Skeptical Of Nick Chubb

April 24th, 2018

Nick Chubb had a great 2017 college season and was a memorable running back at the University of Georgia, but does that make him a wise early draft pick?

A famous Georgia Bulldog has reservations.

Joe is talking about Tampa-raised, ex-Georgia QB Aaron Murray. With his playing career apparently ending last season when the Rams cut him, 27-year-old Murray is now a college football analyst for CBS Sports.

Murray was on CBS Sports Radio this week and was asked about the Georgia rushing tandem entering the draft, Chubb and Sony Michel. Murray explained that he loves both as people and for their unselfishness as studs sharing a backfield and loving the success of the other.

However, Murray expressed skepticism about the durability and the long-term health of Chubb. Murray doesn’t think Chubb is the same guy he was before he suffered a horrific knee injury in his second year (2015) with Georgia.

Chubb’s game is limited but he’s powerful in his downhill-running ability, Murray says, whereas Michel is the total package.

Might Chubb’s old knee injury scare away the Bucs? Maybe.

But Joe suspects the Bucs’ regime wouldn’t care much about how Chubb might wear down in, say, 2021. Pounding the rock in September is a much more pressing concern.

All-you-can-eat buffet available starting at 6 p.m. and runs all night long. Be there!! Joe and Ira Kaufman will be in the house with the Stick Carriers and The Commish. Raw energy and Bucs love everywhere.

I am on the Nick Chubb bandwagon with the 2nd pick !

  2. Reality_43 Says:

He is definitely not the same as he was before he hurt his knee.
IMO that man could be the #1 overall pick he was soooo good.

I agree that if we get 5 good years out of him mission accomplished.
Look at what the man squats if you have reservations about his knee.

He WILL pound that rock in year 1 and several have mentioned him as an Offensive Rookie of the Year Sleeper.

I would be beyond thrilled if we are fortunate enough to land Nick Chubb in the 2nd round of all things.

  3. Alpha Buc fan Says:

Injury history with RB is never good. Everyone wanted the Bucs to grab dalvin cook last year an don’t get me wrong he’s a stub but 3 or 4 games into the Season he tears his ACL an done for the year. Doesn’t matter how good you are if you can’t stay on the field then what’s the point

  4. Joeypoppems Says:

I agree that he is not the same player he was in 2014 before the injury. He is still a very good RB tho. And he has improved since the injury as well. 2017 tape is much better than 2016. If he could get back to that 2014 form he will be the steal of the draft.

    Thats a big if tho.

  5. Sealbuc Says:

I think we should try to trade up in bottom of the first. That way we get that 5th year opition.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

RB is a crap shoot…..more than most positions in the draft….but we need one….probably two…..It helps to have some cheap players in skill positions going forward….we have Godwin & Howard…..let’s add a RB.

  7. Evolvingbucfan Says:

Since when has an injury scared the Bucs away? i will say this if you have a history of injuries such as Dalvin Cook did in college with 3 shoulder surgeries, yes i’d be leary, but Chubb’s was a freak accident and it’s not like he is just coming off surgery, i believe the best thing to happen to him was share the carriers with Sony and it helped him get his feet and confidence back.

    GET HIM!!

  8. Pa Privateer Says:

I am not an expert, but I like Michel’s tape better than Chubb’s tape. I will happily support Chubb if he is on the Bucs this fall, but I just like Michel’s game a little more.

Michel would compliment/balance with Barber more.

  9. Alexander Nascimento Says:

    Morning, Joe.
Would you be ok if the Bucs signed CJ Anderson and say a RB on the 3rd day of the draft?

  10. Kobe Faker Says:

“Nick Chubb is Peyton Barber without the experience and a bad wheel”

    Kobe Faker

  11. BRock Says:

So you’re comfortable drafting a RB who had a major knee injury/rebuild in Chubb, but uncomfortable drafting Derwin James because of his knee? Derwin only had a meniscus(cartilage) tear that was actually allowed to heal properly by sewing it, not just removing the torn portion. This was a longer recovery period, but none of the shock absorbing cartilage was removed and should have zero impact on Derwin’s ability to play at the highest level and have a long career.

