New Recruiter
March 20th, 2018As Joe noted a week or so ago, unlike previous offseasons, this offseason you rarely hear a peep coming from the pied piper of the Bucs, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.
In the past, Jameis was out front trying to lure talented players to the Bucs. Outside of a vague Twitter post or two, Jameis has largely been silent this winter, relegated to posting workout videos on social media and treating his soon-to-be baby mama and long-time girlfriend to a lavish birthday dinner.
It appears the newest member of the Bucs family has supplanted, at least for now, Jameis’ spot as lead recruiter. And that is defensive line coach Brentson Buckner.
Yesterday when new defensive lineman Vinny Curry appeared at One Buc Palace, Curry specifically cited Buckner’s research and sales pitch that put the Bucs atop his shopping list.
“The first thing that sticks out to me is the hire of Coach Buck,” Curry said. “When I talked to him on the phone, it seemed like he had a manual out on me. It was like, ‘Okay, this guy understands Vinny Curry.’ The way he presented, the way he wants guys to rush and wants his D-Line room to be, his coaching staff, I thought it suited me best. It gives me that opportunity to go out there and earn the right to be an every-down player and not just roll here, roll there. It was a great fit. He definitely knows what he’s talking about.
“This was on the phone; I hadn’t even gotten to meet him yet. Today I met him in person. But on the phone, the way he presented his style of coaching, I was like, ‘Yeah.’ Whether it’s key match ups, the one thing he said was, ‘I can get you to the water but I can’t make you drink.’ It was a great opportunity for me.”
Well, if Curry does anything for the Bucs, Buckner’s hire will pay off immediately for being able to woo defenders to help his franchise, which by the way was the worst defense in the NFL last season.

Time for JW to quit the talk, and do the Walk.
March 20th, 2018 at 5:52 am
Let’s hope Curry and Allen are here to play and not load now that they have a ring.

My thoughts exactly bnomo.. And he is doing just that BTW. Seems like Jamie’s is putting everything to the side except for the training and working hard so he can be ready to roll
March 20th, 2018 at 6:40 am
Love It
Coaches have serious pull in this league if they have street cred from the players
And There is no question that players talk.
As far as Jameis goes , if he wins some more games and bucs getting back to winning football, they will come for him too.
March 20th, 2018 at 6:42 am
Please get the Entire Dline to the water.
Sensing a slight change in culture… for the better. It sure seems like this off season we are not hearing as much yapping and talking from the players.
GOOD! Spend your time training and let your play on the field do your talking.
As fans, we’re sick of hearing the same player crap talk every year in off-season, and then they always shat the season away by Oct.
March 20th, 2018 at 6:56 am
Coaches can make a huge difference on players….and they can also make a huge difference on other coaches….let’s hope Buckner is the real deal.
March 20th, 2018 at 6:58 am
Winston recruited d Jack an offensive player when before Mike Evans doesn’t matter that he doesn’t know what kind of players Mike Smith wants drama queens
March 20th, 2018 at 7:02 am
@Joe
Only rats followed the pied piper!!!!!!!!!
Funny how no one has come to Buc land because of gmc!!!!! And if word on the street is to be believed, then captain media actually hurts in recruiting D-line for the last many years!!!!!!!!!
Go Bucs!!!!!!!
March 20th, 2018 at 7:08 am
Please…..oh please Mr.Licht, make a trade that involves GMC and then go get Chubb and watch our defense become badass again.
March 20th, 2018 at 7:22 am
@Not there yet,
Are you drunk?
March 20th, 2018 at 7:38 am
Lambchop if you answer like that at a checkpoint you get a DUI
March 20th, 2018 at 7:50 am
GMC and Kwon both recruit, the problem is when they do it publicly, the Bucs brass won’t act because the it would appear the players have influence on the front office decisions. Why did honey badger sign with the Texans – JJ Watt. Some teams have no problem with their players have an opinion. This is the reason, we know we need Eric Reid, won’t have to use a first or second round pick on a safety, but Reid has an opinion and the Bucs don’t like that, I have never heard that Reid is a bad teammate.
March 20th, 2018 at 7:50 am
Can we just fire Mike Smith now and promote this guy?
March 20th, 2018 at 8:04 am
Buckner is the biggest offseason get, by far, to date.
March 20th, 2018 at 8:04 am
Word on the street says your a Jack Ass!
March 20th, 2018 at 8:10 am
Below average can be blamed on lack of talent. Dead last is coaching ….simple as that. Can’t wait to see Mike Smith after the games with the same old “We gotta do a better job putting these guys into a position to succeed,We gotta do a better job as coaches” week after week after week same excuses same.b.s just like Lovie.
March 20th, 2018 at 8:11 am
GMC recruits???? Ha Ha Ha!!!! Yeah he recruits players that will put up with his pansy ass ways. He wants Tuttie Fruitie players on the line with him. He doesn’t want men that will tear off your head and spit down your neck and then step over you while your on the ground.
March 20th, 2018 at 8:37 am
And with ASJ, they couldn’t get him to stop drinking. Wait, that wasn’t water…nevermind.
March 20th, 2018 at 8:42 am
Lunchbox like a coach can stop a player from drinking or doing drugs. Watching any of the news about the problems with this in the Country? Oh, if someone in America just told the kids drugs were bad for you they would stop…
March 20th, 2018 at 8:52 am
Buckner better be renting cancer93 won’t tolerate winning or the tough guy routine….
masculinity is CANCER93 kryptonite
March 20th, 2018 at 9:05 am
Let me remind you people all the same accolades and enthusiasm was spewed on these pages about how great and how lucky we were to have Coach Hayes almost verbatim yet cancer93 sucked the life out of Hayes and ran him out of town… wake up bucfan nothing bucs will do matters until CANCER93 is eradicated
March 20th, 2018 at 9:08 am
And just who is it that Jameis would be recruiting? It appears that Licht is happy with the men that he has on offense up to the draft. Now Kwon on the other hand could be talking to some defensive folks.
As far as coach Buck, players want to hear from coaches how they will be used and how much they will play. Can’t get that info from fellow players
March 20th, 2018 at 9:10 am
JW, also known as the “turnover machine,” no longer has the credibility he once enjoyed. However, he can get it back if this season goes well. His “finger licking good” pep talk ruined him as someone to take seriously. I am glad to see we have a credible coach to recruit some defensive help. Maybe JW can learn how to be a better professional from Buckner, even if it is indirectly. Maybe, JW will just let his play speak for him, and say a lot less nonsense in pre-game pep rants. This will also help him regain some sense of credibility.
March 20th, 2018 at 9:11 am
If GMC is lazy it’s because he doesn’t have to do much to be our best defensive lineman. Bring him some competition to fire him up. Slap suh next to him and watch that nasty disposition motivate them boys. I wanna see spit and elbows flying in the middle let’s turn up on defense. We are not GB or the saints we need to stop being cute and trying to win all on offense. We can keep guys fresh with our new backups and let that Tampa sun drain our opponents.
March 20th, 2018 at 9:13 am
keep it real vinny!!!!!!!…..the cash recruited you!!!!!….you came to the bucs because you have a ring and its time to cash out!!!!!!!……
#NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….NOPASSESIN2018!!!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!
March 20th, 2018 at 9:18 am
James Craig Marlow
Sadly, I agree with you
March 20th, 2018 at 9:19 am
Everybody except Alan Iverson has heard the cliche you play like you practice.
There’s certainly some truth to that as well as #3’s iron sharpens iron. If practices are a tough mean deal generally the team that emerges is tough and mean.
Jensen…Marpet…and if we get Nelson have a chance to truly help change the culture of this team.
Everybody is excited about the chance to get an interior group of mean maulers and what that means to our running game and pass protection…but if they’re really mean and can live up to Jensen’s reputation its also going to help our interior DL and the entire front seven.
The OL can help set the “mood” for our DL.
March 20th, 2018 at 9:21 am
Smith doesn’t have time to recruit. Too busy taking calls from the parade of NFL teams dying to make him head coach.
Thank goodness we got him tied in with a fat contract.
March 20th, 2018 at 9:44 am
I think Buckner is going to really help this team. The recruiting is just a bonus.
Because of his relatively recent playing experience Buckner “knows” DL players.
Translation of his phone call with Curry…
“Listen big fella I know what’s bugging you. You’re getting pulled too often on 3rd down!!! You can read, you’re in the league, you know our problems trying to get to the QB. Come to Tampa and I’ll get you your 3rd down reps and give you an opportunity to be a star. Although I’ll add this. “I can get you to the water and give you the opportunity, but you got to be the guy who does the drinking.”.

