Keep Fitz
February 15th, 2018Yes, Bucs fans, the Mike Glennon Mob is alive and well.
They’ve fired up again with the approach of free agency and especially after Jeff Dickerson of BSPN reported it is just a formality that former Bucs starter and backup quarterback Glennon will be released by the Bears soon.
Last offseason, Glennon, smartly, took an offer from Chicago before general manager Ryan Pace could sober up and raked in $16 million. Glennon was horrific with the Bears and was benched after four starts for rookie Mitchell Trubisky. If the Bears decide to keep Glennon, he’s due to deposit another $2.5 million in March and his salary is for the 2018 season is $12.5 million.
With the possible exception of Nick Foles, no backup is worth that kind of scratch and props to Glennon for pouncing on such a silly contract last spring.
This news that Glennon is virtually assured to be a free agent has some Bucs fans worked up about a Glennon return. Joe won’t go there now. Joe is of the mind Ryan Fitzpatrick is a better backup.
Joe has seen faster and more mobile fire hydrants than Glennon. The only mobility Glennon seems to have is to take a step or two from getting clobbered by three defensive linemen. Fitz? Dude is a weapon with his legs, seriously.
And Fitz played well in his backup role to America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. In this three starts, Fitz was 2-1 and damn, he had wheels when he needed to run.
Nothing against Glennon here. Joe likes him. But as a backup, Fitz showed Joe more than Glennon ever has0
. The choice between two free agent backups, Fitz or Glennon? Joe’s going with Fitz.

Neither one is worth the money!

” Fitz showed Joe more than Glennon ever has”
Agreed Joe.
So the question then becomes – How much will it take to keep Fitz? He’s not signing another $3M 1 year deal. That I can pretty much assure you of…

I think the Bucs should just draft a guy in the later rounds to bring in as a back up like a Luke Falk, Mike White, or Riley Ferguson
February 15th, 2018 at 7:08 am
If we paid McClown 5 million I have no problem paying Fitz 6 million.
February 15th, 2018 at 7:08 am
With Jameis facing a potential suspension, Fitz has so much leverage in negotiations. And it might be worth it to overpay him this year because of the looming investigation.

Backups are irrelevant when ownerships only goal is to finish in the nfc south basement every year. Only contenders require depth not basement dwellers with no hope.
Only low standard bucfan would want a heartless proven failure like 8 back on rooster god forbid bucs try to upgrade wehen its so easy to turn back to losers.

Good to see joe change his tune about backup QB’s and their importance!!!!! After watching that even Fitz teach JW3 a thing or two was good for joe!!!!!!
@bighoghaynes
I know you are skating on thin ice!!!! Those veiled statements should be corrected if you wanna stay around here!!!!! Maybe you should say it more like this ” Neither one of those Gentleman is worth the money! ” Just so it appears crystal clear!!!!!!!!!!
GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A fire plug?? I definitely would go with Fitz. When he filled in for Jameis last year I think he did a good job and earned his pay. That being said I like the Idea of a late round pick. There is a 6-7 round pick that would serve as a very athletic back-up who could double as a Wildcat weapon, running back, and WR if necessary. He was one of the top producers in the NCAA over the last 4 years and yet I hear nothing about his status. JT Barrett, The Ohio State University, and holder of a multitude of records for one of the perennial top teams in the country.

The answer to this really relies on the thing we fans don’t see.—primarily, what their relationship is off the field and who’s better in the QB room. Whoever provides more insight breaking down tape is going to have the best chance at holding down the job.

