Bucs Bringing In Chubb
March 31st, 2018Well, we know the Bucs are at least hosting a Chubb for an interview.
But it is not the Chubb most are hoping for, at least not yet.
Per Vaughn McClure of BSPN, the Bucs are bringing into One Buc Palace Nick Chubb, the star running back out of Georgia and cousin of beastly defensive end Bradley Chubb.
Nick Chubb will be one of the 30 players the Bucs are allowed to bring to One Buc Palace for a private workout and/or interviews. The Dixie Chicks and the Stinking Panthers, per McClure, are also bringing Chubb in for private pre-draft interviews.
Now strangely, Justin Lawler, a defensive end out of SMU, the Bucs are bringing in as well, per Eric Edholm of Pro Football Weekly. Something about him must have stuck out with scouts as well as Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht. Per Lance Zierlein of NFL.com, this Lawler might be lucky to be drafted.
Zierlein has Lawler’s ceiling as a seventh-round pick. Why would the Bucs waste a valuable private interview — remember, only 30 are allowed — on a guy who may not be drafted?
Maybe the Bucs are eyeing a couple of offensive tackles in the American Athletic Conference and they are bringing in Lawler, in part, to get intel on these guys? Licht is on record saying information he gets on players from their opponents is often not just accurate, but revealing.

Sony Michele would be my choice of georgia RB’s.
March 31st, 2018 at 6:22 am
Not very realistic unfortunately, but it’s fun to imagine if we could land both Chubb’s, what is a bit more realistic though is Nelson being there and then whomever Jason & Coach like more out of Guice, Sony, or Chubb (provided each are there in the 2nd coins make for a devastating and balanced offense. Yes it’s at the expense of costing us a top notch CB or Safety but I would be ok with that of it means we are almost a score at will team. As we all know one draft is not enough to fix all of our issues. As stated before I think we have a better chance of maxing out the offense in this draft than we do by going all defense. Unless a trade back offer nets us a another pass rushing threat DE, and upper echelon SS & CB. Then were still lacking a real threat at RB. Still don’t know how good Barber can be, but it just doesn’t seem like he could be good enough to open the offense up enough to where we need it. We don’t need a HOF RB, but one that at strikes a little fear into Def coordinators and defenders causing therm to alter their plans and cause hesitation that we can then exploit and take a lot of pressure of J and help stop his turnovers because he won’t need to feel that he is lthe one option and force everything.
March 31st, 2018 at 6:24 am
@Bob, can’t put a finger on it for why, but I kinda like Sony and Chubb more than I do Guice.
March 31st, 2018 at 6:31 am
Apologize for a couple errors on the long message, but I’m working 24 hours on 3 1/2 hours sleep
March 31st, 2018 at 6:42 am
I agree with Rick. For me it’s the medical history of Guice. I prefer Michel. Scarborough will be available late in the draft if we want to add a bruiser.
March 31st, 2018 at 6:48 am
Nick Chubb is a realistic target for a 2nd round RB. Derrius Guice is not.
March 31st, 2018 at 7:08 am
Yah. I like Sony or guice.
Not thrilled about Chubb (injury) but he is more likely to be there in second
March 31st, 2018 at 7:23 am
I also like penny in the 2nd ,
March 31st, 2018 at 7:35 am
Either of this yrs top 4 running backs would serve us well. Teams with good O lines usually develp good backs. I personally like Guice. And would almost definitely pick Sony ahead of Chubb anyday.
March 31st, 2018 at 7:43 am
If Nelson, chubb or barley is there at 7 they have to be the pick if not trade back for a 1 and a 2.
March 31st, 2018 at 7:43 am
Barkley
March 31st, 2018 at 7:45 am
@ joe
Saints and rams also scheduled visits with lawler. I’d say he is worth the visit if the rams with their dline thinks he is worth a visit.
March 31st, 2018 at 7:57 am
Chubb is my preference in round 2…pretty sure Grice will be gone….still I’d take Chubb over Grice
March 31st, 2018 at 7:59 am
If the offense line improves this year Sony would be my favorite rb outside of Barkley. He’s the kind of back our offense needs. Perfect balance of speed, power, and catching ability. We don’t need another straight line bruiser type because we have that in Barber.