Joe, please update/change the verbiage when referring to the future mother of his child. Calling her a “future baby mama” is disrespectful. You should know how to apply what I’m guessing you would call, “jive talk” before you actually put terms in print that can embarrass people and yourself.
March 20th, 2018 at 10:04 am
Sure sure yeah yeah… Money is the best motivator. Love how we’re supposed to think pro NFL players are motivated by this rah-rah high school crap.
March 20th, 2018 at 11:06 am
I have really high hopes for Buckner. He’s worked with some good d lineman on good defenses. Top notch safety Tyrann Mathieu tweeting he will be a future DC. With him it feels like he can do well at coaching guys that aren’t just all-stars. We shall see, but I have a feeling we will at least get more than 22 sacks this year.
March 20th, 2018 at 11:47 am
There’s also an inherent conflict between the “we’re a family” concept and the business side of the NFL, the cold truth of 53 roster spots and a hard cap limit.
Curry-in means Ayers is cut. Ayers and Winston came out of the same Baby Corp mold. They had to be friends or at least have a lot of mutual respect. Last year VJax was retiring and Shephard had moved on. This year, Jameis knows that if he publicly recruits a guy, he’s telling a another family member. “We don’t want you any more.” Brady had to learn this with the Pats. “I learned that the coaches coach and I play.”
March 20th, 2018 at 1:36 pm
Coach
What is disrespectful is buccaneers on field product led by cancer93
March 20th, 2018 at 2:30 pm
Let’s not forget that marpet and d smith helped to recruit Jensen as well!
March 20th, 2018 at 2:33 pm
I really wish the Bucs would explore the possibility of trading McCoy. Not that I don’t like him but this year would be the perfect time to get some draft picks for him. I know damn well the glazers would never get rid of their golden boy tho 🙁

Until Jameis takes responsibility and marries that woman, it is Jameis making her a “baby mama.”

He looks like cutty off the wire
