Bucs Interviewing Chubb

March 19th, 2018

Bucs will sit down with Bradley Chubb.

Another interview with a defensive end monster.

Joe doesn’t get all worked up when teams and/or draft eligible players say they have talked to a prospective player. Why? As Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht said the week of the combine on Buccaneers.com, the team will at some point chat with every player there before the combine ends.

Private workouts are a different animal. Teams don’t invest the time and money to do that just for spits and giggles.

This morning at 8 a.m., North Carolina State hosts its Pro Day and the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio, reports that the top seven teams in next month’s draft plan to interview Chubb before the end of business today.

And yes, your Buccaneers, baby, draft at No. 7.

The draft was shaken up over the weekend with the Jets trading up to No. 3. So it appears four quarterbacks realistically could drafted in the top six selections. If that is the case, then Bucs will likely draft one of the three following non-quarterbacks: running back Saquon Barkley, guard Quenton Nelson or Chubb.

It is way too early to speculate who goes where but Chubb falling to the Bucs isn’t as nuts as it appeared as recently as last week.

  1. AlteredEgo Says:

For some reason I am weary of Chubb….of course all the ranking/mocks have him high…but I read where his 3 cone drill was slow…which to me means relatively slow feet with slow first step acceleration …maybe it was just a bad day….but the kid LB Truman Edmunds is creeping up in my imagination if Chubb is gone

  2. DislocatedBucsFan Says:

I’m not too impressed. He made a few sacks and tackles that were either the result of atrocious blocking, missed assignments, or he was against a running back. I don’t think the highlight reel provided, gave him enough justice. But there was a few really nice plays to get some sacks. I really liked his hustle and heads up ability to knock the ball out. Outside FSU, I really didn’t notice any really good teams on that reel. I’d take Barkley over him, but we’ll see. I also like the idea of trading back a few spots. Especially for the bounty the colts received.

  3. AlteredEgo Says:

Chubb was 7.37 in the 3 cone drill

here are the average 3-Cone Drill times at the Combine for the pass rushing positions:

    Outside Linebacker, 7.1 seconds
    Defensive End, 7.23 seconds
    Defensive Tackle, 7.59 seconds
Now here are the 3-Cone Drill times for each of those aforementioned 21 players, ordered by how many sacks they’ve recorded in the past three seasons:

    Chandler Jones, 7.07 seconds
    Khalil Mack, 7.08 seconds
    Von Miller, 6.70 seconds
    Ryan Kerrigan, 7.18 seconds
    Cameron Jordan, 7.07 seconds
    Aaron Donald, 7.11 seconds
    Melvin Ingram, 6.83 seconds
    Cameron Wake, 7.12 seconds
    Ezekiel Ansah, 7.11 seconds
    Calais Campbell, 7.45 seconds
    Vic Beasley, 6.91 seconds
    Demarcus Lawrence, 7.46 seconds
    Joey Bosa, 6.89 seconds
    Olivier Vernon, 7.39 seconds
    Frank Clark, 7.08 seconds
    Cliff Avril, 6.90 seconds
    Fletcher Cox, 7.07 seconds
    Gerald McCoy, 7.32 seconds
    Nick Perry, 7.25 seconds
    Justin Houston, 6.95 seconds
    Derrick Morgan, 7.12 seconds

  4. OneBucPerson Says:

I’m still not confident that the Colts will pass him up at 6. I’d love it if they went with Nelson instead because they gave up the most sacks and the 6th most QB hits last season, in addition Andrew Luck is coming off of a missed season with a banged up shoulder. Logic says that Luck is THE most important player on the Colts roster and needs to be protected, BUT they did finish 2nd worst in sacks last season behind us and they are switching from a 3-4 to a (reportedly) Tampa 2 style 4-3 defense without any good D-linemen to speak of. I don’t know, I’m just not confident that Chubb will be there at 7, I think if the Bucs really want him they’ll need to trade up to Denver at 5 or possibly the Browns at 4 to get him.

  5. AlteredEgo Says:

    I’d rather take Edmunds @ 1
    and
    Sam Hubbard @ 2

  6. OrlandoJoe Says:

Guys, Edmunds is not an Edge rusher. Chubb is as good as you could hope for at that position. Light years better than Sam Hubbard or any other prospect this season. Google Bradley Chubb vs FSU and you can see the dude just dominates the game.

  7. adam from ny Says:

i dunno about that highlight tape…it’s seems just okay…he ain’t a super freak

  8. Bird Says:

Wonder if bucs go after browns #4 pick for Chubb. Browns have defensive ends.

