Derwin James Love

April 22nd, 2018

Does the talent match the hype?

This one is a bit lost on Joe.

Joe understands a lot of folks are huge Derwin James fans, the safety from Florida State.

Joe is not against James in any way, not against the Bucs drafting him, though a safety at No. 7 seems a reach.

James seems to have a great attitude. Joe heard him on Pro Football Talk on NBC Sports Network last week and he sure seems to love the Bucs (he said John Lynch and Derrick Brooks and Warren Sapp are his boyhood heroes).

What’s not to like about that?

And no, Joe doesn’t give a whip about James not working out for the Bucs. That’s all he needs to do; blow out his knee (again) a week before the draft for some mindless 40-yard dash. It’s not like teams don’t have ample data on James already.

But to hear some go on and on about James, it is as if he is a one-man wrecking crew at safety. That the guy can be sort of a combination of Lawrence Taylor or Troy Polamalu or Von Miller all rolled into one.

If that was the case, why wasn’t he in college?

Florida State’s defense was turrible. Granted, their defensive coordinator was totally inept, Joe will give you that. Perhaps he didn’t know how to use James?

And if that is the case, do we trust the same guy who didn’t know better than to put Brent Grimes on Julio Jones instead of Ryan Smith to use James in exotic defenses to maximize his talents? That is a very big leap in faith.

And yeah, James still could have been hampered by his knee surgery from the previous year. Joe understands that.

It just concerns Joe the way folks are hyping James, yet Joe did not see this same player at Florida State last year. Is he the transcendent talent some make him out to be? What is Joe missing here?

At any rate, NFL draft guru Josh Norris of Rotoworld.com cut a video where he explains how James is the right man for the Bucs.

I’m feeling real tight right now. Been a loyal reader since 2010 with sporadic comments In between. Because of this when I do post it means something to me. And when people respond to me, they say @Marine or @MarineBuc. Now I know I’m not the only Marine reader on this here site, it’s grown well since 2010 so I’m certain there are plenty. But I was here first and claimed that specific tag, so it’s mine.

So when I see someone post as MarineBuc I feel some type of way. I’ve commented after a few of your posts so I know you’ve seen it by now. And what makes me even more pissed is that we don’t even share the same views. I mean seriously, who the fuk think the Bucs going to draft a QB at pick 7? Especially when we already have a franchise QB and a damn good one at that. You are a troll and you have no respect.

I’m a little disappointed Joe, I thought you would have my back on this when you saw me asking this clown to change his name and after we saw him have complete disregard and continue to use it.

I mean seriously, what if I started using the name DB55 and begin declaring my love for the “ice cream man” or NOSBOS and said hey I think the Gators gonna be a force this year or even JOE and said how I think the Bucs are going to do great developing whatever cornerback they draft and specifically if they draft one at 7??? I didn’t think it was too much to ask, most of you would likely feel the same way.

Anyway, I just wanted to vent a little before I said that I’m just going to change my name to a great suggestion Bucsfanman provided….Jarhead!

I’m Jarhead now, so go fuk yourself MarineBuc Troll ass punk!!!

  2. AlteredEgo Says:

I don’t buy into positional “too high”….with 1st round picks any player that can step in and contribute at a high level with expectation of a successful NFL career…take them….on the flip side of the notion….there is no guarantee a positional player that is “OK” to take high will work out…in the Bucs case 2018 draft DB is an area of weakness and with 3 or 4 QB’s taken in the first 6 picks the Bucs at 7 have the whole table to pick from ….I would be OK with a corner and safety taken with the first 2 picks in either order….then a veteran FA RB after the draft…got close the back door of the defense

  3. mark2001 Says:

If we were between ten and twenty, it might be a great pick….let’s say in a trade down scenario in the first round. But don’t think so at 7.

  4. Jarhead Says:

    So now to the topic.

I like Derwin James and would be happy to have him even at 7. But if we did take him I’d prefer it was in a trade down scenario. Hoping for Nelson at 7 to continue and complete the overhaul in the trenches.

