Interesting Name To Monitor

May 9th, 2018

Versatile, durable OL available.

Right now, Joe has to believe the Bucs are just a wee bit concerned with what is going on with the right side of their offensive line.

Of course, just a few weeks after right tackle Demar Dotson broke the news on the Ira Kaufman Podcast he was cleared by Bucs medical staff to resume all football activities, we learned he had to have knee surgery.

Despite the suddenness, the Bucs have put a smiley face on the surgery, all but saying Dotson should be good to go by training camp.

With right guard J.R. Sweezy, rather than a smiley face, Bucs types seem to be using a poop emoji. Whenever Sweezy’s name comes up, faces turn dour, voices hush and shoulders are shrugged. Last week Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht was anything but giddy when discussing Sweezy, who missed the last two starts in 2017 with a lower leg injury.

Yeah, Joe knows the Bucs drafted violent Alex Cappa and plan to work him out at both tackle and guard. But he is a raw, Division-II player.

To Joe, it sure smells like the Bucs are going to pick up another offensive lineman between now and training camp. And a guy who was just released by the 49ers might be that guy.

Former Pro Bowler Zane Beadles was handed his walking papers last week. He (and his salary) became expendable when the 49ers stocked up on offensive linemen in the draft.

Entering last season before he was benched, Beadles had started 96 straight games for the Broncos and 49ers. That, friends, is durability. And Joe knows Bucs coach Dirk Koetter drools over offensive linemen who can play multiple positions. Beadles has played tackle, center and guard.

Joe isn’t about to suggest that Beadles is the next Dan Dierdorf and should start for the Bucs. Unlike Cappa and to a lesser degree Caleb Benenoch, Beadles has a bunch of experience and at least at one time played at a high level.

If the Bucs did sign Beadles, it would be like how the Bucs got Joe Hawley off the scrap heap and squeezed a decent year out of him.

It should unsettle Bucs fans that Dotson and Sweezy combined to miss 37 games the past three seasons.

Beadles has never missed a game in his eight-year NFL career.

    Do it now!

  2. Bob in Valrico Says:

The bucs seem to like benonoch.Get him ready, Pass on eight year veteran that you don’t know that was benched.

  3. Leighroy Says:

Joe answered his own question in this article. You don’t invest 3rd round picks on guys to then bury them in the depth chart a couple weeks later by signing another guy.

Cappa is your plan B at either position, no matter how “raw” he may be.

  4. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

LOL..he hasn’t missed any games….until of course he is signed by the Bucs.

  5. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

“Entering last season before he was benched”

Let me just stop you right there. We don’t need somebody who was benched on the 49ers.

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Have mixed feelings on this one. One day ago, here’s what the SF papers wrote about Zane Beadles … “Beadles, who spent the last two with the Niners, was released Monday. And there was a strong likelihood he wasn’t going to make the 53-man roster this season anyway. Not after posting 39.2 and 32.9 overall grades in 2016 and 2017, respectively, per Pro Football Focus.”

And here’s what ‘Inside the 49ers’ said a couple days ago … “Beadles, 31, started five games for the 49ers last season. He made one start at left guard, four starts at right tackle, and was a turnstile at both positions.”

Prior to that however, Beadles started EVERY game at Left Guard for 7 years with the Broncos (4 yrs), Jags (2 yrs) and 49ers. Did age catch up with him? Did the 49ers misuse him by moving him all around the OLine? Jason Licht probably needs to answer those questions BEFORE we put pen to paper & sign him.

  7. Casual Observer Says:

    Good possibility. Deserves a look.

  8. Bird Says:

There will be others guys cut moving forward toward start of season.

Sweezy is done and bucs can save 5 mil there so not sure bucs to worried about sweezy return.

Don’t know if benenoch really got chance at one spot cause they kept moving around So he can compete at guard. Also. Kappa is physical enough to play guard spot from day 1. And they can move kappa out to right tackle to replace Dotson eventually . (Evan smith is 3rd serviceable option ). They have time to see who fits where. Again , when one guard is a stud , the other guard spot while important can be filled with serviceable person. Especially since the center Jensen like to put people on their backs.

