Quenton Nelson Invading Tampa

April 5th, 2018

Visiting One Buc Palace.

eye-RAH’s mancrush is in throttle!

Internationally popular JoeBucsFan.com columnist and star podcaster Ira Kaufman has been slobbering over this Quenton Nelson, a guard from Notre Dame, for weeks.

eye-RAH’s dream of Nelson playing for the Bucs is a step closer to reality as Nelson, per WalterFootball.com, is scheduled to visit One Buc Palace for one of the Bucs’ 30 allotted private workouts.

The workouts conclude April 18, per the NFL.

As Joe has stated often, the tea leaves Joe is reading suggest the Bucs will draft Nelson if he is on the board when the Bucs are on the clock. No one is telling Joe this, it’s just the way the stars seem to be aligning.

Hogmollie Nelson ! He would look good in the pewter and scarlet.

  2. Bucsfanman Says:

I don’t know why anyone would have a problem with potentially shoring up the interior of this offensive line for the next 10 years. Anyone with eyes could see that we struggled in running and protecting.
No, a guard doesn’t “move the needle”! However, do you think you’ll win many games without a good offensive line?! Rhetorical question.

  3. SteelStudBuc Says:

Gotta control the clock. Pound the rock. Play action?

  4. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    If he’s there at #7 – U draft’em.

  5. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    I agree…get em at 7…

if not trade down and get a best player available……..screw what our team needs.

  6. Brandon Says:

Picking an OG in the top 10 of any draft is a horrible idea. Guards are not difference makers and they never will be. Sure, Nelson is a fine GUARD-only prospect but you don’t pick him in a spot where you take franchise left tackles where even if the player washes out he can be a right tackle or move to guard. Guards that can’t make it as a guard become unemployed. FYI, the last time a guard was taken top 10… Chance Warmack and Johnathan Cooper… both tremendous BUSTS.

As for Nelson… sure, he’s a good guard. I watched several games of his…including the Miami game where Notre Dame didn’t score the first and only points until a few seconds left in the 3rd quarter. He gave up a couple of pressures, did a good job… but what was his impact in that game? ZERO! Because he’s a guard! You don’t take guards top 10 EVER!

  7. Bucballbaby84 Says:

I just seen a mock draft that had the Bucs passing on Quenton Nelson. I’m sorry but at no point in time do I see the Bucs passing on Barkley, Chubb or Nelson at pick 7. Without a doubt they take one of them if available. You don’t pass on generational talent like those three. Some mocks just make me think to myself ‘how does this person have a job in this field.’

  8. Pickgrin Says:

    Welcome home Quenton! (fingers crossed)

Dude is a beast and we would be lucky to land him.

  9. Sweeptheleg Says:

Lmao the same idiots saying you can’t draft a guard at 7 are the same morons that say you can draft a safety at 7.

    Smh. FSU fans my god.

  10. AlteredEgo Says:

Football come playoff time was/is/will always/ be about running the ball and stopping the run…….Nelson would go along way towards the running the ball half of the puzzle…..and buy time of Jameis throwing the ball and being able to STEP UP into the pocket instead of scramble

  11. NJBucsFan Says:

If he went to FSU he’d be a guard worth drafting at 7

  12. OneBucPerson Says:

Signing Jensen to open up the move back to Guard for Ali, drafting Nelson to take the other Guard spot, as soon as we get an RB look out NFL.

  13. SteveK Says:

Quentin Nelson to the Bucs would be a dream come true. MUCH BETTER than drafting a SS from FSU at 7.

Drafting Nelson would help make our QB and RB and LT better, thus making him a “difference maker”.

  14. Phil Says:

We don’t need to waste a pick on a guard in the first round. We need a cornerback.

  15. Dubcity06 Says:

    Thank you @sweeptheleg !!

Nelson makes the OL top 10 in league for a long time. Improves run, pass, and scoring. And defense stays off field. Team win in trenches and OL talent is worth any pick

  16. Frank Pillow Says:

There’s no question that Nelson would go a long way towards solidifying this OL for years to come. Remember too, injuries happen and you can never have too many good players up front- especially if #3 is our long term investment. That being said, I’d be pretty shocked if he’s still on the board. He could easily go to the Giants at 2, with their GM’s penchant for drafting OL and RB (assuming they don’t trade out), the Browns at 4 (who just lost J. Thomas) and definitely the Colts at 6 (horrible OL)- even with Chubb or Barkley on the board. That’s how high this kid is supposedly grading out.

