It’s $7 Million, Plus Incentives, For Brent Grimes

March 21st, 2018

A little clarification here on the cash heading to the bank account of the only Buccaneers cornerback that strikes fear into NFL receivers.

Initially, the new 2018 contract for almost 35-year-old Brent Grimes was reported as a $10 million, one-year deal.

Reliable OverTheCap.com has clarified that as a fully guaranteed $7 million contract for this season plus $3 million in potential performance incentives.

Joe’s glad to see incentives in the contract and, frankly, it sure feels like the Bucs got a steal of a deal. There’s no doubt Grimes had options on the market but it seems his professed love of this Buccaneers team is real.

Joe suspects Dirk Koetter and Mike Smith, known in Tampa for training camps on the soft side, will be taking it very easy on their veteran ballhawk through the summer. And Grimes surely knows and appreciate that.

And that’s the way it should be.

Let freak-of-nature athlete Grimes dictate the shots on his body and let the youngsters (too many of them) like Ryan Smith and Vernon Hargreaves toughen themselves up through training camp and preseason.

great deal for team… if only our cryin clown of a DT cancer93 had Miko’s passion.

  2. AlteredEgo Says:

In a perfect world it would be great to see CB Ward work with Grimes for a year…

  3. Buc believer Says:

The difference between Grimes and McCoy is that Grimes wants to EARN his paycheck, Grimes will give you his heart and his soul and do the little things on and off the field to make himself better. Mr. Softie aka Mcjoke wants everyone to love him give him accolades and tell him how wonderful he is and what a great player he is all the while sitting back at his locker at one Buc reading his comic books in his little footie pajamas eating his tutie frutie ice cream with rainbow sprinkles and dreaming of the day he can carry Grimes jock strap

In a perfect world the glazers would admit they have no clue how to run a nfl franchise and sell….

  5. El_Buc941 Says:

What Gerald McCoy needs is some one like Suh!those 2 are Jekyll and Hyde.they would flush out the QB in a split second.or maybe 1.5s to be exact.lol.if Tampa were to sign Suh they would immediately be contenders to win the NFC South.GUARANTEED!!!

  6. tmaxcon Says:

    El_Buc941

no team with cancer93 on the roster will ever win a meaningful game much less a championship.

  7. SOEbuc Says:

This makes me a little happier about the resigning. Not much.

  8. AlteredEgo Says:

Yep…I’ve always had the G’Boyz back….but it is time for them to move on in life and sell the team…can’t see that happening though…the $145,000,000 investment keeps gushing money into the family trust

  9. JimmyJack Says:

Very shocked we haven’t adressed this position group yet. It’s getting scary to think about.

If they don’t bring in a CB they are lording themselves to take one with a high pick aren’t they? Not so sure that is a corner you want to be backed into(no pun into).

  10. SCBucsFan Says:

JJ I agree; its a good bet Grimes doesn’t play all 16 and we don’t have the depth to tolerate that. I’m guessing the Bucs are still waiting for prices to drop on Breeland or Grimes; Grimes left AZ without a deal so maybe he’s asking too much.

  11. pick6 Says:

i wish him the best, but even the charmin-soft training camp this summer couldn’t prevent a gash on his leg and him (according to Miko) playing hurt almost all year. the cut was a freak accident, but let’s hope the mystery injury from last year isn’t a prelude to him becoming a latter day Vincent Jackson

  12. Joel Says:

Joe would’ve traded Ronde Barber after his second season. Give Hargreaves another year. People are so impatient.

  13. LakeLand Says:

    Rashaan Melvin got $6.5 million.

  14. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Bring in EJ Gaines and Eric Reid and we won’t have to address the secondary until the 4th round.

  15. Allen Denton Says:

Everyone of you hating on GMC need to be praised on 620 WDAE’s segment SHUT UP, hosted by Ronnie and TKras. It really pisses me off to see a guy like Gerald (a sportsmen, family man, and great football player) get ripped by you idiot fans. Y’all need a better hobby than rippin on our core players. Not his fault we’ve been terrible.

