Has Jameis Been “Humbled?”

April 7th, 2018

Just after the NFL Owners Meetings ended 10 days ago, Joe hunted for NFL executives willing to chat in the lobby of the Ritz Carlton Grande Lakes resort.

Thankfully, Joe found a general manager eager to lecture Joe about what humbles a young player.

You’ve already read the GM’s take on long and experienced Penn State cornerback Christian Campbell, who could be a second-round draft pick later this month.

Joe also asked about America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston. The GM responded by saying Jameis is an extraordinary talent but he wondered aloud whether Jameis has been “humbled.” He then proceeded to tell Joe that four major experiences typically will get that job done with a top young NFL player.

Here they are in no particular order:

  1. Extensive losing
  2. Significant injury
  3. Watching your head coach get fired and the player turnover that results
  4. Off-field issue that threatens your career.

The GM noted Jameis has dealt with all of that already so the expectation is that Jameis has matured greatly and should be ready to perform at the peak of his talent level, along with the Bucs’ many weapons.

It was a very interesting take. There was no negativity from the GM, just a different look at why the time is right now for Jameis.

Those all seem like things that will cause a player to lose confidence and erode their faith in their abilities. I like his take better but I’m not sure it is accurate.

  3. Mitch Says:

Lamarcus- there’s a difference between humbled and demoralize.

  4. Pickgrin Says:

Lets not forget that Jameis is going to be a father soon.

That alone has a way of humbling a man. And also of making him more determined than ever to make good decisions in life so as to be the best example possible for your child to follow and be guided by.

Just maybe the personal mental emphasis on being determined to make “good decisions” – that often times come naturally to good men when they have children – will show up the football field as well…

  5. JimmyJack Says:

Winston needs to step up and be a better leader IMO. And it needs to start with his own play. he enters every game and struggles to put up points. He shows all the signs of being a franchise leader…….Hasn’t put it all together yet.

Fans are getting sick of waiting. Time for Winston to grow up and become a veteran

We’ll know soon enough….so far he has said all the right things…and continued to be questionable….repeat the cycle….We’ll know soon enough…..I sure hope he has learned

Plenty of FATHERS in the NFL. Not all are mature.
Being successful at procreating is not a prerequisite for humility and maturity…
My worry is whether Jameis is just an overachieving pretender…?
We’ve seen the likes of that in Tampa all too often.

  9. JimmyJack Says:

Well the Rays have lost 6 straight games to open the season. Will be 7 soon. We just gave up 8 runs in less the 2 innings and our batting order consists of 9 bottom order hitters.

This is going to be a very long offseason.

  10. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Despite what is going on in our nation right now to confuse many of us…humility is a GOOD thing not a negative.

It’s not to be confused with a loss of confidence.

This year sets up nicely. As the Thomas Bassenger wrote recently in the Times…Licht clearly set out to change culture this year. The guys he signed have some large chips on their shoulders.

Jameis does not impress me as someone who gives up. He too has a LOT to prove. Do we believe he’s not smart enough to realize what his situation is for 2018? There is a very broad consensus!!!

And so as far as this team’s motivation this year. Do we think anybody in this organization will sit on their laurels? LMAO They have NO laurels up which to rest.

Do we think they are frustrated…peoed…Coaching and playing for their careers.
Every year we could say NFL coaches and QB’s are playing for their careers but it’s not usually as dramatic or clear as it is with the Bucs.

And so we have a GM with some desperation…we have an HC who is WELL aware of what’s going on…win or go home…same for our DC. We have a lot of players who have something to prove individually as well as a team.

And we have a QB who realizes it’s put up or shutup time!

And so we do not have to worry about motivation. OK flame throwers now you get to post but these guy will probably choke under all that pressure.

I want us to win first and foremost because I’m a Bucs fan…but being on this blog I must confess I hope we win 11 so…Jameis..Koetter…Smitty…GMC..and all the rest can come here and say STFU to all our trolls and haters.

Of course they will not do that…but some of us will be happy to fill in.

This is the first time I’ve ever participated on a sports blog where so many fans root AGAINST the home team.

  11. JimmyJack Says:

St Pete……I read every comment on this page and the last one. Some of them are critical but I don’t see any hate or any trolling or anybody rooting against the Bucs.

In short, I don’t know what the heck your talking about. It sounds like you’re letting a select few posters get into your head.

  12. Pickgrin Says:

Miserable life outlooks lead to consistently negative comments SPBF.

Joe allows it pretty unfettered here so the trolls know where to congregate when they want to spew some crap – trash some of our better players – and toy with a few commenters emotions if they are “on” that day and can get someone(s) to “engage”…. Its all a vain attempt to somehow make themselves feel a little better about life (by putting others down and messing with people’s heads) – which of course never works… Sad… I feel sorry for most of them.