  17. Bucsfanman Says:

@AlteredEgo- My friend, you just dropped the mic on that one!
TRENCHES! It’s all about the TRENCHES!

  18. Dubcity06 Says:

Team needs a CB yes, and has other picks to get one. Nelson is the option at 7 no matter who is on clock. Best player in draft

  19. Lord Corn Says:

If we draft nelson we can use the Sweezy $$ towards a S or CB after the draft as needed

  20. macabee Says:

Many of my friends here at JBF seemed convinced that OG Quenton Nelson will be there at #7 and the Bucs will rush the card to the podium. There is likely to be draft night fireworks from several teams to trade up and join the scrum for 4 or 5 QBs at the top of the draft. They have seen the outlook for 2019 QB market and it’s bleak.

Several teams (two or three for sure and some you might not expect like the Patriots) have amassed the draft capital thru trades to move up and pay dearly to get their now or never QB of the future. Anybody could be there at #7. What if Nelson and Barkley end up at #7? Or even Chubb and NelsoThen is Nelson still the obvious choice?

If any one or combination of the two are there, there will be lucrative offers for the Bucs to trade down. Given the loss of the 3rd pick and their needs at other positions, can they flat out refuse? This may be a nice problem to have, but one that is not easily decided. Licht is now on the clock with 10 minutes to decide. Feel free to give him your best advice! Go Bucs!

  21. nate_tweetz Says:

If you draft Nelson at 7, the only way I’d be ok with that is if we found a way to get Michel in the 2nd, but then that puts us in quite a bind as far as drafting a quality CB.

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo would prefer Will Hernandez via extra picks…..but Pablo would take Quenton……Pablo is starting to wonder…..Quenton……Evan……Ali……Vinny….Beau……Gerald…..Stevie…..Vernon…..Brent…..and Hason Pierre……Dirk
Pablo says…..WTF…..sounds like a bunch of pu$$y homeboys…….good thing the Bucs have Haboo…..”

  23. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

    Im with Brandon here.

The difference (for just 1 OG spot) between a servicable guard and a top 5 guard really isnt that big, at least not as far as actual game impact.

Now think about the impact of a top 5 player at S, RB, DE, DT, CB will make in comparison to just a serviceable player.

Think, why dont we draft a Fullback in the top 10. What if that fullback is actually the top graded player in the whoooole draft. Just a Beast FB. Sorry but you still do not take him in round 1 because the impact just isnt there, the value isnt there in rd 1.

Same for Guard in the top 10. Value is not worth the pick. Maybe a few picks later like 10-20? But he likely will not last that long anyway

  24. nate_tweetz Says:

If the rumors are true and the Patriots want to trade up to 7, Licht could acquire their two 1st round picks, two 2nd round picks, and end up with 5 picks in the first 2 rounds of the draft. I think I’d be ok with that.

  26. Posey99 Says:

For the people saying it’s a horrible idea to take a guard… you do understand the percentage of first rnd picks that even pan out? What if Nelson is say an 80% chance he’s a top tier guard at a position of need? Versus taking a corner and it’s a 40-50% (or less) chance he’s top tier. I think hitting on your picks is more important than drafting just because it’s a position of greater need.

  27. Pistol Pete Says:

One of the draft guys I follow thinks Nelson could be a Tackle if needed:
STRENGTHS: Prototypical size, trunk and length…heavy-handed with elite play strength to control defenders…bulldozer in the run game, clearing run lanes and
turning defenders from the ballcarrier…quick to punch/reach defenders off the snap…bully mentality to generate push…menacing on the field and competes with a
nasty edge that separates himself (Nelson: “I want to dominate all my opponents and take their will away to play the game and finish them past the whistle.”)…sinks
and stays flat-backed in pass protection…balanced with consistent pad level to mirror…background in taekwondo, which aided his core flexibility and hand
technique…body control and range to climb or pull across the formation, breaking down and eliminating defenders in space…keeps his head on a swivel with
outstanding awareness and timing…constantly searching for work…named a 2017 team captain (Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly: “He holds everybody
accountable, so if somebody’s not doing it the right way, he’s not afraid to tell them.”)…durable three-year starter and plays through pain, finishing his career with 31
consecutive starts – hasn’t played tackle since high school, but his skill-set translates to the edges if needed.

