Best WRs in the NFL?

Man, sometimes Joe thinks he is living in a freaked out world.

Joe can remember once upon a time that the most dangerous weapons on a playoff team for the Bucs were Hurt Emanuel, Reidel Anthony and Jacquez Green.

Man, that was a fearsome trio. The moment the Bucs got a coach who had a clue about offense (Chucky!), those three had their NFL days numbered. (Yes, Joe knows Emanuel was gone before Chucky.)

Fast forward roughly two decades and when it comes to receiver, there is no room at the inn. In fact, types Rivers McCown of Football Outsiders by way of BSPN, pity the fool wide receiver who signs as an undrafted rookie with the squad later this month. Barring an injury or the guy blows up as return man (or is a converted corner), dude has no prayer of making the team.

The Buccaneers are one of the few teams in the league who probably have more pass-catchers than they really need. … Unless a rookie were to immediately supplant [Adam] Humphries in the slot, there is very little room for any other receiver to make an impact in one of the strongest and deepest talent pools in the league.

And no, Joe doesn’t think Humphries (Rudy!) is going anywhere. Now that Chucky Sims appears to be done with the Bucs — he’s still unemployed, much to the angst of prized JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman — Humphries, who signed his new contract this week, returns to the Bucs as having the most YAC (yards after catch) of any Bucs receiver last season.

Two years ago, could you have imagined a time when someone not from Tampa Bay would call the Bucs receivers corps deep and strong?

What a crazy world we live in.

Yea – but DJax is more than likely gone after this year unless he lights it up in 2018 and at this point Hump is on a 1 year deal – so we can’t get too complacent about the WR position being “loaded” as of right now.

  2. BigHogHaynes Says:

Nope not two years ago and sure as hell not now! Please let me explain…a deep group would not Humpries make! D Jax struggled mightily last season…Godwin we hope steps his game way up….I would have put Sims in direct competition with The Hump last season and let that determine who got the contract this season! BIG MIKE is our only real threat at receiver as far as I can see! CONTINUE TO BUILD A WALL ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BAY!!

  3. German Buc Says:

Pickgrin, let’s solve 2019’s problems in 2019 and take care of this year first.

  4. Buc4life Says:

We do have a top 3 WR-TE corp in the league. It’s just up to Dirk to draw the right plays and Jameis to get the ball to them. We have a great mix of WRs that can do damage and I really believe BoBo Wilson is going to be more involved. When you include our TEs we should be nearly unstoppable with any type of running game and some blocking. I am praying that somehow we get Guice, which will be the key to unlock our offense because as much as I like Barber and how much he has achieved, he can not be our work horse.

  5. Bob in Valrico Says:

As much I like Godwin’s abilty to stretch the field and his potential. Hump has ben consistant and dependable. As reliable as he has been, I would be happy to see him stick with the team long term. Hard work should be rewarded.

  6. REdtop5588 Says:

I think they sign hump after this season 3 yr 15mill 10 garenteed hump USA good player I also think we draft a WR in 5th round to keep depth upfor next year with all these big contracts coming up we need to find some starters for cheap to balance it all out GoBUCS

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Hump’s one of my favorite Bucs & Licht would be a fool to let him walk after this season. DJax is gone after this year IMO but we’d then have ME13, Godwin & Hump (plus Cam & OJ) for a pretty fearsome group of receivers. Any NFL QB would die for that group to throw to. Too many other needs this year to be drafting a WR. I’m with Ira on Sims … His skillset is somewhat unique, and pounding him between the Guards wasn’t the best way to use him. Still convinced that he’ll be back in time.

  8. Joeypoppems Says:

Yea outside of a return man it would be tough for an UDFA WR to make the roster.

That doesnt mean we shouldnt bring any in tho.

My thought exactly. Not sure why people look ahead to 2 years from now. The team needs to be focused on practicing tackle football and preparing for week 1.

  10. MarineBucsFan Says:

Agree. I wouldn’t consider the Bucs as an UFA. 4 spots are a lock with Mike, DJax, Godwin, and Humphries then when you look at Bobo and his relationship with Jameis that’s 5!!!

  11. Lou. Says:

Wasn’t it last year (pre-season) that the team was celebrating its deep bench of cornerbacks? And a year or two before the Bucs were overstocked with RBs, WR and TEs? Then the bottom fell out and we saw the real depth. And it stunk.

Let’s develop some real depth. You know, real playoff teams are worried right now about getting a high quality 5th CB or 6th OL, not about drafting a new starter for both positions.

Tells us how far away we really are.

  12. DB55 Says:

And to be honest Bobo Wilson AND Freddie Martino may be wait they are better than Humphries.

Martino has a 18-19 yard per catch avg for the last 2 years if not three, Joe never mentions that and Bobo all he does is catch touchdowns.

I wish we valued talent as much as whatever it is that we value in this town.

I really like Antonio Callaway from Florida. I believe this kid has 1st round talent but because he was suspended last year has fallen WAAAAY down the board. If by some miracle he was sitting there in the 5th, I would love to have him. Maybe if we load up on picks earlier we could grab him in the 4th even.

  14. Reality_43 Says:

And I really agree with Bobo WIlson being really capable of putting up good numbers. I mean the more involved we get ALL our receivers, the more trade capital we have next year when we need CBs still.

  15. SB Says:

@Reality_43……..That is IF the kid can straighten up. Kid is a headcase

  16. DB55 Says:

Real talk, let’s focus less on personalities and more on results. This team gets held back bc this town is so concerned about proper etiquette. Fck etiquette, this is football not golf. Ijs

  17. Canadianbucsfan Says:

They should bring Simms back and let him compete in camp. He’s a decent 3rd down back, I would prefer him over quizz

  18. Bobby M. Says:

We could easily get rid of Humphries and let D-Jax take those quick screens with Godwin on the outside. If Humphries is getting that kind of yardage, imagine what D-Jax would do.

Winston has more options at WR then he’ll ever need. Our offense would look much better if our 0-line were as talented/deep as our WR/TE group. The Eagles and Pats just traded off or let go of multiple role players…..yet we hoard talent on our bench while we sit in the basement of the NFC for a decade.

    I agree…..move djax to the slot….godwin outside….hump is great depth…..throw him a bone or 2 in the games…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  20. Rrsrq Says:

    Yeah,

If they draft a Ronald Jones or Nyheim Hines, that is another pass catching weapon – add Barkley, Penny and Michel to that list to as they will be used, offense on 🔥

  21. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    DB55

Not sure but I almost agree about Bobo. He has the talent to be better than Hump but he seems a little erratic. Once he can put his considerable skills to work he can either move up our depth chart or we can showcase him for a decent trade…or Hump.

We have another great advantage. This piece is talking WR’s but if you think in terms of targets..weapons for #3…I don’t think any NFL team is better off than us. Brate has proven himself and now OJ has done the same. These two guys are also hungry for the ball.

This is an area I’m really anxious to watch Jameis work. He is such a team guy he’ll have to be a great point guard this to distribute ONE football among so many targets. And what if we get a decent running game going which will cut down on #3’s throws. This year is going to be very interesting.

  22. jmarkbuc Says:

These guys can only be as good as the guy throwing them the ball

  23. OneBucPerson Says:

We need to put DJax in the slot, that way we can get Mike and Chris together on the field full time.

  24. I Bleed Pewter and Red Says:

Desean Jackson, Mike Evans, Adam Humphries, Chris Godwin, Cameron Brate, OJ Howard. Yeah they’re stacked and there should be no excuses. Winston has many weapons so it’s time to elevate his game to take advantage of all this talent.