  16. GhostofSchiano Says:

And the other starting corner back??????????????

  17. JAB83 Says:

I remember when people use to talk spit about #99 Sapp.

TMax is a pansy #93 McCoy Troll compared to #99s Troll.

In fact they even coined a neat nickname for sissy trolls like

    @TMax

    #SnowFlake

  18. Mike Griczika Says:

    Joe,

Big fan of the website from Massachusetts. What are your thoughts on Josh Jackson in a trade down scenario? I like that he’s 6’1, a proven playmaker, and relatively new to the position.

    Thanks,
    Griz

  19. JAB83 Says:

Give me another highly drafted corner to stick behind Grimes and next to Vernon, Justin and Ryan!!!

Solid yound group… Ala our LBs and soon to be DLine…

Through in a hybrid safty corner and an LG to take over for Sweezy NEXT YEAR…

    WE ARE CLOSE FOLKS….

And yes Indidnt mention RB because Barber is more than capable in THIS offence!!!

Our DLine will develop better if we take the pressure off them!!!

Nelson #1 or best available DB if he is gone.

NO TO RUNNING BACK at #1

AND HELL NO TO A DEFENSIVE END at #1

  20. JimmyJack Says:

Ghost I think Licht is on his knees right now begging the Glazers for some cash to buy a CB with.

Though, many fans think he has enough Cash in his suitcase to sign Suh. Maybe he should use that money to buy us 2 CBS a SS and a RB?

  21. SOEbuc Says:

Need to resign McClain for depth. If they don’t add Gaines or Breeland than they need to trade down into the 15-20 range, get Davenport and a CB with a second round pick. Or maybe their plan is to get Minkah Fitzpatrick at #7. Really wouldn’t mind that seeing as how we could try him at SS or CB. Fill whichever huge hole with what he is better at, and I really think he’s gonna be great in the NFL. Then DE in second round.

  22. 813bucboi Says:

another soft TC…..what else is new…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….NOPASSESIN2018!!!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!!!

  23. Half_sac Says:

Y’all funny, really showing you don’t know what you’re talking about in the comments McCoy is top tier so shut up and actually learn something and stop talking out of your asses. Shouldnt expect no less though its been like this for the past 6 years in the comments.

  24. SCBucsFan Says:

SOE if they trade down to 15 they ain’t getting Fitzpatrick

  25. SCBucsFan Says:

oops, sorry I misread yours and there is no edit

  26. Lamarcus Says:

Hope it’s a incentive that he won’t be getting his ankle broke or Crossed over. Don’t start slipping and sliding everywhere and when u make a play…don’t get burnt on the very next play!!

  27. Pickgrin Says:

A fair contract for both sides. Thanks for not sticking us up for more Miko – er Brent.

Hopefully Grimes will stay healthy the whole season and get at least one more ticket to the Big Dance in 2018 – earning his full bonus and a shot at a SB ring to end his career. Wouldn’t that be something?

  28. D-Rome Says:

great deal for team… if only our cryin clown of a DT cancer93 had Miko’s passion.

You know, I have to admit it tmaxcon. At first (and I’m talking years ago) I couldn’t stand your posts. Then I got to the point where I ignored them. Now, I find them absolutely hysterical. It’s almost masterful how you can take *any* Bucs story on any subject and weave in your disdain for GMC.

  29. AlteredEgo Says:

    ^^^ 🙂

  30. Lord Cornelius Says:

I wish we’d just sign EJ Gaines already. I have a feeling the Bucs are waiting to see how the draft plays out but that’s annoying. Sign EJ gaines and you can still draft a CB high if you want.

Would be sweet to trade back and get another 2 and another 4.

Come out of the top 4 rounds with
    2 DE
    1 CB
    1 DT
    1 S
    1 OG

With at least 1 DE in top 2 rounds. And OG that can play LG.

    Go OT round 5. Go RB/KR R6.