  9. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

It’s a wise move to spend the resources to interview him in due diligence. But as @AlteredEgo once said on a recent prior thread….”look over there, look over there”.

Could very well (hopefully) be another cog in the myriad of distraction for other GM’s.

All draft capital rounds 1-4 in 2018-2020 drafts!

    SA-QUON, SA-QUON!

    Go Bucs!

  10. Bird Says:

Colts may go after Nelson after missing out on Jensen.
Colts focus should be on Andrew luck not taking so many hits each year

Could mean Barkley and /or Chubb dropping

  11. OneBucPerson Says:

@Bird That’s a real possibility, Myles Garrett’s potential is through the roof but Ogbah and Nassib aren’t anywhere near that. Chubb would be an improvement over both of them, all I could hope for would be that the Browns like Fitzpatrick more than Chubb.

  12. AlteredEgo Says:

Game in game out Trumaine Edwards will have a greater impact on the game the Chubb

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It would be just a slight gamble for Denver but this latest change at the top of the draft makes a swap with Denver a possibility….they need a QB and Indy doesn’t so they could move to 7 and still get their QB. the trade from 7 to 5 wouldn’t be too expensive for us…..that should get us Chubb. Or we can take our chance that he will be there at 7.
If he isn’t then Nelson will be there….or Minkah.
Bottom line: We will get a great player of need at 7.

  14. Bobby M. Says:

We’ll get a top tier player….no matter how you slice it. Likely we get a shot at Chubb, Nelson, or Barkley…..The nose tackle Vea or the CB from Ohio State are highly rated will definitely be there….we just dont hear about them because this draft is loaded with QB at the top and teams that need QBs all jockeying for a shot at them.

  15. Steven007 Says:

Altered, I like Sam Hubbard a lot too. I think you’d be great value in the second round but I don’t think he last that long. Chubb is the best of what this year has to offer apparently but he doesn’t get me super excited at 7.

  16. tmaxcon Says:

Just a smoke screen and part of glazers plan to excite fans before week 4 NUT PUNCH and week 8 all in draft talk for your 2018 Baserment dwelling buccaneers led by cancer93

  17. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

Mike Florio’s take this morning on Saquon Barkley on PFT Live on NBCSN with Chris Simms…on how Barkley was complete “win-now” for any team…was brilliant, and a good logical rant. You all should find it around 8:16 am.

Go Bucs! Go Barkley! Go Bold! Go Primetime!

  18. thunderchunkyPA Says:

I see a win/win with the Jets trade. Either the Giants take a qb, which could be 4 qb’s in 5 picks, then Barkley, Nelson, or Chubb fall to 7. Or if Mayfield, Rosen or Allen fall to 7, trade back with Arizona, Miami, or Buffalo.

  19. Ishereallyworthit Says:

If he falls to 7 I would take him but he’s not worth moving up for, seems a Little one dimensional. He definitely needs to work on more moves. Going to need a lot more development. If he’s the best player available in the draft it’s not a very good one. I think Barkley should be ranked higher than him. The NFL has a lot better offensive Lineman. The question is can the Buccaneers develop him.

  20. I Bleed Pewter and Red Says:

Bradley Chubb is heavily favored to be best edge rusher but I think Marcus Davenport has better measurable, just a little less experience. If we could trade down with say the Bills @ #12 Davenport will probably be there. Value pick.

  21. John meeks Says:

Alteredego, trumaine Edwards is a heck of an athlete and good football player but we don’t need a linebacker.we have two studs and drafted beckwith last year so Tampa isn’t drafting him!

  22. Tnoles Says:

I’d be happy with any of the three non qb’s. All three are a position of need and I think it comes down to preference. The RB would help the red zone offense and play action. The DE obviously would help the pass rush and the guard would be very intriguing as well so I think it’s preference.

  23. BucEmUp Says:

I have heard this guy is over rated, and the Bucs have been known to interview guys and pass on them. I would take Nelson and build that line. Next year when Mike Smith is gone then build the defense up some more

  24. WhatTheBuc Says:

If Barkley is somehow there at 7 I don’t think we can pass that up… maybe move back in the end of 1st for Davenport?? Just a thought

  25. SCBucsFan Says:

TMax who would you take? Because Lord knows you will complain about who they take, show some guts and make a pick instead of just complaining.

  26. Wausa Says:

    OrlandoJoe:
You must not have watched much of Edmunds at Virginia Tech.
When he put his hand in the ground I do not think there was a better pass rusher in college football last year.

