Questionable Output

April 27th, 2018

Yes, you can catch it.”

There’s more to playing cornerback than intercepting passes.

Thankfully, that’s so, because the Bucs’ new pair of second-round cornerbacks seem to be allergic to squeezing footballs.

M.J. Stewart out of North Carolina has no picks in the past two seasons. Carlton Davis from Auburn has just one. That’s 49 games combined with just one interception.

Simply put, that’s hard to do when you have two talented defensive backs!

When Vernon Hargreaves was drafted, the Bucs made a big deal about his ballhawking skills and interceptions in college. Ryan Smith, though, didn’t have a pick in his final year at North Carolina Central, for whatever that’s worth.

What does it all mean? Joe doesn’t know. It’s just stats.

Heck, versatile veteran cornerback Robert McClain had three picks for the Bucs last season and he can’t find a job in the NFL. Presumably, the Bucs feel Davis and Stewart can deliver more than McClain.

If just one of them does, then Jason Licht nailed it.

    They are shutdown corners.

  2. JJV Says:

They are both reaches for second round picks imho.

  3. TonyC Says:

Davis is going to be good not sure about Stewart (based on film).

  4. Trubucfan22 Says:

Hargreaves, Stewart and Davis are press man cover DBs…. food for thought.

  5. Captain Crunch Says:

Just wondering is mike smith gonna actually be ON THE FIELD coaching this year instead of being up in the press box.

  6. JimmyJack Says:

Alarming stat. Makes you wonder what they see in those two. Hopefully whatever they see includes getting them to produce more picks

  7. R.O. Says:

Omg.. you whining about our corners all offseason. Then you complain when we pick 2 corners. JC..

  8. John5 Says:

I still don’t know why we cut Robert McClain. I thought he stepped up when we needed him and played really well. Yet no one has picked him up. Maybe there’s something underlying that isn’t public. But with backs we have I didn’t get cutting him.

  9. JJV Says:

Now get some OL x2 in the fourth round with next two picks.

  10. Joel Says:

Davis was the leader of the Auburn defense. Played high school ball in Miami. He’s the real deal.

  11. JimmyJack Says:

    JJV…..I endorse your idea

  12. Frank Pillow Says:

We may’ve outsmarted ourselves with the trade-back, but having the ammo to get back into the 3rd is nice. There are still a ton of quality players out there. As we sit here, Licht has bolstered the D with both a mammoth DT and quality DE( 3rd for JPP), added two CBs and an RB with some sizzle. Let put this into perspective for all the folks clamoring for D James at 7…we are a better football team at 4 positions- DT DE RB and CB- with 5 picks left in the draft.

  13. darin Says:

    Jjv
How often did you watch them play? I think Davis will probably start right away. Stewart might be moved to safety. That’s wouldnt be a good idea with this staff. Theyre 0-fer in that scenario. Anyway they are both legit 2nd rounders. Theyre both better at press, which is interesting. I sure hope this staff doesnt mess up both em them. Licht had to get corners.

  14. ncbucfanhere Says:

@Trubucfan24. Yes they are….great observation!! I sense a change of philosophy on defense. Even how the Dline plays. Mike Smith had two 330lb plus DTs anchoring his Jags def when they were formidable, John Henderson and Marcus Stroud!! They played gap defense and shut the run game down year in and year out. I don’t expect to see the DBs 10-15 yds off the line of scrimmage. I’m looking for Siran Neal in the 4th rd at Safety. I personally LOVE every pick Licht has made.

  15. LocalJoker Says:

This guy Mike Smith is the problem with this defense. They need to run this guy out of town!

  16. Bird Says:

We should draft one more corner. Just better odds of one of them actually getting playing time.

Never heard of these guys. There were some dbs rated pretty high still on board. Hope our scouts are right. Again we need one to start.

  17. Mike Johnson Says:

Davis is an outstanding choice. Lets see year, Vea, Jones and Davis..all great choices. I do have a lot of concerns about Stewrt though. We shall see.

  18. WhatTheBuc Says:

Lack of INT is a bad metric for defensive backs. Sometimes it means no one dared throw their way. Troy Vincent didn’t have many picks in his UW tenure and he was darn near lockdown in the pros IIRC.

  19. gambelero Says:

I want to give Licht and his team the benefit of the doubt. They attended pro days, had guys in, talked to teammates and watched hours and hours of tape. Time will tell. I think people feel that Stewart will play in the slot with Davis on the outside. I’m thinking they want to use Davis at free safety. It’s also think it’s possible that they see Steward as a strong safety. Or maybe they’re just looking at life after Miko’s husband retires.