  12. 2Anglican1609 Says:

Chubb’s injury to his PCL will always be an issue through his career IMO

  13. Lord Cornelius Says:

He tested extremely well at the combine.

    At 227 lbs:

    4.52 40
    38.5″ vert
    7.09 3 cone
    10′ 8″ broad jump
    29 bench reps

That’s a powerful athletic as f*ck man injury history or not.

  14. Casual Observer Says:

Haven’t the Bucs docs checked him out? Thoroughly? If not, he is a big question. But, if they have, and give a thumbs up, then get him. IMO.

  15. Pickgrin Says:

    I’d be happy with either.

Michel is a better fit because of his versatility but Sony Michel is also likely to be a top 20 pick. No way he lasts past #30. Nick Chubb may well be available at #38 however and if he is – the Bucs should probably take him.

  16. Jjones Says:

Chubbs knee has PROVEN to be fine i.e. 2016 and 2017 played in just about every single game.

If you watch his game tape you can see he cuts exactly as he used to on that knee without a hitch.

He lost about a quarter of a step after his injiry but he’s gotten stronger and faster every year and I believe he’s the best pick at RB, IMO.

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Test

  18. Pepsi Says:

crossing my fingers any of Guice, Michel, Chubb are available with our 2nd pick. They may all be gone, and Jones is a pretty good consolation prize, but really hoping one of those guys are there.

  19. Evolvingbucfan Says:

Just imagine if we get Nelson in Rnd#1 and Chubb in Rnd #2 ????? who wouldn’t be raising your ice cold adult beverage to that???

  20. Issic haggins Says:

He is a down hill guy that is good with some push , if you don’t have push which the Bucs don’t he is not very effective at getting skinny or darting through small holes !!! Watch the Bama tape he was a total non factor and such a non factor that Kirby was using Sony and the Freshmen more , rather than Chubb. Chubb was completely ineffective in the title game and heck if-that was his only tape he may not be drafted before the 5 th round. Now if you can control the line a bit he is pretty low and slithers through and bounces off tackles pretty well. An absoulute product of getting lots of carries/ oppurtunity!!!

  21. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    Saquon. Barkley.

Go Bucs! Go Bold! Go Barkley! Go Primetime!

  22. BucfanBF Says:

I get a Chubb thinking of having Chubb or Michel in our backfield. Let those horses eat……

  23. 813bucboi Says:

I like chubb but I think there are a few RB’s that would fit the bucs better…..guice…Michel….r.jones….k.johnson….bo scarbrough….cj Anderson…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  24. Jjones Says:

Bama had to shut down Chubb or Michel and Chubb ripped Bama the 1st time for 146yrds so they weren’t going to let that happen again.

Watch more tape on Chubb because he’s not only a north and south runner but also very effective bouncing it to the outside. He’s got cutting ability just like everyone else maybe even better because he sets up the defenders before he makes his 3rd step and has insanely quick hip. I believe he and Sony are the the most intelligent and mature runners entering the draft imo.

All of these RB’S have been held to 50 yards or less in their careers…

    Barkley: 5 times 3 years
Michel: 16 times 4years (split carries with Nick Chubb)
Guice: 12 times 3 years (split carries with Fournette)
    Jones: 9 times 3 years
Chubb: 8 times 3-1/2 years (split carries with Michel)
Johnson: 7 times 2 years (12 times 1st yr, split carries with Barber)
Penny: 6 times 2 years (1st 2 yrs split carries with Pumphrey and company)

    100+ yard career games…

    Barkley: 15
    Michel: 11
    Guice: 12
    Jones: 14
    Chubb: 24
    Johnson: 11
    Penny: 16

You also have to weigh the competition each player faced in their conference, which teams held them to 50 yards or less and who they ran over for 100 yards or more.