March 31st, 2018 at 8:04 am
Per Walterfootball RB Rashaad Penny is coming for a visit too.
March 31st, 2018 at 8:08 am
Guice is the best 3 down back not named Barkley in the draft if the bucs some how get him I’d be the happiest bucs fan in the country not sure he would fall to us. They need to sit bashed breeland then we have plenty of options with the first and 2nd pick remember we don’t have a 3rd because of the JPP trade
March 31st, 2018 at 8:13 am
Nick Chubb and Rashaad Penny are much more likely to be available with our 2nd rd #38 pick than Sony and Guice who will be long gone by then.
My guess is that Michel and Guice will both be off the board by pick #25 if not sooner.
I would be happy with drafting any of those 4. If the Bucs are targeting either of the later – then they are either going to have to trade down from 7 – or trade back up into the late teens or early 20s of the 1st rd.
If its to be one of the former – then Penny probably makes more sense if the Bucs like Peyton Barber as much as they say they do. Nick Chubb’s power running style is much closer to Barber’s way of running than Penny who I see as a faster, more versatile 3 down type of RB than Chubb who is more of a 2 down back like Barber.
March 31st, 2018 at 8:15 am
Sony Michel > Nick Chubb
March 31st, 2018 at 8:16 am
I agree w Teddy, Chubb is a bit too similar to Barber. Sony is the RB I’d target or hope Guice lasts long enough (prob not).
But I would not be in favor of trading back into the 1st to get Guice as other websites have suggested.
Penny intrigues me, he’s a good KR/PR right?
March 31st, 2018 at 8:23 am
Got a feeling Barkley will drop only because the RBS available early 2nd are still excellent and pairing Guice, Michel, Chubb, Penny or Jones with B Chubb or Nelson would be more enticing, and I think 4 QBS will go top 6
March 31st, 2018 at 8:27 am
I agree with Pickgrin, who says his guess is that Michel and Guice will both be off the board by pick #25 if not sooner.
I think Sony Michel is the better back then his partner Chubb
This draft is deep in running backs, so hopefully we will get us one.
I like Guice too, but surely not at pick #7
March 31st, 2018 at 8:34 am
Joe they might use some of these visits to see if they want to bring a player in after the draft, did you ever think of that?
March 31st, 2018 at 8:39 am
Pick grin usually have something good to say I wish he’d comment more. It’s simple process of elimination how many teams in the 1st round need a running back? With that being said whoa have to get a running back in the 2nd round because we don’t have a 3rd round pick lost in JPP trsde
March 31st, 2018 at 9:06 am
Penny fits the bucs well after recouping a mid round pick for cancer93 the face of the basement years
March 31st, 2018 at 9:09 am
Like @AlteredEgo alluded to wisely a couple weeks ago on another thread with “look over there…look over there..”, could very well be another well-laid distraction plan by Jason.
25 days and counting Buc faithful till the SA-QUON Sweepstakes!! Almost all 2018-2020 draft capital intact still.

T Max maxi pad why don’t you go root for Jacksonville or the dolphins?
March 31st, 2018 at 9:19 am
Please stop advocating for the selection of Nelson at 7. While I understand he appears to be a great prospect, at the end of the day he is a Guard. This team needs defense and RBs. Derwin James has to be the pick as he helps you in multiple areas and you then have your safety positions solid for the several years.
March 31st, 2018 at 9:37 am
Jaboo
Disagree… we need a mauling Oline, one that can control the clock and keep the D off the field.. We can find a safety.
March 31st, 2018 at 9:37 am
We are constantly trying to bring ourselves back down to earth re the draft by remembering the picks fails at about a 50% rate depending on round. Obviously first rounders fail less but they are not sure things either.
And so we say if the “professionals” can’t do any better than this what makes us thing blog posters can? LOL
Lawler’s situation is interesting. I do not discount him simply because “talking heads” or “typing parrots” say he’s not even a 7th round pick.
