Lose Your Saquon Barkley Fantasies, Bucs Fans

March 2nd, 2018

Franchise-changer

It’s that draft time of year with the NFL Scouting Combine in full swing, so of course Bucs fans want to hear from former rockstar general manager Mark Dominik.

The man who guided the Bucs from 2009 through 2013, including the one post-Chucky glory year of 2010, works for SiriusXM NFL Radio. Without question, Dominik is one of the nation’s elite analysts. He puts in the film work, knows the business inside and out, retains many league contacts, and he boils down complex info into average-Joe speak.

Dominik was at the NFL Scouting Combine all week and was asked today if stud Penn State running back Saquon Barkley would be there for the Browns with the No. 4 overall pick in the draft, assuming they selected a quarterback at No. 1.

“Not after today,” Dominik said, referring to Barkley’s explosiveness on display, including a 41-inch vertical leap and a 4.41-second, 40-yard-dash time. (See video below)

On drafting Barkley, Dominik said he’s a player that can “change the team overnight.”

Man, the Bucs sure could use that kind of metamorphosis. But so could the Giants (picking No. 2 overall) and the Colts (No. 3), and the Browns would be yearning for a beast in the backfield if they do go QB at No. 1. The Jets at No. 5 need a running back, too.

The landscape could change a lot in free agency, but it sure looks like it’s now a waste of time for Bucs fans to think about Barkley. Joe can’t imagine one of these teams wanting to trade down for a price that Jason Licht would stomach.

  1. LakeLand Says:

The Cleveland Browns would be the biggest dummies ever to draft a QB with the 1st pick. Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield seems equal. If not equal, I don’t see much to separate them. If the Browns want more offense. They should draft Barkley with the first pick, then draft one of the four QBs with the 4th pick.

  2. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

Ummm…first, the Jets are at #6, not #%…that’s Denver.

Second……no one was talking about sitting at #7.

Then also, and to a lesser degree…Dominik can think what he wants.

The only thing standing between Barkley and the Bucs, are draft picks from 1, probably 2, possibly 3 draft years, and players we can throw in. Throw in cash too.

It’s just about finding the fire to do so. Blindside people.

    Not backpeddling into (more) mediocrity.

This Bucs fan thinks Licht does now have that kind of kill-or-be-killed emotional landscape.

    Go Bucs!

  3. cgmaster Says:

We all knew Barkely was going to blow up the combine, but any idea of trading up for him is just foolish. Especially on a team with as many needs as we have. I”m starting to like Guice the more I see him. We need a lot more angry on this team. AS for Barkley, I think he will be a good pro but lets not throw around hyperbole like transcendent and stuff these announcers are saying. I mean I’ve never seen this much pub for a guy that literally had 8 games last year under 100 yards rushing, 3 of those games under 50 rushing yards.

  4. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    *not #5 Denver

  5. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

@Lakeland, correct, and unless IND trades down, only the Giants might pick a QB, leaving most likely 3 of the top 4 QB prospects remaining.

As a Buc fan hot for Barkely.. this saddens me

  6. LakeLand Says:

    cgmaster,

Saquon Barkley also had 10 games with 18 carries or less.

  7. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

The unfortunate thing about opinions….is that everyone can have one.

    Go Bucs!

  8. Buc believer Says:

I sure am happy we got that win the last game of the year now!!! 😏😏😏

  9. Lord Cornelius Says:

“Dominik is one of the nation’s elite analysts”

I’ve literally never found any single thing he’s said to be insightful or unique compared to other analysts.

He states the obvious each year. He talks about the obvious prospects and gives generic typical regurgitated sounding opinions.

Him saying Barkley won’t last to 4 after today is an obvious reaction everyone would have. It’s also another typical over-reaction to combine results. Everyone already knew Barkley was fast/strong. Everyone already had him as one of the top 2 overall prospects in the draft. This just cements it really. Everyone understands his combine results have been phenomenal.

If anything – the more I hear Dominic speak – the more it becomes obvious that he thinks of the NFL like a simple Madden game or something. He definitely is not anyone I’d ever regard highly for a scouting opinion on a player; given his absolute horrific failures in the draft.

In 5 years and 37 draft picks only 4 players got 2nd contracts (McCoy/David/Martin/Gholston). 2 of those contracts look bad in retrospect. So 2 long term players in 37 draft picks.

That’s insanely bad. You almost have to try to purposefully draft horribly for that to happen. I’m not sure you can even find a worse performance

  10. Lord Cornelius Says:

Teams don’t typically identify QBs in a “we’ll just take whichever of these 2 or 3 are there” philosophy.

All the QBs in this draft are very different in terms of skill sets and the type of offense you’d implement around them. If the Browns identify a guy as “their guy” they aren’t going to take the chance of losing him by pick 4. It’s very rare a team would rate 2 QBs the same much less 3.

