Third-day Bargain?

April 17th, 2018

ACC Sleeper?

Joe brought word recently that Helmet Hair Mel Kiper discussed a couple of running backs that he thinks are third-day draft bargains next week.

Of course Joe was interested because he understands the Bucs need a running back.

One was North Carolina State’s Nyheim Hines. This Hines is not the biggest guy but he has some wheels and can catch the ball.

Well, not only is Hines on Kiper’s radar, Hines has caught the attention of Brian Baldinger. The former NFL offensive lineman and analyst for NFL Network has been working on tape of running backs and believes Hines, if used correctly, could be a serious weapon for an NFL offense.

Joe has embedded a handful of Twitter videos of Baldinger breaking down Hines.

My late “sleeper” is Ryan Nall out of Oregon St. the kid is 6″2′, 235lbs and has some nifty moves and wiggle for a guy that big! Ran a 4.58 and had a very good combine. Had just under 1,000 yards rushing last year and scored a whole bunch of TD’s. He would be a great compliment to a guy like Sony Michel. Nall probably could go anywhere from Round 5 to Round 7.

If used correctly that already doesn’t sound like things our coaching staff would do.

Just like joe doesn’t have faith in our D. Coaches t]o coach a rookie CB…i dont have faith in our O. Coaches to be creative and “use” players “correctly”

A couple days ago, SR from PR predicted the Bucs would move up into the 3rd to grab Hines as his “best bet” for the Bucs selecting a RB between Rds 1>3.

The Bucs like Hines for sure – but I doubt Jason would be willing to pay extra to select him on day 2.

Now if Rashaad Penny was sitting there in the early 3rd rd and we hadn’t selected a RB yet – I’m pretty sure Licht would gladly pay what’s needed to move up for Penny.

    Used correctly . . .
    Yeah, wont happen here

  9. Guzziep Says:

Hard pass we need another 3-4 linebacker…..

  10. Rick Says:

Even if the coaching staff doesn’t send in the plays to use Hines correctly Jameis has shown the stones to check out of them from time to time and does what he wants or feels will work best. That and Hines speed can make up for what Koetter/Monken lack in creativity and nerve. I would love to have This speed demon in the back field to pair with Barber especially if we get Nelson, Hernandez, or Wynn. Would free us up to get a needed DB in round 2 Instead of using that pick for a RB there. Not withstanding what we could get in a trade down from 7 ?

  11. Bird Says:

Probably need 2 backs. One guy in later round that has filthy speed like the bears speed back

  12. Bird Says:

    Tarik cohen^^^

  13. Rick Says:

Even better if we found an Alstott like bruiser late in the draft to compliment Hines well. Thunder and Lightning part 2 BABY!!

  14. JDR Says:

Cam sims 6’5 210 we Alabama

  15. Guzziep Says:

Barkley or trade down both unlikely…..another 5-11 season with incompetent coaching, inability to fill holes on roster likely

Pretty sure I didn’t see Koetter call one pass play to a RB last year. Man I hope he’s completely wiped out that old play book.

Am I the only one here who is prejudiced towards LSU players and against Alabama players.

Obviously both schools have produced many NFL stars and perhaps it’s just our experience….OJ is certainly a Bama blessing for us…but look at all the late picks we’ve scarfed from LSU.

Sadly my favorite LSU choice this year is Guice and he’s going to come after our first pick and probably before our second.

There is a pattern there (not yours). LSU pumps out NFL studs right and left. Bama players (yes, there are exceptions), especially defenders, don’t seem to pan out like LSU players.

Joe’s pretty convinced Bama players are maxed out by Saban and Joe was told by an NFL suit Bama players, in part due to very physical practices, wear out the treads more quickly than many schools.

That’s why Bama players spook Joe. With exception of a few (Julio Jones springs to mind), not many Bama players dominate on the next level like they do in college.

  22. AlteredEgo Says:

Bama…players can be surrounded by great talent which makes their highlights look like it is all them….same from other dominate programs and any particular time….Riedel Anthony …Jaquaez Green from the throw back machine….

  23. Pickgrin Says:

    ^^^
Which is exactly why Minkah Fitzpatrick is a “riskier” pick than Derwin James if you are selecting a safety with a high pick.

  24. Bucs55 Says:

Kallen Ballage is my sleeper running back in this draft runs a 4.48 at 6’1 reminds me of A mixture of L. Bell and McFadden

  25. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

This guy is a 5’9 197 pound Charles Sims. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaard pass.

  26. Joe Says:

This guy is a 5’9 197 pound Charles Sims. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaard pass.

    EXACTLY what Joe thought!

  27. Banging Buc Says:

That’s why I think the Bucs should sign CJ Anderson. Besides Barkley, Guice and possibly Michel there are no “bellcow” backs. Sure we could get a Nick Chubb or Ronald Jones but they would be more effective/efficiencient as 3rd down backs. If we sign Anderson to a 3yr/11M (first year guaranteed) we could allow him to be the 3rd down back. Peyton Barber would be a good backup. That allows you to use the 1st and 2nd picks to fix the secondary then you can use the 4th and extra 6th to move into the 3rd and get a Hines or Penny. Or you could get a back like Arkum Wadley in the 4th. It’s not fair to Mike Smith and the defensive staff to keep drafting offensively and giving them second tier talent to build a defense with. Go get James and a CB like Isiah Oliver.

  28. Banging Buc Says:

*i meant we could allow Anderson to be the bellcow. He had 1007 yards last year behind an abysmal oline. Our oline wasn’t half as bad and Martin, Barber and Rodgers only ran for 1073 yards combined. A backfield that consist of an Anderson and Penny would definitely create a better offense for us.