This would be an interesting exercise but I’m just too lazy. Love to see some research with commentary of the day during the draft Brady went in the 6th round. How did the entire league mess up so badly? It would be fun to find some of the “expert” takes explaining why Brady wasn’t a top prospect.
March 31st, 2018 at 9:40 am
With all due respect Jaboo, I think Derwin is a good player but completely disagree that he sures up safety position for “several years”. Nelson would sure up guard position for several years though, get our running game on track and sure up the middle of our O line for a long time with the rest of our young guys up front. The Bucs made several D line moves to sure up their “run defense” in FA. I have a feeling the plan for 2019 is to stop the run on D, and run the ball on O. This takes the ball out of Jameis hands and limits his turnovers and keeps the chains moving. I say draft goes Nelson, Michel, then defense rest of way. Of course Nelson could be gone, and then Bucs have decisions to make, but Nelson would be a beast and give us a hell of an o-line.
March 31st, 2018 at 9:51 am
@ st. Pete
Actually 1st rounders bust 50% of the time. It goes down from there.
@ everyone else
Pay no attention to Tmax. He is a POS who makes jokes about a man’s son taking his life. Ignore this human scum.
March 31st, 2018 at 9:56 am
Lance Zierlein is wrong on this one, along with a few others this year.
The player is 6’4″ and Lance Zierlein says he lacks length? He’s the same height as Chubb!
Then he says the Lawler doesn’t have enough size? The kid weighs 262LBS! Davenport weighs 264 (only 2 lbs heavier).
And finally, he says “Appears to be maxed out physically.”
What man out of college is ever maxed out physically? Especially an athlete? Seriously.
Here’s what I see:
Justin Lawler was a powerlifter in high school, resulting in a little stiffness in his movements.
He also played offense, racking up 44 catches for 719 yards and 11 touchdowns.
As a Sophomore he had 64 tackles, 9 for loss and 5 sacks.
As a Junior he had 65 tackles, 15 for loss and 6 sacks.
As a Senior he had 74 tackles, 15.5 for loss, 9.5 sacks, 2 fumbles and 3 blocked kicks.
That shows improvement from season to season.
He is a weight room junkie who works hard to get into optimal shape.
Good character.
Relentless effort.
Finishes the job once he gets into the pocket.
Lance Zierlein says he lacks play speed, yet he was quick enough to rack up 791 yards on and 11 touchdowns on offense.
March 31st, 2018 at 9:57 am
Well we locked up safety for a couple years selecting Barron, a sure fire prospect.
None of these guys are guaranteed.
March 31st, 2018 at 9:59 am
LOL Hodad, a guy that is on the bubble for being a 7th rounder is not someone you normally bring in. UDAs you can just bring in after the draft and if you don’t get him no big deal. If that was sarcasm sorry I didn’t catch it. If not I am kind of amazed.
March 31st, 2018 at 9:59 am
I was speaking of the DE.
March 31st, 2018 at 10:02 am
TouchDownTampaBay Says
“UDAs you can just bring in after the draft and if you don’t get him no big deal.”
I think you guys are forgetting one aspect.
Teams have to convince UDAs to sign if they go undrafted. By bringing them in, they get to woo them with the facilities and such before the draft. Talk them up.
It happens every year.
“Why would the Bucs waste a valuable private interview — remember, only 30 are allowed — on a guy who may not be drafted?”
That’s why.
March 31st, 2018 at 10:04 am
Jaboo having a guard that can play 12 to 14 years at left guard to protect our crab leg loving girl fondling franchise QB is more of a sure thing then derwin or minkah
March 31st, 2018 at 10:08 am
Licht might have a double Chubb on his hands
March 31st, 2018 at 10:16 am
It
Won’t happen but I wish we could get Sony in the 2nd then Bo in the 5th
Running back problem solved
March 31st, 2018 at 10:28 am
Um, yeah! That’s why Joe wrote in the post it seems very odd to waste one of the 30 visits on a guy who may not get drafted.
Would hope Bucs have much higher targets to shoot at.