  31. Lord Cornelius Says:

Oops meant 1 RB instead of 1 S in that top 4 round projection

  32. tmaxcon Says:

    D-Rome

cancer93 is the main reason my favorite franchise can not depart the basement… until he is gone there is no hope nor is there any solution to the problem. get rid of the bum or stay in the basement

  33. Joe Says:

    Mike:

Big fan of the website from Massachusetts. What are your thoughts on Josh Jackson in a trade down scenario?

First, thanks for the compliment! Honestly, don’t want the Bucs drafting any corner with this current defensive staff. They have shown zero evidence they can develop a corner. Until Ryan Smith or Vernon Hargreaves show they can be reliable starters, or until Bucs decide to get a different defensive coordinator or new secondary coach (or both), no way should the Bucs throw away a draft pick on a corner.

  34. SteveK Says:

If the big three are gone, draft Marcus Davenport.

  35. AlteredEgo Says:

    big3 gone…LB Edmunds…CB Ward…Fritz or James

  36. Rod Munch Says:

That is quite the deal, and we know how much Licht LOVES getting a deal.

Oh and Sherman, he got $3m. I remember the night he signed everyone saying John Lynch got tooled and how happy they were he didn’t sign here. Oh wait, Lynch gave him $3m, that’s all that is at risk, which is less than we gave a kicker and the 4th DE from the Bears. Meanwhile the Bucs have Ryan Smith as their #2 starter.

  37. Reach87 Says:

Troll bait much mire subtle, yet cery effective nonetheless. Key words Grimes, cornerback, free agent, incentives. And yet…

  38. Rod Munch Says:

Denzel Ward to me seems to be the guy. He’s got an awesome name for a corner, but more importantly he has a special attribute which you need to be justified to be a DB and drafted in the top 10, and that is he has elite speed. People talk about his size but he’s a solid 5′ 10″ and had the third best vert at the combine, along with the top broadjump. I don’t watch much college football so I tend to go by how players compare to past players in terms of stats and what the hype is from the experts, like what do they do well and what do they do poorly, and Ward seems like a guy that will be very very good and should step in day 1 and start. For what the Bucs need right now he’d be my pick and I think I’d be very happy with it.

BUT… if I was picking without regard to need or needing someone to start right now I’d go with Davenport. He has elite physical tools and very good production, although at a lower level. He reminds me a lot of JPP, but you might not get production from him for a couple of years.

So I think it comes down would you rather have a guy on an entry contract that gives you 3 good years at DE or a solid corner for 5 years? It’s a real question and one open to debate. I think the need is so desperate at corner the Bucs would have to go with Ward, which isn’t a bad thing.

This buds for you, for all you do.

  40. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Buc believer Says
“The difference between Grimes and McCoy is that Grimes wants to EARN his paycheck”

Oh shut the heck up. McCoy earns his money every season. He goes out there and plays better than any other DL guy, and he plays whether he is injured or not. Stop blaming him when there has been no one else on the line to support him.

  41. tmaxcon Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai

dude you are getting more and more delusional cancer playing hard… that is like saying tonya harding is a victim. cancer93 is a loafer who is huffing and puffing by halftime…

keep up with the McCoy excuses the results prove he is just another failure.

  42. BucEmUp Says:

Glad Grimes is back, dude can ball but the excitement stops there. The entire defense is worthless right now with the current DC. The corners and safeties will always be a position of need, the coaching makes the players look bad, the fans blame the players, gm cuts them and tries new ones. Happens year, after year after year. Many players leave and become big contributors on their new squads.

  43. SteveK Says:

    NFLNut

Check this article from Stephen White. Love this dide’s insight. He and Ian Beckles are fantastic at what they do.

After reading this, I’d be all for drafting Davenport if the big three are gone.

  46. BuccaneEric75 Says:

A question to the Joes or anyone here who might know. How do incentives in a contract affect the cap? For example: if we were paying exactly what the cap is this season for all 53 guys and Grimes hits his incentives, wouldn’t that put us 3 million over the cap, or are incentives counted as a cap hit? Seems to me teams would want a lot of players with incentive filled contracts to “circumvent” the cap. I’ve never heard of that happening or even looked into it, so I’m not sure. Just wondering how this works since teams can’t go over the cap.