  5. AlteredEgo Says:

MBF….so you are the only Marine ….Bwhahahahahahahahaaa……really….SMH

  6. Hodad Says:

Mark it down, Josh Rosen will be the Giants pick meaning four Q.B.’s will go before we pick giving us a shot at the top 3, Barkley, Chubb, Nelson. The Giants won’t be picking this high next year, and it’s a weak Q.B. class, this is the time for Eli’s replacement. A Jewish Q.B. would fit in perfect with the N.Y. fan base, I’m telling you it’s a done deal. Barkley will slip to us, because all the teams above us will be able to get their R.B. at the top of the second round. You don’t take a R.B. that high with the second pick if you’re the Giants with an aging high paid Q.B. who ahsn’t won much lately. The Browns might snag him, but not if it means passing on Chubb. Rosen to the G Men, Barkley falls from heaven to the Bucs, book it!

  7. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Well this proves it. Alterego simply cannot read.

  8. Jarhead Says:

    AlteredEgo,

Brother… Please read the whole post if you are going to comment on it. I said I know I’m not the only Marine but I did claim that specific tag.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Where is “Joe would rather draft a punter”?

  10. BucHead5588 Says:

Good stuff Jarhead I agree with you anyway I want Nelson at 7 but if he’s not there I wouldn’t mind James minkah or Ward we need help in our secondary o yah that’s assuming Chubb An Barkley are not there at 7 or Nelson

  11. Kobe Faker Says:

The 2notjoes and the buc sheeps dont realise and understand why draft safety when they drafted justin evans in the 2nd round…

Its because licht and smitty knows justin evans cant start because he suks and CANT TACKLE….HE IS A LIABILITY…

THATS WHY WE NEED A SAFETY THAT CAN TACKLE

  12. Bucs Guy Says:

Starting to feel like the nightmare situation might be coming for the Bucs. No big 3 available and nobody to trade back with. Forced to pick someone at 7 who isn’t worth a top 10 pick. Outside of QBs and the big 3, the only other players worth a top 10 are LBs. IMO there is nobody in the secondary worth a top 10 this year. Lots of 10-20s in the secondary. The only maybe I see as a top 10 is Vea.

Hope I’m wrong and the Bucs trade down or get the last of the big 3. I highly doubt there will be 2 of the big 3 to choose from and under no conditions should the Bucs trade up.

  13. JabooBuc Says:

Admittedly, James is a bit of a leap of faith so i understand some reservations about him. Especially at 7. As a Freshman he was a starter and played extremely well (5 * recruit). He then hurt the knee early in his Sophomore year but had been playing well prior to the injury.

Last year, i thought he played well but played on a team with a lot of issues. The offense was horrible after the Bama game which led to the defense being on the field an awful lot. As mentioned, Kelly was just bad as DC and it became very clear to FSU fans, that Jimbo had given up on this team from the beginning.

None of that is meant to be an excuse. His stats at the combine show he is an athletic freak. I think, if i had to critical of his play this last year, he tried to do too much to overcompensate for a bad team performance. Kelly had him playing all over the field so it was hard to grade him out as a SS.

End of the day, i think you need players like him on defense. Great tackler, long and strong at the point and can run. We have a need at that position and he is a starter day 1.

I would take him at 7 but totally understand the reservations.

  14. Big Country Says:

We are high on him for the same reason everyone is high on Nick Chubb. He is a rare talent and if not for his knee he would be talked even higher. He is very much a Jalen Ramsey cloan but more. James got better and better as the year progressed but like ya said the rest of the defense went to crap which everyone knows was because of bad coaching. The whole team fell apart which is why I’m happy Jimbo and staff are gone.

  15. WutdaBucisthis Says:

    @daREAL MarineBuc…aka Jarhead.
I’m behind you 100. I also don’t post a a lot…lol more than you though. I’ve seen these guys use other people’s name, mine included. I called them out also.
Btw…thanks for your service sir…i salute you…C’mon Joe

  16. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

“This one is a bit lost on Joe.”

    That makes two of us.

  17. FLBoyInDallas Says:

You build the lines first. Period. Should’ve drafted Floyd or Rankins year before last. Not Hargreaves. Instead of Aguayo they could’ve had Ngakoue, the DE drafted by the Jags. The list goes on. When will these guys learn? You don’t build from the back end. You build from the trenches. It gets old hearing the same old sad story year after year.

  18. Jarhead Says:

Appreciate that WatdaBucisthis 17 years of honorable and faithful service, 3 more years and I’m out! I love what I do tho, real talk.

But that’s the thing though I don’t post much, so at first I wasn’t even tripping. So I politely said yo, this my tag please choose another name.

  19. JabooBuc Says:

FLBoyInDallas: um, they have made significant investments to both lines this off season. There are other positions of need.

  20. Jarhead Says:

I’m moving to Tampa or at least close so I can be a season ticket holder. Can’t wait!!!

  21. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Marine Buc aka jarhead_buc

Where do you get off thinking you own “marine” just because you have been here????? I have been here since 2008 and do you know how many fake “realist” have come and gone!!!!!! I have not seen something so ridiculous since “Tiny Tim” went multiple-personality disorder”!!!!!!!!

Here is a tip, don’t worry about you handle and post better!!!!!!!!!!!

Now back to the “real” matters of the article!!!!!! Some sheep want another safety because he played at a school!!!!!!! They want to have a 1 and a 2nd rounder at safety???????? That is some “high cotton”!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How about for once we load up on the D-line, and just piece together the secondary as best we can!!!!!!!!!! The sheep and so-called fans keep saying that they want to be the Jags and Eagles, but when it comes time to load up the D-line, they think that a few cast-offs and free-agents will do the trick!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Buccaneer scotty Says:

    Pass on James at 7!

  23. El_Buc941 Says:

Joe exactly how many other teams did Derwin decline to workout for other than Tampa?

  24. ContePiscateli Says:

The thought of certain positions being a reach early in the draft leads me to ask this question. It seems this is leads teams to draft a player in the top 10 because of his position rather than his talent, if this is true, does that explain the many top 10 busts? Is reaching for a certain without the matching talent more of a reach than the very talented player at an undervalued position? Give me the player who is less likely to be a bust please.

  25. The Buc Realist Says:

Funny How Joe defends DS76 up and down that he can only play on one side, But when BG24 does the same thing, Joe blames the defensive coordinator for the same thing!!!!!!!!

    Favoritism indeed!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!

  26. JabooBuc Says:

Joe, you should do a story about these private workouts. If I were a prospect and went to the combine, that would be it. Maybe a pro day at my school. But, as you accurately stated, these teams should have plenty of data on a prospects athletic prowess.

Why would any prospect want to put themselves at any additional risk because some team hasn’t done their homework or is feeling insecure?

  27. Bobby M. Says:

We WILL get either Nelson/Chubb/Barkley OR someone will be trading up to snag a remaining QB. Odds are OL and RB get addressed first if we have a trade partner to move down

  28. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Wow, just wow! Never thought I would see that kind of narcissism and pettiness from a Marine. Thank you for your service though.

FWIW, James is just getting hype from the FSU homers. If you compare the film between him and Fitz it isnt even close! Fitz is electric on the field and James is just solid.

  29. Jarhead Says:

    The Buc Realist,

How could u be so simple minded. It’s not rocket science, it’s a name tag that identifies a single person. It can get confusing if multiple people start commenting on a topic and two people using the same name.

I realize it’s a common term because it represents an organization in which I’m apart of and I’m fully aware I’m not the only one. It is what it is, I changed it because I think it’s important that when u comment people can identify with who you are based from previous comments.

And the “post better” remark??? No comment

  30. OneBuc55 Says:

Touchdown Tampa, if Derwin James had played at Bama there’s no doubt in my mind he’d be in the conversation for top 5…Unfortunately James played for an under-welming Seminole defense under an pretty bad DC in Charles Kelly…Had Bama gotten their hands on James his highlight reel would have been 10 times more impressive than it already is…Alot of defenders look amazing in the defensive system only to fizzle out in the NFL…

I’m a FSU lifer, James is my personal favorite player in this draft class…that being said, if we have to decide between James, Fitzpatrick, and Nelson; the pick has to be Nelson…If that scenario plays out I’d be estatic…however, unlike the concensus I don’t feel we need to take a RB in the 2nd rd…I feel we must address our secondary at some point in the 1st 2 rounds…RB’s come a dime a dozen; we can wait till the 4th round to take one or trade back up into the 3rd round and get one…if we have Marpet, Jensen, and Nelson in the interior of our Oline we can get by with Barber, Sims, and a 3rd or 4th Rd RB…just my 2 cents…