At only age 19 Edmunds was dominating in college and has the frame to get much bigger.

Here are the combine numbers for
    Edmunds:
    6’5″ at 253 pounds he ran a 4.54 forty
    Jadeveon Clowney:
    6’5″ at 266 pounds he ran a 4.53 forty
    Noah Spence:
    6’2″ at 251 pounds he ran a 4.80 forty.

  27. lambchop Says:

I love the fact that Chubb has an attitude about him. We need guys who can be in someone’s grill and talk some trash. Good teams always have a couple players who bring an edge and some intensity. Those are the players that can summon the best out of their teammates. Eating Ws just doesn’t have the same impact.

  28. SCBucsFan Says:

Chubb may not be a dozen sack guy but we could use any help we can get out there

  29. Joeypoppems Says:

Are we really comparing 40 times for edge rushers? Lol

  30. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Tmax would pick Vita & cut GMC

  31. Cgmaster27 Says:

What’s with all of the Edmonds talk going on here? You guys realize hes a linebacker right? You all realize we don’t run a 3-4 right? Edmunds would be a terrible pick at one of the few positions we don’t need.

  32. AlteredEgo Says:

    Tmax… I like your style

  33. Tbbucs3 Says:

The new additions to the Dline start to make sense if this is the guy were after

  34. BucHead101 Says:

    If chubb falls to #7
    1. Chubb(DE)
    2 .Sony (DE
    3.Chad Thomas (DE)
    4.Armani Watts (S)
    5.D.J Reed (CB)
    6.Will Hernandez (OG)
    6.Grant Haley (CB)
    7.Martez Caterina (RB)
And no I’m not a new the newcomer I’d rather just sit back and laugh at most of you. But logically we can’t get all big names in the draft but we can choose those who possibly could help. Go Bucs

  35. tmaxcon Says:

    SCBucsFan

it does not matter who they pick or add if cancer93 is still ruining the locker room with his soft lackadaisical approach. i would take Barkley or nelson or trade back. only chubb and Barkley are stars.

  36. SCBucsFan Says:

TMax I pray your hate leaves your heart. You must be so sad in real life.

  37. Red86 Says:

I don’t get how some wouldn’t take Chubb if he’s there.

Well I heard Case Keenum called our defense to thank them for his new contract. Sam Bradford is wanting in the que.

So what if Chubb’s video didn’t have a lot of great teams in it. He still showed up and showed out. The fact he had highlight as a freshman (#49 jersey) is very impressive.

Meanwhile, most of the other de aren’t as developed as Chubb at this stage. Which mean they would most likely take time to develop into a decent de, if that happens. Yet, right now Chubb is similar to Clowney, while most scouts and draft analysts said it a big gap after Chubb.

If Chubb there or we traded up, then take him. I see what folks are saying bout Nelson he is my next pick if Chubb is gone, but our defense sucked since Gruden left. We won with an amazing defense and average offense. Now we have an above average offense and a NFL bloopers film defense. It’s time to focus on defense for once.

  38. Wausa Says:

    BucHead101:
Most have OG Will Hernandez from UTEP going in the 1st round.

  39. NFLNut Says:

    ****************

    EVERYONE say it with me:

“Saquon, Chubb, Nelson or TRADE DOWN!”

    ****************

  40. tmaxcon Says:

    SCBucsFan

I don’t have HATE I have STANDARDS…. You are the one in need of assistance for accepting failure and puling for career losers blindly. by the way, I guarantee I am one of the happiest people you would ever meet. you really need to get a handle on reality

  41. Batman Wood Says:

I would look at trading back for Edmunds. At his size and age he could easily grow into a DE and potentially be a great edge rusher. He’s 6’5″ and 250 lbs, but he’s not even 20 years old. He’ll be age 20 for the entire 2018 season. Put 20 pounds on him and you have a 6’5″ 270 DE with elite speed for his size. Some people mention Harold Landry as a speed rusher, but Edmunds ran a full second faster in the forty (4.54), is 2 inches taller, has longer arms and is 2 years younger.