Browns would be best off trying to trade to get picks 1 and 2 and lock up the QB they want + Barkley

  11. Bucs55 Says:

This draft is so deep on Running back there’s a lot of good running backs to trade away the future for one player fix the fronts there’s still going to be great talent later in the draft a kid I love is Kellen Ballard from ASU great size and speed reminds me of Bell comming out of MSU

  12. DoSomething Says:

Yeah that moral victory in game 16 is the difference between a Jalen Ramsey and a Hargreaves. For all the hate Lovie Smith got at least they knew what was best for the franchise when they ranked the last game of a meaningless season

  13. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    🙂 cgmaster….

Cause Gurley is just a running back.

Cause Lev Bell is just a running back.

Neither of them, have transformed their teams, or been “transcendent” in their brief NFL experience, for their teams. And it’s not…like…LaDanian Tomlinson knows what he’s talking about speaking on Saquon that way…he’s onle a dual-purpose back in the Hall of Fame.

    🙂

    Go Bucs!

  14. LakeLand Says:

I love a 3 down RB and Saquon Barkley is the perfect 3 down RB. He can run the ball, he can catch the ball, he can block and pickup blitzes . He caught 54 passes in 2017. When he’s on the field, you can keep defenses guessing.

  15. feelthepewterpower Says:

Well, yeah, of course he’s a franchise qb…and the odds of him being there at seven even before this 40 were slim to none. He’s the next LT…..the dude shredded Ohio St. and they had a mediocre line at best…

  16. feelthepewterpower Says:

Browns take Barkley at number one….yep, you heard it first 😉

  17. feelthepewterpower Says:

when I mention ohio state that barkley shredded…I meant nearly an entire defense of nfl drafted players.

  18. cgmaster Says:

BetterBucinBelieveit, Tomlinson also said the same thing about Reggie bush, how did that work out? As for Gurley, he ‘s had one great season, don’t make him out to be a ready HOF. Lev Bell is fantastic but I heard transcendent about Elliot too. How many playoff games has he won Dallas? Did Gurley win the Rams a playoff game? My point is valid that trading up for him would be foolish. You’re top rusher last year were rookies drafted in the second, as well as you’re rookie of the year.

  19. Bucs55 Says:

    Feelthepewterpower

It would make sense get the best player in the draft with the first pick and then pick up you’re QB with the 4th pick

  20. cgmaster Says:

    Lakeland,
he also has the pleasure of playing such powerhouse defenses as Indiana, Pittsburgh, Georgia state, and the rest of the bottom of the big ten. ANd the YPC is what I care about, and he had 3 games under 3 yards a carry. I’m not saying Barkely is bad, before I get lynch mobbed by posters, I’m just saying trading up at any point would just not make sense.

  21. LakeLand Says:

None of these QBs in the draft stands out to me. And they don’t stand out to any of the top draft analysts. Saquon Barkley is the top rated prospect on most analysts board. And there is no way I pass him up for one of the QBs. Especially when I have the 4th pick also. WalterFootball has the Browns drafting Barkley 1st, Sam Darnold 4th.This what they said.

A quarterback appears to be the most popular choice, but it doesn’t make logical sense to take a signal-caller at No. 1 overall, given that Cleveland has the fourth-overall selection as well. It makes zero sense to go quarterback, because if the Browns take Saquon Barkley, they’re guaranteed to land two of Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen or Baker Mayfield at No. 4. Barkley, meanwhile, could be gone by then. He is the best player in this class, and he has a legitimate chance to be chosen first overall (or second, if the Giants and Browns flip selections). He’s drawn comparisons to Marshall Faulk, and he’s unlikely to get past the Colts at No. 3 overall, barring a trade.

Besides, there’s no consensus top player at the position. Darnold had a down year. Rosen has said that he doesn’t want to play for the Browns. There have been rumors linking the Browns to Josh Allen, but I’m not sure I quite buy those yet.

I think it’s possible that the Browns address the position elsewhere, perhaps acquiring A.J. McCarron, Kirk Cousins or Nick Foles. If they do that, they’ll want to pair that signal-caller with an elite play-making weapon, and the first-overall choice would be obvious then.

WalterFootball makes a lot of sense, that’s why I follow them

  26. darin Says:

Licht loves to trade away picks. Wouldnt be surprised if he does it. Hope not tho. Anyone who wants to trade away picks for a 1st round rb hasnt seen the defense play yet. There will be good RBs in the 2nd and 3rd rounds this year, as always. Whatever he does it better not be a DB in round 1 or I’ll never get over that. Beef up the lines and beat teams up.

Not to dignify all this junk about if there IS or ISN’T a 100 yard game, who the f*ck cares?!

If a guy completely changes the way that the opposing prepares during the week to face them on Sunday, has 95 yards and 3 TD’s…and the Bucs win on average a game like 34-28, with the RB touching the ball 30-32 times a game.

Who the f*ck cares about a 100 yard game. Keep crunching your numbers boys.