March 31st, 2018 at 10:34 am
I think I would have a Chubb if we got both chubs
March 31st, 2018 at 10:36 am
“Why would the Bucs waste a valuable private interview — remember, only 30 are allowed — on a guy who may not be drafted?”
It’s a good question, but while we are speculating, it seems that this is classic Bucs draft strategy: draft for need in the first and second round and then give up and select players for special teams during the remaining rounds. If any starters emerge from those picks, then great; if not… I hope that this is not the case. We might disagree about the most pressing need, but we all agree that the team has multiple needs at various positions. The Bucs are not 1-2 players away from being a playoff team.
March 31st, 2018 at 10:40 am
Most Ga. fans that I know like Chubb more than Michelle. Chubb is slightly faster too.
March 31st, 2018 at 10:41 am
@ tampabaybuc and joe
The bucs brought in lagerrate blount who went undrafted. Who did he sign with? The bucs. It happens all the time. Stop over thinking it.
Overthinking it? Then why didn’t they do it last year if it’s so easy? … And Blount would have fit this year, too. –Joe

@LUV, MadMax- Lawler looks slow to me. That and I didn’t really see him make many splash plays. I like that he doesn’t give up on plays though. Good motor.
Capt. Tim- I could not understand why so many fans were clamoring to re-sign Gholston. He should’ve had more sacks by accident! It’s almost like he went “Ghost” on us, other than celebrating tackles 3 yards downfield of course!!!
March 31st, 2018 at 10:53 am
Justin Lawler & Joe Ostman are to of the more intriguing developmental prospects in this draft. Both probably won’t get drafted, but you would love to have – one them pushing for a roster spot off the practice squad.
Sound like, Jason’s probably getting a early push on his UDFA list.
March 31st, 2018 at 10:56 am
are *two of the more intriguing
March 31st, 2018 at 11:06 am
Blount would have fit Joe? Really? Who wouldn’t have fit with this backfield? Only Doug Martin.
March 31st, 2018 at 11:45 am
@ joe
Blount was not undrafted free agent this off season. Not sure what a veteran has to do with an udfa. Many teams bring in players that may go undrafted before the draft. Again this is nothing new. It happens all the time. Stop overthinking it. Remember the cool story of blount on his pre draft visit walking around shaking all of the cooks hands in his suit. He made an impression on the bucs hence why he was on our open day roster as a ROOKIE udfa.
March 31st, 2018 at 11:53 am
And i didn’t know this had to be said but when teams schedule their 30 visits, the 30 they schedule are not only players who could go in the first 3 rounds of the draft. Its players who are scheduled to go all over the draft. So if you brought someone in who you had a sixth round grade on and you didnt have a 7th round pick and they go undrafted, then you have intel on a player you might want to bring in as a udfa. Its really not that hard to grasp. Great teams are prepared for the whole draft and not just the first 4 rounds.
March 31st, 2018 at 11:54 am
How that meaningless win looking to you draft capitol boys. 5th looking better then 7th now gj Jameis, Goodwin for that great play in a lost season.
March 31st, 2018 at 12:19 pm
In regard to drafting Barkley, it depends on how wide you think the talent gap is between him and the next tier of 5 or 6 RBs that will probably be gone by the end of round 2. I don’t think it’s as wide as some say it is. Our first pick effects our second pick. It all comes down to: would you rather have Barkley and a 2nd round CB/S/OL/G/DE? Or would you rather have one of the “top guys” at those positions and a 2nd round RB? I like the second option because I think the talent drop off at those positions is greater, except maybe at G, than it is for the RBs. It’s hard enough for a 1st round CB, S or DE to make it in the league, let alone a 2nd rounder, while 2nd round RBs have had plenty of success in the league. Just my opinion. If we do draft Barkley I won’t be upset, but then I really need to hope our 2nd round pick ends up being a stud and not a dud. I personally hope we find a way to get Penny later in the 2nd after a trade down or up. I don’t think he’ll make it to the 3rd, but I think he’ll be a later 2nd.
March 31st, 2018 at 12:44 pm
Agree Eric. If the Bucs are targeting Penny which I think might be the case – then its an opportunity to trade down in rd 2 and re-coup the 3rd rd pick traded for JPP.