  47. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Never mind. I found the answer:

    Cash Incentives

In a way, incentives act like signing bonuses, but they are broken off into two categories, likely to be earned (LBTE) or not likely to be earned (NLBTE).

LBTE incentives are normally performance-based goals that are listed in a contract that a player was able to complete in his previous season. For example, if there is an incentive for Adrian Peterson to rush for 1,000 yards in 2013, this would qualify as LBTE and is included in the team salary since Peterson ran for well over 1,000 yards in 2012.

Other things that are included as LBTE are incentives that require a player to report to offseason workouts, minicamps and things of that nature.

If a player has an incentive that is performance-based that he did not complete in the previous year, this is considered NLBTE and therefore not counted against the cap.

Things can get complicated with this as well, particularly for players who did not play in the previous season like rookies or injured players. For disputes, there will often be arbitrators to listen to both sides and come to an agreement.

  48. NFLNut Says:

Cool … now let’s add either EJ Gaines or Brashaud Breeland AND either Tre Boston, Kenny Vaccaro or Eric Reid, so we don’t have to “reach” on “need” positions.

  49. BuccaneEric75 Says:

SteveK, if we end up getting Davenport, I hope Steve White is right. Trade down, though.

  50. Buc believer Says:

@buccaneerbonzai….. Tmaxcon says gmc playing hard is like tonya Harding she was a victim. LOL so true!!! Or like bill Clinton saying all those women sexually harassed him and not the other way around!

  51. NFLNut Says:

^ Or like HRC pretending she didn’t know her cronies were participating in human trafficking of Haitian children and destroying that entire country financially …. the truth is stranger than fiction.

  52. tmaxcon Says:

i think it is fairly safe to say that Jeffrey Dahmer was more compassionate than HRC.

despite his indiscretions dahmer was definitely a better human being than a Clinton.

  53. Buc believer Says:

    ^ So True!!

  54. Steve Says:

So much McCoy hate. You guys need to get over it. He’s an elite player. Maybe u don’t like comics maybe u don’t like super man, but get over it. U guys are lame. He’s productive, plays through injuries, is a solid human being and comes with zero off field baggage. Stop smoking drugs and realize the truth.

  55. Steve Says:

    Go bucs

  56. tmaxcon Says:

    Steve

Results prove other wise… cancer93 us good player hardly elite, a horrible leader and 100% locker room cancer…. career loser results all that matter. Feel goid bs and smiles are meaningless

  57. Eric Says:

    “Charmin soft training camp”

    That’s hilarious.

  58. Eric Says:

Tax has almost got me convinced that McCoy sucks.

Damn good branding job. I can’t think of McCoy without thinking cancer.

  59. Duke Says:

    Tmax,

If GMC had been drafted by a team that had veteran’s as locker room leaders or
If GMC had been drafted earlier by the Bucs when Hardy Nickerson was the guy,
McCoy would never have been put onto a leadership pedestal.

I believe it’s impossible to dismiss His lack of leadership while simultaneously He is the team leader, spokesman etc etc. His recent statement ‘re taking over the lockeroom was an indictment against Him and his role in the team. It was shocking to hear his own admission and far more so to think that the team lacks leadership or that the guys brought in has accepted such utterly horrific, fundamentally incompetent , rudderless with a GPS navigation system , soft as baby poop , leadership. If Kwon is such a bad ass then why has he tucked his tail around mc.

I don’t believe that the new f.a. veteran’s are going to be submissive and go all beta boy in the lockeroom.

Leadership aside, straight play…….GMC is elite. Point blank period……4 Times all pro, 6 times pro bowler means that you are elite. That’s not the resume of a good player. If you can’t adjust to the facts that are conclusive evidence for his game being better than good then you’re acknowledging how much more feelings and emotions mean than stone cold lead pipe facts that your own manliness is questionable.