  31. LakeLand Says:

    LUVMYBUCS

Alvin Kamara only had four 100 yards game rushing. But I look at their overall game. They are still a threat on the field. If the defense stack the box against them. They can block in the passing game, or catch the ball ouf of the backfield. There’s many ways to use an all-around RB. He can and should be a lethal weapon. A weapon that will open up your offense.

  32. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    BetterBuccinBelieveIt

Your not good running back -in this league – if U turn multiple 100 yrd peformances per year.

There’s no way hell you trade multiple premuim picks – for running back.
When there’s serviceable options on the board.

    That’s some “Mark-Dumb-Uh-Phucks” – type sh!t

The Bucs know what Robert Quinn brings to the table. They still have flashbacks from the game when Quinn totally destroyed Big Donald Penn. I have never been sold on Jason Licht as a GM. He’s not a mover or a shaker, he’s a scout.

  43. LakeLand Says:

It would be dumb to trade up for Barkley with as many holes that we have on the defensive side expecually with the amount of talent there is in this draft for RBs there could be 6 maybe even 7 tale backs tooken in the first 50 picks that’s how good this draft is off running backs

  49. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    @Bucs55,

I respect your take on the RB class in this draft. I understand your opinion.

If any individual, can’t see that Barkley is not only just a mere RB compared to the others in the class, but much more…. that he is a tool to scare the life into opposing defensive coordinators during their preparations, also a player to FILL THE SEATS at Buc games (Glazers), also a player to urge the NFL to place us in primetime lineups in 2019 & 2020 (Glazers)….but MOST OF ALL, just a really good character kid that will fire up the entire team up when he arrives, handles the ball, gives the coaches more hope, inspires OTHER FREE AGENTS to come to Tampa…

Then I can’t help you. Any of you.

    Forest….through the trees…boyz.

  59. LakeLand Says:

    LUVMYBUCS

Alvin Kamara was splitting carries in college, that’s why he only had four 100 yard games. Sony Michel also was splitting carries with Nick Chubb, Todd Gurley. Then he became Chubb backup, after Gurley got hurt. After Chubb was hurt, Michel became the man. As big as Josh Adams is, he only had 2 games with 20 carries or more. But Josh had 7, 100 yards rushing games.

  60. JonBuc Says:

Whew! Had the Bucs not beaten the Sleepwalkin’ Saints in the final minute of the final game…they’d have the 5th pick but may have had to let go Licht’s Out as his winning percentage would have dropped below .333. Saved The Dirk & Smiley Smith too! What a win! 👎🏻

  61. MadMax Says:

Yeah, its a pipe dream to think of getting Barkley….We just need to focus on Chubb or Big V, maybe RB Chubb in the 2nd but would rather stay with a trench guy and try for RB Penny with the 3rd…he had a good 40 and pretty good combine.

How about that Desmond Harrison 40? Pretty quick (dont matter much buuuut just saying). Im telling you, get him with a 4th or 5th and theres a possible RT replacement.

  62. NFLNut Says:

FASTER than potential HOF Return Man Devin Hester

  63. Mr. Ed Says:

Joe, your head is so far deep in Dominik’s lap, you should be married to him. Who cares what the worst GM in Bucs history and one of the all time worst in NFL history thinks? Michael Bennett? Dominik!

Dude wouldn’t be hired to collect tickets if there were no other ticket takers. He won’t have another NFL job. Because he SUCKED and everyone in the NFL knows it, laughs at what a naive dorkosaurus he was.

Please stop with the Dominik references.

  64. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

No need to draft a RB that high.

    First things first…

  65. Capt.Tim Says:

Its too bad we wont have a shot at Barkley- he is a game changer!
The league hasnt seen a RB this good in quite awhile.

Im usually strongly against drafting a RB in the first round, but Barkley is so good- if the Bucs gave up their 1st and 2nd round picks to get him- Id be very happy.

The Bucs draft a DE first- with only one exception
    Saquon Barkley

  66. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Remember, we could have had Alvin Kamara, who is a for real game changing back.
Dominik was not a good GM, and it appears that Jason Licht isn’t one either,
The Philly GM, now that is a good GM !
He totally rebuilt his team in a few years, after Chip Kelly took the Eagles apart.

  67. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    @CaptTim,

Now you’re getting it!!! So few out here are.

And like @NFLNut said above…yes, Barkley will go at #1. This fan never disputed that. This fan, and maybe a few others who knows, have wisely proposed how to get to #1, given ALL states of the Buccaneers franchise, to keep it short.

What LICHT should do, is research the last 10 drafts that Dorsey was in charge of, including Kansas City, look at prior trades he made up and down and what the costs plus players of each of those was, see which type of players Dorsey favors in drafts, etc….get his DRAFT DNA. Use that against Dorsey on the way up to #1.

    Go Bucs!

  68. paycomonline login Says:
