Talks Bucs red zone offense film

Last week the well-trained orangutans of the PFF tribe claimed the Bucs were one of the best teams in the NFL for not dropping passes.

Louis Riddick didn’t see it the same way.

The former NFL defensive back and player personnel director of the Eagles, Riddick, working for BSPN, claimed he watched a cut-up recently of every red zone play the Bucs had last year and he was appalled how many dropped passes there were. This was his take on NFL Live on Friday.

“The dropped passes were a problem, especially in the red area,” Riddick said. “I watched all of their red zone plays this morning and there were times there were touchdowns. The [ball] was in the hands of wide receivers. And they just flat out dropped them.

“And that is something, if you just look at the statistics, you say, ‘Oh, Jameis is slipping. He’s not throwing touchdown passes. He’s not putting the team in the end zone. Well, there is always context that needs to be brought into the discussion. With [Jameis] in particular, he does need to take care of the football better. He has to improve his deep ball accuracy. He has to improve his chemistry with DeSean Jackson.

“There were times where DeSean was four or five yards past his defender 20 or 30 yards downfield and Jameis is leaving the ball short or overthrowing him. And those are the type of things in the offseason you have to work on now.

“You know that DeSean is a downfield threat. Mike Evans is as good of a receiver as there is in the league. And they have weapons at tight end. There is no reason for the Bucs not to be better than they were last year. It is one of those things that you cannot put your finger on one thing. Just all of them collectively and they better raise their game. As Todd Monken decribed it, choose not to — what did he say?”

“Suck” is what Monken said.

Joe didn’t realize the Bucs had that many drops in the end zone in red zone offense. But Riddick is right. In the video below in the same segment, Riddick calls out several Bucs for gagging in the red zone, including Jameis. Riddick said the Bucs have perfect red zone weapons with Evans, O.J. Howard and Cam Brate.

Riddick also wondered why Jameis cannot connect with Evans when Evans has a four-inch advantage over a corner in the red zone.

Again, you can see the rest in the video below. Riddick also added about the Bucs red zone offense, “Make a play!”

Maybe some of the “pitch and catch” comment was also about the “catch” part as much as the “pitch” part?

Either way we need better calls / design/ execution and general philosophical approach to attacking once we get into opponent territory.

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

Yes, It is something to work on!!!! It seemed like instead of giving it full attention last year they were distracted by some sort of reality TV show!!!!!!

The work will be put in this offseason and training camp!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I think Jameis also has a very low interception rate in the red zone….so, this is puzzling…..
I’ve noticed him throwing high hardballs on occasion and I guess those are considered drops…..but, for me just because the ball hits the receiver’s hands doesn’t necessarily always mean it is a catch-able ball.

I definitely can recall a few and Riddick is so on point, no excuses, though play calling at time may have been suspect

so, HK was the reason why players dropped the ball….lol….HK is the reason why dirk called a predictable play….lol…BS….

@LC hit the nail on the head…..we need better calls / design/ execution and general philosophical approach to attacking once we get into opponent territory.

all the excuses are out the window!!!!!….they have the talent….no HK….no lovie…no DOM…..WIN OR GO FISHING!!!!!

I NEVER thought the pitch and catch talk was a primary JW thing…duh…

  10. webster Says:

    @ tampabaybuc

Jameis has only thrown 2 ints in the red zone.

    @ nole4jaboo

Only trolls and butt hurt mariota lovers believed that. There were many drops in the endzone. As the great receivers say, if the ball touches your hands you are supposed to catch it.

sleeping on Chris Godwin eh? Hope opposing DBS do the same…

Red zone efficiency will most assuredly be a major emphasis over the next 3 1/2 months.

  12. Alan T Barlow Says:

Winston just needs to calm down and focus, don’t play favorites, get the ball to someone, RELAX!

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

To me Riddick has always been an underrated anal..list. And he’s spot on here.
Jameis needs to improve this year. We..Are..Watching…

Nope. Don’t consider Godwin a red zone weapon. Same with DeSean Jackson. Same with Adam Humphries.

Evans, Howard and Brate are big dudes. Bigger targets. Better for red zone.

He is very good. Wish he was on the NFL Network. Same with Polian.