Now. Meniscal tear repairs have quick turn around so not as worried about Dotson being back for training camp. He is most experience player on bucs and doesn’t need the reps like other guys. I am more worried that Dotson seems to miss a few games each year so again kappa may be thrown into the fire there as well/

I think next year the bucs go defensive end and offensive line with 1st 2 picks.

  9. Jason Mclaurin Says:

It’s time to be 1a and 1b strong in the trenches on both sides of the ball too. I would love to get Beadles. They seem to be pretty high on Cappa though and I am as well. I’ve been hearing they plan on playing him at RT and he’s going to give Dotson serious heat too and I predict Dot’s going to the bench. I just feel the Bucs should commit a few more dollars to add some of these vets that’s still out here in free agency to bring those rookies along and that’s why I agree with your stance. Beadles would be perfect to push Dotson to the bench as well and allow Cappa to develop behind the depth chart as well.

  10. Buc believer Says:

What unsettled me more is we have a GM who would sign Sweezy and then the FIRST a year into the deal he doesn’t play at all because of a bad back which he had BEFORE she was signed. Then the second year misses games due to “injury”. Now with the third year approaching he is “hurt” again. I am concerned he is still on the team and not cut immediately….. like in Year freeking ONE!!! What the hell is wrong here?

  11. donuts Says:

Buc believer I agree with you…what is Licht thinking hanging on to Sweezy when he didnt play in year 1? The silence may be related to the fact Licht got conned and didnt want to fix it (injury settlement) as it would highlight his ineptitude as a GM. His drafts are good but his FA moves are shaky at IMHO. Its going to be interesting to see if all these DL FA work out.

These types of non-moves on unproductive players are what make me think the Bucs are 8-8 this year and not in the playoffs.

  12. Destinjohnny Says:

We have all these weapons and a marginal offensive line

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We can do much better…no need to panic

  14. Pickgrin Says:

Evan Smith’s grades for play in 2017 were significantly higher than Zane Beadles’ grades. Hell – even Sweezy was graded higher than this guy last year.

That equals a big fat – NO WAY on signing Beadles.

49ers took a $600k cap hit just to get rid of him – so he’s obviously not even worth having as a veteran back-up…

  15. tnew Says:

I’ve got a hunch the Bucs will be running left a bunch this year.

  16. Pryda ...sec147 Says:

More help to protect our man Jameis let’s go for it

  17. K2 Says:

The only problems is a 53 man roster. Which young talent should they cut or try to get to the practice squad. It all looks good until you have a salary cap and a roster max.

  18. Waterboy Says:

    @Blake_Bucsfan

    My exact thoughts.

  19. Lou. Says:

Look at Cappa’s physical attributes spider graph. He measures out as slow and weak.

May be a project, maybe a lost choice based on over optimism

  20. Reality_43 Says:

Yeah that spider graph was embarrassing next to Ali Marpet’s.

  21. webster Says:

Why does joe cry for every free agent that is released?

  22. Mike Johnson Says:

My Man Sweezy will probably come back and play say…3 games or so then..go back by the pool, smoke a bowl (for medicinal purposes of course), put on his floppy hat and..hit the blocking sled…all the way to the ATM withdrawal. Sweez is..the greatest Spinmaster our Bucs have ever produced!! I luv him because..he gets his money for nothin and his chicks..for free.

  23. Alan T Barlow Says:

How could he be cleared then need to have knee surgery, something smells like my septic tank! Zane going to be any better, IDK, but that smells like sending good money after bad, again! Don’t hold hands and think it’s going to be ok next year, drop kick, find something for our need NOW! THIS IS NOT A REST HOME OR A TRIAGE FOR THE HURT AND WOUNDED! This is a full push now, all the way though, not a all out go to the draft and then pitter-patter afterwords! Try a trade for Lane Johnson, Mitchell Schwartz, Daryl Williams, Bryan Bulaga, Ryan Ramczyk! Don’t pick up a throw away, get somebody that somebody wants to keep! PROTECT WINSTON NOW OR WHICHEVER QB IS THERE! Sorry, getting tired of we’re great after the draft then fall apart before actual season starts!