There are obvious arguments attached to each and every player on this list but personally I find what Chubb and Michel did AMAZING.

  25. Evolvingbucfan Says:

Jjones great analysis, those #’s are telling especially with the 100+ yard games, gotta love it!! much props.

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo doesn’t have a “chubb”…..Pablo has an elongated arc like Hamus and Hason Pierre Paul (that’s right….JPP has one….a bit shorter than Pablo’s but everyone’s is shorter than Pablo’s) Anyway…..Pablo understands why amigos may be skeptical of one Chubb & not the other Chubb.”

  27. Bucsfanman Says:

There are a number of RBs that suffered injuries that went on to GREAT NFL careers. Frank Gore and Clinton Portis come to mind.
Chubb has to be in the conversation.

  28. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    @Jjones…. 🙂 🙂

You f*ckn people are somethin’ some times.

    Saquon. Barkley.

    Go Bucs!

  29. Bucsfanman Says:

BetterBuc- Short of an epic trade, you can’t possibly believe he’ll be there at #7?!
That said, IF he is there, Koetter better sprint to the podium. There’s no question in my mind that he is the best player in the draft, hands down.

  30. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

At no point during all my commentary for months that pertains to SAQUON… much to the satisfaction of many, and to the dismay of others ( 🙂 ), THIS Bucs fan never thought nor will he that SAQUON BARKLEY would ever be “available” at #7. THIS Bucs fan yes, believes, that Jason is going to have to GO GET him. Through a MYRIAD of possibilities.

Go Bucs! Go Bold! Go Barkley! Go Primetime!

  31. StPeteBucsFan Says:

We really need to be careful with stats. I’ve pointed out the Barkley is a receiving as much as a running threat with over 50 catches over 600 yards last year which is more than the career totals for the other backs.

In looking at his games below 50 yards rushing last year only one of them reflected poorly…the contest against Ohio State. The others were blowouts against schools like Georgia State and Rutgers…apparently Franklin didn’t want to run up the score.

  32. Pistol Pete Says:

Atlanta radio said there are reports surfacing that there is a medical concern about Sony Michel. They’re also freaking about Julio deleting all of his falcons pics from social media…lol.

  33. Reality_43 Says:

    @BBB

Is he grouped with f**kn people because he gave stats to support someone other than your wet dream boy.

If he falls, we all agree it would be criminal to not take him.

Realistically though, I do not agree with mortgaging the future of this team to move up and take him, when someone like Nick Chubb will be there in the 2nd.

  34. Jjones Says:

@BBB…If Barkley is at #7 I don’t know how we don’t pick him, plain and simple. But being a bit more realistic I find Chubb to be someone we can pick up day 2 possibly and whom I believe will have just as much success due to his body of work.

My analysis isn’t to prove any one person wrong, it’s to show that you can’t scrutinize any one player for one or more bad games or one or more great games but to look at their body of work as a whole and competition faced feeds into that whether we like it or not.

There’s so much that goes into it like continuity with players, players lost to draft, coaches switching teams, injuries etc etc etc. I’m not blind to those facts.

Penn States Oline was up and down while Barkley was there from being ranked 6th out of 14, to dead last 2016 and 2017 had a much better oline although I cant find their exact ranking anywhere for some reason.

Georgia faced much stiffer competition and in 2014 was ranked 8th out of 14, ranked #1 2015, ranked #7 2016 and 2017 ranked 12th out 14. And in that 2017 (last season) changed their Oline coach and had far less players return to the Oline for the 2017 season. All these factors must be weighed to get a true idea of what each RB’s success was at their respective schools and what it could be at the next level.

  35. Jjones Says:

    *ranked 6th out of 14 in 2015

  36. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    🙂

Careful @Reality_43….it sounds like you might be the third addition to my growing fan club, with @Poppems and @JeffBuc as the founding members.

    You people.

