A Kicker

April 12th, 2018

When will it stop?

[UPDATED 7:34 a.m.]

Only the Bucs.

If there has been a constant with the Bucs since kicker Connor Barth blew out an Achilles in his kicking leg playing basketball in the summer of 2013, it’s how the Bucs’ kicking position has been a complete nightmare and at times a total trainwreck.

From MRSA-infected Lawrence Tynes to directionally-challenged Kyle Brindza to extra-point struggling Roberto Aguayo to Nick “Choke” Folk, the Bucs just cannot get out of their own way when it comes to kickers.

Even when the Bucs seemed to have found a semi-average kicker like Patrick Murray, even he succumbs to this quicksand of a team for kickers.

Publicly, the Bucs were relieved to sign former Jets kicker Chandler Catanzaro in free agency last month. But how content are they?

Not enough, it appears. Per the fingers of NFL draft analyst Jared Tokarz, the Bucs will host Florida Gators kicker Eddy Pineiro this week. Pineiro is not considered part of the team’s 30 allotted team facility visits. He is considered local.

When will this seemingly perpetual merry-go-round cease?

Who cares you might get 5 or 6 of 30 players does it really matter?and after Folk who can blame them?

  2. aussieBucfan Says:

Does he count as 1 of the 30 or is it a free hit due to the metropolitan rule?

  3. Kalind Says:

He won’t count against the 30 same way Derwin didnt

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Maybe they exhausted their visit budget and Pinero is driving to OBP.

  5. Joe Blahak Says:

    The curse of Matt Bryant….

  6. Bucsfanman Says:

Well, there goes our 2nd round pick!!!

  7. Leon Says:

He won’t count.. local visit and kid hit 81yder in practice there is video.. undrafted why not?!

  8. Shayne Says:

Do your research before you post articles Joe. This does NOT count against our 30 visits.

  9. Mark Says:

Which is exactly what Joe said Shayne

  10. BridleOaksBuc Says:

    EDDIE! EDDIE! EDDIE!

  11. BringBucsBack Says:

Y not? The kid can kick.

BucsFan, the Bucs don’t have a 3rd to go along with the 4th as ammo to trade back into the 2nd;)

  12. El_Buc941 Says:

Joe I am perfectly fine with them drafting a kicker…after round 6.

  13. Bucsfanman Says:

@BringBucsBack- Who said anything about trading back?! 🙂

  14. Trump's Stylist Says:

The kid has a strong leg and teams will carry at least 2 kickers through training camp and preseason. Seems to make sense, even to me.

  15. tnew Says:

I like him as a prospect. I’d drop a 6th on him without issue. He’s way more solid mechanically than Aguayo was. We probably are 7-9, 8-8 with him on the roster last season.

  16. Pickgrin Says:

Bucs guaranteed Catanzaro $3.75M this year – so any other kicker coming into camp is just trying to put good things on tape in hopes that another team might pick them up.

Catanzaro better work out because that’s pretty much the definition of “putting all your eggs in one basket”.

  17. R.O. Says:

Not sure what the issue is about working out a Kicker? What’s the problem. Even if it did count against the 30 visits who cares. Teams can travel to work out a player all they want. Only visits to a teams Headquarters is limited to 30. The insinuations and flawed logic is rediculous.

  18. Cover Deuce Says:

And why should they be content? Catanzaro was a little streaky in AZ before he got to NY. He still needs to be pushed, and I bet they at least sign a UDFA K to do it.

  19. Birdman Says:

He was a local visit, like FSU’s Ryan Green.
It won’t count our 30 visits if I remember correctly, Joe.

  20. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I wish we had a kicker like Matt Bryant.

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Chandler Catanzaro sucks. He’s a signing that Licht will regret.

But this article is a bit blown out of proportion. Just because they bring a guy in, that doesn’t mean they plan to draft him. If this kid goes undrafted, he could be signed as camp meat and an eventual practice squad member.

“When will this seemingly perpetual merry-go-round cease?”

When Licht finally finds the right kicker.

  22. 813bucboi Says:

best kicker in the country……strongest leg in the country…..6th round would work…..im not sold on who we have now….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!!

  23. NFLNut Says:

I wish they would have used the Catanzaro money on EJ Gaines and then spent their 7th rounder on a K, or just brought Murray back, or signed another cheap kicker after the draft …

  24. Horse Liver Says:

And meanwhile Matt Bryant, who MARK DUMBONIK dumped, still booms them for the Falcons 10 years later. Dumbonik — what a maroon.

  25. Mike Johnson Says:

The curse of Roberto Aguayo. Wasted 2nd rounder. One of the Bucs..many sins!!

  26. Roy T. Buford Says:

Gotta get him in a high round before anyone else can grab him.

    Not.

  27. Trubucfan22 Says:

99% of the time nfl teams bring in camp legs to work out during training camp. Over dramatic much?