  31. darin Says:

    Marinebucfan
Nice rant, loved it. Dont let someone else change you. Should stick with other name.
And Joe, I agree totally with James and bucs coaches comment. I heard the noles fan saying same thing. I came back with the same thing as you. Someone went on n on about the inept fsu coaching staff and I said “you just summed up the defensive coaching staff of the bucs last year too”. Until I see smitty come up with better adjustments I’m just not gona believe it. Only way his deal works is pressure pressure pressure. Keep getting linemen with the higher picks.

  32. SteelStudBuc Says:

Just watching the highlight packages… Fitzpatrick is better than James in my opinion. James is not a 7 overall pick. This has Mark Barron written all over it.

  33. Ndog Says:

On the topic any segment on the Bucs where they can’t even get our logo correct I take with a grain of salt. SMH

  34. Horse Liver Says:

No please no please no no NOOOOOOO. Not at number 7.

If Big 3 are not there trade back because one of the QBs will be there for a QB starved team.

  35. GreG Says:

If Barkley and Nelson are gone at 7 I’d be thrilled with James. We need secondary talent period

  36. Joe Says:

    MarineBucsFan:

Please e-mail the comment in question to Joe. joe@joebucsfan.com.

Thanks. Will take care of it

  37. AlteredEgo Says:

    LOL…trade back !…if “THE Big 3” are gone…..
    human nature is so amusing….
if the Bucs were picking at 12 this year folks would be tripping all over themselves to “trade up” to 7 for such and such player….LOL…..

3 or 4 QB will be taken before the Buc’s pick…..Bucs don’t need a QB…..that leaves a great pick for the Bucs

  38. Andrew Says:

You won’t find players that are a mismatch with Derwin the way Vernon looks outmatched against the Julio’s of the world.

That defensive coordinator was complete trash. Any Fsu fan will back that up.

Derwin got better as the year went on playing on the knee. Much better. And his freshman year + beginning of sophomore year was dominant. Ole miss game in Orlando Derwin changed that game in the second half. 1st game of soph year. Big interception covering a first round draft pick playing outside corner. Pick him and be happy.

  39. Joe Says:

If I were a prospect and went to the combine, that would be it.

    Agree!

  40. Joeypoppems Says:

Questioning Derwin James’ talents because the team he played on wasnt good isn’t fair. That same argument could be made for almost every prospect.

If Saquon Barkley is a “generational” RB, why was Penn State ranked 59th in rushing offense?

If Bradley Chubb is the best pass rusher in this draft, why was NC State 44th in total sacks?

It isnt fair to question talent based on the team they were on.

  41. Wausa Says:

joe keeps spewing the same ignorant drivel about Derwin James.

Using his logic the Bucs should cut Gerald McCoy, Kown Alexander and Brent Grimes, because the Bucs defense had the worst defense in the NFL last year.

When Jalen Ramsey and Derwin James were both on the same defense I think Derwin was the better player.

Derwin James was the highest graded safety in college football last year per Pro Football Focus.

    NFL Scout Regarding Derwin James:
“He has the body frame of Patrick Peterson and has the potential to become one of the best strong safeties in the NFL. James also has the athleticism and man coverage skills to play outside cornerback at the next level.”

  42. NOSBOS Says:

MarineBuc what’s good bro,You can’t be serious man. Folks still jackin tags round here??? Whoever you are when I see you I’m at yo @$$.

  43. passthebuc Says:

The game is build the trenches first.

You never put the penthouse on the first floor. It comes last and should be the

    “cou’de gra”

  44. John meeks Says:

I just didn’t see the same player after his injury,I’m sure he probably is 100%by now though.i just feel minkah is a more versatile player and also with better hands.i believe minkah is a better big play guy also.

  45. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    @NOSBOS

When do you plan on sending me that hunnit dolla$ you owe me?

  46. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Jarhead/MarineBuc

I’ve only had that happen to me once. Not sure if someone was trying to impersonate me or is just a Buc fan from St. Pete.

