“Go Straight And Woop Everything In Front Of You”

Early fire at rookie minicamp

It was quite a show today at Buccaneers rookie minicamp in the sweaty grind at One Buc Palace.

And the star was new Bucs defensive line coach Brentson Buckner, who clearly already has taken up residence in the buttocks of first-round pick Vita Vea.

Before Joe watched Buckner in action, an important guy at team headquarters told Joe that Buckner has been a sparkling addition of the Bucs offseason. He’s all over his guys and they are responding.

And that carried over today, Buckner’s first time on the field with rookie Vea and various undrafted free agents and tryout players.

Buckner is one intense cat. The former nasty Panthers, Steelers, Bengals and 49ers defensive tackle clearly loves his job and is bringing a different mentality than booted d-line coach Jay Hayes.

Bucker was all over Vea on a couple of occasions. “Go straight and woop everything in front of you,” Buckner implored. And he continued to bark at Vea to use his power in a more north-south way. “You do that and it’s all going to work. If you can’t do that, I can’t help you.”

Vea had to be at least a tiny bit confused. This was a no-pads, no-contact practice. No, neither Vea nor anyone else was mauling anyone, but it’s a fine line. Even Buckner was barking that players should stay in control and that they’re only to go 65 percent.

But the message was clear to Vea, adjust your technique and get your mindset right — immediately.

Buckner spread the love around. At one point, a defensive linemen said “my bad” to Bucker and he fired back. “It can’t be nobody but your bad.”

Man, if Buckner can manage to get 75 percent of the Bucs defensive line talent playing at their peak, this defense will be improved from Day 1.

Holy cow- some teaching, tough love and intensity from a DL coach who has credibility and years played in the league. About freakin time!

I am in love and grinning ear to ear!!

One of the Cardinals fan sites pointed out that when Buckner signed with Tampa a bunch of Cardinal players wished him the best, said he was a great coach, etc… but none of those players were defensive lineman.

As a fan I don’t care if the players like him or not so long as he gets the job done, but it was an interesting little tidbit I thought I’d share.

Always hated Buckner as a player and this is why. Glad he’s on our side now.

  12. Not there yet Says:

You can be this way with rookies. I’m more curious about his style with the starters because those are the guys who will help spread the message to the young players. Guess we won’t see McCoy getting pushed clear across the field side ways right before being pancaked

  13. BucEmUp Says:

Buckner can’t do anything with Smith’s 12 yard cushion coverage. Keep holding your breath if you think it helps

  14. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

    Luv the Buckner addition!

Hopefully, McCoy is reading this gets some gap integrity through osmosis.
