. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

I was 100% all in on guice and still do not know why they didnt grab him but it is in the past, hope this guy is better because he was picked ahead of guice but the bucs OL specifically the right side is garbage and has not been attempted to be addressed

  11. Robert Says:

doug martin will get more yards than him this year. u heard it here 1st

  12. Steven007 Says:

Reality (Trollmax), “basement” – another favorite! You just can’t resist can you?

  13. SCBucsFan Says:

I’m amazed some of you clowns are down on this guy. And yes, you are clowns. Except the troll who changed his name, he’s a loser.

  14. Destinjohnny Says:

Am I crazy to think he is basically a part time semi 3rd down back?
It’s physics man, when a smaller angular guy is getting blasted by grown ass big men that out weigh him by a lot
After 4 games, caddy who was built similar was basically toast.
I would have drafted Guice instead of M.J.
We would have been soooo set at RB with both of these guys

  15. SCBucsFan Says:

I can’t believe some of you clowns see something negative in this guy. And yes, you are clowns. Except one poster who changed his name, he’s a loser.

  16. LJ'sDaddy Says:

I am done reading comments…Really? the trolls here are out of hand. I do not even know why they read the stuff on this here corner of the interwebs. There seems to be so much hate and vitriol for the Bucs. Geesh people, why bother?

    GO BUCS!

  17. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    Steve

You have it bad sir. Seek help. Tmax is not the only real fan who has noticed the bucs under the captaincy of gmc have turned the nfc south basement into a soft comfortable home for the better part of the last decade. Are you selling your tin hats on ebay by any chance.

  18. Reality_43 Says:

Good God at the negativity of some people.
No Way can you say just because he has small hands he will fumble a lot.

Emmit Smith had small hands and ran a 4.7 at 5’9″.

Selected 17th overall because of it. I bet 16 teams were disgusted 5 years later.

Ronald Jones could end up being the best RB to ever play the game.

    NO ONE KNOWS $hit yet.

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We are now at the point where I want to believe the best, but am hesitant to give props for players who have everything to prove.

  20. Chris sell Says:

Robert wins the day with the dumbest comment I’ll read anywhere. Doug Martin will have a better year than rojo? Lol your mom called young buc, it’s time for dinner. Let the big boys talk about football

  21. 813bucboi Says:

r.jones will be good as long as dirk feeds him!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  22. DanBucsFan Says:

Im just happy that KobeFaker is no longer working for the Bucs , so his opinion is nothing more than a opinion.

  23. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

OBJECTIOn your Honor!!! Pro Bowl talk is merely speculation, let’s just reassess after the performance of the said running back and revamped o-line, the Defense rests. Well hopefully not that defense but the defense of…well you know what i mean. =)

  24. DanBucsFan Says:

Thankfully KobeFaker is not employed to evaluate nfl talent.

  25. SCBucsFan Says:

I can’t believe some of you clowns are down on Jones already – and you are clowns. Except for the troll that changed his name, he’s a loser.

  26. oxycondoms Says:

guice isn’t a 3 down guy which is the same issue with barber, jones seems more versatile hence less predictable play calls

  27. Alpha Buc fan Says:

Self-accolades are nice for players an going to the pro bowl is cool but winning the super bowl is better. If our players are playing in the pro bowl it means we arnt playing for the trophy an that’s not nice or cool. I wanna see our team playing nasty mean football an playing together as a team an players holding each other accountable

  28. AlteredEgo Says:

    please…cart..horse….

  29. Steven007 Says:

Reality (Trollmax) the mere fact that you turned a post about Ronald Jones into a platform for your hatred of GMC is PROOF that you’re a fraud. Really, as Lovie would say it’s as simple as that. Tin hats? What, are you 80?

  30. Lord Corn Says:

Ronald Jones broke a sh1t load of tackles and was primarily an inside runner… vision/patience/cutting/explosion/balance is all there

Now he probably isn’t as good at taking on 2 hits and pushing the pile another 2 yard like Barber can.. but he can most definitely break arm tackles / bad angle tackles with ease and can make guys miss with ease

  31. Bucsfanman Says:

Jones has good tape at USC. If I have ANY concern, it is his size and how he will be utilized.
I think if they employ a 2-back system, it will benefit BOTH backs Jones/Barber/?