I certainly understand your consternation but I don’t really worry about it too much. Regulars here have a writing style and a set of football “beliefs” and most of us get to know them. If someone starts using the wrong “Realist” I can tell…if someone sad they were Rodd Munch I would know besides the extra letter d in the first name.

BTW to anybody who knows…are our screen names not tied to the email we provide? I only post on one other blog and the only way people can impersonate is to change a letter or add a space.

  47. Jarhead Says:

@NOSBOS what’s good bro. I tried to hit you up! I was in Orlando (Carver Shores) last weekend.

  48. John meeks Says:

Marinebucsfan, wow you woke up on the wrong side of the bed! I can’t believe joe even put your comment on here.you that upset over your user name?let me say to you that you aren’t the only marine sir!calm down my friend and thank you for your service!

  49. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Joey

Exactly!!! Nice post with actual examples. I love when people take the time to illustrate their points.

Another way draft picks slip or move up is depending on their use. IE an RB who used as a bell cow runner and gets very few balls tossed his way. Now if his team has several really good WR’s/TE’s the back may disappear from the passing game. Then people tend to assume he’s one dimensional or can’t catch. You can’t catch what is thrown to you.

How he was used IMHO is what has some people overlooking Barkley. He was a major target in PSU’s passing game over 50 catches with an 11.1 average per catch. Everyone of those catches was a play he didn’t get to run from the line of scrimmage. There is only ONE football and so many snaps. Barkley’s running stats SHOULD be less than other backs who didn’t really get any of their running attempts folded into the passing game.

  50. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Oops…can’t catch balls NOT thrown to you.

  51. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Marine Buc aka jarhead_buc

“It’s not rocket science, it’s a name tag”

Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now just pick a name that no one will come close to like ” “Marine Buc aka Jarhead that is moving to Tampa” No one will want to type that bad boy out!!!!!! Now stop your whining and packs some boxes soldier!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and don’t ask what time it is cause I just told you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  52. webster Says:

    @ realist

What are you talking about? Posters jacking names is not cool. I remember the tiny tim fiasco. That was not cool. The original tiny tim was a good poster and the fake tim was simply a troll. Tim left this site because of it. Its good to see joe requested marine to send him an email. Looks like he has a way to fix the issue now. By no means do i subscribe to posters jacking names.

  53. webster Says:

For all you posters jumping on marinebuc and laughing at him by saying he is not the only marine are surely missing the point. Its not about being the only marine. Its about being the 1st marinebuc on THIS site which means he should be the 1st and only marinebuc on THIS site. Its really simple. There should not be 2 marinebuc on THIS site period.

  54. Jarhead Says:

    Exactly!! Thanks Webster

  55. BucFamous Says:

Gotta love it when Joe answers his own question and then ignores the answer.

Q: Why was the defense terrible?
A: “Because the Defensive Coordinator was completely inept.”

BTW, while FSU’s defense wasn’t great, they were still ranked #18, which is better than Florida at #31 and Miami at #38!

  56. Alpha Buc fan Says:

Thanks to all who serve our country an put their lives on the line for ours god bless you all an the ones who don’t serve to lol

  57. The Buc Realist Says:

    https://www.joebucsfan.com/2018/04/dont-think-one-player-away-anything/

    The Elder Council has spoken!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!

  58. BigboybucfanDD Says:

Love this guy. Go get him. Fits the new attitude schemed. I’m gonna go ahead and say it, ” Bucs make the post season this year ” if they draft Chubb as RB in round two and grab Fitzpatrick or James in round 1. We don’t need Barkley or Nelson (not saying I would pass on either if available at 7) but I most definitely wouldn’t trade up for them. We already reached the turning point and all the fans have our GM to thank for it. The difference maker isn’t any one single person, it’s the new collective attitude. Bringing in the “nasty” attitude was the best thing that’s happened to the Bucs in the last 10 years. Mark my words, “it’s contagious and it’s spreading through the locker room like a wild fire and will continue to do so until the entire team is burning bright.” Even the average players will look like all pros this year. Winston will get “nasty” , both lines will get “nasty” , heck even VH will be “nasty” this year. There’s a new attitude in Tampa and attitude “IS” contagious. So remember this day and what I said on this day when the Bucs win the division.