  13. JimmyJack Says:

Pickgrin…..Yes it must be miserable life outlooks. It doesn’t have anything to do with how miserable the team is.

How about we keep it on sports rather then playing shrink with negative posters who still care enough to comment about a team that has sucked for nearly 2 decades.

  16. Ben the GA Buc Says:

All this team needs is a not so miserable defense and a running back and problems will be solved.

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

What is humbling is getting cut and having no team interested……that has got to be a real bummer for someone who loves and makes a living playing football.

They would have already been in the playoffs if not for playing in the NFC south. This is a good division and we are still behind in talent.

  20. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    JJ

Here is a specific fact for you. There is a group here…I do not read you doing it…who are literally rooting for Koetter to fail and get fired…for Jameis to get fired and replaced…for Smitty to get fired…in short they are then literally rooting against the Bucs. First all of these guys ARE Bucs. Secondly and maybe more importantly…in order for Koetter, Smitty, or Jameis to get replaced the Bucs must play poorly this year. Ergo if you’re rooting against Koetter and Smitty and #3’s success you are by definition against the Bucs.

I’m not suggesting that we all become blind sycophants. I absolutely understand the flaws that some people point out…DK’s clock management and play calling,,,,#3’s fumbles and inaccuracy…Smitty’s defense last year.

But if you are rooting for failure in 2018…as in I hope Koetter gets fired…that only happens if we lose!!!

No matter how much I may dislike a coach or player I do not hope we LOSE next year so they’ll lose their jobs.

  21. AlteredEgo Says:

Costa…. the Bucs has NO business in the playoffs last year.. they would have been humbled if not humiliated… we were spared both

    I don’t know St Pete.

I read most of the comments here. Usually at least every other day.

I don’t really see anybody rooting for the team to fail. I see lots of fans predicting failure then being called haters and such(not saying you specifically). Personally I have no problems with anybody predicting failure. That’s the expectations the team has earned.

I also see a lot of fans saying Dirk needs to be fired, or Mike Smith or Winston ect………..I can’t really blame fans for having that opinion either. During the season I thought Dirk should get fired……But I do think it’s kinda irrevelant and a waste of time since the team has decided to move into 2018 with all of them.

I really don’t see hardly any posters openly rooting for us to lose like your saying. Maybe I missed them. But I do see a large number of fans that get upset with other fans for either being too optimistic or pessimistic. I think it’s ridicilous to tell somebody how they should feel about the team. I just don’t see what’s so hard about coming here to talk sports without worrying about how other fans choose to support the team.

It is fun to debate our different opinions and feelings about the team but when people start taking comments personally they are likely the ones that have the problem.

I wanted Dirk fired last year during the season. I do get extremely angry with this team at times, most of the time. I get red faced angry. I’ve broken TVs before because of this team. So I understand when fans are angry. Some people are different and don’t take football as seriously…..and trust me they are better off.

Over the years I have learned…..Now when I get angry at the team I don’t break TVs I boil water so I can do some real damage. By the time it boils I realize it’s not worth it.

So yeah I understand any fan who gets angry. I also don’t expect anybody to break stuff over the Bucs like I do.

  29. JimmyJack Says:

I also let go of all my rage after the season. I get worked up enough during the season. Don’t really need 8 extra months of rage over the team.

Some fans stay upset about the team all year. Can’t blame them but I won’t join them either. I’ll try to find something to look forward too even though I know deep down I am likely to be letdown before October hits.

Again football is a team sport not a quarter back game give him a team like wenz, n golf . When you have a good running back and defense you will win. But if he had that and was wining they every body will get the credit but him , right now wenz, golf, Brady gets all the credit. But there defense is all ways on top. Brady keeps a top 5 or top 10 defense but he gets all the credit. [No, man! — Joe]. So he doesn’t get the passes

  38. JimmyJack Says:

I just think the fan warfare gets in the way of what matters most. How are WE going to stop anybody next year? When are WE going to start defending OUR own turf at Raymond James? Who do WE need to add to the roster that is going to start fighting for a change?

The fan on fan violence is just white noise. It’s a distraction.

JAB83 just pumped me up with his posts!!! I’m dropping the I word. Everything is WE from here out!!!!

  39. SteveK Says:

    Preach JimmyJack!

Fans have a right to be upset about the poor state of the team and lack of playoffs since 2008.

12 years since a 10+ sacker, coming up on 10 years since the playoffs.

    Let’s go Bucs!!

  40. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    JJ

Last season….depending on the time you wanted Koetter fired is totally different. If it was before the season even started that would include you but
if it was in the second half of a losing season I get that. We already had a lost cause so if Koetter was fired after 10 games or at the end of the season it would not have mattered…but again LOOKING FORWARD and hoping he gets fired means you hope Koetter fails.