  28. CarolinaBucFan Says:

if all three of Chubb, Nelson, and Barkley were available I think I’d take them in that order. Obviously we need a great DE that can pressure the QBs in our division. But I’d take Nelson over Barkley. It seems easier to plug and play a decent rb behind a great offensive line and find success, than it is to have a great rb succeed behind a mediocre line. Plus the shelf life of a guard has to be waaay longer than a rb with miles already on him.
That being said, I’d do a backflip if we got any of these guys

He’d look better in orange actually. Still doesnt sit well the glazers did away with our orange. N we cant even get a game a year. They need to fix that rule. This nelson guy can ball, for sure. If you go guard then rb tho, you sure arent setting this team up for success this year. The defense is a mess…still. A better mess but a mess. Id love nelson but not over a few defenders who can have a major impact this year

  42. SCBucsFan Says:

He would be the smart not the sexy pick. Then sign Eric Reid.

  43. macabee Says:

CarolinaBucFan, I agree with you assessment. No bad choices here and OG Nelson would make a great Buc. If he is taken I am not looking back!

  44. Brandon Says:

In a two year span, the Bucs had the two highest paid OGs in NFL history, Carl Nicks and then Logan Mankins… how did that help the product on the field? You guys need to stop lying to yourselves about how much you think you know about the NFL and stop believing all the hype on this guy… yeah, NFL teams are built in the trenches… but you don’t need to waste a top 10 pick on an OG… RTs are far more than great OG play and you don’t pick RTs top 10 either. The value is simply not there. You guys ever heard of John Hannah, Mike Kenn, or Steve Hutchinson? HOF caliber guards, by the way, very few in there, much like FBs and punters, because they’er simply not that important. ZERO NFL titles between three of the greatest guards of the Super Bowl era…. John Hannah is considered the greatest offensive guard in NFL history and made the playoffs a grand total of four times in his 13 seasons? How is that possible? Because guards don’t impact the game the way a pass rusher or left tackle does. Hell, the Bucs won a Super Bowl with over-the-hill Randall McDaniel and Kerry Jenkins as their guards. We need competency at guard, not All-Pros, to be successful… and successful teams don’t draft an offensive guard at #7 when they have so many other pressing needs.

BTW, the same things that are being said about Nelson were said about Johnathan Cooper and Chance Warmack a few years ago. If Nelson were THAT good… he’d be playing left tackle, plain and simple.

I challenge anybody to watch the Nelson tape vs Miami this past season and come back and tell me that he can make a major impact for the Buccaneers.

As for people pointing out and saying, the people that say don’t draft a guard are the same ones that say don’t draft a safety… no, I’m the one that said don’t draft Trent Richardson and to take Luke Keuchly over and over and over again before we took Mark Barron.

BTW, there is a reason why OGs are the lowest paid full-time players in the NFL and it isn’t because they’re extremely valuable.

  45. Joe Says:

It’s good to see macabee back!

If there is a more-informed Bucs fan, Joe hasn’t met him. Not a knock on anyone but macabee is a sponge for Bucs news and information.

  46. BucFanFromOhio Says:

    @Brandon

Your point about guards not changing the game is completely invalid when you argue Carl Nicks didn’t help us. No sh!t sherlock he played 2 whole games in 2013 and 7 in 2012. Doesn’t matter what he was paid, if he is hurt and not on the field he obviously isn’t going to help us!

  47. Tony from L.A. Says:

  49. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Brandon

I certainly understand your point but you haven’t completed your thinking.
If you go to any of the sites that take NFL salaries and average them over the years you can quickly see which positions the league values most.

Obviously QB’s make the most..then WR’s and DE’s..then a dropoff and stuck in the middle are the OG’s and DB’s.

