McShay: Bucs Fans Better Prepare

May 6th, 2018

Grim forecast.

There is only one thing more worthless than a mock draft a year ahead of a football season that has yet to kickoff.

And that would be a warm bottle of beer. At least one can turn the warm bottle into something useful in two hours just by putting it in the fridge. No such luck with a future mock draft.

How does the mocker know who will be available for the draft, much less who the best players will be or for that matter, what team will be picking where? Talk about a waste of time!

The only thing one can glean from a future mock draft is how the mocker thinks an NFL team will play in the upcoming season.

And this is where Bucs fans better be bracing themselves and may want to take a seat.

Todd McShay, famous mocker for BSPN, believes the Bucs are doomed for a terrible season as he has the Bucs picking fifth overall next season.

That’s worse than this past season!

If the Bucs are really picking fifth overall in the spring of 2019, Joe suspects there will be a major housecleaning come January at One Buc Palace.

I don’t even know what to say? …McShay needs to lay off the booze.

  2. Howard Cosell Says:

A winning culture starts with the owners leading by example.
Similarly years of losing culture also starts with the owners not really
giving two spits about anything but their bottom line….or in some cases
    also being completely inept

  3. Howard Cosell Says:

    Nothing has changed this year.
We got our one requisite splash FA signing (to sell tickets).

    This season could be anywhere from 4 – 12 to 8 – 8 depending
    on injuries.

    Playoffs?
    No.

  4. Buchead407 Says:

Yea I’m a believe it when I see type of guy. I like the additions but I still feel like it’s a 6-10 to 9-7 season at best I hope I’m wrong!

  5. Blue-footed booby Says:

If the Bucs do end up with a top 5 pick in the 2019 draft, I think, deep down, we all know what position the new front office would be targeting with such a high draft pick …

  6. Nate Says:

Not QB in the draft their are no prospects ……if that did happen you have better talent on the team in Riley Ferguson of Memphis than any of the 2019 QB draft class

    Nate Dub

  7. Ray Rice Says:

    Starting with Aunt Geraldine

  8. Trench War Says:

For us to pick @5 we would have to have at most 5 wins or less. I think he’s underestimating what’s at stake.

  9. NFLNut Says:

    ****************

No one knows what the record will be … the Raiders and Cowboys were sexy SB picks last year and both missed the playoffs, while the Rams and Jaguars drastically exceeded everyone’s expectations.

We could go 3-13 or 13-3 … no one knows; however I do think if we win anything less than 9 games, coaches heads will roll!

As for next year’s draft … it’s deep with 1st round talent at the Offensive Tackle position which is great for Tampa as they may want to grab one in the 1st round to replace Demar Dotson!

    ****************

  10. AtlBucs Says:

If you want to feel better about McShays 2019 mock draft, just take a look at his 2018 mock draft. Mock drafting has to be the only job where a person can be consistently wrong and still be considered an expert!

  11. SOEbuc Says:

Joe you really need to get off this guys deeock all the time. It’s BSPN bulls#it. Great draft. Fixing both sides of the trenches. Barber and RoJo. Not one bad receiver. I think we will make it above the fifth spot. Prior to rookie mini camp and spring practice makes me laugh. But I do think Dirk will have to get a minimum 9-7 and a wild card to keep his job next year.

  12. unbelievable Says:

… so if a warm beer can be made cold, how is that the one thing worse than a mock draft a year in advance?

    Your analogy is… strange.

  13. richbucsfan Says:

Hurricane Irma saved jobs last season. I don’t think that will happen this year. It is put up or shut up time. The hype will be as intense as ever leading up to the season. I do hope the Bucs will figure it out this time.

  14. Kyle Says:

If we pick 5 and the qb was healthy all year, the new coach better find a new qb….. just sayin

  15. 1sparkybuc Says:

Great balance of talent and experience on both sides of the ball. Being able to run and also stop the run should add at least 3 more Ws. Not predicting playoffs with so many rookies being key, but 8-8 is the least I would expect just on the D-line alone. This team should be interesting and fun to watch if they can stay healthy. Go Bucs.

  16. FortMyersDave Says:

McShay is Canadian. He only has a job to be a foil of helmet head Kiper. I think of him as a Pierre Gammons, that former ESPN artifact that hated the fact that the Rays could school his BoSox with 30% of the salary and make him foolish every time he picked Boston over the good guys….,.

  17. Joeypoppems Says:

McShay didnt make up the pick order. He used football outsiders projections for the 2018 season.