  59. AlteredEgo Says:

hmmm….it is perfectly clear there is nothing we can’t bicker about…..crying over a screen name….IAMAVNVET

  60. DanBucsFan Says:

That some bullskit that names are stolen. Especially from a MARINE who should command respect from all, and If u disagree about respecting any military officer, YOUR A PUNK AND A DISCRACE. Also, I respect how eloquently THE REAL MARINE BUC stated his comment. Thank you Jarhead for your service and we all sleep good at night due to people like you! One thing id suggest, but you already solved the issue. Maybe try MarineJoe, or MarineDan, etc whatever your name followed by Marine. Either way I wanted to not only thank you but commend you .
Now on James topic. He is not only a great athlete but LEADER as well. Tough Kwon type of leader. Last year wheels fell of for FSU after Alabama game. James coming back from injury needed lil time and he got that, now he will ball out in NFL. I am all for Nrlson at 7 but James IMO is the best consolation prize if we stay put and big 3 are off board. Go Bus !!!

  61. Not there yet Says:

If a guy turns out to be an impact player for this defense do you really think it wouldn’t make a difference because he’s a safety? Not sure where the football knowledge comes from sometimes on this site. Don’t know where people get the idea that a certain position can’t be drafted in the top ten.

so you would take a lesser player at 7 because that’s where their positions should be drafted? No GM says we can’t take a talented guy at 7 because he’s a safety, that’s a stupid logic and if you’re going to write article like this you have to have a better argument than he can’t be taken because he’s a safety. They could take Ward or Fitzpatrick but not James, that makes no sense.

  62. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Dan

Calm down. Presumable if we give folks the benefit of the doubt…the guy who “stole” the name was also a Marine who deserves our respect for his service to country.

There is the possibility that the last Marine in had not read the blog enough to realize MarineBuc was here first.

Bottom line for me is I respect MarineBuc/Jarheads consternation but I don’t necessarily assign nefarious motivation to the guy who did it. He literally may have not even known he was doing it…especially if he was new.

The ONLY names that I think could be potentially stolen on purpose would be TMAX or Realist or the guys who take strong sometimes controversial positions.

Some of us are sensitive and do not like being called sheep. LMAO

    As for me…..baaaaabaaaa

  63. DanBucsFan Says:

    STPETE

Good point brother, it in fact more than likely was just that, a honest mistake by anothe marine who is a Bucs fan. I try to keep things on topic here and TRY not to bash others for their opinions, although sometimes it’s hard lol , especially when some “fans” seem to be so fed up with Bucs that they are almost borderline Bucs fans. But I respectfully agree with you and am clam now lol.

  64. webster Says:

    @ realist

I am only taking marinebuc’s side because he said he asked a poster to change his name because they were the same. You brought up the tiny tim situation as if its no big deal to have posters with the same name. The Tim’s names were exactly the same ie capital letters with polar opposite views because one was a troll. My point is brushing off name jacking isnt cool and jacking names isnt cool period. Not sure why this is so hard to understand. Im sure you wouldnt want to see someone post as “The Bucs Realist”. Its not the same because i put a “S” at the end of buc.

  65. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @AlteredEgo

    “IAMAVNVET”

Me too brother. No hero though…in the real lines at Bien Hoa. To this day I feel guilty when I go to the “Black Wall” in DC because I had it easy compared to my brothers who were ground pounders.

BTW this mean we have something else in common…you must be getting pretty old by now. LOL

And of course we share that commonality of being Buc fans.

Any other Viet Vets out there?

  66. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Sorry…wish we had an edit or review but I was in the rear lines not the real lines.
I never had to hump the jungle

  67. feelthepewterpower Says:

Questions about his tackling, taking improper pursuit angles, inconsistent level of play, slower to react at free safety….coming off knee surgery. See samuel gold’s analysis of james on youtube that shows the above concerns. Id rather have Fitz And I am an FSU fan. Fitz will likely be an elite free safety that can anchor the backend of our defense for many years.

  68. BigboybucfanDD Says:

    @StPeteBucsFan

Not a vn vet but I was in Iraq for 3 years. Our breed aren’t quite as bad @$$ as you guys were but we did what we did for the same reasons. Don’t feel bad brother you still did your part.