By your logic we certainly do not want to pick a DB since they are not considered as valuable.

But where your logic fails is it’s a typical one size fits all. ANY player who is generational at his position…or is Pro Bowl material wipes that logic out.
That by position crap ONLY works if ALL players being compared are equal in terms of their production at their position.

IE…while we all realize that an OG is not going to score, throw passes or sack QB’s…he might help make an average RB a 1,000 yard guy and a QB like #3 All Pro.

There are more than a few draft experts and talent evaluators who believe Nelson is the BEST player available in this draft. Nobody is going to take a guard over a QB I get that…but a freaking safety…C’mon man…and CB’s are not valued much more UNLESS they are one of those dozen guys we call “shutdown” corners. A CB who can take away half the field makes more money that normal CB’s.

I honestly would take Nelson over Barkley because RB’s have shorter careers and they BOTH would improve our running game. While I like Nelson best I certainly would be OK with Chubb if both are available.

  50. Daniel Says:

Logan Mankins (a guard) help make this into a top 5 offense a few years ago.

  51. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @PistolPete

“quick to punch/reach defenders off the snap…bully mentality to generate push…menacing on the field and competes with a
nasty edge that separates himself (Nelson: “I want to dominate all my opponents and take their will away to play the game and finish them past the whistle.”)”

Thanks for sharing that. I’ve been reading other draftniks who are really high on Nelson’s “meanness” quotient.

Thomas Bassinger has a great read this morning in the Times. He believes and I agree that Licht made a statement with his FA’s…and not just that we have loaded up in an attempt to solve our long standing problem with our pass rush and DL. We’ve given up so much passing yardage…so few sacks and so we tend to get distracted that there have been plenty of times when our run defense was totally wimpy and got gashed by opposing teams. Looking at the FA’s that point clearly was not lost on Licht who also beefed up our run defense.

Bassinger points out that there are a lot of “chips on the shoulders” of our new additions. From Jensen to JPP there is a lot for them to prove and they all have an attitude about it. Bassinger thinks one of the goals of Licht was to make this team tougher and meaner.

Maybe that’s why Joe is feeling a Nelson draft pick in our future. He would only add to our nasty factor something this team has needed for quite awhile.

And Brandon give us a break. Carl Nicks played NINE games in TWO years for the Bucs. He is an example of INJURY. That’s the same as saying we can’t pick Barkley because Ki Jana Carter another GREAT PSU RB was drafted #1 in the draft and blew his knee out in his first preseason.

Mankins improved this team and our OL. He was worth the money and the first round pick the Patriots gave up to draft him.

BTW neither Mankins nor Nicks played with each other…Mankins was the fix for Nicks career ending.

Nelson would come in with two other talented and mean guys at Center and Guard…MUCH MORE help than Mankins or Nicks would have received. We have the potential to have the best and meanest three people right in the heart of our offense!

  52. Lord Cornelius Says:

There have definitely been times a big O-line move transformed a team…

Look at Alex Mack when he went to the Falcons for example. Falcons were a 6 win team in 2014 and now Mack has been anchoring a line that has produced one of the more dynamic offenses in the league.

The Saints moved Jimmy Graham for Max Unger and that seemed to work out pretty well.

The Cowboys spent a few premium picks on OG/C to get to their stout line.

The thing with OG NElson is that he’s not just one piece – he’s like the final piece to a nasty interior. We get him and our run game should be very solid even with Barber starting.

The interior pockets will be pretty amazing too for Winston. Win Win WIn

  53. Pickgrin Says:

RE: the argument that Mankins did not “help the product on the field” – and/or that a Guard is never a “difference maker” –

Apparently some need a little Bucs history reminder/lesson…

The Bucs OLine was Horrid before Logan was acquired (2013 was BAAAD folks even with Penn and Zuttah) – but once Mankins arrived and finally got comfortable with the idea that he was not ending his career in NE and came into the next season motivated – the Bucs proceeded then (2015) to have the best offensive production in franchise history! Led by one of the better looking OLines in franchise history which was led by Mankins along with 2 rookies starting from day 1 (one of whom was a D2 guy). We had a rookie starting QB – Doug Martin earning All Pro and Charles Sims looking like the best change of pace back in the league. The Bucs had the 5th best Offense in the league – and that was working within a brand new offensive system – again with a ROOKIE QB and 2 rookies on the OLine.