It clearly says that in the article lol

  18. Bird Says:

Yah. Not buying that. However look at schedule – 4th toughest

And they start saints , eagles and Pittsburg And we play our division x 2

I hope we kick the crap out of Big Ben What a piece of dog crap . The dude wants fans to think he is gonna retire and wants ownership, players and fans to beg for him to stay …and then they draft a qb … his eventual replacement and he changes tune, says he is playing another 3-5 years at least …says the pick was wasted and that he will not help new qb. What a turd.

  19. Bird Says:

Vegas has over / under at 7.5

  20. Roy T. Buford Says:

Enthusiastic pessimism describes my mood, and I never listen to any media guy’s prediction with any more gusto than I put into my own. Get rid of all the hype from Hard Knocks, and all the expectations of JW#3 that are dashed in the broader public compared to last year, and I think this team is actually better on paper. We still have DJax, Evans, and Brate, but now know who OJ Howard is. WE picked up a superb C and are moving Marpet back to a G position. Got some competition for Hump, and a 2nd round RB over Martin. On D there is still GMC, David, Kwon, and Grimes. But we completely re-tooled the D line with some heavy hitters that run themselves, and not just their swagy mouths. And we drafted well for DT and CB, and maybe even LB. I think moving forward the biggest factor is what happens with Winston’s investigation, how many games he could get, and how big a drag it is on team morale. Hopefully it’s goose eggs in all three, but I doubt it. But I see better than 5-11 for sure, and would not rule out a playoff run at all.

  21. Roy T. Buford Says:

    ^^^picked UP a superb C^^^

  22. OneBuc55 Says:

From a talent stand point this my be the best team we’ve ever had…Winston, Evans, Jackson, Brate, Howard, Godwin, Rojo, McCoy, JPP, Vea, Alexander, David, etc etc etc…Imo, we have more talent on our team now than any other team in our division…

Regardless of the schedule if we win less than 8 games, shame on the coaching staff because the cubbart is as full as its ever been…

  23. teacherman777 Says:

    @kyle

are u serious? Another rookie QB?

jameis is the best QB in Bucs History. He has 3 years of the playbook and NFL speed under his belt.

    He will be great!

We will probably draft more pass rushers next year. Hopefully!

  24. mark2001 Says:

Nut…hate to tell you…. but Howard Cosell is pretty much on the money. 13-3? This team? Nutty….This division and schedule? Please. It will be a minor miracle to make the playoffs.

  25. AlteredEgo Says:

    Walters
Football has the Buc’s picking 32 in 2019….

  26. lambchop Says:

I would like a rating on these draft pundits’ mocks the minute the draft finishes. Whether or not the Bucs have a horrible season, who is McShay to predict NEXT years draft order when he can’t even piss straight into a bowl?

These guys are making themselves irrelevant.

  27. Bucsfanman Says:

Where’s Realist?! I’m sure he’s posted this somewhere! I’m positive he’s also given Koetter another 3 year pass!
    Baaaa-aaaaa-aaaaa (SHEEP noise!)
    Wait, is McShay Realist?!

  28. JJBucfan Says:

BTW- he has us going with OT, guess he is predicting D Smith will get Jameis killed again this year. However, I think we are really gonna surprise a lot of people this year.

  29. Architek Says:

This is literally all on Winston and his development. Will he still make the bonehead plays and fumbles? Or will he know when to check and take what the defense gives him?

I will say his peers are starting to pull away from him in the playoffs and wins and losses column…

  30. Destinjohnny Says:

    Id say top 10
    We don’t have a secondary
    Our oline is average.
    6-10

  31. passthebuc Says:

I would be willing to be McShay 100k he is wrong.

  32. Bucnut2 Says:

It all comes down Winston. If he continues to be a TO machine, it does not matter how good the rest of the roster is. As koetter says, he’s the only one how can lose games and he did that in spades last year. 3-11 in games he started. Doesn’t sound like much of a winner to me.

  33. Drew aka q Says:

NOPE…. bucs should have fired the 2 this offseason… now that the draft is over…. makes no sense to fire em after another crap season… ownership is in too deep now to make any changes … got to ride the horse they rode on to gwt to this point… glazers would be idiots to make changes now … give em two more years

  34. Not there yet Says:

Famous for mocking but never being right. They always do stupid things like this to prove how worthless their opinion is but making all kinds of money because despite this stupidity they’ll have people paying to find out their predictions every year

  35. NFLNut Says:

    **************

    MARK2001,

I stand by my statement, but you’re reading something into it that is not there as I never PREDICTED we’d go 13-3.