  32. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

    @Kobe

Did you turn on Barkely’s highlights by mistake. Barkely is terrible at running up the middle and does not run through contact at all.

On the other hand, Rojo is def a great between the tackles runner, he hits the hole with speed and power, and despite being smaller, is a much better contact runner than Barkley.

  33. unbelievable Says:

I was really high on Juice, but I like RoJo’s tape. Excited to see his speed unleashed if our oline can actually open up some holes. Interested to see how well he can break through tackles in NFL…

  34. unbelievable Says:

    *Guice- damn autocorrect.

  35. Guzzie Says:

Rojo had 1 fumble last year, you can’t measure this guys heart, he seems ready to work hard, and he’s explosive, he’ll get plenty of touches, and break many runs, USC didn’t even use him properly, they treat him like a between the tackles runner, a majority of his carries we up the gut, he broke numerous tackles and displayed jump cut abilities, and great vision, his best comparison is Jamaal Charles, it’s Chris Johnson, a 10.3 100 is comparable to a 4.3s 40, thank God he hurt his hamstring, he runs in 4.3s at the combine, he doesn’t make it out the 1st round

  36. Guzzie Says:

    Isn’t Jamaal Charles I meant

  37. John5 Says:

I just said I hope fumbling isn’t an issue for Rojo. Never said it was because it hasn’t been. I think he’s a great pick and all reports on him thus far have been positive. I’m hoping he blocks and catches well too, and can be an all around running back playing most of the downs.

  38. uckinator Says:

Rojo reminds me of Walter (Sweetness) Payton. Was small, but he didn’t do too bad. It’s what’s in your heart !

  39. 99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7 Says:

    Buckle Up!
    GO BUCS!!!

  40. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @Guzzie

I think he’s a mix of Charles/Johnson. Charles ran with similar balance / upright style but similar to CJ2k in terms of how he will be patient in the hole; then plant and burst; or cut and burst seamlessly. Charles was more of a glider and had great hands.

Both CJ2k / Charles broke tackles well despite their size.

Also if anything he’s going to see more work on downs 1 & 2 vs being a 3rd down back. He’s got to be better in pass pro and get more work on his route running/hands. Barber & Sims & Rogers all have an advantage on him there

  41. SOEbuc Says:

I’m not buying some ugly ass Bucs jersey. Still a fan, but bring on the XFL.

    #SAVE THE GAME VINCE MACMAHON!

  42. Kobe Faker Says:

    @LC

Dont see the internal fire/passion in jones

Something just doesnt smell right with this kid. I see alittle of this aloof, millennial introvert ala milli vanilli VH3

    “I see things”

    Kobe Faker

  43. SOEbuc Says:

Taking back my statement “SAVE THE GAME VINCE MACMAHON.”

-He said the game is going to be faster (2 hours). No

-Said no player with the smallest of criminal background can’t play. That’s like 90% of NFL players, right?

-Says the game is going to be safer. Opposite of what I want when these multi millionaires can be signing safety clauses if they wanna get paid.

That league sounds like another one year deal Vince. Someone just come in and make football a hard core game again. No one has a problem with hockey and those guys get hit harder with less padding.

Best way to fight trolls is to completely ignore them as if they don’t exist. Most are just dying for attention and an opportunity to keep speaking nonsense.

  47. Jeffbuc Says:

Man that’s 4 runningback drafted this year in the nfc that are going to be pro bowlers. Don’t think that is possible. You all knocking Jones cause of his size. I don’t think he was drafted to be a banger three down back. I think he will split carries with Peyton Barber. Kind of the the Alvin Kamara role for the saints. Never have more than 12 carries but get 4-6 screens a game. And be around 90 all purpose yards a game. I would say 900 rushing 500 reviving 9 touchdowns would be a reachable goal.
