Report: Bucs Offered Fourth For Quinn

March 5th, 2018

Had sweeter deal declined.

It is starting to smell like there was nothing Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht could do.

Per Jenna Laine of ESPN, she had two NFL sources tell her Licht offered up a fourth round pick for the services of Rams defensive end Robert Quinn. Yet the Rams shipped Quinn off to Miami for a fourth and swapping slots in the sixth round.

Joe looked up the draft picks in question and Licht actually offered up a better ransom than Miami. The Bucs have the eighth pick in the fourth round, or 108th overall.

The Dolphins had the 11th pick in the fourth round.

So it sure smells like one of three things: Either the Rams had zero intention of trading with the Bucs, the Rams didn’t want to trade Quinn within in the NFC, or Licht simply got sandbagged.

Plus they swapped picks in 6th round , I would do that to get Quinn , dropping down 11 spots in the 6th is no big deal , that pick prob won’t make 53 anyways

  2. denjoe Says:

Sounds like people covering for Licht!

  3. Waterboy Says:

If that’s true there wasn’t much more that Licht could have done. I wouldn’t have given up anything higher than a early 4th rd pick for Quinn with only 2 yrs. left on his contract and a history of back injuries. Rams probably didn’t want to risk facing him in a playoff game and having it come back to bite them.

  4. NFLNut Says:

I said that was probably it yesterday … the Rams weren’t going to trade Quinn within the NFC … no big deal.

  5. Capt.Tim Says:

    Again.
When you need something that desperately, you make them a deal they cant refuse.
If Miami offers a 4th- then we give them our 2nd!!
Do we really think the Bucs will draft a rookie in the 2nd- who is better than Quinn? Especially with our lousy coaches!!
Quinn is immediate help, for a position in critical condition!

No matter what the Rams intention were- you can make a deal they cant resist.

Only perennial losers like the Bucs, would have missed out on a proven pass rusher- when dont have one.
Even if Licht is planing on trading up for Chubb- you still do not let a pass rusher like Quinn get away.

Another loser move by a loser team

  6. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Agree with Capt. Tim. Offer a second or third and get the guy in Tampa! We just keep on missing on guys that could clearly help us out. There isn’t a better pass rusher going to be available through free agency, and there probably won’t be one available at #7. But nah, let’s keep pinching pennies and saving draft picks. Maybe we will find a star punter this time in the second, because that’s clearly more valuable than a Pro Bowl DE. I love this team and am trying to be positive, but this nonsense is getting really old. It’s not like we are one pass rusher away. We literally could bring in 3 and it might still not be enough. At this point, I wouldn’t be totally shocked if we don’t draft or sign one.

  7. NFLNut Says:

    ^ INSANITY.

Heck, let’s offer the #7 overall for Michael Bennett while we’re at it … COME ON MAN!

  8. dexterOHMAN Says:

Offering a second round pick for Quinn would be way too much.

  9. webster Says:

    @ nflnut

    You cant teach stupid

  10. tmaxcon Says:

Winners close deals. Losers justify missing out.

  11. Jeffbuc Says:

Yeah a 3rd and just take our 6th if that’s what it takes to get a player like that. I would take him over the 3rd round linebacker we draft even though that is our deepest position. And a 6th round safety /corner that in 2 years we still won’t know if he is a safety or corner.

  12. NFLNut Says:

Dexter and Webster … you’re both spot on.

tmaxcon … you’re right, but it’s also true that IDIOTS get taken advantage of in deals … and offering a 2nd when the best offer on the table is a 4th is something an IDIOT would do.

  13. NFLNut Says:

JeffBuc … with the 3rd and the cap space Quinn would have eaten up we could sign a starting CB and draft a starting quality DT … Quinn is NOT worth that, not even close imho.

  14. Destinjohnny Says:

Our owners fired tony dungy and Jon Gruden.
    They Actually Hired Raheem Morris.
    Wow

  15. BucsFan90 Says:

Lich should have made a better, less stingy offer then. Everything about this smells of penny pinching. Theres a reason why this moron refuses to talk about Calais Campbell

  16. Sunny Says:

2ns is way to much , should have given 4th and 6th instead on 4th and 6th rd swap Miami did , we should of had it than considering we have better picks than them , basically we missed him over that 6th rd pick and we have an extra from Pitt

  17. adam from ny Says:

    i smell bs…

  18. Oxycondoms Says:

Licht is saving his second rounder for Gregg the leg

  19. Capt.Tim Says:

    Watch,
Quinn will get 8-10 sacks for thefins.
We’ll draft a kicker with the 2nd round pick,
    Or another tiny,Slow Cb

Fins fight for a playoff spot, Bucs battle for top draft pick

You genuises tell me who, in the last 5 years, we’ve drafted that helps this team more than Quinn would right now

Not just the team thats stupid

  20. Capt.Tim Says:

    “Drafted in the 2nd round”

  21. LakeLand Says:

    He offer more for a Placekicker..a 3rd and 4th.