Go Bucs! Go Bold! Go Barkley! Go Primetime!

  37. Evolvingbucfan Says:

If Chubb never had that Knee injury would he be the top pick out of all the RB’s position ? One could argue yes…or Maybe.. but if some how Barkley is there I agree you run to the podium, he is an athletic freak as we can all agree who can do it all. But we get a chance to get Nelson @ 7 and a good chance to get a very good back in Nick Chubb #38, which I am all for…can’t wait to see how it all shakes up.

  38. Jjones Says:

I agree Evolveingbucfan, with running to the podium if Barkley or Nelson are there!

  39. Jjones Says:

@SPBF….you’re right about the stat line comparison argument, I don’t always like to lean on such things. But I do believe you have to fairly assess players at times with said stat lines.

Barkleys body of work in recieving is unparalleled for sure but they’d also lost players like Godwin that year and he was utilized more as he had 402yrds 2016 to his 632yrds 2017.

Georgia is a power run team so that just is what it is but they also breed amd coach up a certain type of back. They’re always signing 5 star talent to their roster year after year, Gurley being a perfect example.

  40. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

I’ll take Michel over Chubb any day of the week and THRICE on Sundays.

  41. Reality_43 Says:

    🙂
Am I supposed to feel like the hyena saying the name Mufasa and Shaking.
I’m pretty certain the term Deflection applies to you as well.

If you need help with that one just ask @webster to look it up in his dictionary.

  42. Reality_43 Says:

I would take Chubb over Michel every day of the week then sit back in amazement on Sundays

  43. BucFanInNc Says:

National Championship Game versus Alabama. Michel was light years better than Chubb. No daylight and making something out of nothing. Which is What 90 percent of run plays in the NFL are.

  44. Jjones Says:

Again, Bamas objective was to shut him down and every back in this year’s draft has been shut down at some point.

  45. Jjones Says:

@BucFanInNc…I live in Asheville, NC, you wouldn’t happen to live here too? Just saying, we’re surrounded by Panther fans, be nice to link up with a fellow Bucs fan in the area for games!

  46. Jeffbuc Says:

    Betterbuckenbelieveit
Keep pounding the dead horse. Yes you are right everyone else is wrong. Get over yourself we all realize we are not trading up for a runningback. But you on the other hand keep posting and posting that we have to. Other people are just stating statistics that show there are other good running backs available with out having to trade. And then you get mad at them for just stating facts. Wow you are so wise we are all not worthy to even read your posts. And if we disagree with you you revert to personal attacks. We all agree Barkley is a good player and I think pretty much everyone has said they would run to the podium if he is there at 7. So you are not some draft guru going out on a limb and letting all of us no about barkley. We all know he is a great player but we are also being realistic and looking at other backs that we have a better chance at getting. Like I said be a man Thursday and don’t go hide when we don’t trade up for Barkley Thursday. And don’t forget to include fan club member number 2 joeypoppems and newest member j jones.

  47. Jeffbuc Says:

I just picture betterbuckenbelieveit plugging his ears and humming when anyone talks about any runninback not named Barkley.

  48. Jjones Says:

I typically don’t go after anyone on this site unless they attack me. But there are a select few that all they want is to attack any and everyone for their opinion….WEBSTER…whom by the way got it for his lack of comprehension and knowledge about the Jameis article late last night LOL!!!

  49. Hodad Says:

Peyton Barber can be the hammer, Sony is more what you look for in todays NFL back. He’s so much smoother, and does not have the injury history.

  50. Noah Spence Says:

Injuries are a major concern for athletes at all positions. His body is too young to say he can’t be the same player.

  51. Noah Spence Says:

Better yet just draft two running backs because injury to one would once again limit our offense, that’s how our season would have been had we drafted Dalvin Cook who went down for the season in week 4. Stop pinning the hope of this offense on this one position, the offense should hum no matter who is back there. Dirk can’t play Doug Martin to use him as an excuse this year