So what happened to that great and promising offense that started out so strong in 2015? Joe relishes blaming Doug Martin. Many here claim the problem is Dirk’s “playcalling” (SMH). Some even want to blame Jameis Winston for the offensive “troubles” of 2016 and 2017 (SMFH).

But the simple truth as to why the Buccaneers offense has not looked nearly as good nor balanced the last 2 years as it did in 2015 – (despite Winston progressing as expected and adding the best collection of “weapons” in the league) – is because Logan Mankins retired!

    Them’s the facts….

  54. BucFanFromOhio Says:

    Preach

  55. BringBucsBack Says:

Add me to the man crush list!

You guys that are comparing a fullbacks’ value to that of a guards’, need to remember that, a guard is involved in every single offensive play, even on special teams; whereas a fullback is not. A FB is a part-time player, especially in today’s NFL. The position is not commensurate. Therefore, that example is very weak and doesn’t support your position.

  56. Aaron Says:

If 3 QBs are gone and the big 3 are gone – we should be able to trade down with teams fighting for that 4th QB…if not and we have to make a pick at 7. Ouch!! This is where I have to go with the professionals and hope they make the correct choice for our team. I’m personally not excited over any of the Safeties or Corners at this Pick, but what do I know…There are 4 Safeties available as FA.

If 4 QBs are gone – most likely Nelson is still there (maybe Barkley) – I’m taking one of the Big 3 at 7, but I’m still listening for Trade offers. I’m only taking one of the big 3 if I can’t trade out.

    Go Bucs!

  57. uckinator Says:

The offense just needs 2 positions to be a top 10 (maybe 5) unit. A beast on the OL and a RB that doesn’t do a Fred Astaire act trying to find the perfect hole. The offense is very close to playoff caliber.

  58. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Just a mind game with some questions.

Who on the Bucs offense is Pro Bowl or has the potential to be pro bowl?

Jameis…ME..of course but then who? DJAX? Godwin eventually ? OJ?

Now what if we mixed a couple of OL into that mix?

If the strength of our OL is the middle three that helps more than the run…makes a nice pocket for Jameis to step up and let that outside rush blow by him. I just think if you hold the center of your line…that’s a great start.

Think Gettysburg when R E Lee who started off with superior forces lost the battle because Pickett could not break through the Union center. The interior of the line is important.

Trade down if Nelson is sitting on the clock? I’m going to have a tough time with that one……..It has to be a sweet deal.

  72. JimmyJack Says:

For what it’s worth if we do draft Barkley I do not think he will be running behind a soft line. I like the way our Oline looks on paper right now.

But I will add Nelson to that line all day. Barkley or Nelson? Tough call…..But I’ll take Nelson there. Barkley is very close though.

We need to play to our home elements. Having a punishing physical oline with Nelson,Jensen and marpet would be a huge advantage in the Tampa humidity. Add in a nick Chubb or another bruising running back and our offense as a whole will see huge dividends, hell with the clock management alone the domino effect should benefit the whole team

A final thought on comparable position value.

I certainly accept some positions are more valuable than others. But not always.

If the draft went simply by the “overall” value the NFL assigns individual positions over the years by salaries then the draft would be simple and predictable.

It would be all QB’s…then WR’s and DE’s..and then LT’s and then…well you get the picture. Obviously that’s not how the draft goes and so while I get looking at the league averages by position in a search for value…ultimately the draft comes down to two considerations…..BPA or need.

Occasionally you can get lucky and the BPA is also our greatest need. Think Jameis. Mostly though great players come from BPA’s in the 1st and second round…not just Jameis…Mike Evans and others.

He is without a doubt the most technically sound and disciplined offensive lineman I have ever seen. Combine that with the fact that he is 6’5 335 lbs. and was stronger already in high school than most NFL lineman…..well, that equals NFL All Pro, almost guaranteed.

The only thing that will prevent this guy from being probably the best guard in football is maybe getting hit by a bus, beyond that, he will be unbeatable.