  24. Defense Rules Says:

Lou, I saw exactly the same thing about Cappa … slow & weak. That article with the spider graphs included the statement that Cappa “doesn’t have near the measurables that Marpet had when Tampa took him back in 2015.” Licht said he wanted him as a future RT, but a couple of analyses I’ve read project him more at Guard. In that case, going against defensive players in training camp like GMC, Allen & Vea should give us all a good clue as to how well Cappa can transition from Div II to playing with the big boys. Like everyone else, I sure do hope that he works out, but my early gut feeling is that he’s not another Marpet & will struggle.

  25. unbelievable Says:

Lol Joe how you gonna lump Dotson and Sweezy together in the total number of games they’ve missed?

Sweezy missed an entire season, plus part of the next season. Obviously Dotson has had health issues too, but equating them is ridiculous.

  26. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Go get the guy now the bucs need help like 2 years ago and for whatever reason Licht closes his eyes to this….the trenches on the defensive side of the ball seemed to have been fixed but the offense is still behind

  27. JJBucFan Says:

Cappa is slow and weak until you see his film. He was D2 which is better than D3 where Marpet came from. Cappa was getting a lot of love from the scouts just like Marpet was. At least let them open camp before you guys proclaim him a wasted pick please. He is an immediate upgrade from anything we had on our bench.

  28. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

    Been saying this for weeks…
The Bucs need a solid depth tackle AND to keep Sweezy for interior depth to make the offensive line truly better and stable for the season – where injuries are inevitable and depth is the difference between decent and very good.

The Bucs could make two shrewd moves with two ex-49ers.
    Sign Beadles.
    Sign Eric Reid at safety.

And just like that the Bucs would have true depth and competition at every single position on the roster – for the first time since the Super Bowl era.

    Go get this tackle.

FIX THE TRENCHES, FIX THE BUCS!!

  29. 813bucboi Says:

first, the bucs need to find out if benenoch is a guard or tackle…..then go from there with his development…..let him focus on one position….

imo, we should open up with d.smith, cappa, jensen, marpet, Dotson, and run the ball….all of our olinemen are road graders….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  30. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Prefer him over Sweezy in a heartbeat even if Sweezy was ready to go by week 1

  31. Guzziep Says:

Every year some obvious weakness dooms the Bucs, last year DL and RB, 2016 WR, etc, the only consistent failure is our coaching and FAs

  32. Guzziep Says:

This year’s obvious year wrecker is the right side OL, and coaching of course #JIMSWARTZ2019

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Per Rotoworld:
…A mega-bust at left guard in 2016, Beadles was no better as he shifted all along the line last season… May 7 – 3:12 PM

    Not just a BUST…but a MEGABUST!

    PASS!!!!!!

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Some of the posters here actually take the time to look these suggestions up. Cheers to them. That’s the right thing to do.

Then you have the casual fans who say ‘sign him!’ at the mere mention of any name. Total sheep.

At least see if the guy is worth signing first, people.

  35. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I agree with Joe here. This guy makes perfect short term sense. Hopefully he’s just insurance and the combination of Cappa and Benenoch solve the right side of our OL…for now and the future. We’re getting really close to having an OL that gets to play together for multiple seasons…gaining some synergy.

  36. pick6 Says:

i can only assume the bucs are trying to avoid an injury settlement and will cut sweezy as soon as he can pass a physical. that means there is $5+ million of cap space easily cleared and room for an experienced starter in the OL room

  37. Jarhead Says:

I agree with DestinJohnny, we have way too many weapons to be limited by our offensive line. However, as been said before you can’t fix every hole in one offseason when you have many. Hate to look this far forward but it’s time we spend a first rounder on OLine. In the meantime we have serviceable players on the right side, concerned but not as much as some of you. Next years draft we put the icing on the cake of this years #BuildtheTrenches

  38. Bill Says:

If they cut Sweezy, they should go there. Beadles hasn’t been starter quality in about a few years, but dude can play everywhere but center.

  39. bucsfan13 Says:

@ donuts Vinny Curry and JPP no names lmao?

  40. John meeks Says:

I say give Jeremy true blood a call,he will at least start a big fight in training camp!bet that up!!!