Going from #38 down to 50 for instance is a 120 value point differential – the equivalent of a late 3rd rd pick.
Its risky business though – assuming you know where a player is likely to go – and then trading down 12 spots when you have the need the Bucs do to get a good RB in the draft – and there’s a talent drop off after Penny is gone.
March 31st, 2018 at 12:57 pm
********************
I’ve said Chubb will likely be our pick if we spend a 2nd round pick on a RB.
If we get Saquon at #7, great … if we trade down with the Bills and get #12 and #22, we’d likely use #22 on Derrius Guice … great.
HOWEVER, if we stand pat and decide to use a 2nd rounder on a RB, I believe Nick Chubb will be our pick, as I believe Guice will be gone in the 1st round and that Michel and Jones will also be gone by the time our 2nd round pick rolls around … and that would be fine by me as Chubb is a fantastic talent.
***************
March 31st, 2018 at 12:59 pm
As for Justin Lawler … he’s basically a 4-3 DE version of Riley Bullough … all heart, great special teamer, and a guy who “might” be able to fill in for the defense in a pinch …
March 31st, 2018 at 1:01 pm
I would go with Sony Michele or Guice before Chubb. Every since the knee injury with Chubb he has not been as explosive as he was. If he didn’t have that I would say take him, but I would go with one of the others.
March 31st, 2018 at 1:07 pm
I just hope we draft him or his cousin so that Joe can write an article called “Bucs get a Chubb” 😝
March 31st, 2018 at 1:21 pm
What I see.
1st rd One of the elite(DE,G,S) or they will will try to trade down.
2nd rd RB
4th rd DT
5th rd G
6th rd CB
6th rd CB
7th rd WR(speedster)
March 31st, 2018 at 1:27 pm
Pickgrin, I agree. If we want a RB that has a chance to be great we have to do it somewhere in round 2. I wouldn’t be mad if we traded back in the 1st to 12 and grab Vea. You can’t have enough DLman and we could get back a 3rd that wouldn’t be too low, maybe more since I can’t remember the trade points. I’d just rather pass on Barkley since the other positions won’t be as strong, except maybe at G, in round 2. I hope Licht doesn’t try to get too cute and trade back too far in any round to get the guys he wants.
March 31st, 2018 at 1:33 pm
As for Lawler and Ostman, I haven’t seen much of them except for YouTube highlights, but they are sized more for 3-4 OLBs than 4-3 DEs. I liked what I saw out of Ostman more, but I don’t think he would be more than a 3rd down rusher for us. I used to hate the 3-4 Defense, but now I wish we ran it because there seems to be way more guys for a 3-4 than a 4-3. If only we could land Wade Phillips next season! Lol
March 31st, 2018 at 2:21 pm
I would have a Chubb if we got both chubbs
March 31st, 2018 at 3:06 pm
When it comes to running backs out of UGA, I prefer Nick Chubb. The main reason being that despite his injury history, he’s still more athletically gifted than Michel, that and Sony is 2 years older than Chubb.
March 31st, 2018 at 3:38 pm
Nick Chubb is more of a homerun hitter than Sony Michele and with finishing speed.
And more of a power back than Sony…
I agree with blakeçs comment above
March 31st, 2018 at 3:38 pm
Typo… blake’s
March 31st, 2018 at 5:49 pm
Blake/Erik, I’ll take your word for it, but I’m not keen on the name Chubb. That’s my hot take! Lol
March 31st, 2018 at 10:26 pm
Penny in Pewter baby!!!!! Go Bucs!!!
April 1st, 2018 at 12:46 am
If we trade down to 12 I hope either Ward is there or we take Marcus Davenport.
April 1st, 2018 at 6:30 am
This is the rb I want we haven’t had a do it all tank like him since Alstott or actually Blount Chubb is a beast rb….. we need him
April 1st, 2018 at 11:46 am
BUCJOE,’
There is NO WAY Denzel Ward would be available at #12 … he could go at #4, #5, #6 and DEFINITELY by #8 imho.
However, I do think Derwin James will still be available at #12.