@Joe … “Joe is of the mind Ryan Fitzpatrick is a better backup.”
YES … YES … YES … YES … YES
February 15th, 2018 at 8:19 am
Fitz is a better back up. Keep Fitz. We put up 30 points 3 times all year and 2 of those times were Fitz. Qb, LB and WR are the only groups we have that should stay the same for 2018

Pickgrin Says:
“How much will it take to keep Fitz? He’s not signing another $3M 1 year deal. That I can pretty much assure you of…”
I might agree with keeping Fitz another year, but he was not so great that he should get much of a pay raise. Maybe another million.
A definitely do not want Glennon back. If we keep a 3rd QB, I say go rookie and hope he turns into something. The idea of a backup QB is stability in the event he has to start. Another goal should be having a backup (2nd or 3rd string) who can gain trade value. Glennon won’t do that.
He made his money. We finally got rid of him. Keep him out.
(although I doubt the Bucs will agree)

I’m perfectly fine with keeping Ryan Griffin too, instead of resigning Fitz.
February 15th, 2018 at 8:56 am
Why does anybody care how much money he makes?
Newsflash geeks we can afford him. Not like anybody is pushing for a long term guaranteed deal. We need a good backup. Why exactly would anybody here be upset if he makes too much money(in your opinion)?
If the team makes a financial decision that’s one thing but it’s beyond senseless for a fan to give a rats ass if he makes 3 or 4 mil…….Wait why stop there? Should we care if he makes 3.7? What about 3.48? Is 3.115 too high? Ridicilous
February 15th, 2018 at 9:00 am
Easy to say your fine with Ryan Griffin now Bonzai. But there’s not much to go on to say that, we’ll actually there is nothing to go on.
February 15th, 2018 at 9:08 am
Martinii.
Didn’t the Bucs try that last year with Blake Sims, the converted Alabama Qb to Rb? I’m not saying they are exactly the same player but pretty close. I could only see it if they’re going to keep 3 Qbs and R. Griffin continues to look as good as he did in the later preseason games before his injury.
February 15th, 2018 at 9:43 am
We should pay attention to this…..JW has a potential suspension, and it can be long……….. we need a solid backup, and I am not sure Glennon or Fitz are the right answer…..
February 15th, 2018 at 10:32 am
HECK YES KEEP FITZ!!!!
Give him a raise and an extension too. He is the perfect backup QB.
February 15th, 2018 at 10:56 am
Keep Fitz, He’s one of the best backups in the league. Ryan Griffen is a quality 3rd string quarterback. No more no less.
February 15th, 2018 at 12:00 pm
The Bucs better keep Fitz; there is a 6 game suspension looming for Jameis, whether he did anything wrong or not. All it takes is an allegation.
February 15th, 2018 at 12:19 pm
I’m always weary of outside FA’s. They could be a pig in the poke like Swaggy.
I’d rather sign OUR FA’s like Grimes. We know EXACTLY what we have in Fitz.
Why upset the apple cart? It also appears that Fitz and #3 have a terrific relationship.
Fitz also elevates our locker room IQ. He and Brate are both Harvard grads. What other NFL teams have ever had two Harvard guys on the same team. LOL
Actually while many here like the Cro Magnons to play on their team I was raised idolizing Paul Brown….first with the Browns and then when he brought the Bengals to my former hometown.
Brown was incredibly creative and was the first to acknowledge that brains are actually an advantage for football players. He was the first to check out draft picks IQ scores.
February 15th, 2018 at 4:02 pm
Yup, Keep Fitz. Only reason we are even discussing this is because it’s offseason and news is super slow.
February 15th, 2018 at 4:20 pm
Glennon was awful at NC State. I screamed out the window like the madman from the movie Network when Dumimbecilek drafted him in the 3rd round. Typical Dumnik. All he’s done is continued to suck. Joes have hit it right in their blurb.
February 15th, 2018 at 4:32 pm
Pay and keep Fitz!
February 15th, 2018 at 6:13 pm
@ The Buc Realist: Veiled statements? There was nothing veil or wrong with my statements, they were my truth…as far as corrections are concerned, I’m flexible, this is not my site, I’ve read a lot more “veil” language used on this site than what I used, Joe works hard for his money and I will play by his rules and I won’t complain to him about what some other poster puts on his site!!!….CONTINUE TO BUILD A WALL … I’ll change the tenor but not the tone!!