If the worst happens and we get knocked out of the playoffs beotch away. Doing it before the season even starts…hell before the draft is not just negative it’s not right for a fan.

There is NO way Koetter gets fired unless we turn in a losing season!!!

It’s as simple as that. Connect the dots guys. If you’re rooting for Koetter to get fired you are by definition rooting for 2018 to be a bad season.

BTW JJ I do accept your point that not everyone does this…or even the majority.
It’s definitely a minority but enough to be aggravating. I don’t think they even realize what they are doing. A small minority…very small are the worst. If they’ve posted a negative judgement on Koetter or #3 then they need that failure to back up their opinion.

    The Bucs have a disappointing history…if you wish to wallow in that I understand…but it’s 2018…not 17.

We will NEVER turn it around whining about past failures…we need to suck it up and do our best in 18….I just hope the Buc’s organization and locker room is not think like these posters or it IS a lost cause.

Remember Frank Sinatra’s “High Hopes”. That’s me.

I threw a beer through my TV screen at one point during the playoff game against the Giants… So you’re not the only one.

I get quite mad on Sundays, but I will say over the last 2 or so years I’ve learned to let it go a bit better. No reason to let something which I have no control over, ruin my entire day. (Easier some weeks than others of course)

  44. JimmyJack Says:

    SPBF,

Dirks team played out of sync and unprepared. When we had a chance to get into the race in our first home division game against CAR(week6?)we still were playing at a low level. We got our butts kicked up and down the field that day. It still hurts.

Dirks team needs to play more motivated and confident. Was a good call to keep him as the coach of our young team. New coach mean new rosters and blowing away some of the draft picks and how the team was built.

This roster has a ton more potential they that 5-11 garbage.

  45. JimmyJack Says:

Now if our Glazers could have gotten the Big Tuna to come here then we would of had to dump Dirk

I think we’re probably on the same page. I get passion. I scream at the TV too.

Right now I’m watching the Lightning struggle to beat Carolina and I’m screaming again. LOL

If the Lightning win this contest they win the division and clinch home ice advantage if they lose Boston probably ends up winning. And yet they struggle.

At the end of the day the fact that it’s not scripted…WWE exempted of course…
that’s what makes sports so compelling. The best team in the league can lose to one of the worst and on any given Sunday in the NFL it’s a real crapshoot at times.

BTW while I do not consider WWE a sport I do consider their “actors” to be incredible athletes.

  49. cmurda Says:

There was a time that I was excited by the Lightning this year but they have even fallen off a cliff. Kuch just cost the Lightning the chance at winning in OT. All he did was give up fast breaks all game long. Boston will win East. I guess it’s wish for the Bucs for yet another year

  50. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    cmurda

I’m depressed as well but I certainly do not concede the playoffs…the boys looked great shutting out Boston the other night…this was the second of two back to back games and it was a bit fluky.

Still whenever any team has their fate in their own hands and could win a season title with a win in the final game against an inferior team it’s beyond frustrating.

I suspect Boston fans were less than thrilled to lose to the stinking Florida Panthers the other night either.

Imagine the Bucs get to the final game with the playoffs assured and simply needing a win to win our division and for playoff seeding and are playing Cleveland and still lose. Whew I wouldn’t be coming to JBF until the playoffs start…fans would go nuckin futs.

  51. JimmyJack Says:

I’m struggling this offseason because the Rays are an absolute abomination. They Ishtar lost 135 games this year.

I like the Bolts but I don’t think they got what it takes. If our goalie can be our MVP they the Bolts might make a run.

  52. Mike Johnson Says:

WINNING changes everything. Just ask New England, Philly, J-ville..you need more? Nothing,…,the talk, the rah-rah-rah..means absolutely nothing until the product on the field yields results. 53. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Jameis is strong enough mentally to overcome any reason you give him that he will fail. He’s a winner. If he doesn’t win, it will be his team that let him down.

    Missouri. The “show me” state.

  55. SteveK Says:

  56. Tval Says:

Its AMAZING listening to the culture of losing buc fans around here. Jameis IS the franchise… Period!! Like it or not. Hes NEVER had the same wr corps for 2 straight seasons. How about some continuity? How about having 1, adequate, oline in 5 years of playing college and pro ball?? What did he do?? Thats rhetorical, for a HATE filled subjective sports fan. Ive ACTUALLY heard baker mayfield praised here.. BWAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! NUFF SAID!!!!!

  57. SteveK Says:

    Tval,

It’s time for Jameis to show his status as the #1 overall pick.

I laugh heartily at the FSU sycophants. Already anointing the guy for being average when he’s capable of so much more.

  58. Walter Seidel Says:

Jameis had a hand in the first three…and the fourth one was ALL his.

  59. SteveK Says:

Jameis needs to hit a deep ball this year.