  22. LakeLand Says:

How DUMB was that?…trading a 3rd and 4th for a placekicker. But then you play hardball for a proven DE.

  23. Pickgrin Says:

That 4th that was offered was basically a late 3rd. Pretty much the same spot we got Beckwith at last year as there were so many 3rd rd supplemental picks and we traded up to the very last one. Quinn and his fairly expensive 2 year contract is not worth more than that.

Licht can find us a good player with that pick just past #100.

OR – if Browns and Giants take QBs at 1 and 2 – and Indy takes Barkley at 3 and Chubb makes it to #4 – then our 3rd and 4th rd picks is enough to move from 7 up to 4 if the Browns were willing to move down 3 slots and pick up 2 extra picks.

  24. Defense Rules Says:

@NFLNut … ” INSANITY.” Yes Nut, I know you were being facetious, but INSANITY is actually the perfect word for what goes in Bucs’ management circles. Yes Robert Quinn only had 2 yrs left on his contract, and yes that contract was for around $12 mil a yr. Yes, Quinn will be 28 in a couple of months (might only have 4-6 yrs left?). BUT … Bucs are desperate for experienced DEs, Bucs have the money to pay him, and Rams’ GM isn’t stupid. Licht needed to make that deal, UNLESS he KNOWS there’s something better behind Door #2. I’m not holding my breath.

  25. Bucn Enough Says:

    2018 Bucs Marking Campaign

    “Surrender the Booty”

  26. NFLNut Says:

DEFENSERULES … again, $12mil and a 3rd round pick … Licht can get a starter with that pick and possibly BOTH a starting DT AND a starting SS with the $12mil … Quinn wasn’t worth it … and to day he’s got 4-6 years left … he may have 1-2 left, if that depending on how gimpy his back is … the NFL isn’t the NBA; careers are short.

  27. Rashad Says:

I’m starting to believe that some people just don’t like our gm. Offering a second rd pick for someone who has 2 years left on a contract and history of back problems is dumb.

  28. Bobby M. Says:

Licht won’t make any more deals that remotely resembles reaching for a player. The Aguayo trade damaged him, he was the joke of the draft to his peers. I don’t think players see the Tampa situation as long term so maybe they tell their representatives anywhere but here or Cleveland

  29. REdtop5588 Says:

I trust in Litch he always has a plan for offseason not saying they always work but at least has a plan

  30. Mike Says:

Are you guys even Bucs fans? 90% of people on this blog just bash the Bucs. Free agency hasn’t even started and you guys have thrown in the towel.

  31. darin Says:

    Nflnut
Get over yourself. Now youre putting caps on guys careers? The guys 27 and one of tbe best pass rushers in the league. You obviously havnt watched this defense much. As long as smitty is here the team must generate pressure with 4. He has shown that over 2 years. Quinn was an instant solution. Who cares about his 12 mil theyre not close to the cap. N licht can get a starter with the 3rd round pick? Of course he can. If it isnt a starter who can get the qb off his spot it will be a replay of last year. A dt or a safety or cb? Yeah we need another player to sit in a cover 2 zone and watch qbs turn into montana. Thatd be greaaaaaat

  32. Buc believer Says:

Licht is a JOKE!!! I think he may have hit his head on the side of his pool when he did that stunt 2 years ago whenever the Bucs won.

  33. Waterboy Says:

The same people saying the Bucs should’ve offered more than an early 4th round pick would be the same ones calling for Licht’s head next season if Quinn comes in like Sweezy and barely plays due to a back injury he suffered prior to joining the team.

  34. Dan Says:

No one wants to play for us anyway. Over a decade of loosing and absolutely no hope for more than 5 wins this season.

  35. AlteredEgo Says:

and the Bucs threw in Barron a few years early too….

  36. D-Rome Says:

    Totally confident, right guys?

  37. Bucsfanman Says:

The Bucs? At least we were in the “talks”. Otherwise, crickets!

I agree with you. I would understand people expressing some frustration, but most of these people hope the Bucs do poorly just so Licht and Koetter get fired.

They would rather see that happen then make the playoffs, win the division or even win the Super Bowl. And yet…they say they are fans.

Real fans (and I know they hate that term) get frustrated, express it and then move on. They watch, they hope, and they look at the good side of things for the team, instead of focusing on the bad.

For example…you and I might see an offensive line that is mostly young and mostly new to their positions, so it needs time to develop and gel. They look at it as though because we didn’t win a ‘meaningful game’ (which to them is no less than a super bowl), the whole line needs replacing.