  20. webster Says:

Some of you guys are unbelievable and hypocrites. Let me get this straight. Many of you bashed licht for not signing trumaine whoever from the rams for 16 mil per who only had 1 int last year and i believe only 1 int the year before that. Nevermind the fact his own team UPGRADED with two cornerbacks should have been a red flag to you. Oh and he has never made a pro bowl. Yet you want to complain that our two new draft picks which will cost considerably less than trumaine doesnt have many picks? Only buc fans.

  21. Bird Says:

The kid from auburn had a lot of highlights. Not sure if good or bad. Bad if teams picked on him a lot?

    Fingers crossed.

  22. William Berry Says:

I don’t understand the complaint about Mike Smith calling the defense from the press box. What’s up with that?

  23. BucThatNoise Says:

Lack of INT is a bad metric for defensive backs. Sometimes it means no one dared throw their way. Troy Vincent didn’t have many picks in his UW tenure and he was darn near lockdown in the pros IIRC.

  24. Eric Says:

So feared nobody threw at them?

  25. JR Allen Says:

i love my Bucs Fans but damn. we always have to find something to complain about. Damn, let these guy at least get on a plane first. SMH

  26. JJV Says:

Darin, it was just my opinion for the DBs that were still available. Obviously, the Pats, Panthers, and Falcons felt the same. Most teams passed on them. Again, it is just how I felt about it.

  27. Licht’s Out Says:

They are shutdown corners sez Buccaneer BrownEye…

LOL…I guess you do write fairy fantasy…so there’s that!

Scrubs instead of Chubb…this is the fallout of winning game 16 at the gun. It’s almost as if Licht wanted to hedge his bet, do Belichick a solid in hopes of getting his scout gig back with the Pats next season ( which he is well equipped to do btw ).

  28. Phillip Says:

    MJ gonna play SS..

  29. Eric Says:

Looks like we’re better, but the league is designed for 5-11 to get batter.

I’m sure the saints, Falcons and panthers think they did too.

    We shall see.

  30. BucThatNoise Says:

Actually, yeah…that’s closer to the truth than the opposite. Terrell Buckley had 11 picks his senior year, for example. But he gave up a ton of TD’s for FSU and did the same in the pros. A more accurate barometer would be how many times he was targeted and how many catches he gave up.

  31. Bucs Guy Says:

Bucs going for OL. Orlando Brown from OKU? Didn’t perform well at the combine, but gave up zero sacks in 2017. I think on field is more important than the underwear Olympics. Nobody had him dropping this far.

  32. Bucs Guy Says:

    Never mind.

  33. Lamarcus Says:

    Licht

U hit the jackpot and ya blew it……

  34. BushidoEvans Says:

Can anyone tell me how many INTs Jalen Ramsey had his 3 years in college?…I’ll wait.

  35. SOEbuc Says:

Bird…You haven’t heard of him but many others have. He was a top rated CB on many lists expected to go in the second. He aint no punk bihatch.

I love Licht as a scout and I’m excited to see what he plans to do with All-ACC Stewart and what he can do.

  36. Phillip Says:

    It was like between 1-3.

Comparing these guys to Jalen isn’t fair the dude was a can’t miss prospect and why he was drafted in the top 5.

I like the Davis pick more.. Okay with MJ if the kid can stay out of trouble

  37. Dreambig Says:

Lots of creepy little draft nomes out tonight. I think the draft has been excellent so far. Covering a lot of needs. We can grade these picks next year but so far, it seems really strong.

  38. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

This is why you don’t draft for need. All three second round picks were reaches for need with much more talented players available.

    Let’s hope for the best.
Enough with the RB/DB nonsense now…

FIX THE TRENCHES, FIX THE BUCS!!

  39. Greg Says:

I’d rather just have Oliver than these two

  40. Phillip Says:

What happens in 2 years when Oliver is more focussed on making the Olympics than becoming the best CB in the league? I’ll take Davis

  41. BushidoEvans Says:

Phillip just a point that INTs aren’t everything. Maybe they just have horrible hands. Doesn’t mean they can’t do their job.

  42. BucEmUp Says:

I could care.less about the interceptions. I’d rather see punts on 4th downs and.incpmete passes consistently over getting burned with a few picks. Gotta fix coaching first though