  42. Armybucsfan Says:

Honestly if Barkley and Chubb are available i would go Barkley the way. If we do not we will be sorry. It would be like the time we didn’t pick up Calvin Johnson and look at what he became. Barkley is a once a generational type player. Just because we need a DE so badly let’s not make Chubb out to be the next coming of Simeon rice. Could he be, maybe… but when people are comparing Barkley to “Barry Sanders” we would be nuts to pass up on him. The only way I say we pick up Chubb is if we some how get Suh because then and only then would our line be transformed enough to have them pin their ears back and pounce on opposing quarterbacks. But then we still have an enormous hole at RB. I guess it’s pick your poison. Keep our offense one demensiona or leave our CB’s out to dry because out defensive front can’t pressure a quarterback to save their lives.

  43. LakeLand Says:

I watched Bradley Chubb play against Clemson 3 times. And he disappeared in all 3 of those games. I’m not impress with Bradley Chubb. He’s the best DE in a weak draft for DEs. Bradley Chubb was double-team a lot in college and he couldn’t fight through the double-teams. He also had a problem winning one-on-one matchups against good LTs. He especially had a hard time beating Clemson, LT Mitch Hyatt.

  44. LakeLand Says:

But the Bucs would be foolish to pass on Bradley Chubb. They need an Edge Rusher. But they shouldn’t expect for him to come in and put up Joey Bosa numbers either.

  45. MadMax Says:

Chub and Barkley are out of reach unless we trade up….and I just wouldnt do that. So just forget about them. Since we’ve addressed some DT issues in FA, im guessing Vita is out off of our boards now unless he drops a lot. We need edge rush and a RB. I could see us trading down into the teens or 20’s and getting Davenport or Landry (or both by using the trade capital to land them in the 1st). Im sure Davenport will go before Landry though. But imagine if we got both Davenport and Landry and still had our 2nd rounder to land a RB (the other Chubb or Guice). That would be a good draft.

  46. Armybucsfan Says:

I agree Lakeland but what if Barkley and Chubb are available ….who do you go with ?

  47. MadMax Says:

Lakeland, go watch Landry’s game against Clemson….kid was playing hard!

  48. MadMax Says:

    found it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POKCExeQH1I

  49. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    AlteredEgo Says
“Chubb was 7.37 in the 3 cone drill”

The combine has caused many, many teams to pass on players that ended up being elite. On field production is how these players should be judged. Nothing in the combine really matters.

Not even the 40 speeds…because football speed is always much different. Not passing accuracy, because being under nfl defensive pressure changes everything. Same with arm strength. Just about any QB can throw deep at the combine, because he doesn’t have a big NFL DT or DE about to hit him faster than he can throw.

So I never try to judge by the combine, other than to just get a view of the guys. Its the things that are not measured there that really matter.

  50. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I would be extremely happy to get any of these guys:

    DE Bradley Chubb
    DT Vita Vea
    DE Marcus Davenport
    OG Nelson Quenton
    RB Saquon Barkley
    DT Da’Ron Payne
    S Derwin JAmes
    RB Derrius Guice
    DE Harold Landry
    CB Isaiah Oliver
    DE Sam Hubbard
    RT Mike McGlinchey

  51. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If we get Chubb, Bully will have to give up his number…or Anger will.

  52. SOEbuc Says:

Bucs first round DE picks scare me. I do think Brentson Buckner will be a good Dline coach. Quenton Nelson is just the most sure to be a good player. Nelson, Jensen, Marpet could be a nice ass inside oline for a while.

  53. ndog Says:

If we could somehow trade down and end up with Vita Vea and Marcus Davenport now that would be awesome. Then in round two get one of the backs (Sony M., Guice or N. Chubb). Man that would be unreal!!!!

  54. 813bucboi Says:

Nothing in the combine really matters.

    Not even the 40 speeds…

LOL…..that’s loser talk right there!!!!!!…..I hope you tell that to all the VHG haters!!!!!!…..they blasted his measurables even tho the film stood out as the best pure cover cb in the draft…..

if you think nothing in the combine really matters, you must also believe that “W” and “L” don’t matter…..its all about how hard they play….lol…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….NOPASSESIN2018!!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!!!

  55. LakeLand Says:

    Armybucfan,

I would take Bradley Chubb over Saquon Barkley

  56. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

I highly doubt four QBs will get taken in the top 6. A couple of GMs will most likely decide to draft BPA and not reach for one of these QBs. It would be nice if it happened and one of the BPAs fell to us, but I think that is just wishful thinking on Joe’s, and all Bucs fans, part.

  57. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Ndog how the hell are you going to get two 1st rounders in a trade?

  58. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Army, Calvin Johnson was off the board by the time the Bucs picked that year.

  59. Dave Says:

Chubb is an absolute no brainer.
Size, speed, relentless effort and already has moves.