Where we saw VHIII’s bad year, they automatically assume he’s a bust, whereas we might at least acknowledge he’s three years younger than Winston (who is considered young) and simply had a bad sophomore year as part of the development process. His bad sophomore year came at the same age that Ronde Barber was in his rookie year. Development.

We saw the glass maybe as a quarter full at the end of last season, but within a matter of weeks, we started getting over our disappointment and saw it as half full and getting fuller.

Haters say we’re out of touch with reality, when they are the ones guilty of that because of their hate. They see everything through a dark cloud.

  41. SteveK Says:

    Nfl Nut,

I’d offer our 3 for Quinn.

And if you want to argue about the $12 million price tag, we could just cut Ayers and Sweezy and be set.

We need a pass rush in the worst way. If this team fails to make playoffs then we can look back at the nonmove: Calais Campbell, Marcus Peters, and Robert Quinn. Imagine those three on defense.

  42. Costa Rica John Says:

It was the Rams decision. It would have been nice to have Quinn here but since we can’t why dwell on it. Licht get out there and find some diamonds in the rough. Go Bucs!

  43. 813bucboi Says:

    im callin BS…..Quinn was a serious need……why not offer them a 3rd…….he should’ve made them a deal they couldn’t refuse…….

this is just yet another excuse……

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!

  44. LynchMob Says:

I’m just curious if Quinn had any say in the decision. Did the Rams tell Quinn that he had to choose between Miami and Tampa? Maybe he chose Miami. If the compensation is basically equal, what do the Rams care? Let Quinn pick.

  45. D-Rome Says:

That would be surprising as that would be bad business on the Rams part.

You think Licht should be worried about having only 2 years for Quinn??? Lmao!!! That dude should be worried about the next 2 months if he doesn’t get some decent pass rush.

We spent a second on Noah Spence. Love the guy, but he just can’t stay healthy and can’t be trusted. At least Quinn has 3 double digit sack seasons. The point of my post is that you do what you have to do to get the help you so desperately need. We aren’t in the position to be real picky, since Licht has basically ignored the second most important position in football. We need guys that have proven they can get to the QB, and Quinn is one of a very few that can do that. But nah, let’s draft nickel back with that pick, because I’m sure that will me much more valuable. SMH

Something an idiot would do is spend a 2nd round pick on a kicker, or sign a stealing waste of space like Baker to the contract he got, or keeping a bum like Martin on the roster a year too long. or resigning a guy like Ghostlon that looks like Tarzan and plays like Jane. I much rather spend a 2nd round pick on a proven DE (which we desperately need) than wasting it on a punk ass rookie kicker. This is what I meant when I said Licht doesn’t have the cojones to make an aggressive, bold move to make this team better. I’m starting to think that some of you are related to Licht the way you’re constantly defending his dumb ass!

Well keep in mind that our past is part of our present. Hiring Radio Morris as a head coach was almost as smart as signing Tankass Baker to this team. Let’s remember it was Radio Morris and Mark Dummynik were the one’s that went after and drafted mental midget Jerry Curl Freeman……that really panned out well! lol It’s all cause and effect, the Glazers have been dragging this team through the NFL gutter ever since they fired Jon Gruden. Their fron office moves just keep getting worse and worse.

  50. Chris Says:

Maybe Quinn had some input of where he wanted to go? If both the Bucs and browns offered 4th rounders, both picks are higher than Miami’s.

  51. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“What free agent worth his salt would want to come to Tampa and play for a lame duck front office and coaching staff? None!”

    One that likes money.

  52. Tom S. Says:

“Joe looked up the draft picks in question and Licht actually offered up a better ransom than Miami. The Bucs have the eighth pick in the fourth round, or 108th overall.”

As usual in life, Joe is wrong. The offer of the 108th pick is 6 pts in value higher than the 111th pick (78 vs 72). The difference between the swapping of draft picks in the 6th round between Miami and LAR is….wait for it…..6 points (pick 183 worth 18.2 whereas 198 is 12.2). So no, LA wasn’t refusing to deal with Licht purely because he’s an idiot. They took the Miami deal because the value was the same and they liked their offer slightly better.

If someone offers a deal equivalent to your own for a product, guess what you do? Up your freaking offer. If Licht offered the same 4th and 6th swap, he would have won the day, given the Bucs picks are better than the Dolphins. Alas, Jason Licht is our GM, so we can’t have nice things.

  55. Rod Munch Says:

You give up a 3rd and get the deal done.

In fact since the deal isn’t actually done until March 14 you call the Rams again and say lets get this done.

Losing a guy who will absolutely be your starter for at least 2 years and should produce at a high level at the place on the team you need help the most over a 3rd round pick… just dumb.

  56. GrudenForPresident Says:

@Captain Tim I somewhat agree with you. I dunno about our 2nd but definitely our 3rd and our compensatory pick for sure.