Mush respect to all who have served.

StPete…I was in the rear too..and share you “guilt”…I did see incoming from Dustoff at the ER ..I was a medic that went in country with 9 others..5 to the bush and 5 to hospitals/aid stations…it is all with me everyday

So take fitz and play with two 200 pound free safeties at both safety positions? And no corners over 5’ 10…

I can see the two headed monsters for the saints/falcons running all over us for years to come.

  72. Pickgrin Says:

I’m sure the Chiefs are still pissed at themselves for taking Eric Berry #5 overall eight years ago…

James is that type of prospect. Same type of athlete – their 40 times are the same (4.47)- impressive vert and long jump #s very similar – yet James is Bigger and Stronger than Berry. Packs more of a ‘wallop’ when he gets a clean shot.

Derwin James will live in the backfield on running plays along with Kwon and LD54 if these new run stuffer DL players we acquired can do their job. James can also cover TEs and RBs like a blanket. The TE slant over the middle play that has killed this defense for what seems like years now would no longer be available. Greg Olson would be cursing the Bucs for drafting Derwin – LOL.

Oh – and James can BLITZ quite well too – so he also helps our pass rush when his # is called to do so.

I”m a derwin James fan too!! I would love to take him at #7. If Chubb & Nelson are gone we have to take the BPA. I still would love to take Vita Vea too. We haven’t taken a DT in the first round sinces McCoy. He can change a defense and run it in on offense. The man is is FREAK !!!

“though a safety at No. 7 seems a reach.”

    Let’s define “reach” for Joe.

A reach is when you draft a player whose value is significantly lower than the spot where you pick him, usually because of need or because you’ve overvalued the player because of combine numbers… Something like that.

It’s never a reach when you draft a guy whose value is right in line with the position where you draft. In most of the mock drafts I’ve seen lately, this is right about the spot where James seems to be valued. After the top 3 non-QBs, James, Ward, Roquan Smith, and Tremaine Edmunds are right there.

It’s different to say they shouldn’t be drafting a safety at that position because you don’t wanna draft a safety. It’s something else, but it’s not a reach.

  82. Crabberbill Says:

FItzpatrick and Barkley aren’t worth the #7 pick. We can get a RB in round 2. We need to build the trenches and start with defense !! Fitzpatrick is a slot cornerback at best. James is big and can even plat outside cornerback but would be awesome at strong safety I say if Nelson and Chubb are gone It’s a toss up between James and Vita Vea!!! Build the trenches!!!.

    Don’t believe the hype @feelthepewterpower

Every rookie coming out of college has holes in their game and there are no can’t miss prospects or for as long as Cleveland has picked in the top ten they would have a Superbowl roster. Boys to men reference, they all have to adjust to the speed and intelligence of everyone on the field. Barkley and Nelson played Temple and Kent State, just how many NFL players are on those two rosters combined even including udfa’s? Probably 5 at the most?

Long term is the goal so hope we get a guy that will eventually have probowl impact, McCoy is the only one doing it consistently in a buc uniform

  84. gambelero Says:

You’ve been reading the comments, Joe, which I mean as a complement.

I’ve said repeatedly here that James is not a Mike Smith DB. He’ll freelance and make huge, Sports Center highlight plays, but doing his job within Smith’s system, no. People have us taking him at 7 instead of Barkley or Nelson, which is totally crazy. I love James at 12-15 (Buffalo and Arizona tradedowns, respectively), but 7, no way.

If you add the numbers up, it’s big Three (deification caps) or a QB tradedown. James will go 12-16 if we don’t take him. All but one of Miami, Washington, Buffalo, New Orleans, San Diego, New England and Arizona will still be there and every spot is potentially the last dance. Whoever is left, I still think Allen, but if you listen to the smokescreen, it’ll be Rosen, will be the apple of a few of those teams’ eyes.

Sure, every player has holes in their game, but the ones James has are not desirable traits. Like with Barkley, his perceived hole is that he dances too much in the backfield and takes too many negative runs. That can be corrected, and a lot of the negative runs were as a result of a porous PSU offensive line with Barkley trying his best to recover. Nelson’s perceived hole is speed to get to the second level in zone blocking, but Nelson does an adequate enough job to where it might not be his strong suit, but he can be OK at it if called upon.

But the holes Gold points out on James in his analysis are bad flaws, bad fundamentals, and bad motor. I get that James is a great athlete, but we need football players. Minkah Fitz is a fine football player in the end. Not sure James will transform our secondary the way Fitz would….but that’s for the Buccs to decide.

    @Feelthepewterpower

If Barkley’s negative runs were because of a poor OL, how many teams in the top 5 picks have a good OL? I mean if he couldnt overcome poor OL play against college defenses, what will happen if he plays behind a poor OL in the NFL?

There are questions around Barkley’s game that wont be able to be answered until he actually plays in the NFL. Dont understand why so many people want him measured for a gold jacket already.

Gotta be fair. The nitwit that traded away Barron couldn’t figure out how to use him. It speaks volumes a guy like Jeff Fisher knew how to use Barron but not the clown who saw him every day in practice.

Lovie set this team back damned near five years. Between him and Schiano running off good players, no wonder the Bucs have turned into Cleveland South. How many quality starters did those two throw overboard, seven, eight, nine? Good grief!

  92. Jeffbuc Says:

I like how people say if the big three are gone there is no one else worthy of the 7th pick. So what do all the teams do after us. We should give up and not draft anyone because they are not worthy to be drafted that high. Someone drafts 7,8,9 and 10 every year. I never understand the he is a good pick at 12 but at 7 that is to high. If he is drafted at 12 and does good or at 7 does it matter. If he is a bust at 7 or 12 it’s still a bust. So how do teams drafting at the end of the round acquire starters. If they are all gone at 6. Just nonsense

  93. Jason Mclaurin Says:

We need to stop hoping for the big three and accept James as the pick at #7. I’ve given up on trading down in the draft and accepted we are stuck at seven. The big three will go as this: Giants: DE Bradley Chubb, Browns: OG Quentin Nelson, Colts: RB Saquon Barkley. That will be how it goes based on how this offseason has gone. There’s nothing wrong with taking James at #7. He fits all of our needs in the secondary and he would bring immediate results our pass defense. I’m not even thinking about the injury at FSU because his whole time there was controversial from the injury to the coaching change, but he will be good to go for the Bucs and we have quality backups to switch him in and out or let him start on the bench for a few weeks. The worst decision this organization can make is not drafting Derwin James at#7 please Licht. Joe give up on that so called big three because it’s not happening Derwin James is our guy. He brings that hometown passion to make it work and would lead to Hargreaves becoming a better player as well. Give up on the big three and draft Derwin James please end of question. We will get a RB later in the second round maybe Michel from Georgia who happens to be another native that will bring that passion.

  94. Bucsfanman Says:

@Jarhead (The poster formerly known as MarineBucsFan)- First, I’d like to thank you for the honor of taking my suggestion! Who knew that simply changing your name would garner so much grief?! I never thought your request was out of line and would have changed my name out of respect accordingly.
    Semper Fi

I disagree about James though. Watching the ACC, he barely stood out on a terrible defense. That’s not transcendent, that’s not #7 worthy IMO. I could see that pick later, just not at 7. And, with Dot nursing an injury, we are now REALLY in need of o-line help.

  95. BucTrooper Says:

The two best cover-corners in the league were both generated by FSU and the FSU coaching staff that produced D James.

  96. GrumpyBuc Says:

I think the problem with Derwin (and it’s been reported) is that he doesn’t fit a certain position. Where do we put him? Also, he has played in just 26 games. He still has a lot of development to go. I don’t think he is worth a 7th rd pick. maybe later in the 1st rd or early 2nd rd.

  97. Jarhead Says:

@Bucsfanman, right on brother!!! Agree with the OLine help, really hoping for Nelson. Derwin is the guy that seems to be 50/50 split for Bucs fans.

  98. GrumpyBuc Says:

Yes, I’m pulling for Nelson. If these teams are really going to move up to take all these QBs, then bad for them, great for us.

  99. GrumpyBuc Says:

I think the one thing appealing about Derwin, is his ability to lead. Would be good to have another leader in the locker room. I just don’t see him fitting here.