If a gun was to my head and I had to predict the schedule results, I’d say:

    3-3 in division
    2-2 against the AFC North
    2-2 against the NFC East
    2-0 against the Bears & 49ers

    Record: 9-7

However, I do believe if everything breaks right, this team has the talent to go 13-3 … and if things break wrong and Jameis gets suspended for 6 games, this team could also go 3-13 … we’ll see what happens.

    **************

  36. BucTrooper Says:

How can you really disagree? 5 wins last year, a rookie to fix the running game, a 30 year old to fix the pass rush.

  37. chipbuc Says:

Bucnut2 crawls out of his hole and gives us his first Winston is a TO machine crap of the new season. The first of many to follow. By the way your Mariota turned the ball over quite a bit last year. What was it 13 TDs 15 INTs 2 fumbles and that was on a playoff team. Maybe the Defense and running game had more to do with Tennessee making the playoffs than Mariota. So give Winston the same thing, a Defense and a running game and watch the turn overs go drastically down. Just saying.

  38. SOEbuc Says:

    BucTrooper

A very good 30 year old with the second most snaps last year to fix the pass rush.

  39. DalvinCookRules Says:

I grade this year’s draft as a C-, the only thing saving it from an F was the Bucs demonstrated ability to trade down & get good value (which they promptly wasted on bad picks). Just as I grade my undergrads, they may not have gotten the correct final answer, but the thought process should count for something.

The poor draft and, much more importantly, the inability to correct their terrible coaching staff means this season will be 7-9 in the best case scenario. Yes, a new coaching staff is badly needed.

  40. MadMax Says:

Its funny….other mocks before this last draft had us picking 31st and 32nd next year…meh, think what you want mcshay

  41. mark2001 Says:

Madmax…was that the “Eight Mile High Gazette” mock that had us drafting 31 or 32?

  42. Mike Johnson Says:

IF we are picking in the top 6 next year, Koetter and Smitty will be on Clearwater beach..Fishing..for good!!

  43. Dapostman Says:

I may be mistaken but I believe Vegas has the Bucs at 6.5 over/under win total for 2018. I believe that’s the 5th lowest total hence the 5th pick in 2019. The money though tells a different story like -160 on the over which means the total is closer to 7.5 wins. I see 10-6 max but anywhere from 7-10 wins seems reasonable.

  44. J Says:

    Tua for QB 2020 !

  45. J Says:

    Hey Joe,

McShay clearly says he didn’t decide on the draft order just used the outsiders/Vegas projections

  46. donuts Says:

This is off season noise. Don’t listen to it.

  47. Dan McLaughlin Says:

The only way we pick 5 is if we trade up. We are Super Bowl Bound this season!

  48. Dwight Says:

13-3 this year. You heard it here first. Screenshot it and save for later.

  49. Joel Says:

Sounds about right. Once again, injuries and horrible coaching will doom this team.

  50. denjoe Says:

    I’d say anywhere between 6-10 and 10-6. Probably 7-9 or 8-8.
Once again Jason Licht is going into a season with major question
marks at different positions. I’m still not sold on Smitty and some
of these position coaches. The scariest thing is, We only had 1
divisional win last year, thats pathetic for a team without a first
year coach. Let’s cross our fingers!

  51. feelthepewterpower Says:

Joe, Vegas has us currently at 6.5 wins…down from 8 wins at this time last season. While the Buccs play in arguably the hardest division in football, and the conference is stacked with at least four solid contenders (Saints, Packers, Vikings, Eagles), the Buccs could easily be the third or fourth see in a down AFC…I’d still hammer the over on the win total. Never know how injuries, weather, the timing of when you play your opponents, etc. will shake out. I actually feel it is an advantage to play the perceived harder teams (based on 2017, which again has nothing to do with how those teams will play in 2018) will help the Buccs….and place a high amount of imperative to get off to a good start.

  52. M0J0 Says:

Bucs have a brutal schedule and play in one of the toughest divisions in all of the NFL, so it’s possible that they are drafting in the top 10 again next year. However, I think the Bucs are going to be a vastly improved team next season and will win way more than most expect them to.

  53. LongSeason Says:

I’d say us picking 5th is about right until the team can prove us wrong. The get respect you have to earn respect. A few individuals have earned great respect. The team? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have not earned one shred of respect so why should anyone give them respect. I am hoping that this is the year they turn it around. After this year, I hope they have earned respect for the team.
